- golfgeek, on 11/16/2007, -1/+38this guy is a hack, there is absolutely no way someone can control me through sub...... this guy is awesome..... that is the most amazing thing I have ever seen.
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -1/+16Covert hypnosis is called pacing and leading, I used to pace people at the airport and then try to lead them, it's a good way to kill time waiting for flights.
- Neuticals, on 11/16/2007, -1/+13For what purpose? Were you trying to get them to guess the card in your pocket?
- Godlesswanderer, on 11/16/2007, -1/+13It's amazing what Derren Brown can do. Check out some of the other things he's done. If you want more, just search his name on YouTube and you'll get tons of videos.

The person who's being intuitive is picking up on subliminal clues without even realizing it, processing those clues rationally but unconsciously, and then consciously becoming aware of the result of that processing.
- Neuralphreak, on 11/16/2007, -2/+13Darren Brown is the Devil. He's not natural. I've seen him "control" people through other people and he doesn't even TALK to the targets, He put his hand on the back of some lady, told her to focus on another person and think "STOP" and when she does, the other person stopped walking, turned around, stared and looked confused. This was from a block away, and it freaked me out. SO obviously, me being freaked = Darren Brown is the DEVIL!
- SpectralSounds, on 11/16/2007, -1/+10"Now, watch me bend this Stillson wrench with my psychoflexitive powers. Cmon, bend."
- domdunc, on 11/16/2007, -1/+9I saw Derren Brown's stage show a few years ago. Pretty mind blowing because he pull stuff like this on the whole audience at once.
- juniorb, on 11/16/2007, -4/+10It's not a scam. Some people are highly suggestive. Just look at the Republican party. Oooo snap.

- Roblodocus, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4Covert doesn't mean against their will, it means without their consent.

- raid517, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4Brown is good, however he is a mentalist and he uses traditional misdirection methods to make you think that somehow you know something and are in on the trick - when in fact it is you he is tricking. It is a form of confidence trick - Derren cons you into thinking that you are a participant by telling you often that it is a trick and that no magic is involved. Thus when you see him trick his mark you are doubly amazed, because you think you know how it's done - when in fact you don't because it is you who is being tricked.
- aleclerc, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5But less of a douche??
- stotty, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4It's Derren, not Darren!
- warfang, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5how about you read the text
- sancho, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3You never see the stunts that fail, because he doesn't air them. You only see the impressive ones that succeed.
- 7fields, on 11/16/2007, -2/+5The "color of the suit" comment he made in the video made me think of the suits they were all wearing, which were black. I thought clubs. I didn't pick up any number clues at all and just guessed 8 on my own.
- Soofi, on 11/16/2007, -2/+5Hypnotoad > Darren Brown
- TedTschopp, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3All hail hypnotoad
- hierophantus, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4Explanation is below the video.
- UrbanVoyeur, on 11/16/2007, -3/+6My favorite is getting people to repeat what you say. In a party setting with flowing conversation and a drink or two, you can get the person two or three people over to repeat your phrases as if the came up with them on their own. They will incorporate the words verbatim into their own sentences. You don't have to look at the target. Keep your voice low, even and distinct - only the person standing or sitting right next to you will hear it clearly. Works well at tables or in small circles. Not everyone is susceptible, but there's usually one in a group.
Add a small hand gesture and it will look like a Jedi mind trick to the person who can hear you clearly. - WarriorDan, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4His name is Derren Brown...
- Haecceity, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2I thought that the explanation was pretty clear. He was giving verbal and gestural clues as to what card he had in his pocket. The text explains what these are and when they happen.
- UrbanVoyeur, on 11/17/2007, -0/+2Humptydank, I think you overreacted a bit. This is hypnosis as a mildly amusing party trick, nothing more. Try to keep some perspective.
- juniorb, on 11/16/2007, -1/+3That's because, for some reason, hypnotism and subliminal messages are not nearly as effective when recorded and played back. You really need to be there, looking him right in the eyes in order for it to work.
- timdorr, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2The stopping lady in the street was an actor. He wasn't programming that lady, he was programming the woman next to him inside to pick the appropriate person. You'll notice during that sketch, when he first meets the woman, he shakes her hand kind of abruptly. This is to shock the brain into a state where suggestion can be given quite easily. He used that technique to get the woman to not want to go past the point where they shook hands. Yes, it's eerie, but it's all based in psychology :)
- passedoutghost, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Yeah I tried this on my girlfriend to get her to have SEX with me. Didn't work. I even did the subtle hip thrusts.
- everfalling, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Darren is very skeptical and acknowledges that everything he does is a trick. he would never go out and purport he had any real magical powers. the trick is to figure out WHY those things happen. he could have just been lucky with the woman on the street turning around.
- CanTheSpam, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2The best way to protect yourself in a knife fight is to study how to fight with a knife.
I didn't realize until after I started learning about hypnotism that the salesperson at Cingular had used it on me a couple months prior.
Get off your high horse. You'll find that this stuff is genuinely fascinating. - tutivlahos, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2He's not paranormal. He uses a combination of "magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship". Again, not paranormal.
- everfalling, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2there are a few visual clues he gives if you watch it carefully. it helps to know the guy picks the 7 of hearts. look at Darren's body language, and watch what he does with his hands. if you notice, when he talks about picking a suit, he makes a heart pumping motion on his chest. Then, when he talks about picking a number, with his right hand he draws a 7 in the air. it's all subliminal, all suggestion. he has no guarantee that the guy will pick the right card.
- krebcycle, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2I see you can read.
- LokitheComplex, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Isn't the seven of hearts a really common card to choose though?
In a stressful situation they just say that.
I'm very doubtful of Brown's psychological control over people. I think he's just using traditional trickery but implying its psychological control. But he is very very good at it. - inactive, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Finally someone corrects it.
- Haecceity, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Yes indeed. Of all Bandler and Grinder's books I found "The Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson" to be the most rewarding in terms of learning something about how hypnosis works. Erickson was the true master and I wish I could have seen him in action. He'd probably have Derren pretending to be a chicken in two seconds flat. And if not, it would be like watching two Jedi masters going after each other.
- Humptydank, on 11/16/2007, -1/+2And ten years later you'll find that you have achieved your larger goal, which is to wake up and realize you are friendless and alone, because you were somehow psychotically comfortable with manipulating other people as objects in social situations, rather than getting to know them and forming an actual emotional bond.
You should probably get a little help with this now, before you start keeping dead birds in shoeboxes and stuff. - inactive, on 11/17/2007, -1/+2That would be a funny outtake, if it shows him doing it like 30 times before getting the right response.
- stotty, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1It's Derren, NOT Darren!
- Zeusandhera, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Dang, I guessed 7 of hearts too...
- stotty, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1It's Derren, not Darren!
- iiDLii, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1best comment so far:)
- ellecon, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1This is why I always carry something to read.
- inactive, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Anyone know where I can download an ebook on Conversational/black opps/covert/NLP or whatever name you call it hypnosis?
- ellecon, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1Dugg for mention of "the Devil". Haven't seen him around for a while. Maybe the whole thing was a complete set-up like every other form of entertainment packaged for public consumption?
- jebudas, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Maybe this trick was really an effective use of subliminal manipulation, but I will never believe the authenticity of anything that is recorded. How do we know it wasnt an actor? How do we know the trick didnt fail 51 times before he got it right? I guess seeing (on tv) isnt believing.
- Interjection, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Here are a few funny links where Derren fails...he knows that his tricks don't work on everybody.
