- guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Maybe they'll succeed in finding Earth, and realize the most we've advanced is identifying Coca-Cola's secret recipe. Not much help against the Cylons.
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20@danielsimon
I wouldn't classify Baltar as a villain. The humans are villainizing him, but in terms of the storyline, he's not quite on the extreme of either end of the good-evil spectrum. Very few characters in the show are.
Yeah, season 3 was a little tamer than the previous seasons. My rationalization has been that they are making an attempt at building further character relationships and histories that will further serve story purposes in the future. Of course, that could just be a cop-out for them trying to pull off a sci-fi epic on a not-so-epic budget. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I guess I'm one of the few people left that still thinks this is an awesome show?
Look, as far as I'm concerned, BSG hit bottom at the beginning of Season 2. You remember, the episodes where Adama wasn't around and everything was run by Tigh? I didn't like the stories they told, I thought they were predictable and outright boring. The show needed Edward James Olmos, and they totally took him out of nearly a dozen episodes, thus taking away the charm of the show.
As for this season? I don't know, but I still find it fantastic. The thing I always loved about BSG is that it's basically a show that masquerades as an indy film. The directors they hire consistently make it look like something from the Sundance Film Festival. This is actually the first show I have EVER watched where I await in eager anticipation during the start of the episode to see the Director credit. This is the first time I actually know the names of the Directors and actually get excited when I see familiar names. That says a lot about this show.
So, taking the indy film approach, they've basically expanded on that idea this season, and I enjoy that tremendously. I actually LOVE the character moments on the show. Yes, it often got annoying when they kept going back to the love triangle with Starbuck, but my favorite moment this season still managed to be the one during that flashback to New Caprica when Starbuck and Apollo were screaming out their love for each other, and then show in the next scene that Starbuck betrayed him. I thought that was powerful and wonderful, and as emotional as a television show on the Sci-Fi Channel will likely ever get.
And for all the people whining that this show doesn't have much action this season... honestly, how many space dogfights can you take before they all start feeling old? I don't care that there aren't that many explosions this season. I don't care that we don't see as many shootouts in rainy forests any more. You know why I don't care? It's not because I don't like action. It's because we've had plenty of this stuff before. Now we're onto bigger and more important things. The lack of action lately can easily be explained by the fact that the writers are purposefully turning these episodes into the "calm before the storm". You constantly hear references to the fact that Cylons seem to have forgotten them, only to be reminded that they're still around waiting to strike (like last week). You'll get your action. And it'll feel that much more exciting because of these smaller build-up episodes.
Anyway, that's how I feel. Now if you want to see a show that has truly lost its way, look no further than Lost. Now THAT was a case of the writers totally betraying their fanbase by giving them more of the ***** they hated to begin with, and less of the stuff they loved. BSG is different. BSG is expanding on their original premise of a science fiction character drama. If you don't like this, why did you even start watching this show in the first place? You'd be better off with the original and far-inferior iteration from the 70s. - thedobber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17
Why the Digg down? Even the most ardent fan (among which I count myself) has to admit that this season has fallen short of the mark set by the two prior seasons.
Silly episodes that did nothing to move the story along, random story arcs to nowhere. Starbuck suddenly realizing she has a destiny. The chief and his whiny wife stuck in the elevator, err the air-lock.
I hope the season finale on Sunday doesn't have the equivalent of "Bobby Ewing in the Shower, it was all a dream sweetie" and have Starbuck reappear. - AlfaWolph, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Baltar is awesome and by far my favorite character on the show. If anything, President Roslin is the most annoying character- if not the real villian. I wish Adama would declare martial law again and jettison her already.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13yeah, especially considering that 22 episodes is standard for pretty much every show [/sarcasm]
- jdroth, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16My wife and I have been watching Battlestar via iTunes for the past couple months. We're in the middle of the third season. She loves it, which is amazing. She's okay with sci-fi, but thinks most of it is sexist. She thinks the women on this show kick ass. I'm glad there'll be a full season four, because that's something we can watch together. Now if only they'd kill off Baltar...
- EbowUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@ ecowarrior
IMHO, it's as good as Firefly.
What people seem to be forgetting is Firefly was elevated to "cult" and "clasic" because there were only what, 11 shows before it was cancelled?
I think there would be a fair amount of "it's gone downhill" for Firefly too if it had ran on into many seasons.
BSG has settled nicely into being good regular viewing. It has good episodes, and bad episodes, as every TV series that runs for seasons does. But the premise is good, the acting is often excellent (when the script is excellent), and every once in a while it has a jaw-dropping moment that makes sticking with it worthwhile (the Adama Manuever in the atmosphere of New Caprica, for example).
Be assured it is *not* Lost. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They should end it now, put us out of our misery.
From the great mini-series that started this show, we were given season 3, the most boring, over dramatized load of crap I have ever witnessed in my life.
I guess BSG sucking made watching Rome on HBO right afterwards an even better experience, now thats an awesome show. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I've enjoyed the stand alone soap opera type episodes of the latter half of season 3, but enough is enough. They should get back to the story arch.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I hope it does. Starbuck's "destiny" better be something better than flying into a storm and dying.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Agreed. They should have let the rebellion on New Caprica play out. They could have filled half a season with interesting stories about the fighters, revelations about the Cylons "plan" (which so far seems to be a pretty poorly thought out one), and illustrating the gradual changes in the characters as a result of the drawn out war.
Instead we got 10 3 minute webisodes (which were good and all, but still), and the season opener, then suddenly we're all back in space, where we started at the beginning of the show? Bleh. I was HOOKED On the first two seasons on DVD, to the point where I had to go buy the box sets because Netflix wasn't fast enough, but this season has been just all over the place.
Here's to hope for next year! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The people who don't like the show now are just sad that it isn't super action packed. Christ, go watch 24 or something :P
- TrevorBradley, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10A 22 episode 4th season means no 5th season. I think we can be sure of that.
Better to go out with a bang than a whimper though. - Frost9999, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10This show used to be great. Season one and two both had great stories, characters that mattered, and a balance of action and drama. Now it's more like a daytime soap. I'm waiting to find out that Adama and his son are having a gay affair and planning to adopt a cylon and run away together. I used to love this show, but I find it dull now.
What is season four going to be? Let me guess - two factions develop among the humans and civil war breaks out. No wait, that might actually be interesting. - danielsimon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Although Baltar is arguably the most annoying "villain" I've ever had to deal with in television, his plot is 10000x better than those of any of the "peasant episodes" they have jerked us around with the past two months. Callie and Chief? ***** them. That chick who died (not Starbuck)? Good riddance. Maelstrom, was that even a real episode??? Hopefully they get their ***** together for season 4, season 3 will then go down in the show's history as the absolute worst.
- OisinT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ilyag
I dunno but I'm with you.. I still love BSG and this season isn't all "shoot 'em up" and crazy, but I still think its well done and the social commentary is subtle and well played - unlike some other TV shows. - pslim940, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Some of the criticism of year 3 is a little overdone don't you think? It may not be as good as the first 2 seasons, but it's still better than 90% of the crap that's out there. I'm just happy that it's coming back for another season.
- hoist0that0rag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4considering all the speculation recently that there might not even BE a 4th season, i think this is great news.
- l0rdjim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You need to start with the mini-series before diving into Season 1
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Geee... really? Let's say you were in a country of a billion people. An outside force came in and wiped out all but 40,000, and kept chasing you around. Wouldn't you want to have a strong military? Or are you really suicidal at heart and would rather to just lay down and die than stand up and fight?
- jtorkbob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yeah, I've gotten my wife into it as well, we're working on season one together. Something about it, I guess.
- thedobber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
Couldn't agree more. I use to stay up to watch the show, even though I had DVR. With the majority of Season 3 I've either fallen asleep within the first 15 minutes or haven't even bothered to turn it on, figuring I'll watch the recording or torrent so I can fast forward through the melodrama.
I still have high hopes for the show, I just think they lost a bit of steam - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The writers are so in love with flashbacks that a little thing like being dead isn't going to keep Starbuck from getting screentime.
- diamondave2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Season one and two basically had shows that kept you guessing. The shows themselves were great, but when each one ended, you couldn't wait until the next one came out to see what was "going to happen next".
Season three's shows don't do that. You watch one and it's over, there's no anticipation for the next show. Regardless, it's one of the best shows on tv. - Kerr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I liked the way season 3 started out, but the soap opera it has turned into is not something I am fond of.
- tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I know what you're saying naio21. I've got the past two episodes on the DVR and I'm trying hard just to give a ***** enough to watch them. I don't care what they're trying to set up with the third season, it's ***** boring. Oh, Chief's head of the union this week, great. Oh no, chief's stuck in the airlock with his retarded wife now... seriously, wtf. Jezuz.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Have you even been paying attention to what is going on?
YOU PEOPLE NEED ATTENTION SPANS LONGER THAN 30 ***** SECONDS - ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@10rdjim
If you get the dvd set for Season 1, the first disc is the miniseries.
I can't tell you how many people that I've introduced to BSG. Their first reaction: "Battle-what?". After they watch the mini-series: "Is the whole series like this? Hey, can I borrow this set... err, do they have it at best buy?" - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, its better than Firefly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe everyone should stop having ADD, since when did good shows need to have constant action to keep people interested?
*rollseyes* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I thought season 3 had a great first half.....very powerful and better than season two. I couldn't wait to see the next episode. Then during the second half of the season......like so many people already wrote.....the episodes didn't go anywhere.
- Takami826, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yea, it was announced last night, the 22 ep season 4 will conclude the series.
I just hope they get back into the real story telling and not this inane drivel they've delivered in this 2nd half of season 3... it's going the way of LOST where the only thing LOST i the plot.
Yet I still watch it, but at least last week it focused more on Baltar and not filler stories that don't progress the storyline. - ScottPictures, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The problem BSG and Lost have is:
Stop creating questions and NEVER giving answers.
The cylon baby?
Baltar having visions of 6?
The other 5 cylons?
Lets say they find Earth, Now What? - Yggdrasil42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Although the 3rd year is a bit slow (imho), the first year is truly great. The second year is quite good as well. As you can tell from most of the other posts you're missing a great show.
- iwasdj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perhaps it will go the way of Six Feet Under, and make up for its terrible middle ages with a geriatric bang.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Season 3 has definitely not been as good as 1 and 2. But it's not bad. It started off HORRIBLE. I hated the New Caprica crap. "Waaaaaaaaaaaaah the cylons are crushing us. Let's blow up because, hey, there's only 40,000 of us left, and there's billions of Cylons that resurrect anytime they die. They'll give up eventually!"
But it got better once they got off the planet and started doing what galactica does best. Run away from the cylons in space.
I still have to say the worst.episode.ever. award should go to "Black Market" of season 2. Did they just pick up that script from Deep Space Nine and just change the names of the characters? - pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ron Moore said in a recent podcast that if SciFi ordered the back nine, it would be to wrap the show up. This is a good thing, I think. If the writers have a definite endoing in sight, it makes for more focused plotlines and a heightened sense of urgency.
- FreyrVanir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@ImTheDarkcyde
The Sci-fi Channel standard amount of episodes per season on their shows is 20.
Personally the scifi channel should stop shotting 20+ episodes a season for their shows and do like 13 or so. I've found that shows with that amount are much more focused and don't have much filler.
SGA is IMO a show that needs this a lot. It has a lot of episodes that are just one big filler. The only big stuff happens at the beginning, mid season break and the season finally. BSG does this also but just not to the same level. Their were several episodes, I just asked myself "Why did they bother filming this". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Yeah, season 3 was a little tamer than the previous seasons. My rationalization has been that they are making an attempt at building further character relationships and histories that will further serve story purposes in the future."
But you can create character development with some action altogether, for God's sake! Dammit, this "3.5" season has been a pain in the ass, they've turned BSG from a "space opera" to a plain and simple "mexican soap opera".
I'm almost giving up, and I was a "BSG evangelist" few months ago... :-( - wrxpert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think they really need a St. Elsewhere ending. It was all a 7 year old playing with toys.
- jeezus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What I fail to understand is how the same geeks can criticize the political maneuverings going on in BSG and then go off and tear through George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. They're the same thing, people!!
If you're bored, run around the living room shouting "PEW PEW" while the adults are talking. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Someone replaced BSG writers with Gilmore Girls ones during the night. Those bastards!
- gabrielsean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1answers to a lot of that are in season 3's last episode.
- gabrielsean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1we discover 4 of the final 5 in season 3's last episode.
- urgot2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'All Along The Watchtower' with sitars is one of the most terrible/funny things I have heard in a show for a while.
- CColtManM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I think it's about time it moves to a HDTV format right off that bat.
