- RamezaniK, on 10/31/2009, -9/+126It's NBC's fault. Anyone who watched Jay at 11:30 is likely to be tuning in to watch him at 10 because they liked him. Most of that same crowd never stayed up for Conan, so they aren't going to watch Conan at 11:30. Conan appeals to the younger crowd, which is likely to be "out and about" between 11:30 and 12:30, and likely to be back home by 12:30 for Late Night. But then Jimmy Fallon just isn't funny, so people don't watch him.
- Garlik, on 10/31/2009, -4/+54That's because crap appeals to more people than actual comedy.
- SpazAttack5000, on 10/31/2009, -4/+48Conan is way funnier and that is all I care about. But why aren't I watching him right now?
- whiteyak41, on 10/31/2009, -4/+43If you're going to write a non-opinion article, learn how to ***** write AP style. The first time a name is used you write Conan O'Brian, every time after that you only write O'Brian. 9th graders know this! As Gob would say, C'MON!
- djlr181, on 10/31/2009, -3/+36Letterman at Taco Bell!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwvdmU36i5U - RiMac, on 10/31/2009, -9/+39On one hand, I'm glad to see Letterman do well, on the other, I hate to see this attributed to Jay Leno's talent in ANY way...
- inactive, on 10/31/2009, -0/+24Carlos Mencia doesn't have a show.
It feels so good to be able to say that. - TonyTheTerrible, on 10/31/2009, -1/+19it's because viewers are afraid of nodding off and waking up to jimmy fallon's show. it scares the ***** out of me, at least.
- chrisinsocalif, on 10/31/2009, -2/+19I have to give it to Craig Ferguson, he is way underrated and so far the most entertaining night show host in my opinion.
- Falas, on 10/31/2009, -6/+23Conan should have just joined Stewart and Colbert on Comedy Central, he's closer to them than he is Leno or Letterman.
- Dagreenman, on 10/31/2009, -9/+25If jeff Dunham didn't have his own show, Leno would be the most unfunny guy on TV.
- QueEsAmor, on 10/31/2009, -0/+16Wouldn't it be a better comparison to look at Leno's numbers in his first year, rather than his 17th year?
- ZombieSociety, on 10/31/2009, -2/+18Ratings =/= quality. Not now, not ever.
- txballer, on 10/31/2009, -6/+21When they made the move to LA the show lost its "edge" and probably most of the writers/staff. It went from masturbating bear and camel toe Annie to running around the studio with Terry Hatcher and getting into a fake feud with the mayor of NewarK NJ.
Joel Goddard and his male Asian prostitutes, Abe Vagoda and the funny/bizarre dialog between Max Weinberg and Conan has been reduced to Andy butting in and making a mildly funny comment. They even changed the Year 2000 sketch to the Year 3000.
NBC totally gutted the show of its former self and unfortunately for everyone including Conan who made the move from NY to LA the show will probably become another 'Chevy Chase Show' if things don't pick up.
The ratings demonstrate that viewers want more "edge" and less "you can't say that, we're on earlier!". - Mujokan, on 10/31/2009, -1/+16 ↷

↳ ☠ - EliteBeat, on 10/31/2009, -12/+26First of all, STFU with the Mr. crap
2nd Connan is funny...but only when hes doing stuff. Like going out and talking to people on the streets or when he became the store Santa. Hes not funny when he has actors in "Zany" costumes doing skits. - supertaliman, on 10/31/2009, -5/+18Conan>Jay....It's just that no one knows it yet.
- pilot3033, on 10/31/2009, -0/+12yeah, but less money involved
- fabregas88, on 10/31/2009, -4/+15I'd just like to repeat: Jimmy Fallon, Jay Leno and Carson Daly suck.
- PhillAholic, on 10/31/2009, -0/+11The decision of putting Conan up against Colbert wasn't a good idea. As a commenter over at the Time said they have the same audience. There was even a cross over gag during the strike. Not a good move by NBC.
- ricksickle, on 10/31/2009, -1/+10I wish he'd do more skits. I love when he goes n does stuff like that Ford thing the other night. Just watching people trying to stay serious around him is hilarious.
- ZombieSociety, on 10/31/2009, -1/+10Carlos Mencia.
- BananaGrabber, on 10/31/2009, -0/+9Conan isn't political in the slightest. Any form conflict seems bother him. He's not like them at all.
- Daniel591992, on 10/31/2009, -1/+10Yup, NYTimes reporters can't write.....
- SpectreFire, on 10/31/2009, -1/+9The problem is not Conan, it's not NBC, it's us. We're not watching it. That's just exactly what is going on right now. Sure, we say that Conan is much better than Letterman or Leno, but means ***** if we're not tuning in at 11:30 to watch it.
Don't give me any of that rating =/= quality *****. It's not about whether or not the show is good, it's about whether or not it can afford to stay up. Shows aren't done for free, they cost money, and if we don't watch it, no one will make them.
The thing I hate the most about my generation is that we blame everyone else for everything that goes wrong. ***** take responsibility. Firefly didn't die because it wasn't good, it died because none of you ***** watched it. Same thing is going to happen with Dollhouse. Take responsibility for what you do and stop complaining whenever networks cancel shows that you yourself don't watch until a week later on youtube. - Anzat, on 10/31/2009, -2/+10Last time I watched Conan, most of his show consisted of him telling us what a great show he has for us tonight. I don't remember anything else from the show. Is he still like that?
- Twenty, on 10/31/2009, -0/+7Actually, NYTimes' naming convention is usually spot-on. In particular, they always refer to (using an example), Conan O'Brien as Mr. O'Brien for all people referred to in the story.
But again, this is like, a NYTimes 'blog' whatever that means. - inactive, on 10/31/2009, -7/+14Jay has a lot of class, I always liked him over Lettermen. Neither were particularly funny in my opinion though. Conan is pretty funny though. I haven't watched late night in years though.
- z0s01, on 10/31/2009, -2/+9The one thing that came out of this for me is that I learned how genius Craig Ferguson is.
- Cerebron, on 10/31/2009, -2/+9The bits with actors in 'zany' costumes are funny because they aren't funny.
- pilot3033, on 10/31/2009, -1/+7They said the same of Leno v Carson. Give Conan a while a settle into a new timeslot, he'll find his audience again.
- diggbigwig, on 10/31/2009, -1/+7You have to be kidding. Fallon? Really?
- BotchaMcCoola, on 10/31/2009, -0/+6You are getting all balled up. The issue here is comedy talent. Tell us about the harrassment though. That has not made the news yet.
- Dodobutt222, on 10/31/2009, -1/+7You two have summed it up very nicely. Conan's age group isn't watching tv during his time slot and Colbert is now his competitor. NBC sucks at management.
- ryrocker, on 10/31/2009, -2/+8i love his monologues.
- palehorse864, on 10/31/2009, -0/+6"She's gone already chief" has become a bit of an in-joke with my friends and family.
Heh, and does this guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwvdmU36i5U#t=3m56s in the video remind anyone else of Keanu Reeves? - BigGooseX, on 10/31/2009, -3/+8Was it just me, or did the author's use of "Mr." weird anyone out? Mr. O'Brien, Mr. Leno, and Mr. Letterman just doesn't sound right at all.
- thezoner, on 10/31/2009, -0/+5that was awesome. how have i never seen that before???
- enozten, on 10/31/2009, -3/+8not true, conan was getting killed by letterman even before leno premiered
and also, young people aren't out at 11:30 on every weekday, coming home at 12:30 just in time to watch conan.
conan is just much less funny now than before, and he does all sorts of corporate garbage that makes him look even more stale - ZombieSociety, on 10/31/2009, -0/+5"They said the same of Leno v Carson."
Hell, they said the same thing of Conan vs. Letterman. Conan barely escaped his first WEEKS of Late Night with his job intact. - Amadeus2490, on 10/31/2009, -1/+5Much like Obama, we should really wait until at least the second year before we start judging their performance; The first year's always weird.
- wozup, on 10/31/2009, -0/+4Except The Roots are amazing...
- PhillAholic, on 10/31/2009, -0/+4I'm glad it wasn't just me being slightly annoyed at how I kept having to read the full name.
- MOJIRA, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3I was thinking the opposite. Move Colbert and Stewart to network television. Not sure how that would work though.
- FearlessFreep, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3"Are you Howard Stern?"
- Kidddrunkadelic, on 10/31/2009, -3/+6That "feud" with the mayor from Jersey was beyond *****.
- Schpamm, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2Conan was starting to get a little stale on his NY show. They were running out of original content and relying too much on proven material. I know that's the formula for all late night shows but it was like clockwork with Conan.
** Self-depricating joke about himself and the show
** "Be cool my babies!"
** Bikini string dance
** One mildly amusing quick sketch with the same 2 writers
** A longer proven but overrused sketch like Celebrity Survey or In the Year 2000
** Obligatory hot babe guest who conan purrs over
** A familiar guest who Conan has good comedic rhythm with
There are only two repeating sketches that still crack me up like they did the first day. Triumph and the Schwarzenegger/Martha Stewart conference call videos. But I think both of those were created by Robert Smigel.
I still enjoy watching Conan but the move to LA didn't really refresh most of the stale concepts, and it probably only got worse because now they have to be less edgier with a more primetime TV spot. Conan was always about inserting stupid silly side stuff but it was better when that content could be crazy stuff like the Masturbating Bear. He's still better than Leno, but overall, I think Letterman is the best for that slot. Letterman's interaction with his guests are by far the best of all 3.
BTW, I don't know if I blame NBC because it sounds like they were afraid they would lose him to another studio if they didn't offer him the Late Show time slot. So I guess it might be Conan's fault or his agent's fault. Should have just stayed where he was at. - themastersb, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2I guess there's more older people than younger people and that's why Jay Leno had better ratings. Also older people have more free time to watch Leno. I stopped watching Conan once college started because I haven't had the time to do so.
- MOJIRA, on 11/01/2009, -1/+3I don't care if Jay's a classy guy. Being nice isn't a prerequisite for comedy, it's actually often a hindrance.
And I disagree, Letterman is often and still very funny. - Shorties, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2ALRIGHT....I'LL... TAKE... TWO... HARD... ONES...
