- dougvfr750, on 06/24/2008, -1/+91I'm excited about the show coming here, but I really like the British crew.
- erranttv, on 06/24/2008, -16/+89They''ll dumb it down for American audiences.
- SpookyET, on 06/25/2008, -17/+56 “We’re going to do it exactly the same as they do it in England, and you’ll be able to say whatever you want about any car you like regardless of who makes it or if they sponsor the show or not.”
What's the ***** point? Why don't you just air the British show? Are Yanks so ***** retarded that they don't understand a non-American accent?
I suppose that they are. In Europe, you have Italian telly, British telly, German telly, etc. In the states, you only have Yankie channels that show more commercials than content except BBC America (still shows commercials) that requires middle tier cable and 2 Mexican channels. Canadian channels are not available. BBC Canada is better as well.
I am yet to see a US reproduction of a British show better. The Office sucks. The LIfe on Mars remake sucks. Many other reproductions suck. Compare Spooks to Alias. Spooks is believable. It's realistic. Characters die all the time. Alias is rubbish. If you saw Spooks on A&E (renamed to MI-5; it's spelt MI5, you cretins) and think that it sucks, note that it was cut from 57-59 minutes to 40 minutes to fit 20 minutes of commercials. So, you're missing part of the story, making some episodes totally horrible. After watching 2 on A&E, I have acquired the originals. Take, the ***** show and make it 1.5 hours long to fit your commercials. But, they won't do that. If they can fit more shows, they can show more commercials targeted at different audiences.
What these morons don't realise is that British telly is paid by taxes. Thus, people demand quality. Therefore, there are no commercials, and shows are 57-58 minutes long. Furthermore, they don't have Hollywood budgets. So, they demand quality actors and good stories. They build character relationships. At the core of the telly is acting, which cannot be replaced by CGI.
In the states, you get to pay $120/month for cable to watch commercials.
Top Gear will not be like the British show with an American accent. It will be 40 minutes long with 20 minutes of commercials. It will probably have a bigger budget. It may even have bigger stunts. But, it will not have the chemistry of Top Gear. Top Gear is global. Just show the original you Yankie bastards. You may learn proper English as well as seeing cool European cars. Besides the Corvette and Mustang derivatives (saleen), you've got nothing. The Viper is rubbish.
PS: I'm a bloody European stuck with rednecks in Yankland. - thatsoccerkid, on 06/25/2008, -2/+32I miss love line.
- vacax, on 06/25/2008, -4/+33For some reason in America I think a race between two cities in a Bugatti Veyron or Mercedes McLaren SLR will probably end up with somebody in jail. They have big shoes to fill. Carolla is no Jeremy Clarkson.
- Laminarcissus, on 06/25/2008, -2/+30The only thing I think is incredibly important that they do in the British show that I can't imagine them doing in the American show is slag on current cars on the market if they feel it's appropriate. The BBC Top Gear hosts really let fly on cars when there's a problem, and I don't see NBC allowing that to happen to its sponsors.
Without that, though, it's just a cute little car adventure show for enthusiasts. No depth, no cred. - Dylson, on 06/25/2008, -2/+28That is THE best crew you could have. The American version won't hold a candle to the British version.
- lowriderjohn, on 06/25/2008, -3/+27BBC Top Gear - no advertisers to pull ads because of something negative said about their product.
NBC Top Gear - hmmm, we don't want advertisers to pull ads because we'll lose money. I've got it, we just won't put any cars on the show that the guys don't like!!!
I really think this will flop just because of the way the networks work. I don't believe for a second they'll be able to speak their mind without fear of reprisal from advertisers. At least I'll still be able to watch the original :) - Raisedshoulder, on 06/25/2008, -7/+31Didn't people say that the US version of The Office will never live up to the UK?
- innocentsinner, on 06/25/2008, -0/+24"Officials from Top Gear in England, who are producing the show, along with “everyone involved,” have assured Carolla that he will be able to speak his mind on any car “without fear of reprisal” from advertisers, which he fully plans to do. "
Would be nice, if true - DrCrankenstein, on 06/24/2008, -0/+22The one thing that keeps my hope alive is that NBC and the hosts seem to know it will be incredibly hard to replicate the British one well. They know there are big shoes to fill, and they know they're slated to suck. Let's hope they don't and we get a kickass car show like TG.
- TunaFishGangsta, on 06/25/2008, -0/+20Agreed. And I'd especially like to thank Bittorrent RSS feeds for automatically bringing it to America within an hour of it's air date in the UK.
- MyDiggIsBig, on 06/25/2008, -2/+22I wonder how many Toyota Corolla jokes will be made
- bermudianguy, on 06/25/2008, -0/+18I wish I could digg you up mulitple times for that comment it is brilliant and 100 % true . Although there are a few shows on US tv that aren't that bad mind you they aren't remakes on television shows from the UK as far as I know . However for the most part I prefer British television or telly to the shows you get on US TV , I will always believe that Top Gear will be better than Top Gear US and you better believe that Jeremy and the lads will be making fun of Adam Corolla and his group as well. Oh well at if the US version flunks out the original and better of the two will still be kicking.
- dojonz, on 06/25/2008, -1/+19We can't judge.
- OutrightLie, on 06/25/2008, -1/+19Why are you digging him down?
He's right. The British crew is wonderful. They have a chemistry between each other. And just the perfect amount of wit and humor to make the show extremely entertaining. This is (at least) one TV show that we Americans simply can't do better. - santaliqueur, on 06/25/2008, -8/+26Anyone who has listened to Loveline knows that Adam Carolla is the funniest man alive. Literally a millionaire. Literally.
- dojonz, on 06/25/2008, -2/+18God damn, he has CAR in his name. What more do you want?
- waydee, on 06/25/2008, -1/+16They completely changed it, it works but it doesn't really appeal to me nor anyone apart from the Americans as far as I can tell. The British version is typically dry and awkward, the American version plays out more like typical American comedy - obvious but still worth a few laughs.
- holmcross, on 06/25/2008, -0/+15Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares (UK) > Hells Kitchen
The Office (UK) > The Office (US)
Top Gear (UK) soon-to-be > Top Gear (US)
And as someone pointed out, Iron Chef (original) >>> Iron Chef (US)
And no, I'm not European. The crap on Amercian TV these days just blows. - sdcarter, on 06/25/2008, -0/+14This could go one of two ways. It could be awesome or it could suck. There will be no in-between. In all likelihood, it'll suck. But Carolla is funny enough and knows enough about cars that it might actually work. They have big shoes to fill; but I wish them the best. Just be wary if "And now, from Jay Leno's garage..." becomes a bit.
- rileyhallwood, on 06/25/2008, -1/+14*****. im going to be pissed if this is just another one of those mustang loving chevy hickfests that americans call a car show.
- Barackalypse, on 06/25/2008, -1/+13Based on the cast photo in the article, I am renaming this show Douchebag Garage. Seriously, out of a world full of talented individuals, why would you pick these guys to do it?
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -0/+12Crossing my fingers that this will be good Having 2 Top Gears to watch would be sweet.
If it sucks, oh well. - kevin1987, on 06/25/2008, -8/+20Half of you people are idiots. Babbling on and on about how Adam Carolla knows nothing about cars, and how it will automatically "suck" because it's an American version.
Carolla probably knows more about cars that 75% of the commenters here. The cast actually looks pretty good besides that TLC handyman guy... I donno wtf he is doing in there. Give it a chance, but if you're not going to do that at LEAST give a reason rather than just sounding like a stuck up ***** who nothing is good enough for.
May I also remind you all that nothing is happening to the British version... The world will keep turning either way, people.. - Hefelumpman, on 06/25/2008, -0/+12If Carolla's as much of a car-nut as he says he is, then I don't think that they will. The fact that they're sticking to the UK version's mantra of saying what they actually think about the cars, regardless of sponsorship, gives me some hope. It may be a tiny coracle of hope, but it's definitely something.
- mizzrym, on 06/25/2008, -18/+30They were right.
- bratterscain, on 06/25/2008, -1/+13If I had to generalize, I'd sadly say yes, in comparison. It's interesting how geography plays a role in car design and how a lot of American cars are designed for America's big open roads.
- belebih, on 06/25/2008, -3/+14Needs more girls jumping on trampolines.
- UGM2099, on 06/25/2008, -1/+12He works on cars, owns a bunch of them and always talks about them.
- aussiessuck, on 06/25/2008, -4/+15The audience is already dumb we're just giving them what they want.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quest_for_Ratings - HunterSlayer, on 06/25/2008, -0/+10It will never live up to the British version. The chemistry between Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May is unbeatable. Their charisma and wit is what makes the show. Also keep in mind that the car reviews won't be unbiased due to sponsors. I even enjoyed their Ground Force special, seriously, these guys are good enough to make gardening interesting.
I'm an avid car enthusiast so I will watch the American version but no matter what they do, I know I won't be as entertained as I would be with the original Top Gear. I would like to thank my fellow pirates for making the Top Gear episodes available to people overseas. The debut of Season 11 was fantastic and from what they showed in the montage, this will be one hell of a season. - RobotCitizen, on 06/25/2008, -0/+9The US version is going to be *****. They've got one actual driver. The other two guys are an annoying second-rate comedian and some home improvement guy. Compare this to Jeremy Clarkson who has been a motoring journalist for 20 years, James May who has been writing about cars for a similar length of time, and Richard Hammond, who is just plain ***** awesome, period.
It's not just about the jokes and crazy expeditions. The Top Gear trio have gasoline (petrol) in their blood. They get car culture, and they make you feel like you get car culture too. It's like the car speaks a special language, and they are translating it for you. Their eloquent, sometimes poetic descriptions of the driving experience make you feel like you just test drove the car yourself. Some of their segments are like car opera.
These three American meatheads can't pull that off. The best we'll get is car pro wrestling. - humpy, on 06/25/2008, -0/+9Yeah because jeremy clarkson and james may are quite the hunks.
- waydee, on 06/25/2008, -1/+9I don't entirely understand the need for this but i'll give it a chance. I've never fully got the reason why shows need to be remade for a US audience though, yes I appreciate that there are some jokes that only British/Europeans/well informed Americans get, bashing of (chiefly US) cars and other cultures but it must be obvious it's all light hearted stuff.
It can probably be said that airing the UK version wouldn't go down well however, I hate to generalise like this but doubt that many Americans want to see some middle aged (loveable) arsehole like Clarkson mouthing off about some little Italian supermini they can't even buy. I think thats just an American thing, they're not exposed to foreign TV like the rest of the world is exposed to theirs and probably have less tolerance/willingness to give it a chance. Not that we in the UK are much different, a US car show featuring some loudmouth American clarkson equivalent wouldn't be popular but little things like accents and jokes we don't entirely understand don't put us off. - roodammy44, on 06/25/2008, -0/+8Many English shows have been "Americanised" and have been destroyed in the process.
- JPOnion, on 06/25/2008, -0/+8I remember them bringing it over and SpookyET is right, they edited it to fit 20 minutes of commercials.
You're probably right that americans don't like to be told our cars suck. We have to deal with them every day as is, being *told* they suck is like putting salt on the wounds. - oobi, on 06/25/2008, -0/+8its gonna be a hassle importing The Stig every time they wanna test a car on the track..
- roodammy44, on 06/25/2008, -0/+8The BBC is far from some incompetent bureaucracy.
The programs they make blow other channels out of the water - planet earth in HD, top gear, have I got news for you, life on mars, red dwarf - the list goes on.
Not only that but they provide the best radio channels in the country (radio 1, although there's about 10 of them for each different music taste).
They embrace the latest technology - most of what you want to see is available to be streamed online.
And they're *required* to provide niche programming like political documentaries.
All of this WITHOUT ADS and for £10 a month. Which is like a very basic satellite subscription.
The BBC is a national institution and the british people would be culturally worse off without it. - dojonz, on 06/25/2008, -1/+9"Everytime I come here, I feel like the only civilised human being at a garden party for very rich apes" - Jeremy Clarkson on America.
- LanceUppercut, on 06/25/2008, -0/+8The BBC Top Gear has set the bar so high, I don't know if we will be able to come close. They seem to have a seemingly unlimited budget, and unlike the US hosts, they are actually quite funny. The 3 of them play so well off of one another. I am sure they have writers that make all this happen, but seeing it on camera is actually pretty remarkable. I actually have my girlfriend watching Top Gear from the BBC with me. Our Mondays are pretty fun TV wise, with Top Gear and American Gladiators airing at 8. Sorry, American Gladiators is great :) w/ Wolf and Crush. Hellga seems so lonely. I bet she is a member here.
- roodammy44, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7I agree with waydee.
The great thing about the office in the UK was that it was a totally new type of comedy programme. - TheKorn2, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7Ah yes, another ***** to emerge from the anus of NBC to tarnish an otherwise fine name...
...Coupling....
...Bionic Woman...
There are more but I'm too tired to go look them up. Whatever. - UGM2099, on 06/25/2008, -2/+8...and who is 10X smarter than you.
- roodammy44, on 06/25/2008, -0/+6Remember that we have no adverts on the BBC.
I think that's the main reason we've had no problems with that sort of thing. - myhandleondigg, on 06/25/2008, -1/+7Has everybody that is excited about this show forgotten how absolutely terrible the Adam Carolla show was? Dead silence after every awkward joke.. you could hear people's nostrils squeeking.
- TiMMY8765, on 06/25/2008, -0/+6yeah but if it's good we will have two good car shows (ok so one good one and one great one, but you get my point)
- kazamx, on 06/25/2008, -1/+7Yea, but we all know thats bollocks.
The moment the first week is over and one of the big car companies threatens to pull its advertising not only during the show but from the network as a whole, the money crunchers will panic. Even if they hold firm by week 2 and a 2nd company starts making threats then they will fold. - whitecracker, on 06/25/2008, -5/+11Jesus Christ at least have of you morons haven't even read the article.
*Carolla doesn't know ***** about cars! (Read the article, not true).
*Carolla won't be able to say ***** because NBC won't let him. (Read the article, they address this and it sounds legit to me).
*They'll say Toyota Corolla jokes! (COVERED).
*Carolla can't improv well. (WHAT?! That's his entire ***** career jackass). - fletcherrr, on 06/25/2008, -0/+6dugg for the loveline reference.
