- Altotus, on 10/09/2009, -0/+11How it's Made should be on the list. Honestly, my kids spend most of their time building stuff (Lego, Knex, cardboard starships, paper airplanes, etc.), but what TV they do get is things of this nature. We went on a tour of an old gold-mine once and at one point my almost-5-year-old turned the corner and exclaimed "look, far, that's a hydraulic drill and those are the feed lines. They use it to bore holes in the rock and then pack them with dynamite and BOOM. Do you think it still works?"
The old miner that was the tour guide looked at my son and asked him how he knew all that, to which my son replied, "I know all about mining and excavation from watching Mike Rowe." (honestly, his words). The guide had to ask who Mike Rowe was, and my son was really surprised that he didn't know of Dirty Jobs.
Honestly, between Mythbusters, How It's Made, Dirty Jobs, and the various engineering shows (e.g. Modern Marvels), I think my boys have a VERY different view of how the modern world works than many of their peers (and adults). It's refreshing to have people come up to you and say things like "your son certainly knows a lot about heat transfer" or "I had too look up what he was talking about when he mentioned 'normal force'". The kids really gobble this stuff up. - Dagreenman, on 10/09/2009, -0/+9The problem is that there are so few educational shows compared to 10 years ago. TLC has become the stupid ***** Jon and Kate network, History has become WWII and Aliens, and i can't think of a single kids show with the same level of education as Bill Nye the Science Guy. Even kids cartoons (with a couple of exceptions) are noticeably dumber. Look at Spongebob 10 years ago and look at it now. Completely unrecognizable.
- wolfbane691, on 10/09/2009, -1/+8well their`s two Avatar movies.Avatar and Avatar the Last Air Bender
- missjames, on 10/08/2009, -2/+9LOVE this idea. dirty jobs is definitely a good show for all the family to watch. and all of mike's dirty jokes can go over the kids' heads.
- sageerrant, on 10/09/2009, -0/+6Sorry, you've just encountered a troll.
It's best not to feed them. - wuha1981, on 10/09/2009, -6/+11I don't even have cable. Kids should be outside building forts and using sling shots to shoot cans. A lot funner then mind numbing sitting in front of the TV. Sure there's educational programs but it just teaches kids to sit in front of the tube and when they grow up they spend too much time in front of the tube and gain 400 pounds.
It's like those all ages or under 19 bar nights.. just trains them to be alchoholics LOL - numbnick, on 10/09/2009, -0/+5I wish History still showed WWII stuff. Now it's all aliens, bigfoot, and ice road truckers. I can understand one episode of a show dedicated to mythical beasts or aliens "contact" throughout history, but now they spend half of the day talking with nutjobs who are currently searching for these nonexistent creatures.
- sleestakslayer, on 10/09/2009, -0/+5I used to love the science channels because they had lots of shows about paleontology and dinosaurs, which was always a sure bet with kids and science geeks like me. But alas, they have dumped a lot of that programming and replaced it with jackasses building choppers and hot rods. I would hate to think that dinosaurs no longer spark the imaginations of youth.
- Mokshaguy390, on 10/09/2009, -1/+5I want Science Court back.
- smemily, on 10/09/2009, -0/+4History is 1/4 aliens, 1/4 stuff about Hitler, 1/4 Nostradamus *****, and 1/4 sex through history.
- Andrwmorph, on 10/09/2009, -0/+4Arguably educational programming will expand their knowledge of the world more than playing with cans. Its a very different world than it used to be.
- falconear, on 10/09/2009, -1/+4Sounds a little like this guy is a shill for the cable company, but those are among my favorites as well. I've been getting my son to watch Mythbusters (is Kari pregnant?) with me for the "stuff goes boom" factor, but I figure that's how it starts. The History channel was better when it was history, and not conspiracy theories and end of the world crap all the time, although I did enjoy 'Life After People.' Finally, I used to like 'No Reservations' but now I'm starting to think Anthony Bordain is kind of a douche.
As for my son and cartoons...he mainly likes The Simpsons (he's 3, go figure) so how can I complain about that? - fuzzynyanko, on 10/09/2009, -0/+3One of my favorite programs: NOVA Science NOW.
- rocknog, on 10/09/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing. Pisses me off how actual science shows seem to have disappeared. I grew up watching Mr. Wizard, Bill Nye, and Beakman, and then I moved on to channels like the Discovery Channel and TLC, but then suddenly all the shows I was actually interested in went away and were replaced by ***** reality TV.
- TBBucs, on 10/09/2009, -0/+3Kari had a baby a couple months back. Stella Byron.
- shauncorleone, on 10/09/2009, -0/+3Sorry, but I ate the cookie I was going to give you.
- Ne007, on 10/09/2009, -1/+3How about they don't watch any tv?
- SteaminTmann, on 10/09/2009, -0/+2It's true. Just because you're smart, doesn't mean you're not a fatty.
- Nairebis, on 10/09/2009, -1/+3My kids don't watch that much TV, fortunately, but I have to say that Phineas and Ferb rocks.
- bigteebo, on 10/09/2009, -0/+2Chalk this up to "Sounds like an Onion article"
- TBBucs, on 10/09/2009, -0/+2Hm ch hm ch hm ch hm ch
- shredswithpiks, on 10/09/2009, -1/+2"A lot funner then mind numbing sitting in front of the TV."
I'm hoping there's a balance between becoming a "very educated TV fatty" and a "what's grammar slingshot champion." - k3nt0456, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1Today's cartoons really make me sad, I'ts like they don't even have plots anymore or they can't strike a balance between comedy and story
- jaimequin, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1Kids need to interact with other kids and look forward to that vs watching myth busters. Besides, aren't all these shows on late at night anyway?
- bashnu, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1Pocoyo!
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=pocoyo ... - Fogdelune, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1Neil DeGrasse Tyson FTW.
- mrmaple, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1Sid the Science Kid (science kid.... science kid... science kid...)
Fantastic for the 4-6 crowd. - rizzono, on 10/10/2009, -0/+1Instead of people relying on a tv to teach their children people need to actually be parents and teach their children themselves.
- jadedsunrise, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1I agree that TV has its place teaching kids, and nowadays there's more informative shows than ever before. However I have to sympathize a bit with parents upon reading this. They really are damned if they do, and damned if they don't.
- inactive, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1The remaining 1/4 is quite good though.
- nepidae, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1I'm not sure if you really remember cartoons from before. There were plenty of shows that were just advertisements for some kind of sugary cereal or cheap toy.
- brandonb90, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1Even if it's not "educational" programming, there ARE quite a few deep, intellectual shows out there that stimulate the mind. None of them are really appropriate for children though, I'm afraid.
- 2caster3, on 10/09/2009, -1/+1Are your kids being raised by your tv enough? Send them outside to play you lazy bastards.
- Swiz, on 10/09/2009, -0/+0I don't think they watch enough tv....how are you ment to enjoy your own life with kids all over the place wanting to do creative stuff..and why should I have to read stories late at night when eastenders is on..
- Mothrog, on 10/09/2009, -1/+1Has he watched History or Discovery lately? They're all retarded reality shows now.
- Fhwqhgads, on 10/09/2009, -1/+1Are your kids watching enough ads and turning into nice little consumers?
- nepidae, on 10/09/2009, -1/+1Or they could read a book. Here is a tip for those families who want to save money: Cancel your cable television and head to the library once a week, bonus points if you ride your bike there.
- morepowerr, on 10/09/2009, -2/+1 If I could get cable internet without basic cable here. I would be using an antenna. Because you get about the same channels on basic $19 a month cable. As you do for the 1 time price of a DIY Antenna here.

- hereticoftruth, on 10/09/2009, -5/+1As a category, I think cartoons are the worst things to let your kids watch, most of them anyway, including some christian cartoons. Getting kids imprinted on the immature behavior of their favorite cartoon character is one of the worst things you can allow to happen to a child. We don't need young Bevis and Butthead emulaters in our children. Amongst teenagers, horror movies and their ilk should be discouraged also. It would be unfortunate to let them get obsessed with horror movies. That would negatively impact their moral values as well. And, of course the music they listen to. That being said, all children will go on and make their own mistakes and learn the hard way. But if they have heard and seen the right way to live, they will know which way to go when they are ready.
- p8ntslinger676, on 10/09/2009, -11/+3I really dont watch TV, and when i do it is one of the following four stations Discovery, National Geographic, History or Speed, the rest are absolute crap imho.
- JessicaWinters, on 10/09/2009, -12/+3My nephew waste time watching that stupid cartoon Avatar. I can't believe they're making a movie of it. The movie doesn't even look anything like the cartoon. Avatar doesn't have any blue creepy people in it.
