- WordsnCollision, on 06/12/2009, -3/+642Billy Mays expected to lobby. Loudly.
- cosworth99, on 06/11/2009, -10/+420It's about time. With my desire to have a nice 5.1 signal emanating from my PVR and then to my amp, the drawback of super loud ADs is almost not worth it.
This should be sooner rather than later. - EnTaroTassadar, on 06/12/2009, -2/+338There's a difference between the pitchmen shouting in their commercials, and the VOLUME of the commercials. It really sucks when you're watching a movie and you've got the volume up really loud so you can hear the characters whispering very important parts of the plot, and they cut to commercial and you're blasted with "FROM THE MAKERS OF *****!"
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -3/+338HI, BILLY MAYS HERE. IF YOU VOTE FOR THIS BILL IN THE NEXT 10 MINUTES I WILL DOUBLE YOUR OFFER. THAT'S 2 ASS-KICKINGS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE.
- presidentraygun, on 06/12/2009, -1/+217I remember you could buy a tv back in the day that would automatically mute an commercial that cranked the decibels. The Ad industry fought it claiming it violated freedom of speech.
- memper, on 06/12/2009, -0/+196I want adblock+ for my tv.
- JK1150, on 06/12/2009, -13/+181While they are at it, they should ban sirens and horn honking on the radio.
- MattB123, on 06/12/2009, -8/+169I support this.
- Hearron, on 06/11/2009, -16/+158Sad congress has to waste their time and money on this, lets just hope they don't screw it up.
- CivicTV, on 08/14/2009, -2/+135BUT WAIT THERES MORE!
- dumass4u, on 06/12/2009, -4/+135Thanks Bill!
- jmuh, on 06/12/2009, -0/+121We used to have a big old TV that wouldn't mute commercials, but it would keep the volume the same as whatever program you were watching.
I think it's totally obnoxious and laughable that the networks and advertisers are all up in arms about DVRs and time shifting, etc. But it's like they do everything possible to annoy the living ***** out of their target audiences.
Insist on blasting the volume in your ads? Well, hitting the Mute button is more convenient than constantly upping and and downing the volume. So I hope you don't have anything particularly persuasive you hope for me to being hearing about. - EnTaroTassadar, on 06/12/2009, -0/+88I'd love to have one of these.
- ATH025, on 06/12/2009, -3/+89Try our new EXTRA BIG-ASS TACO
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -12/+98We don't need a law, what we need is a scientific study. I'm almost positive that I could demonstrate a relationship between the obnoxiousness of commercials and the amount of TV viewed. I routinely find myself turning off the TV or the radio after a particularly idiotic commercial. I think if advertisers were made aware of this, they'd tone that ***** the ***** down.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -1/+83I can't tell you how many times I was looking around for an emergency vehicle when the sound was really from the radio....
- dagnabbit, on 06/12/2009, -4/+78Don't know about you, but here in Minnesota I say hell yes. I'm sick of BILLY MAYS HERE WITH MIGHTY PUTTY being 3x louder than the show I was just watching.
- MariusVT, on 06/12/2009, -2/+62I have a 27" magnavox TV that I've had since the late 90's that has a built in "smart-sound" feature that keeps everything at the same volume level. I just use it in the room I workout in now, but damn that feature alone makes it probably one of the best tv's Ive ever owned.
I don't know if Magnavox still uses it or not. - inactive, on 06/12/2009, -7/+61In CERTAIN AREAS of the united STATES the volume can BE VERY annoying, so setting a volume STANDARD that the rest of the country CAN ABIDE BY not only makes sense but easily enforceable with the army OF SENIOR CITIZENS making sure the SOUND LEVELS arent ***** with their hearing aids. Have you not experienced this problem in AUDIO STANDARDS for ads?
- fluidfoundation, on 06/12/2009, -5/+54I guess you don't have the WACKY WAVING INFLATEABLE ARM FLAILING TUBE MAN! WACKY WAVING INFLATEABLE ARM FLAILING TUBE MAN!
- IKORKYI, on 06/12/2009, -1/+48DOES THIS MEAN BILLY MAYS ISN'T ALLOWED ON TV ANYMORE?
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -4/+51If you had the reflexes of a bionic cat, yeah, why not hit that button. But the problem is, the ads come at your randomly, some are fine, others are way too loud and you always end up getting hit with 3-4 seconds of this before you can hit mute.
- sodoh, on 06/12/2009, -2/+47Actually it was the high volume adverts which stopped me watching TV altogether. Now can't stand the thing it is so annoying.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -1/+46C-SPAN is one of the last channels they would force you to watch because its raw, unedited and has very little commentary so its hard to inject talking points or propaganda.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -1/+44Cool story, Cabose.
- darknecross, on 06/12/2009, -0/+42Expanding on that, I just hate the shows/movies that jump from whispers to incredibly loud explosions, especially since I do most of my TV watching at night when people in the house are trying to sleep.
The biggest culprit I've found so far was when I watched "The Dresden Files" on Hulu. - cosworth99, on 06/12/2009, -5/+44For watching live TV in HD. Duh. Can't fast forward through live tv man. Think before posting.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -4/+41I think Congress needs to declare a national "you'll love my nuts" day
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -0/+37No I think he means they're literally stuck in 2001. Firefox wasn't around yet.
- DirtyVicar, on 06/12/2009, -2/+39It would be nice if super-loud commercials alienated their viewers and resulted in lower sales, but no...... people have to be stupid and go buy the *****, just the same way that the same stupid people read each Viagra spam and go click the link, resulting in more of it. This is a bill that shouldn't even be necessary in the first place.
- MattB123, on 06/12/2009, -5/+40***** yes it does.
- Cabose, on 06/12/2009, -3/+37I just played that out like 5 times using my hands just like him. I'm in a cube farm. I didn't realize I wasn't alone until the 3rd time.
- fendereff, on 06/12/2009, -3/+36Big ass-taco...gross...
- SkippyDoorknob, on 06/12/2009, -0/+33The worst cases are the local ads injected by the local cable company - they just can't seem to match the base volume label with the main show. The ads that are in the network feed are not as bad.
- jakobrowning, on 06/12/2009, -1/+31Who's this Bill guy and why is he always up in our business?
- thenoxx, on 06/12/2009, -2/+32Advertisers don't give a damn if the ads are obnoxious, loud, irritating or repetitive. They don't care if you get pissed off at them, as long as the ad sticks in your brain. They've done plenty of studies that show obnoxious ads sell just as much product as nice ones. Just look at the makers of HEAD-ON APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD HEAD-ON APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD HEAD-ON APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD HEAD-ON APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD.
- V3n0M, on 06/12/2009, -9/+38(what a great use of caps!!!!!)
- kemper86, on 06/12/2009, -2/+31HIIIII, BILLY MAYS HERE FOR MIGHTY PUTTY!!! THE EASY WAY TO FIX, FILL AND SEAL VIRTUALLY ANYTHING FAST AND MAKE IT LAST!
- TheMidnight, on 06/12/2009, -1/+30OXYCLEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- alexforcefive, on 06/12/2009, -1/+30Ok, let me turn this around: Why are you complaining about the government stepping in to provide a better service for consumers when the market has clearly failed to do so? I don't think it's going to destroy competition to specify a dB range for adverts, do you?
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -1/+30They should, because I boycott products whose commercials piss me off. I hear the name of the product, and all I'll be thinking about is how much their commercial annoyed me. Is that what they want? Yeah, it increases awareness, but it seems kind of pointless.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -1/+30ITS AMAZING!!! PUT IT ON BREAD FOR A HEALTY SNACK THE KIDS CAN ENJOY!!!
CRACK IN YOUR ASS? SEAL THAT ***** UP WITH MIGHTY PUTTY!!!!
BROKEN DREAMS??? MIGHTY PUTTY!!! - defectDS, on 06/12/2009, -0/+28*****'N GREEN TO WHITE TECHNOLOGY!
- GiggleStick, on 06/12/2009, -4/+32I wish they would quit putting those voices in the radio that tell me to hurt myself. What the hell does that have to do with buying a car anyway? It is weird that they picked my name to call out too, out of all the names they could have picked. Crazy advertisers.
- MtheoryX, on 06/12/2009, -2/+29Dugg for *****
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -0/+26I just hate when the commercials are wayyy louder than the programs themselves. Its ***** annoying.
- hasahugedig, on 06/12/2009, -3/+28I support this too. I hate it when the commercials are so much louder than the TV show that you're watching. It makes me turn the volume down when a commercial comes on and turn it back up when the show resumes. So annoying. Why didn't they implement this from the get go?
- MEatRHIT, on 06/12/2009, -0/+25If you have a decent receiver see if it has a "night cinema" or similar mode. It will usually tone down the dynamics of the movie pretty well.
- minorthreat, on 06/12/2009, -0/+24was 2003 the last time you turned on your TV?
- nicc, on 06/12/2009, -0/+23luckily, often the threat of legislation is all that is needed to rectify a situation.
as the article states, the senate is not going to (re)introduce their bill unless the broadcasters dont come up with something themselves. -
