- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -1/+43Sadly, this is not surprising. I got rid of Comcast over a year ago as soon as FiOS became available. They wouldn't credit me for services I paid for and never received. They could never get my digital channels all working properly. Until I canceled they offered nothing except to send another tech school retard out to tell me what the last 10 "techs" had. After I canceled they starting offering me free HDTVs and free service, etc. No thanks!
- booyahbitch, on 12/13/2008, -3/+18I am digging you down because I can not get FIOS!!!!
- DocCochran, on 12/13/2008, -1/+16If a cable company starts trying to give me HDTVs, I take the HDTVs.
- adml_shake, on 12/13/2008, -1/+15Is anyone seriously surprised at these stories of comcasts *****?
- nJectid, on 12/13/2008, -0/+13***** comcrap.
- Typhoon2009, on 12/13/2008, -0/+13The actual products they offer aren't terrible. The problem is, when one of their products goes wonky, their customer service is utter *****.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -1/+12People should stop getting service through this company. They are just horrible on all fronts. Find another provider.
- MooseOfReason, on 12/12/2008, -0/+11I'm glad Kirk had a good sense of humor.
But Kirk should have looked at some kind of warranty, maybe gone to his state attorney general. - method7670, on 12/13/2008, -0/+10comcast = crooks
- Nairebis, on 12/13/2008, -0/+10Wait, the box started a fire to the point that it destroyed his TV set, and he didn't send a threatening bill to Comcast?
Sheesh, dude, don't be such a doormat. Their box could've burned down your whole frickin' house!
Sorry, but this guy is a sucker. Comcast's response sucks, but it's hard to feel sorry for someone so milquetoast. I'm reminded of the old saying, "It is morally wrong to allow a sucker to keep his money."
He should've been on the phone pounding his fist demanding an explanation for why Comcast put a flaming box of death in his house. - datacowboy, on 12/13/2008, -0/+9I hate Comcast. I can never consistently receive all of my channels. Whole blocks will disappear for no reason. I'm with them because it's the only service available to me that works with an HD TiVo. And per the FCC, Comcast is mandated to support cablecards. But when I call with a reception problem, they want to send out a tech who has NO training or experience troubleshooting cablecard issues. It ends up being a complete waste of time.
If FiOS was in my area, or when DirecTV starts offering an HD TiVo, I'm canceling immediately. - inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+7It's amazing how big corporations can screw people. If this was the "little tech cable co" from local origins, the damages would be covered by insurance, the box would be replaced and a letter or staffer would be sent to asses that both customer was happy and the work provided performed to a good standard. Also the little tech cable company would make sure the contractor was a suitable character. For this to happen with a big company. forget it...never will,,,
- spectxim, on 12/13/2008, -0/+7I use to work at a similar cable company. If you had seen what people had done to perfectly brand new equipment such as cable modems and cable receiver boxes, if most of you werre running the business would probably be pretty skeptical too; whether is was boxes burn to hell with candles, liquid poured in them, the smokers box covered in a thick layer of tar, or the dreaded cockroach box that's fate was to be retrieved by throwing it in 3 trash bags and hanging it outside the back of your van while you took it back to the office.
However on the ladder, if the box was actually defective(I've seen people actually start them on fire by doing dumb stuff like tapping all the venting holes shut to keep out dirt..), Comcast should really be in debt of fixing the damage. I know most cable companies repair damages for free when you get dirt on a rug or drill wrongly through siding--this should be no different. - Cycline3, on 12/13/2008, -0/+7If I had to live somewhere that I had to use Comcast, I'd give up the Internet and TV and just start farming - like raising fainting goats or something.
- slapded, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6Google Cable where art thou?
by 2015 this will happen hopefully - stellarceltic, on 12/13/2008, -3/+8"After I canceled they starting offering me free HDTVs..."
I'm calling *****. - inactive, on 12/13/2008, -1/+6No, not BS. They offered me a 19" HDTV with DVD built-in.
@DocCochran... I didn't take it because I got a free 19" HDTV for getting phone, tv and internet bundle with Verizon. I pay less now and get 3X faster net and many more tv channels, especially HD. - slapded, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5I want fios but it isnt in my zip yet... please fios.. 23116
- dddavid, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5I want fios too, but I'm not sure they're even planning on doing my state anytime soon, let alone my city or zip. Went to website, doesn't bother to tell you what their predicted expansion plans/timeline are. (Just -- give us your email so we can spam you, I mean let you know when it's available.) Please fios..77024 (Houston).

Sue Comcast for pain and suffering $150,000
Then buy a better box. - DigDugDigger, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5That's COMCASTIC!
- pswar, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4This is what happens when there is only one player in the market. What happened to fairness in business? Comcast has no competition in the markets that it operates in. Add a competition and i am sure it would operate a lot responsibly.
I recently had to deal with a similar company for VoIP and Comcast pales in comparison. It's called Lingo.
There should be some laws around bad business practices. Instead of banning gay marriages, govt should be banning these kinds of business practices. - maz2331, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4Sure - just deduct that amount from the absolutely HUGE liability suit that will be filed by my attorney in the wake of such an event.

- dddavid, on 12/13/2008, -1/+5Correction: Not enough electricity goes through a properly working cable box to start a fire. If something shorts out however, that is entirely possible.
- andrewlotta, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3It seems to be available in Houston judging from the map linked below. It is available mostly on the east (and I think west?) coast. The town of Mahwah (where I used to live) in New Jersey was the first in the country to get it. I have had it ever since, and I would never switch back.
Phone, TV, and internet, for one low price :-P
http://www.dslreports.com/gmaps/fios - Trigononamous, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Dugg for Kirk.
- datacowboy, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3I agree, sometimes you get a bad card. But I have gone through numerous card swaps. Between 4 HD TiVo units, I have probably swapped out 20 - 30 cards. And the story is the same. Everything works fine for a month or two, and then I just start losing channels. Like I lose authorization for some channels. And nothing on my side has changed. It's very frustrating.
It's a basic problem of cable vs satellite. Satellite has fewer connection points in the system, and more highly skilled folks managing those points. Cable has connection points all over the place, and a complete range of folks (from the skilled to the contracted retarded) managing and possibly disrupting those points.
When I had DirecTV, signal stability was never a problem. I only left because they dropped TiVo. Now that DirecTV will be offering TiVo again, in 2009, I'll go back as soon as that happens. - kismetropolis, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Have reported this story to one of the Comcast guys in philly.
Where I live, if a box catches fire, Comcast considers it defective equipment and does not charge the customer. This sounds like a case of poorly trained representatives not being willing to go the extra mile for the customer as should be the case. - sauceSquatch, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Easier said than done, in Chicago the only other cable internet provider is RCN, and I haven't heard anything too great about them either. But your only other provider options are to go with DSL and if you don't have home phone then it's a waste to get it installed just for DSL. So when it comes down to the bills it's a wash and you actually loose money by going through a phone company. If there was a Satalite internet option I would try it. I've been with Comcast for 10 years and they treat me like ***** over the phone, send any wack-job with a truck who berely speaks english to your house and I'm constantly needing to look over the bill. Right now I just changed service to upgrade and it's the worst thing I could have done, I got billed twice $250 for an installation that was supposedly free.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Self-Immolation is totally underated. It's sex with someone that I love.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2You can't really troubleshoot cable card issues. If it doesn't work, it's broken. They're very tough to actually troubleshoot.
- rasone77, on 12/13/2008, -1/+3Every cable company I've ever dealt with has been difficult to work with for anything other than pay-per veiw services. That's why I swore them off years ago when streaming internet television became available. Besides who wants to pay a hundred dollars a month to watch commercials and programing that's dictated by schedule. I can watch only the shows I want to when I want to and never have to deal with automated customer service calls.
- kismetropolis, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2As of yesterday, this problem has been resolved, with the customer's charges removed, credit for the trouble, and services restored.
- bpgunny, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2That'll teach him to DVR Mission Impossible.
- Gareth321, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Dear uzzy
While we all enjoy a good movie now and then, quality is everything. If I'm going to dedicate a couple of hours of my precious time to watch something, I expect it to really satisfy me, emotionally and intelligently. I actually clicked on your link and I discovered links and "movies" which made me shudder. They're the sort of fillers which I wouldn't expect any half-decent person to accept under any circumstances. I even saw Redtube, uzzy. Do you know how much this offends the movie-buff in me?
So we have a problem. You obviously don't care for movies. What purpose could you have for posting a nonsensical quip, vaguely related to subject material, followed directly by a link to a ghastly advertising infested cesspool of garbage movie links? I think we all know the answer here, uzzy. You're a *****. A ***** who thinks he can make money by spamming worthwhile and entertaining websites with your filth. You don't care about us or our feelings. You even insulted movies everywhere by claiming "free movies".
By in large most here would assume you're pretty low on the evolutionary scale. Barely above squirrels, though you possess an uncanny ability to use a mouse. Therein lies the problem. When we find you (and eventually, we will find you), we will make it so that you cannot operate a mouse anymore. We might even go so far as to extend that to keyboards - possibly 'other' things, if you know what I mean. I guess the gist of this schpiel is that my hatred of you runs so deep that I wouldn't hesitate to harm you in the street if I met you, and I don't usually say this sort of thing, least not to strangers. You're THAT much of a *****.
***** you.
Regards
Gareth - Corvidae, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1I did that. Then they bought Adelphia, so now have no cable choices. It's either satellite, which is too damn slow, or Bell south, who actually caused me more grief than Comcast.
- nickycakes, on 12/13/2008, -2/+3As much as I hate comcast, I don't understand how people complain when they don't get quick answers after only using telephone and written letters to customer service. Comcast has customer service twitter FFS. Even if the dudes internet were out, he could use that from his phone. One less moron on the internet.
- Corvidae, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Kirk should be hiring a lawyer to make Comcast pay for his burned up house. By demanding payment, they're admitting they own the faulty equipment that caused the fire.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -5/+6I hate Comcast, but I also hate The Consumerist for overglorifying their stories of misery and woe.
The article neglects to mention whether or not Kirk did something stupid to cause the fire, like cover his cable box with a DVD player or a cloth or something.
I deal with cable boxes every day. They don't just ignite on their own. If they're malfunctioning, sure they'll overheat. But never to the point of starting a fire. Not enough electricity actually goes through those boxes to cause that.
I don't work for Comcast, and I hate them with every fiber of my being, but a box still isn't going to just explode like that. Unless Comcast loaded it with black powder. - Nerys, on 12/13/2008, -1/+2well that depends on WHY the comcast box caused the fire. I am no fan of comcast though I love there service (cable and analog cable tv) works great almost never goes down even though it costs me an arm and a leg.
IF he stuffed it inside a tight cabinet and it was dusty as heck that's the users fault
alas none of that is in the article. It appears comcast just straight up ignored him and said pay us $88 for the box.
I would be a little pissed too :-) - kd1s, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1No it's not *****. Matter of fact I've been pretty happy with my Cox service. But I get constant mailings from Verizon. The rate goes between $39 a month to $99 a month and the give-aways include digital cameras, a small 32" HD set, $100 Amex gift cards, etc. none of which could get me to switch to Verizon.
I have a burning hatred for Verizon as a matter of fact. I guess it's because I've dealt with them on a technical level and understand that the minimum wage flunkies don't know jack ***** about FiOS or copper for that matter. - dialector, on 12/13/2008, -4/+4I have used Comcast for 5 years and never had one problem. Speed is fine, stability is fine, price is fine. For the last two years I have only paid $33 a month for the internet. Verizon did just install the new FiOS lines in my neighborhood so I have extra leverage to keep my price low or switch.
