Not all Brits would agree on the issue. Some (mostly the oldies) will buy any publication that puts 'Princess Di' on the cover and generally revere the Royals because they do a difficult job with graciousness, patience and dignity.
Others think they are a bunch of freeloading, inbred throwbacks, who treated a young and thoroughly messed up woman in an appalling way, and wish the whole lot of them would retire to Balmoral never to be seen again. Particularly Charles who is unpopular not because of the treatment of his ex-wife, but because he's a total wanker.
I'm with the latter group and I'm not unusual in my views. - biglee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Seriously guys, do really have no brains? Its not about us Brits loving the Monarchy its about 2 young men not wanting to have their mothers last moments being aired on national TV. Put yourself in their position and I'm sure you'll understand.
- 35263526, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I'd take a powerless figurehead monarchy over total destruction of habeas corpus any day of the week.
I guess that makes me a Fascist, eh? - BigFloppy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Wasting tax money is really a void argument when you see how much money they bring to the economy through tourism.
Personally, i don't love them as people, having spent quite some time around some of the more 'minor' ones, but definitely don't have a problem with them as an institution. There's no reason to really, they take virtually nothing of your taxes and preserve our history. I think the UK is already going through a bit of an identity crisis at the moment, and losing them would only worsen the problem. - varunb007, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Need to see the pictures to have any kind of opinion...
- st0nes, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Actually, you were dugg down for illiteracy, bad spelling and cruelty to punctuation marks.
- WilliamDavis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8@ fallenomen
It's wonderful that you're so "repectful of the dead." Perhaps you could learn to be respectful of the living as well. It's not really that hard. - tehtopher, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10There was a British family in line behind my family at a museum in Italy and my mother tried to start a conversation with them:
My mom: "I love the royal family!"
Them: "Oh, the people who waste our tax money?" - fubuvsfitch, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Actually, those little grey men crashed in Roswell. I bet they wish they had landed.
- swavalier711, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I don't really care about Diana, but perhaps that is because I am an American and cannot understand the full impact of her death.
Perhaps? - WilliamDavis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6"1000's gathered around while Charles shock my parents hands and thanked us."
Was he using a joy buzzer or something? - Gadren, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I was going to post the same thing... Could a British citizen explain the relationship they have with the royal family? Is it like the celebrities in America? If so, why should I care about Diana if I don't care about Anna Nicole Smith?
- ToxicBomber, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9ITS ALL A CONSPIRACY!!!
SHE'S STILL ALIVE!!!
....
......
........9/11 was an inside job....little Grey men landed in Roswell....etc, etc, etc....
Yes there will be those who think the pictures are being "suppressed" by someone in the government, I think though most people will still have a hard time looking at pictures of Diana half-dead in a pile of car rubble, regardless of how long ago it was. It's more out of respect for those who looked up to her, than anyone currently alive in the royal family. - plingboot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Honestly, I always thought it was the Americans that were crazy about Diana. I'm British and everyone I know couldn't care less.
- Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5We don't, it's just the crazy right wing media (AKA, the Daily Express) that posts news about her usually at least once a week (no exaggeration) regardless of the fact that she died a decade ago.
- Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5worship? fascist? (look whos talking)
do you even know what a monarchy is, or Britain's system of government?
its not a religion, the monarcy are revered as superhuman beings who require our worship
and I would guess that britain is a lot less fascist then america
and im not british, just not a moron - Visionz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@Toxicbomber
"It's more out of respect for those who looked up to her, than anyone currently alive in the royal family. "
What about her kids? Personally I could care less about Diana, but I dont think I would want pictures of my mother dead in the street, I think it is out of respect for those currently alive that the photos are not shown.
Plus i,m sure people would rather remember how she lived, and not how she and what it looked like after the crash. - TheKricket, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3im an american - and i was fairly young when diana passed - however, i still had a great fondness for her - for me - it was that she was such the "unlikely philanthropist" - here you have a woman who was NOT born to a well-to-do family, yet she marries into one of the most powerful and wealthy families in the known world
she took that as an opportunity not to exclusively purchase new dresses and expensive purses - but to get out there and bring attention to a bunch of issues and charities that werent very well known (the whole land-mine situation comes to mind)
she had a good and empathetic heart - and thats VERY rare when it comes to multi-millionaires - imo - everyone should just leave her alone - honor her and what she stood for rather than attempt to exploit her untimely death - 35263526, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Stop and search _proposals_ don't really compare to the Gitmo and the MCA, though I'm opposed to them all the same. Don't get me wrong, Tony's been on the warpath against civil liberties, but at least the two sane parties managed to knock down terror detention from 90 days to a month.
- CarloLedbetter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2They should show the pictures with the caption "Diana would be alive today if she had worn a seatbelt."
- PixelVision, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Scheissen
Do you understand any of the words you said? - Gremlinclr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@fallenomen
Yea and all Canadians drink maple syrup like water and worship Wayne Gretsky as their god. See how easy it is to stereotype and entire ***** country?
Grow the hell up. Not all Americans are the same you idiot. - rheaume, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3It takes practice, lots of practice
- Sieglove, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Americans, you may have celebrities -- but you don't have to pay for them out of your own pocket, and you can actually punish them for their crimes. That is a luxury.
The British monarchy is the Briton's domestic business, so I won't comment too much on it, but with Diana dead at least the British can save a little tax money. Hopefully the media will relent with the personality cult. There are seriously more troubling problems than some freeloading ass who died in a car crash in 1997. - popothebright, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Freedom of the press: Curtail it for reasons of "taste" and you're on a very, very slippery slope to government controlled media.
Show the pictures. If it offends you, don't look. - directive0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Reality is often very offensive.
- Axios, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I was thinking it's been far too long since I used that nifty little block button. Thank you.
- tearor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If the media can show pics of children killed by landmines, then we should be able to see pics of Di, who was leading a campaign against landmines
- st0nes, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Sure. She's shacked up with Elvis.
- ComputerGuru, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Grow up! Stop spamming!
Wait, that's not going to happen... Hmmmm.... Oh yeah, Digg gives me the solution!
/blocked - slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Channel 4 said in a statement. "We acknowledge there is great public sensitivity surrounding pictures of the victims and these have not been included." ..........Thats not fair.
- ISIfunded911, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2You can watch documentaries, like Canadian public TV CBC's Diana's Death.
It is on emule. There are other documentaries downloadable.
You will learn a lot about the circumstances of her death, and about her.
I never cared about her before, but now I cannot forget that she fought the merchants of death, the military-industrial industry...and the royal family. British aristocrats have spent centuries killing each other. Did they really stop? - runandbecome, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Are the photos of public interest? If yes - how? Diana is dead - nothing is going to change that.
What is shameful in this case is that a plea from her children asking a TV company (no doubt revelling in the publicity) not to show pictures of the last moments of their mother's life on national TV. Will they bring her back? No. Will they provide insight into what the circumstances were around the car crash. Does it matter - no-one can change what happened.
How many of you would want to live through the death of a parent being broadcast around the world - not being able to turn on the TV, radio or look at a newspaper or magazine because their death is being talked about? How would it make you feel to have one of the most personal and private moments of your life turned into international news with newspapers calling you to find out how you feel and do you have anything they can add to their stories?
It has nothing to do with their royalty or their public profile. They are people and have human emotions - perhaps that needs to be remembered.
Those involved at Channel 4 should be utterly ashamed of themselves - dannyboy3020, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6So...where are the pics?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1How is footage of this woman's death any different from all the bodies that get strewn about TV "news" every day?
- Gremlinclr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Really? That's the best you got? Mom jokes?
So Canadians (if we were all to stereotype entire countries like you seem to enjoy doing) are stupid AND unimaginative. Interesting. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2The point is that Diana was not a Royal Family member when she died - she divorced out of it.
- Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Facist? Right now we have less anti-human rights laws than America.
- csrster, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Because you can't have a powerless figurehead monarch _and_ destruction of basic human rights? What about this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6695685.stm ?
- Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3***** Diana Express and Diana Mail.
Edit: Or, at this moment in time, the Diana Mcann. - TetchyTony, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0If you like detective stories, read what the 'real' detectives say:
http://www.met.police.uk/news/operation_paget_report.htm
Warning - big document, but very thorough (and very sad):
Everyone should leave her alone now and let history judge, but no - there will be a hotly disputed 'inquest', which is why this tragedy is still news. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1@st0nes
Really i thought it was my typing errors?
Sorry,I tend to be off key sometimes like that due to the fact your mother is constantly deep throating my enormous membrane on a daily basis, while your father grovels in the corner , like the man bitch he is, wishing he could only please her like i do :)
FYI Pics will be in the mail A.S.A.P for yeah to drown your tears over, before you commit suicide over form the guilt and shame

See how easy that was ......BTW your mother needs a ride home - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1@WilliamDavis
I would if you got off my jock , along with your mother - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1@gremlinclr
What Joke ?
She really needs a ride home can you pick her up or do you want me to call her a cab ?
I don't get where your saying Joke....? Her mouth is tired from being up all night :)
FYI -Roll into Iraq wearing a American flag and someone else wearing a Canadian flag or any war torn country as a matter of fact-and lets guess who's gonna get killed ?
Now thats a Joke in spades - mishsquish, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I think people take stuff like this too close to heart. It was a tragedy, sure. But why must we surround the issue (and similar ones) by a taboo that is not doing the preservation of memories any favors?
If anything, it'll make people remember for longer. - csrster, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Because you can't have a powerless figurehead monarch _and_ destruction of basic human rights? What about this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6695685.stm ?
