- rmeyers, on 03/19/2008, -5/+62ahh. submitting it first still doesnt get me any diggs. i will make the front page one of these years.
- JNudda, on 03/19/2008, -0/+56They should follow this up with releasing "The Hour" on torrents :)
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+56Funny how government owned television like the CBC in Canad and BBC in the UK are more innovative than the private American channels....
- TritonX, on 03/19/2008, -0/+46Well, since the CBC is paid for with our taxes, it is a minimum they make it available with the cheapest distribution method there is for everyone. At least we won't be paying for their bandwidth.
- HCviolence, on 03/19/2008, -0/+42I pay for this channel with my taxes, all Canadians do. It should be free to all. Way to go CBC.
- seanthebond, on 03/19/2008, -2/+37I guess you've never watched shows like 'The Mercer Report', or 'This Hour Has 22 Minutes'.
- Jadey, on 03/19/2008, -0/+32The official announcement was made this morning: http://www.cbc.ca/nextprimeminister/blog/2008/03/c ...
and there will be NO commercials. - TnTBass, on 03/19/2008, -1/+33CBC continues to surprise me these days. The programming used to suck - it was always so dry and boring.
Now, they have some great shows (Little Mosque on the Prairie, The Hour, jPod) and are doing wicked things like this. I am amazed.
Keep it up CBC. - smacksaw, on 03/19/2008, -1/+27While there's a lot of great shows, The Fifth Estate and other investigative specials they've done will be the motherload when they get released.
I always feel strange thinking that as an American, the best investigative journalism about our affairs is 60 Minutes which really pales in comparison to the depth and hard-hitting topics chosen by The Fifth Estate. Not that I love the idea about foreigners being the ones to educate us on what's happening in the US, the amount of freedom CBC has when it chooses US-relevant topics is far greater than what we have at home.
What I'd really like is for them to put up segments from CBC Newsworld and Politics, specifically. - Waiting2awake, on 03/19/2008, -0/+20TALKING to AMERICANS......
Wasn't it after Mercer pwned Bush that was "kindly" asked to leave? Something about congratulating Canada on our brand new Saskatchewan Naval base? Or was it the annual Toronto polar bear hunt? - inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+17He congratulated our Prime Minister, Jean Poutine, for endorsing him. And then he called Canada the US's most important neighbour of the North.

- Rikushix, on 03/19/2008, -0/+16If they do this with George Strombopolous' show I will be a very happy person indeed. Go Canada.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+15You would get more diggs if your title was the following: "CBC Releases TV-Show via BitTorrent For Mac and Linux!!!"
- beejay54, on 03/19/2008, -1/+14Not surprising at all. The CBC is kicking ass lately and they are *quite* tech/web savvy.
- randomchar, on 03/19/2008, -2/+15Scene rips of TV shows gets released about 15 minutes after aired with all commercials removed. Will TV networks do this?...NO
- Uzael, on 03/19/2008, -1/+14For those that say it is "crappy" - That is a matter of opinion. Not everyone has the same taste in entertainment. For example, I think broadcasting a pro golf tournament is crappy content, (insert medical drama here) is crappy content in my opinion. That aside, I think the bigger picture here is not what some may like or not like, it's the fact that this is completely free, downloadable content with no strings. Hopefully, the CBC is starting a trend that others will follow.
- jjustice, on 03/19/2008, -0/+12Steve Jobs Releases Ron Paul Obama TV-Show via BitTorrent NSFW!
- dibby1, on 03/19/2008, -0/+12Go CBC! ( I work for them :) )
- lemcoe9, on 03/19/2008, -3/+14FINALLY!! A TV Network recognizes Bittorrent for more than just pirating. (Even though that it what it is almost) :)
- theaceoffire, on 03/19/2008, -0/+11I like the direction this is going.
The more legit, large torrent sites there are, the less legs Comcast has to stand on. - Zippo, on 03/19/2008, -1/+11Canada, ***** yeah!
- musters, on 03/19/2008, -2/+12Now if only the CBC would save jPod from cancellation!!!
www.savejpod.ca - Cam_86, on 03/19/2008, -0/+9Exactly... Even if this is crappy can-con(as opposed to the good can-con, like the mercer report) it still shows bittorrent is a legitimate form of distribution that isn't all about piracy. The bigger the chunk of legal content(like CBC/BBC shows and linux distro's) the harder it'll be for ISP's like Shaw in Canada, and Comcast in America, to screw with the allowed bandwidth. I paid for the 5mb/sec connection, so why is it that when i have utorrent open(downloading at around 10kb/sec) me entire connection drops down to 512k/sec? Cause my ISP assumes I'm in the process of pirating. Id be nice if i was given the benefit of the doubt.
- hellotyler, on 03/19/2008, -0/+9three wonderful words : TRAILER PARK BOYS
- KraftDinner101, on 03/19/2008, -0/+8shhhh, keep it down.
- KraftDinner101, on 03/19/2008, -0/+8People hate commercials so much because they've gotten out of hand. Why do we have to be subjected to 25 minutes of commercials in an hour long show? Trust me, they're making MORE than enough to get by. I wouldn't worry about their profit margins.
- ArchiTech, on 03/19/2008, -0/+8Indeed, I'm sure many Canadians take the CBC for granted. I do in regards to Television content, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy CBC Radio 2.
A national radio-station that plays Classical music by day, Jazz on the drive home, Live Indie shows at Prime-time, and Experimental Electronic/Ambient/Alternative Late night... Every weekday... with no commercials. With some shows accessible streaming in the CBC archives online.
This news regarding BT is what we should expect from CBC.
Oh Canada. - Aeuta, on 03/19/2008, -0/+8Agreed might fit with the "hip/young image" of the show...
- melak, on 03/19/2008, -1/+8Any Canadian remember the lyrics from one of those old Canadian (as in the beer) commercials: "I know this place is where I am, No other place is better than, No matter where I go I am, Proud to be Canadian"
makes me damn proud to be Canadian hearing this. - smacksaw, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7Alright. Laugh and pity me - my ISP in the US is Comcast and in Canada it's Shaw.
Anyway, I think this move might have an ancillary effect on Net Neutrality in Canada. I would say that access to CBC is essentially a right in Canada. I've driven to the outermost reaches of this land and there are repeaters for radio. When there's nothing in range, there's CBC One.
If Shaw or Rogers or Cogeco were to try and block torrents, if they were blocking this, I think they would be violating public access to something the taxpayers paid for. And giving preferential treatment to CBC content would not go over well, because CTV, Global, etc would complain. I almost think an enterprising person could phrase this in a way that guarantees net neutrality.
Also, I think this would be a good argument for repealing the media levy. If people are storing CBC programming, they should not be taxed to do so. That's double-taxation. Canadians have already paid once for CBC content. - marklittle, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7Support legal torrents: http://www.wortharchiving.com
- matthewjhughes, on 03/19/2008, -2/+9I'll download for great justice.
- purplehaze420, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6You are missing the point.
- jezsik, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5Public networks cater to citizens; commercial networks cater to consumers.
- Jexie, on 03/19/2008, -1/+6They are being released ad-free to start with.
- bsmang, on 03/19/2008, -2/+7Why do you care if you make the front page with a submission? Most people pay no attention to who the submitter of a story is anyway. I see the submitter of this one is just a number.. You aspire to be on par with a simple number?
- TheSnuffster, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5Contains the excerpts Scientology didn't want you to see!
- Makaveli604, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5if you live in the west coast, and have a 10MBit connection like I do.. TV shows that air at 9 or ten are ready to go at 725, uploaaded on secondary trackers by 730.
if everyone was in my situation, Tivo WOULD be replaced. - musters, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4jPod rocks! It is such a clever show with a nice techie twist. And it helps that the two chicks are smoking hot.
- smacksaw, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4That is the gist of the federal mandate mentioned in the article there...
- eyreka, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4Intelligence, JPod, ...
- ArchiTech, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4Mmmmmm.... George Stroumboulopoulos
- deathmatch, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4driver too
- smacksaw, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4I'd say it's much better. He's lowered his "smarmy bastard" level to a point where even I like him now. Plus, they're in a groove - sort of like after Jon Stewart had been on The Daily Show for a few months and started to make it his own and drop Craiggers' stuff (even though I loved Kilborn's version).
I think you can watch most CBC shows for free on their website. This just makes it cheaper for them to distribute them. Take a look and see for yourself. - BinaryFragger, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4It's also very annoying when commercials are much louder than the actual TV shows, or when they'res a commercial break when they'res only 5 minutes left in the show.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4I meant to write Canada, my bad.
- Makaveli604, on 03/19/2008, -2/+6why is this dugg up.
it's like:
the sky is blue, and its pretty - artfuldodga, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4A step forward CBC, good job. :D
- scousins, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4I suggest that every person that reads this download the show when it becomes available even if they don't watch it to bump the numbers up so that CBC and other networks see that this is a good idea. This would give them a good reason to try the same method of distribution with a more popular show even if they infuse it with ads this is a good thing.
