- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+141So much for the RIAA/MPAA's claims of rampant movie/music piracy. But I'm sure you all knew that already. I can't find anything worth even downloading, let alone going to the theater to see. And music? I'm listening to stuff that was released 10-500 years ago, I can't find anything new worth downloading.
Anyway, I'm going to go download the latest Dr. Who episode, because the US Sci-Fi channel doesn't want to broadcast it on time.
Oh, and the lack of annoying, blaring ads telling me to buy a new car, or repeatedly asking me if I'm suffering from restless leg syndrome, is another benefit.
Restless leg syndrome is when you want to kick your television because it was showing ads for the past five minutes instead of what you wanted to see.
So I guess, yes, I AM suffering from restless leg syndrome, and I want to kick Chrysler in the nuts! - fLUx1337, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30i dont feel guilty when downloading TV shows on bittorrent...
Because you can get em on cable anyway in the US....
If the makers of TV shows put adverts in the shows, let me download them for free, I would hapily do so......
But until they stop being bastards, and charging £1 per episode, when I can get it on TV for free - I will stick to the non-advert shows on bittorrent... - brstilson, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17"cable costs like 25$ a month these days. virtually everyone has cable."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAA
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
$25 a month? Where I live, basic ANALOG cable is $50.99 a month. - betacmag4u, on 10/11/2007, -7/+21OBKenobi .......your post should go into the Digg hall of fame !
- KnightMareInc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16I dl TV alot more than movies or anything else. Also personally it isnt really stealing.
- Azriel7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14http://www.tvrss.net/ is great for tv shows. I agree with everything OBKenobi said.
- HaMMeReD, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13You do realize your parents pay for that "free" cable.
If you pay cable and download shows, no it's not really stealing tv ALWAYS has the stuff on first and people will still watch it if available/around.
If you don't pay for cable, well then you are officially straightup stealing. There is a reason the companies sell the digital ep's for 1 pound per ep, and that's because they do it to make money, not be a ***** charity dedicated to your entertainment.
Not that I give a ***** what people do, just at least be honest to yourself about what you are doing. - chrislerch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10It's a lot easier now that the networks are streaming shows. I haven't had to BT a show in months.
- Daniel591992, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11That was interesting...to say the least.
- staffrocket, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10it's sharing
- Animal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Get Peerguardian.
- MrSidnet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I would say very reliable. I mean, I see tv shows with 10 000+ seeders. That's just for one torrent (not including the dups). And that's every week.
I have about 4 or 5 tv shows I download each week, but I dont think i download 5 movies a week. I dont think Im alone here. - tmyprod, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Yea, I really doubt the porn stat. It has to be higher.
Though I do use torrents for TV shows, I don't own a TV. But it still sometimes takes so damn long I just go to alloftv.net or something like it. The a/v quality sucks but at least I can watch it right now. - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10if you're using os x and primarily download tv shows via bit torrent, i highly suggest you look into:
http://tvshows.sourceforge.net/
it allows you to "subscribe" to the shows you want to download, it creates a daemon, you shut down the application and the program automatically fires up your default bit torrent client whenever a new tv torrent becomes available via tvrss. - Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"If you don't pay for cable, then I would say that downloading cable shows is stealing."
hmm, pay for cable hey.
how much would it cost to get them to run my a line to Australia?
most of the time my only option to watch the shows I want is to download them because they dont air here - trogdor282, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Wait, shouldn't the share ratio _average_ always be 1? I mean for someone to download it, someone had to upload it right?
- moo113, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@uofmpike Well it's from torrentfreak so I would assume that it's based on their stats and their affiliates.
- stoikiometry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It's not stealing if you pay for cable and have the ability to watch the episode at one point or another. It's bandwidth-consuming timeshifting.

cable costs like 25$ a month these days. virtually everyone has cable.
'what about pay channel shows?'
any pay channel exclusive show will be rerun to death on on a cable channel soon enuff. the ones that can't due to language, can usually be viewed online thru the channels homepage.
BitTorrent for TV shows has become my #1 use for BT these days. yes, i have cable. i also use a Vista MCE box to record all my shows. however, there's times (alot of times it seems) that the power goes out, something bumps a broadcast at the last minute, some sports event ran over and caused the last 10 minutes of a show to not record, or maybe bush just wants to ramble his nonsense even more overlapping several recordings. whatever the reason, i typically download at least 15% of my weekly TV shows.
even if i didn't have cable, i'd still download 'em. 99% of what i watch (download) is off of free channels anyways (CBS/ABC/NBC/Fox/etc). - Racerx52, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6The hell is it with anime?
Why do people love it so much? I never caught on - foolfromhell, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7http://tvtorrents.com
made by one of the main devs behind Azureus... - Kronos6948, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@ignathius:
Where do you live where cable is only $25 a month? If I paid that to my local cable company, they'd only supply me with my local channels (ones that you can get through an antenna). Regular cable here is over $50 a month, and forget it if you want digital...it's between $75-80 a month. When I first got cable, there was a deal where you paid a small amount for the first 6 months...through some social engineering, I was able to do it for about a year and a half. Then I think they got wise, because they didn't offer an argument when I told them I was going to cancel again, nor did they talk about any specials. So, needless to say, I've been without cable for like 2 years now.
Funny thing is, I BT shows like 24 and Heroes, since I don't have a reliable way to record them while I'm at work. - Netrilix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well, downloading from BitTorrent will be illegal even if you have cable, because while you're downloading, you're also uploading to people who do not have cable. I got a DMCA notice regarding House, which I found hilarious since I own both sets of Season DVDs that are out, and I DVR it every time it's on. I missed ONE SHOW and they called me on it. But, like I said, I think it's more the fact that while I was downloading it, I was also uploading it to people who might not pay a cable bill.
P.S. I got the DMCA notice through Comcast. - CAD420, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4hmm....anyone see the /. posting --> BitTorrent Pirate Loses His Last Appeal http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/117847939/article.pl
- ph30nix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Comcast sent me a copyright infringement notice for downloading tv shows... i haven't downloaded on my home network in nearly a month.
- Barryke, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5No, share ratio is calculated per person/client, and per torrent.
One's ratio for a given torrent will only reach 1 once she/he uploaded as much as she/he downloaded. - h4mx0r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Catching up with Battlestar Galactica's third season, watching Stargate episodes before they air in the US, and other enjoyable shows...
I can see why. - bigpete591, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3What have you seen? There are a lot of types of anime. It's possible you just haven't seen the right one.
- M2Ys4U, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I agree, EZTV have never let me down
- Durrok, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I would also highly recommend Death Note (only subbed atm but still worth it). That is one of the best animes I have seen in a long time. I would also recommend Cowboy Bebop.
I hear they also plan on releasing the English version of Death Note on DVD the same time as they release it in Japan, but that could always change. - HsoKinees, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i heard that HBO is sending out tonnes of letters to people downloading Sopranos(lots of comments about that on Demonoid)..
I also heard that PeerGuardian doesn't work at all.. i use ipfilters, i doubt that works, but meh - Barryke, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i never caught on too.
So, is there some other kind of anime that doesn't involve recycling frames for over 1 second, and only moving lips and eyes?
That's what i hate about anime a LOT.
Anime movies like Metropolis and Ghost In The Shell i like.
They look more like 24frames/second manga with lighting and shading. Much better.
(as a matter of fact, so does the new simpsons movie, shading ftw!) - staffrocket, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What? That's creepy that they can do that..
- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Bitch is so blocked, oh maaan, my heart can't take it.
- CAD420, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1cool..thanks...looks like a good place..and nicely organized.
- maexus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1***** yea. It's my own "dvr". Though, I do buy the dvds, I just love downloading an entire season as well as setting up my client to download the newest episodes automatically. Coming home to my favorite shows
- scottykempf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So if I only download shows on the big networks that are broadcast over the air, then am I safe? Think about it. The networks BROADCAST their shows, sending them out FOR FREE into the air all over the country. How can they claim that I am stealing if they are giving it away for free?
- Azriel7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I don't think its stealing when you consider the gazillion ads every 5 minutes, along with the obvious placement products in the show which I can't stand since it turns the show into a GIANT AD! This is on top of paying a satalite/cable bill!!!!
- nshex1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This big deal about copyright is only to show the super-lameness of mpaa and the likes.
they behave this way not because of income loss, but because they now see that they
are losing control over the content itself. this is the same as it was in the 15th century,
when books were all owned by the church, and copied by hand by monks.
as soon as the printing pres was invented they started accusing it of being of devils
design and so on. then you had to have a license for printing and eventually, the stupid
catholics lost and we all have hp and cannons...
it is just a matter of time until mpaa understands they have to find a better business model,
or even just copy itunes model. - flxfxp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1aaaaaaaand blocked!
- giveen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I live on a military base, and the only way to get a good signal for free locally broadcasted channels is to have cable tv.
So i download my shows. Its about the only think I download. need to get my "Lost", "24" fix.
The "AA"'s will try to spin it as stealing someones IP, but legally you are allowed to record publicly broadcasted tv shows.
After all...isnt a TiVo just a computer? Dang straight it is. - Barryke, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1"What If" machines are great. Mine is broken. :( Stupid finger enlonger...

- tomwhughes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1http://sharetv.org/ BRILLIANT site for tv torrrent downloads! Great layout and very reliable torrent sources! I use it all the time.
Torrent TV rocks by the way. I hardly ever watch normal TV any more - esotericguy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4up to $80????
i suggest you move. - funkydopeloven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0tv shows/anime come out weekly whereas after 4 years of downloading its hard to find a movie worth downloading that i don't have or already seen unless its fresh on dvd or been in theaters for like a month for a decent viewing
- Zorn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This is simply market-forces calling for a new distribution system, and indeed, fair pricing for media (people will pay, after all—look at the success of iTunes). Certainly, we are putting the 'free' into free-market. But I would regard this period as transitional. What is required is smart people to devise to a new and fair copyright system, new legal norms, and again, a new distribution system. At the same time, we are seeing more and more 'user-created content'. When 'ordinary people' are making media with 'commercial' quality (or with creative, artistic value, just like the origin of cinema and popular music in general) and with off the shelf technology, then indeed the culture has shifted from the demands and constraints of corporate media to the creativity of the population as such. Come the day when corporate media is a footnote in the history of human creativity.
