- sucram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Also Richard Biggs who played Dr. Stephen Franklin died in 2004.
- Chinzon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Babylon 5 is great, if you actually bother to watch it, but Andreas Katsulas is dead now (RIP). It wouldn't be the same without G'Kar.
- ben_nushmut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, B5 has never been known for being a "big budget" property. I recall reading that the B5 pilot (The Gathering) had cost about $900,000. Now, factor in the cost of bringing back any veterans of the series and a larger effects budget, I'd bet that we could see solid quality for around $10 million. If the costs of set construction get defrayed by multiple movies, it'll be a big help. I just hope JMS can recapture the magic of the series with this project.
Color me excited. - fenris6644, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6B5 was a pioneering show that was ahead of its time. One of the first major productions to use CG for special effects and certainly the first sci-fi to introduce a long-term story spanning across multiple years. Can't wait to see the new stuff!
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think it would be more correct to say that Babylon 5 didn't focus on the plot quite as much as BSG. B5 certainly has a massive story spanning five years... However, it's not as dire as BSG, so there's more room for side-stories.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm glad to see more B5, but the phrase "direct to DVD" usually translates to "suckfest" in the minds of most people.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I know a few people that did effects for the original, I'm sure they'll be happy to hear this.
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The series was Crusade. Excalibur was the name of the ship.
- CLANORY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm really glad to hear about this. Babylon 5 was my favorite sci-fi show for a long time. It was probably the first show that expected it's audience to be intelligent enough to follow an intricate, convoluted plot. I'm thrilled there will be more stories in this universe, even though some characters will be greatly missed.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And Tim Chaote died a while back as well (Zathras).
- NinjaJedi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Y'know, although I'm not a big fan of Babylon 5 the one thing that got me interested intially about the first series and pilot was that the CG effects were done in Lightwave 3D in conjuction with a Video Toaster on Amiga desktop computers! For me this was great as, at the time, I used to have an Amiga 500.
- Koskun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The plot you say it didn't have is a huge mistake. JMS wrote all 5 seasons of B5 in one go. It was meant to take all 5 years for the story from start to finish.
There was a great plot for the series, it just wasn't aimed at the milisecond attention span of reality TV show watchers like most new shows coming out are. - dukrous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You do realize the line was spoken to get fired from a comic shop, right? I don't think it was meant to be taken literally.
And Spaced is great...http://www.tv.com/spaced/show/1960/summary.html - anachronaut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Pretty much everything Babylon 5-related after Season 4 was questionable if not terrible, in my opinion. Once Ted Turner & TNT got their grubby paws on it, it was just never the same series. That supposedly "hot" female Captain who couldn't act her way out of an open airlock... blechhh. She alone was almost enough to completely ruin it for me; that whole situation with her just reeked of heavy-handed corporate influence. Plus, without the whole Vorlon/Shadow dynamic, the episodes just felt a little hollow and soulless.
Don't get me wrong, there were still some really good story lines (the fall of Centauri Prime, for instance), but it just seemed like it was a constant uphill battle against TNT's cheesy influence. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If I remember correctly all of the space battles were done in CG and Fenris6644 it took them almost four years to get to the end of the Shadow war. It was almost like the show was done in real time one week passed in the real world and one week passed in the show.
- ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I dunno, I thought they looked pretty good for the mid to late 90s
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Rangers was a pilot that came out in very late 2001 or early 2002. It just recently hit DVD.
In my opinion, it wasn't very good. The cast had a definite '90210 in Space' feel with only a couple interesting crew members (the female Narn engineer was my favorite) and the late, great Andreas Katsulas' G'kar as exceptions.
Between LotR and Crusade I think there was one good series waiting to be let out... Neither had quite the right mix, though. - tekmage3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hmm ok I'm changing my mind I reread the story and some sidestories in the B5 universe might be a good idea. If they did something on the Groundpounders that would be great.
Sure sign me up ! - ArchAngel21x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's too bad they screwed up the transfer to DVD. The regular shots were in wide screen, but the CGI scenes were not. Warner Brothers solution? Crop the CGI scenes to create a fake wide screen look, and in doing that they hurt the quality of the picture.
You have no idea how upset I was in I found out Crusades was canceled. I am getting used to good shows being canceled though. - slundal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Rangers came out a quite while a go. 2002 i think.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It seems to me like JMS could get Jerry Doyle and Walter Koenig back easily enough. They and cheap, but talented no name actors would be all he would need to make a good "humanity vs the telepaths" story arc. That kind of plot could even get by on very few special effects with good writing and good acting.
I was amazed at how good (some of ) that amateur recreation of Start Trek TOS was, so I think a powerhourse like JMS with real actors could do a decent job on a low budget direct to DVD deal. - Amnesia10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Babylon 5 had a huge story going on in the background, many of the episodes had minimal content to further the overall story but that was part of the fun. They could go off on a tangent at times without ruining the overall story. It concentrated much more on the character development than any of the other series It gave hints of what was to come, without exposing the whole story till late in the series. Individually the episodes may not have been overwhelming but collectively they rocked! Hence it was voted the best sci-fi series of all time.
- chesterton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It was a show by hard Sci-Fi fans for hard Sci-Fi fans. Not fanboys. Fans. It was the first show to feature CGI in nearly every episode. The massive story arc was pretty much unheard of. The characters were interesting, flawed, accessible. It treated the audience like they had an IQ higher than a snail. They took huge risks. The scope of the story was mind-blowing.
- psients, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Things I want from B5 guys:
1) Properly re-render the hours of destroyed special effects shots in the B5 DVDs, even if you have to remake them from scratch.
2) Release the footage for the B5 space-combat flight sim, preferably in a new game.
3) Finish Crusade while explaining more of the telepath crisis
4) Find a way to get us all those unreleased Hypernauts episodes
5) Make a new Hypernauts show, preserving the premise of a group of troublesome yet serious-minded young teenagers independently dealing with grown-up issues while piloting awesome mechs.
6) Oh, and see if you can still get that guy who does the voice of Megabyte from ReBoot to do your commercial bumpers. That was bitchin'.
Other than that, whatever. - NinjaJedi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I LOVE Spaced!! Best comedy ever! I've turned all my friends into converts and now they quote it like mad!!
If you've never seen it.... DO IT!! (buy, borrow, beg or steal a copy - you'll love it too!) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think this could be a good plan, and with the way the entertainment industry is going, the direct to DVD idea is not as bad or low budgeted as it once was. Let's hope that he doesn't ruin it for all the fans!
- dvdchef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The special effects were damn good compared to most anything else on tv at the time. They were the first real tv show to use complete CGI special effects, no blue/greenscreen and models, courtesy of the Amiga 2000 and NewTek's Video toaster. Amazing for its time, and it still holds up well even today. I do agree that in the beginning it looked a little "too good", but once they started cutting the sharpness down on the rendered frames output, it looked much more believable.
One of the best long term story arcs ever attempted on TV. - Starfire42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Excalibur is called Crusade. As I've heard it, it was here JMS came into a deadlock with TNT, they wanted more sex and violence, while he didn't. Thats why it only made 13 episodes.
- Waylander1970, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Well, I had a look at the site, and I've never heard of Spaced Out. It sounds pretty ***** to me based on the site itself so I think I'll stick with B5.
- anachronaut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Jeez, the edit feature really needs a little work. It makes it appear that you only got half a post in if you don't submit your edit quickly enough (maybe the problem lies with the quotation marks, as that's where it appeared to be cut off until I reloaded the page).
Sorry about that, please bury my duplicate post. - marix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3without a decent production budget I don't see these things being very well done. Not saying that it won't have a decent production budget but, direct to dvd rarely does.
- Sopranosbaby, on 12/20/2008, -0/+0This CD represents mainly music from the first season of the show. The main themes heard included the Requiem for the Line, one of the best pieces from the first season. Also included are snippets of themes used through out the first season. Ranging from quiet, emotional pieces to louder battle sections, Christopher Franke's music is journey of pure excitement. The second season is also represented with music from the first half of the season. A definate change in style can be heard, as the show began to get darker in tone and so the music matches the events of the show. With the first season only represented on this volume and the episodic CD "Chrysalis", I recommend this CD totally. Definately worth purchasing, even if your'e not a Babylon 5 fan.
http://www.dvdcollects.com - ashembers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So true. They canned in some poor music that really distracted from the series, and basically pushed it out the door. A little more editing would have helped too, and that all takes cash. If they brought back Christopher Franke for the background music, it would have a fighting chance, because the creator JMS knows how to write - he just needs funds to get quality production support & it will be great!
- masskurec, on 03/03/2009, -0/+0the series are not that good

http://www.dvdcollects.com - burrito4891, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2man this is cool. I just finished watching the series via bittorrent, and I find it both exciting and ironic that its coming back.
- ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is Andrea Thompson still an anchor on CNN's Headline News channel?
- crossers, on 07/22/2008, -0/+0a phrase from article. The thrust of the news is this: straight-to-video BABYLON 5 adventures...involving B5 characters in an anthology format...should arrive late next year. Written and directed by JMS.

I think I liked it most 1/3 of the way in, when characters were stuggling with addiction, human/machine hybrids, and Walter Koenig's character started to develop. Then it got crappy. Also, I had a thing for Andrea Thompson, then she left too. *sniff*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Also Richard Biggs who played Dr. Stephen Franklin died in 2004"
How does a 44 year old guy in good condition get a tear in his aorta? - Plotinus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0G'Kar is dead? Oh no! I'm taking a few minutes to collect myself. Now. Spaced is great, do watch it. The line is, as pointed out, a quote designed to gain the effect of getting fired (it worked). B5 had an excellent arc, detailed and consistent. Even if it was low budget it still has a fair chance of being better than 90% of the sci-fi that is out there these days (and yes I happily admin BSG is awesome - but only because JMS showed the way on arcs and audience expectations - which he happily admits was inspired byB7 - work it out)
- Waylander1970, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1So is that URL you posted, 404 not found. Try lopping off the bracket next time :)
- tekmage3000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I don't know about this too many actor's are gone now. This might just be an idea too late.
- Croepha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2There have been two attempts, Excalibur and Legend of the Rangers neither finished a season, both failed because of bad time slots and unfair competition
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The special effects on Babylon 5 were massively cheap-looking. As the seasons went on, they looked more and more like a lame videogame than production-quality effects. But, I don't think most B5 fans really cared, as the series had more to do with characters and multi-season story arcs than any action. So, that's what this thing will probably look like: very cheap and out-dated, but hopefully with an interesting story.
- ThePict, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Hot chicks?!? Ivanova was the hottest! And with the aborted love affair with Talia Winters (played by Andrea Thompson, who left the show unexpectedly, thus ruining that plot arc), it doesn't get any hotter than that!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I think one just came out "Legend of the Rangers" but I might be wrong I was overseas for about the past year.
- estacado, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I remember B5. It similar to what Battlestar Galactica is today, only with not as many hot chicks in it. Though the stories were good, it just didn't have that big plot that BSG has to make you want to watch the next one.
