- chrismwood, on 10/30/2009, -7/+428Jon handled it well, I thought. I think there were even moments later in the interview where he disagreed with Barghouti and it started to show a little. Either way, he didn't ridicule the heckler, he turned it into a conversation about the strong feelings on either side. Anyone who says Jon is nothing without his writers is not watching off-script moments like these. He's got solid interviewing skills and doesn't get shaken.
- dagnabbit, on 10/30/2009, -4/+245Damn she's hot.
- savvvy, on 10/30/2009, -0/+179The heckle is at minute 1:48 in clip one...
- inactive, on 10/31/2009, -36/+174This is another example of the unbelievable hostility shown towards someone that DARES to question Israel or our policies towards it.
- durruticolumn, on 10/31/2009, -1/+131
As far as pro-Palestinian perspectives go, this is the most non-controversial you could expect: An Israeli and a Palestinian united to talk about peace, justice, and non-violence. That this resulted in heckling, and was met with such nervousness by the show's producers, shows how far from a reasoned and balanced conversation we've gotten in this country. Even Israel has a more nuanced, and complex discussion of the issues than the US does. If we're ever going to solve this conflict, we have to be able to discuss it like adults, and not fly off the handle whenever any pro-Palestinian perspective is given. - PhilPerspective, on 10/31/2009, -2/+97No. Barghouti is actually one of the good guys. He wants peace in the Middle East.

- EddiePotato, on 10/31/2009, -1/+76Listen carefully and you can hear him yell, "don't taze me bro!" from the hallway.
- jsffive, on 10/31/2009, -8/+82It's important to note here that Judaism and Zionism are two distinctly different things. Judaism is a religion that's been around for thousands of years. Zionism is a colonialist ideology, that's only been around for a little over a hundred years. However, the Zionist movement has worked very hard, and very successfully at conflating the two, so that people in this country think they are one and the same. And disagreeing with the Zionist position that Israel can do whatever they want in Palestine is met, by lobby groups like AIPAC, with very serious, and sometimes career-ending accusations of "antisemitism", or as Mr. Stewart will soon find out, "self-hating Jew".
But the facts remain: Israel invaded Palestine in 1967, and despite the fact that international law strictly prohibits settling in occupied territories taken by military force, Israel has continued to persecute and oppress the Arabs in Palestine for over forty years, in the hope that they will just concede the territory.
And it needs to be made very clear that it's not the fault of "the Jews"... it's because of "the Zionists".
You don't have to be "anti-Jew" in order to disagree with the things that the government of Israel is, and has been doing. - stilesja, on 10/31/2009, -2/+69Just a quick question: Why is it that the Daily Show seems to be more "with it" regarding actual news than the supposed real news outlets? Sure they do the funny, but they get serious and tackle tough issues that aren't even touched by other orgs as well.
Bravo to the Daily show, but why can't we get a real news show that does research and reporting?
You would think that 24 hour news would allow the time for indepth discussion and, but in fact its quite the opposite. It has caused news to become "This just happened", but it is reported on without context or thought in the goal to deliver it as fast as possible. - franklymister, on 10/31/2009, -4/+65No, that's an example of a moron who doesn't know how to conduct himself in public. It could have just as easily been a heckler against the other guest.
There's no monopoly on idiocy when it comes to people shouting at each other over this issue. - rwbrinso, on 10/30/2009, -4/+63Apparently, all the producers were nervous as hell going in, just because of the guests. And you could almost see the tension through the teevee the entire show too.
- Aspire36, on 10/30/2009, -0/+56I have a feeling were going to start seeing more of this.
That is, people yelling "Liar!" on national TV. - pimpofpixels, on 10/31/2009, -12/+64It's nice to see a balanced view of the conflict get some screen time.
It's sad to see how effective the media has been in framing the Palestinians as villains. - Shuk, on 10/31/2009, -3/+46The Middle East conflict is one of the few conflicts in modern society in which everyone is hyper-emotional, fringe, and outlandish. On one hand, I know many Jewish people who oppose foreign occupation and war in general (Iraq War, etc.) and are very well-reasoned, but on this subject, they unquestionably support Israel's militaristic right-wing government and turn to claims of anti-semitism when there is critical thought. On the other hand, I know people who are critical thinkers and open minded individuals who can only scream 'genocide' at Israel and accuse pro-Israelers of 'heartlessness', etc.
Jon Stewart showed BALLS when deciding on having this conversation, and he managed the interview very well. A dangerous subject, but it was handled by a true pro. - wtrwlkr, on 10/31/2009, -1/+39I've seen several people on right-leaning blogs say exactly that about Stewart.
- savvvy, on 10/30/2009, -5/+43Its amazing, from what I can hear that heckler managed to rip off Joe Wilson by shouting "You lie!" and Kanye bye saying "Imma have to leave now...." as he's getting dragged out of the studio. Doesn't he have anything original to shout?
- Joshislong, on 10/31/2009, -4/+42Imma lechu finish, but Joe Wilson had one of the best interruptions of all time!
- TheCrazyAsian, on 10/31/2009, -0/+35"I invite people to do some research"
Key line. and SO important (i cant quote the context exactly, sorry)
I took a Middle East History Class. It was the most rewarding and eye-opening class I ever took.
It doesn't matter what your opinion is. Just KNOW what you are talking about. That is my major irk. People form radical opinions based on assumptions and their own facts they formed in their head. Please, just learn about what is going on. You can't form a legitimate opinion without knowledge.
With this, we could form constructive conversation over the Middle East - opticwind, on 10/31/2009, -3/+38She's not Israeli, she's Jewish. Not the same thing.
- detcade, on 10/31/2009, -6/+39More proof of the immaturity of these sort of people.. it's childish rivalry taken seriously. It's like religions and nationalism are the same as baseball.
- ldailey06, on 10/31/2009, -1/+34'A heckler on the daily show, this oughta be....whoa who is that on the left?'
- EliteBeat, on 10/30/2009, -1/+32As much as the shows about comedy, it's also about pointing out all the crap that goes on. I'm glad they handled the heckler the way they did.
- kitsua, on 10/31/2009, -0/+31Is she as yummy in real life?
- Marinesniper, on 10/31/2009, -2/+32She spoke at my College last semester. She signed my book and said hi :)
- ruckfules, on 10/31/2009, -7/+35The "wipe Israel off the map" statement is not a statement that Ahmadinejad made. It is a mis-attributed, mistranslation of what he said contextually.
- rocknog, on 10/31/2009, -0/+27Basically, it comes down to this. All news is entertainment these days. The reason the major news networks are so shallow is because people would get bored and change the channel if they ever actually covered something in-depth. Jon Stewart has more flexibility in that regard - because he does jokes, he already has the audience hooked, which gives him the opportunity to actually get into more complex issues and ask the questions that need to be asked. And it's the fact that he does a comedy show, not a news show, that gives him the flexibility to make the jokes he makes in the first place (because the jokes are clearly not bias-free).
In essence, it really is a modern-day case of "The jester is the only one allowed to speak the truth." - elliotys, on 10/31/2009, -1/+27dugg for "teevee"
- spartan777, on 10/31/2009, -24/+49Stewart repeats 2 major falsehoods. 1- Iran is *not* developing weapons, and there is zero evidence otherwise. 2- Ahmadinejad did *not* state that he'll "wipe Israel off the map."
Baltzer did a good job though, pointing out that Israel breaks more UN resolutions than either Iran or Iraq, and that we need to hold them to the same standards we hold everyone else to. - inactive, on 10/31/2009, -0/+25Except Digg isn't real life.
- 2Six119, on 10/31/2009, -0/+22No, she's hot.
- Laminarcissus, on 10/31/2009, -6/+26So what are you implying, that Ahmadinejad's position on Israel, Jews, and the Holocaust are being misunderstood?
That's he's really all cool with the whole Israel thing?
Or are you saying that the one "off the map" statement was a specific mis-translation but, let's face it, it wasn't far off the mark anyway? - Spoomeister, on 10/31/2009, -0/+19Yankees suck.
- rudern, on 10/31/2009, -0/+19that's like second base right?
- Ceryn1126, on 10/31/2009, -1/+18Elliotys I'm happy for you. and Imma let you finish, but Kanye had one of the best television interruptions of all time... OF ALL TIME!
- eastbayjz, on 10/31/2009, -6/+23Last time I checked, both Arabs and Jews are Semitic, so why is it only anti-semitic if you call out Jews, while it's not anti-semitic if you call Arabs liars?
That heckler is anti-semitic - opticwind, on 10/31/2009, -3/+18I'd smorgis her burg.
- rocknog, on 10/31/2009, -1/+16I disagree - the heckler was like a child throwing a temper-tantrum. He just wanted attention. I think Jon Stewart's approach of simply ignoring him was a terrific way to handle the situation. By ignoring him, he made it clear that the heckler wasn't going to get what he wanted by acting like a ***** infant.
- opticwind, on 10/31/2009, -2/+17Haha, I'm sorry but I think quoting those made it all the more epic. I don't agree with the heckler, but hey he's just an IRL troll.
- zephyear, on 10/31/2009, -2/+17it's amazing how many american jews consider themselves "progressive" but want to continue a system of apartheid
- bobfell, on 10/31/2009, -10/+24I agree Jon did a wonderful job of interviewing but he handled the heckler horribly. The people on the stage have earned the right to be there and express their opinion but the heckler was just being an obstructionist the same as the radical Palestinians and the hawkish Israeli government.
This radicalism is exactly what Barghouti and Baltzer were saying is the roadblock to peace and I think there are even more Israelis that want to fuel the war to keep the status quo and continued settling of Palestinian lands than Palestinians who will not stop the violence. - Bodhinature, on 10/31/2009, -0/+14"The Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem (een rezhim-e eshghalgar-e qods) must [vanish from] the page of time (bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmoud_Ahmadinejad_a ... - Laminarcissus, on 10/31/2009, -1/+15That would be like counting LeBron James' high school record as part of his NBA career.
- Koushiro, on 10/31/2009, -1/+14Think that this heckler topic isn't the best topic for this article when it's one guy rather then like 14 minutes of interview.
A good interview too, nice work. - rdoger6424, on 10/31/2009, -0/+13Doesn't he write a lot of his material?
- homeworklarry, on 10/31/2009, -0/+13That's a special feeling, Lloyd.
- diemunkiesdie, on 10/31/2009, -0/+12What did the Heckler say the second time? I couldn't hear him!
- Bodhinature, on 10/31/2009, -0/+12'kaosethema'
- inactive, on 10/31/2009, -3/+14i couldnt agree more..im surprised that even made it to air, the media usually censors that sort of talk..
- spartan777, on 10/31/2009, -2/+12Ahmadinejad can be likened to Bush, they both mouthed off about things to wip up their political bases, even though they weren't necessarily serious about much of it. The main difference is that Ahmadinejad has hardly any power compared to the POTUS. Also, the president of Iran doesn't have any control over the military, that's Ali Khamenei, who also holds a lot of the other powers we in the US and the Western world usually associate with the President as having.
Does Ahmadinejad say foolish things? Yes. Does it mean anything? Not really. -
