- JoeMondo, on 06/14/2009, -16/+775Holding someone accountable, and giving constructive criticism isn't "turning on" anyone.
People have to get over the idea that you need to support your guy in everything or its a betrayal. - missjb, on 06/14/2009, -22/+487I like the idea that somebody like Bill Maher can be a bit critical of Obama. His health care reform is nowhere in sight. Maher's always saying we should question authority no matter what so at least he's practicing what he preaches
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -22/+351"I get it, you love being on TV" I love my bong but I take it out of my mouth every once in a while"
Regardless of whether you agree or not, it was funny. - christoast, on 06/14/2009, -12/+157Its nice to hear something like this for a change. Always be questioning, worshiping personalities is retarded and everyone does it.
- Stryder81, on 06/14/2009, -12/+123It's good to see Bill becoming more ( here's the irony ) open minded to issues.
It's good to see him holding Obama accountable to things. And those trying to knock him for it or saying " wow, he finally did something I agree on " you should watch him a little more often.
In the previous show, he had the head of the C.F.R. on and asked him flat out " Why do we need to be all around the world " the C.F.R. guy couldn't give a straight answer and Maher knew he's full of sh*t and let it go.
Before that show, he was being critical of Israel and their policies. So Maher isn't being just another "Leftist" or "Liberal", atleast not recently.
Regardless of all of that, he has a good show. He has all sides on and even though I might not agree with everything, you can tell when a person genuinely doesn't know something or is a "staunch" person of partisan ship like O'Reilly & Limbaugh are. - jessemoya, on 06/14/2009, -9/+106"I'm glad Obama is president, but the audacity of hope part is over. Right now I'm hoping for a little more audacity."
- Bamshackle, on 06/14/2009, -15/+104Like him or not he is correct about Obama. Our president needs to bring us the change he spoke about during the campaign. I am a conservative but I want this country to succeed. I think we have a chance if Obama will use his office to do something, anything other than get on E news and on the cover of People magazine. What happened to bringing both parties together, what happened to recovery.gov? DO SOMETHING ALREADY!
- r0g3r, on 06/14/2009, -1/+78Exactly. Bill still agrees with Obama's ideas, he just thinks Obama is too worried about public image to really push those ideas through. Sounds like a valid criticism to me.
- sunburner, on 06/14/2009, -54/+125Believe in ideas, not people. Otherwise the Obamatrons will just be as prime of an example of herd mentality as the neocons (and trust me, they still are).
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -22/+92No self respecting libertarian would support and vote for Obama. There seems to be some confusion on the internet that everyone that smokes pot must be a libertarian.
- matrixbandit, on 06/14/2009, -11/+70I don't agree with everything Bill Maher said, nor do I agree with everything Obama is doing, but THAT I think is the single most important difference from the Bush years..
Obama's strongest supporters like myself are ALSO very critical of him. Once Bush was in office, his supporters sat completely silent until it was way too late. I don't plan on ever sitting down, and I'm going to continue to critically disagree with the President I support when I see fit to do so, because in my mind THAT is how we the people maintain our hand in government. Unlike the Bush supporters from years past, I believe our responsibilities don't end once we've cast our vote, they've only begun.
/diatribe - inactive, on 06/14/2009, -25/+78"He has done more than any president in the history of america "
God, you people really are delusional, aren't you?. - Pottersquash, on 06/14/2009, -20/+67oh no!! Liberals arent monothilitic!!! what a shocking development!!! nooooooooooo
- Misinformant, on 06/14/2009, -2/+47He took what I was gunna say.
- LemonMachete, on 06/14/2009, -25/+67Nobody ever called Obama the ***** messiah except for tools like you who have this irrational hatred for him. It's just some lame attempt to put down people who actually have some trust in the guy because he's intelligent, young, educated, and not another bible-whoring idiot like Bush. Get over it.
- ileftfark, on 06/14/2009, -6/+45ORLY?
http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/grouchocigar.asp - junskey, on 06/14/2009, -8/+47CAN WE PLEASE STOP NAME CALLING YOU ***** CHILDREN: "conservative/liberal WHO GIVES A ***** their all funded by the same special interest groups. no two parties can equally represent a nation of 300 million people. We need to rise above the ***** and have intelligent discussions about politics instead of acting like kindergardeners
- JoeMondo, on 06/14/2009, -9/+41I feel Obama was the best choice available, and even at his worst he's many times the superior of the challenger team at its best.
I don't expect him to fulfill my dreams, and I even expect there are times when he will seriously disappoint me and I'll say so when he does, just as I'll say so when I think he does well.
I want him to succeed, and I support him in general even if I disagree on some particulars. - kanojo1969, on 06/14/2009, -2/+31This is the point I want republicans to focus on. What the video shows is an Obama supporter criticising Obama.
In the republican world, an event like this is followed in a couple of days by Maher publically apologising to Obama like a sniveling dog; i.e. What happens when someone criticises Rush Limbaugh.
Conservatives, take note; this isn't going to happen. We don't have to support our guy no matter what. This is what healthy dissent looks like. If the republicans can figure out how this works and start doing it themselves, there's a tiny glimmer of hope that they can return to some relevancy. Otherwise, no.
personally, I think Maher is on the wrong track with the TV stuff and lack of movement on healthcare. I don't care how often he's on TV, that's generally good to see a more human president. And healthcare is coming; Obama obviously has a strategy and one thing I've learned about him is that he plays his cards very close to his chest and will not make a single move until he's got the whole play set up perfectly.
But I do think Obama deserves some brickbats, mostly regarding the reluctance to pursue the torture issues, his continued support for no-trial imprisonment, and the way the bailouts have been managed, which is looking more and more like outright robbery.
but either way, the conservatives reading this need to understand that there's nothing wrong with pointing out some flaws in a president you voted for. It's constructive. Blindly supporting Obama no matter what is extremely unhealthy, and yes there are democrats who do that, but not the way the republican party supporters do. You guys need to get people in leadership who support this kind of internal criticism, otherwise you might never see another republican president.
I am glad Obama is president right now, though. When Iran may well have a revolution, it's good to have a president who isn't blindly following Israel's orders. - Totalchaos02, on 06/14/2009, -15/+43I don't get how Maher can say week after week that Obama's health care reform was a sham (he has said this three weeks in a row now) when bills are only now being introduced in Congress. These things don't happen over night and there is clear movement on Health Care reform. How far into the ground does you head have to be to not realize this?
- MacHarborGuy, on 06/14/2009, -13/+41he has been president for about 1/8th of his first term. Sorry, but when you are running to be PRESIDENT of a nation, you need to be ready to be on the ball DAY ONE.
When are we supposed to stop "giving him the benefit of the doubt" or stop "giving him a chance"? when 1/4th of his term is up, half of his term? After the whole 4 years?
sounds like Obama supporters are trying to use the "Bush didn't know about the WTC plot, after all, he'd only been President for about a year" defense. Not the same situation, but feels like the same style of flip-flopping. - metaliq, on 06/14/2009, -10/+37At least we don't have a Palin.
- Totalchaos02, on 06/14/2009, -10/+37I am fairly sure he meant in the first 100 days, it's pretty obvious based on the context. Furthermore, there is significant proof that Obama has had the most ambitious and successful 100 days since at least FDR when the 100 Days test became relevant.
- clemenza, on 06/14/2009, -27/+54Can we get some perspective here please? Obama has been in office like what, not even 5 months?
Agreed he is overexposed but let's wait and see what kind of health care reform bill gets to his desk before we declare it a failure. - Protonz, on 06/14/2009, -9/+35He isn't one. It's in style to say libertarian instead of 'independent' for some reason.
A libertarian doesn't want the government to fix healthcare by getting more involved with it. - JoeMondo, on 06/14/2009, -3/+28"you do realize there was more than 2 options?"
Rephrase: He was the best viable choice. - apathetique, on 06/14/2009, -9/+34If your dumbass was a Bush, you too could get into one of the most prestigious schools in the world with the help of daddy.
- MacHarborGuy, on 06/14/2009, -5/+30people turning on people, been happening forever, welcome to Earth
- HappyScrappy, on 06/14/2009, -5/+28Eh, it's a rather old joke.
http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/grouchocigar.asp - BullBearMS, on 06/14/2009, -6/+28Obama's health care plan is a sham because they never even considered the option of a single payer system. That would have been unacceptable to the rich and powerful people who control things like the insurance business (where they just love to retroactively cancel the little guy's insurance if you get an expensive to treat illness) or the pharmaceutical industry (which doesn't want to develop new antibiotics to combat new strains of resistant bacteria because they aren't as profitable as pills you have to take every day for things like 'restless leg syndrome').
- superkendall, on 06/15/2009, -6/+25"Obama passed the largest economic stimulus bill in the history of america."
Epic fail from the outset. The bill did nothing to create more than a handful of jobs, and in a few years we are going to have inflation you will not believe.
"He ordered the closing of Guantanamo"
He said he'd like to close it knowing that there's no way to do so, since we'd already asked other countries to take some of the prisioners we have and they said no.
It's this kind of totally wilful ignorance comparing to what Obama says vs. what he does that led so many people like yourself to vote for him. Not one single thing Obama has done has been a surprise to me, outspending Bush and carrying on all of the policies people claimed to hate are just a few things that were obvious from how Oabma actually behaved vs. what he said. - overtoke, on 06/14/2009, -2/+20his first show was cancelled because he told the truth, moron
- ownt790, on 06/14/2009, -42/+60Obama passed the largest economic stimulus bill in the history of america. He ordered the closing of Guantanamo. He set a timetable for troop withdrawal in Iraq. He lifted restrictions on stem cell research. He even expanded child health insurance. All this happened in less than 100 days. He has done more than any president in the history of america and certainly more than any republican would ever do.
I gotta say, Bill Maher was pretty funny in that, but come on. Give the man some credit. - davidkinca, on 06/14/2009, -1/+18In one of his standup acts that are on DVD, he said "I'm a libertarian" then within the next minute he suggests that the 2nd amendment be dropped.
- MrZaiko, on 06/14/2009, -3/+20He is not against Obama, (and definitely not trying to win Republican viewers)
Its just his opinion, he pretty much said: We love you, you got our votes, now lets get to the real business!
Those really big issues like health care the people are waiting for at least a start on the matter. - hatdrop, on 06/15/2009, -2/+19the only ones calling him jesus were the people on the right. either way, at least us on the left are able to call out "our own" rather than blindly support someone because they're on our "side."
as for me i never voted for obama, as much as i appreciated that he's much more intelligent than the fearless "leader" that was bush, there were other candidates i liked better than him. he's doing a lot better than mccain would be doing, but i never vote for the lesser of two evils. - elnerdo, on 06/14/2009, -9/+26The point of what yojiffyskippy said is that a lot of people call themselves 'libertarians' but don't really know what it means.
BullBearM$, if you voted for Obama, you may wish to reconsider calling yourself a 'libertarian'. Look at what libertarianism actually stands for, and then reconsider. Chances are that you are not actually a libertarian.
Doobie, you're a troll, so I'll just ignore you. - oceandead, on 06/15/2009, -1/+17There is a major difference in considering yourself a libertarian, and considering yourself someone who would be part of the Libertarian Party (Libertarian with a capital L?).
Libertarianism is general term that encompasses a wide spectrum of political philosophies from anarcho-socialism to anarcho-capitalism and everything between.
In the past, the Democratic and Republican parties would both have been considered "libertarian" in the broad sense, though it is now debatable whether or not these parties actually fall on the libertarian or populist side of the nolan chart. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3e ...
The Libertarian *Party* philosophy, however, is just one small slice of the broad spectrum of philosophies encompassed by libertarianism and by no means represents the entire spectrum of libertarian thought/philosophy. - groo68, on 06/14/2009, -0/+16It may be a way for him to make money, but it's an honest buck. He told the truth, and asked for more. When talking about the president it doesn't come down to simple manners and holding your tongue. Every criticism is relevant and the character Obama has created, real or false, would listen to every criticism. so unless Obama is a false character i would hope that he would at least consider Maher's words and better himself by them, in turn bettering the country.
- BullBearMS, on 06/15/2009, -2/+18Being libertarian isn't like being Catholic. You don't always have to agree with the dogma of the Libertarian Party under threat of excommunication.
If you think that people should be allowed to make their own choices about how to live their life as long as they aren't hurting others, then you're well on your way to being libertarian.
Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate, was a recent convert from the Republican Party. In fact, he was a much too recent convert. People who change their views just in time to run for high office have never seemed trustworthy to me. Ditto for Mitt Romney on the Republican side. His views certainly changed quite a bit just in time for the primary season.
Candidate Obama's often repeated promise to take our government back from the special interests and keep them out of our Executive Branch was the thing that won me over. Unfortunately, President Obama is sold out to Wall Street, Big Insurance, Pharmaceuticals... You name it. The wealthy and special interests are still in control.
I sure wish that Candidate Obama guy was our President. He was going to end the war, shut down our political prisons, stand up for civil liberties, grant equal protection under the laws for gays. He was a neat guy. - UTKEngineer, on 06/14/2009, -22/+37I just dugg, and heartily agreed with, Bill Maher.
I think I'm gonna be sick... - LemonMachete, on 06/14/2009, -5/+20Let me clarify. It has become common for people who dislike Obama too mock his supporters by saying that they thought of him as a messiah. I am merely pointing out the fact that none of his supporters ever thought that, and they simply like him as a politician because he is intelligent, charismatic, etc. and that the only people who ever used the word messiah to describe him where in fact those who dislike Obama. This argument works quite well for the uneducated and closed minded because rather than addressing his policies or decisions rationally, they can simply sardonically insult his supporters by implying that they like Obama for irrelevant reasons. The fact that I have to explain this shows how ***** retarded a lot of people are (see TypicalDiggeral) and makes me feel dirty all over.
- clankster, on 06/14/2009, -4/+18I don't see the two as being mutually exclusive. Of course you believe in ideas, but in the end you vote for people (in politics, business, and generally in life), and their ability to stand for/implement those ideas.
Also, dugg down for your willingness to repeat idiotic catch phrases like "Obamatrons." - iletumi, on 06/14/2009, -4/+18I think you need to change your name to Alanoclu
- randyzaia, on 06/14/2009, -2/+16Conservative or liberal, you had to see this coming a mile away.
- dOOBiEx213, on 06/14/2009, -7/+20If you were paying attention, you'd understand the only options considered now are not exactly the "change" we voted for. How far into the ground does you head have to be to not realize this?
- JoeMondo, on 06/14/2009, -1/+14"voting for no-one is a viable choice"
In my opinion that was a far lesser choice than voting for Obama. So much lesser that for all practical purposes it was not viable for *my* vote.
I was happy to cast my vote for Obama, though not as happy as I might have been for some dream candidate who was not present. - inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+13do you know what irony is?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/14/2009, -4/+17Define "you people"
- LloydDobbler, on 06/14/2009, -3/+16I'm still finding it laughable that Bill Maher considers himself a Libertarian.
By that logic, I'm guessing Ralph Nader is a Republican. -
