- cogentspirit, on 09/06/2008, -14/+135Dan Rather left in a way no journalist should ever have to go out. But I am damn glad he is speaking out on a issue. News has become an absolute farce..There is no arguing with that.
The Peggy Noonan mic slip proves that.

The John Stewart vs Crossfire incident proves that.

The fact that every Bush state of the union address has been so highly praised in the media since 9/11 proves that.
The fact that Obama's speech was poorly rated in the media while Palins was "a home run,"
proves that.
The fact that the Daily Show and the Colbert Report have both won Peabody awards while the most highly watched news source can win 0 in a year proves that. http://www.peachpundit.com/2008/04/02/fox-news-win ...
This is an issue that needs to be discussed. News and the press need to change. - ccb621, on 09/06/2008, -1/+86"I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

I agree with Ccb621. It felt like I was watching a scene out of Network, I got chills watching this video. Kudos to Dan !

The house of cards is falling... - physivic, on 09/06/2008, -2/+23Edward S. Herman, Noam Chomsky and many others have been explaining the corporate reporting situation for decades It's a shame it took this long to finally reach easy public access and near-mainstream knowledge, but at least it's not relegated to books you can't even find in neighborhood bookstores, B&N, Borders &c. "Herman and Chomsky argue that since mainstream media outlets are either large corporations or part of conglomerates (e.g. Westinghouse or General Electric), the information presented to the public will be biased with respect to these interests."

- snassiri, on 09/06/2008, -3/+17he's a reporter. not a journalist. He took the fall, cause like he said, there is no one who will step up and say "the buck stops here" anymore
- pintomp3, on 09/06/2008, -1/+14when you turn information into a business, it becomes infotainment. media companies don't sell advertising space, they sell viewers to advertisers. in order to attract the most viewers, you got for what sells: sex, emotion, conflict. actual news and information doesn't sell, but is crucial to a functioning democracy. media companies are beholden to their shareholders, not the public interest.
- Synn, on 09/06/2008, -2/+14No it isn't.

- JustinHopewell, on 09/06/2008, -3/+13Thanks for the Jon Stewart clip. That was fantastic!
- physivic, on 09/06/2008, -3/+12ah, you miss the point. the man has been reporting for 40 years & got smashed for a little overreach in an enormous story of import. his attackers want everyone else to miss the point too, but only barely enough to re-elect the Monkey In Chief fell for it. ... you included, apparently.

- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -3/+10And what never made the news was that Ron Paul came in above the other "top-tier" in 5 out of the first 7 primary states. Thank God people are starting to wake up.
- dhughes, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7 If you've ever seen "Sorry this media cannot be played in your territory" or something similar to that message you've seen the business side of a "news" corporation.
- Infidelcastr0, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7An now you can see why corporate control is not always ideal, News used to be regulated and wasn't so profitable, it was a service provided for letting the networks use the airwaves. Then the Republicans came along and said "let the free market sort it out" and turned the FCC into a giant rubber stamp. The rest, as they say, is history.
- bicyclethief, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7What I don't understand is there's a market for REAL news.
Somebody could make real money reporting REAL news, all the time, instead of just some of the time and half-assed. I know I would pay for it. - evodevo1, on 09/06/2008, -5/+11I agree with Dan Rather that news is driven by corporate profits and has become a farce. However, if giving us crap is making the media companies money whereas having insightful analysis on substantive news is not, is this the companies fault? I am sure they bear part of the blame, but it seems to me the root of the problem is that the desire of the public is in the wrong place. If a significant portion of the public actually wants real news, maybe the companies would actually cover them.
- disraeligears54, on 09/06/2008, -3/+9Dan's the man!
- aclements, on 09/06/2008, -3/+9Or we could link to the original, posted by those that made it, not a repost by someone looking for hits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o25T0BspJ7c
- richmomz, on 09/06/2008, -3/+9Bravo Dan, finally someone with authority telling it like it is. What was most interesting was when he pointed out that collusion between the government and the media goes at least as far back as the Nixon administration, when significant pressure was being put on Rather's bosses to downplay the Watergate scandal. They have been slowly tightening their grip ever since, and today we are left with a media that selects content that is neither newsworthy or objective. What we have now are snippets of corporate and government approved propaganda, interspersed between commercials. Like many people I have been forced to abandon "mainstream" media sources and look to the Internet to figure out what is really going on in the world.
- keithloughnane, on 09/06/2008, -3/+9If the mainstream media wont show him some respect we can, digg him up
- gbates31, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5You'll be pleasantly surprised to know that the MSM has been rewarded for their 24/7 fluff news pieces by diminishing viewership every year. I read somewhere that only 16-17% of the country watches news daily. That might even be a little high.
- gbates31, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5"America manufactures and exports more weapons than ANY OTHER COUNTRY."
Britain showed us up this year, barely. Every year before that we blew the rest of the world out of the water. - MixMastaKooz, on 09/06/2008, -1/+6Come on Skitzzo, there was some shady dealing with those documents. Apparently, they were copies of the originals. When the secretary who drew them up said the content of the documents were accurate, I think that's a valid enough argument. I think it's more important to ask why were the original documents destroyed and why didn't anyone go to jail for that?
Anyway, in terms of integrity, at least Dan resigned over it. What happens at other news stations when spreading false information? Why weren't the Fox broadcasters (forget their name) fired for claiming that Obama went to school at a madrassa? Why wasn't Judith Miller fired from the NYTimes for spreading FUD about WMD? Why weren't the journalist in charge of the WMD stories at msnbc, cnn, and fox not fired for not properly investigating the WMD claims? (If you read international news, BBC, der Speigel, and Le Monde) you would have realized back then that there were some serious issues with the WMD claims.).
As I've told you before, the media is profit biased. It becomes, "What bias will make us more money in advertising revenue?"
Additionally, what fault could you find in what Dan actually said? Bugs Bunny could have delivered the same content and it would still be a valid argument. Can you address that? - inactive, on 09/06/2008, -4/+9Spine transplant! f-- Yeah!
- mvanhorn, on 09/06/2008, -1/+6Digg Stage at the Big Tent in Denver for the DNC!

- Hockey13, on 09/06/2008, -3/+7Interestingly, he fails to see the beauty of what's written on the wall behind him. Digg is not perfect, but it is a huge first step in the direction of free media chosen by the people. I find more interesting stories and information in the upcoming section than I do on the main page and I find more info on the main page and comments sections than I would ever get in the mainstream media. People like to slam Digg, but it is so much better than being held to the major networks.
The free market, i.e. Kevin Rose, came up with a great solution to this huge problem. - homercles337, on 09/06/2008, -2/+6All that and not a single mention of the first neocon president and his abolishing of the Fairness Doctrine? Without the Fairness Doctrine we have no chance of seeing an independent media. Thank Reagan and the neocons for giving us this mess of Corporate Media.
- inkubusfan, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4I digg real journalism.
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5Obvious troll is obvious.
