- lordzelo, on 04/29/2008, -6/+30Please remember, that these people ARE NOT Mormons. The FLDS are a fanatic cult branch off of the origional Mormon church. Yes, Mormons did practice polygamy, but the church abolished it in the 1800's.
I have some Mormon friends and they are most definatly Monogymous and are some of the nicest most law abiding people I know. They would never make children do these kinds of things. - yosserhughes, on 04/29/2008, -0/+22Look; its not about Miley Cyrus, or the LDS, Mormons or whatever the hell they call themselves. Its about child rape. Simple as that, if these girls had babies when they were 16, they were raped, they did not consent, they are not of an age when they could consent to sex. They simply could not agree to sex, they were raped.
Furthermore, their mothers and everyone else that knew they were being raped are accessories to it. Its not about religious rights or government interference, its child rape.
Whats so hard to understand. - rpayne656, on 04/29/2008, -4/+25Polygamy is just a religiously justified harem. It should be legal between (or among) consenting adults, but we all know why older men in this sect marry young teenagers.
/Uni-brows are HAWT - MScrip, on 04/29/2008, -0/+21I don't know about you... but a "religious" group of people forcing a 16 year old to marry her first cousin is a bit chilling. Or an 18 year old being forced to marry a 50 year old man. Those 2 examples came from the WE channel documentary. And you know those aren't the only 2 cases. I bet there's lots of pregnant teens at that ranch, and I bet that the fathers of those babies aren't other teenage boys.
- hauntedchippy, on 04/29/2008, -0/+20A child has the right to an education. The right to proper medical care. The right not to be forced to marry cousins. The right not to be raped. The right to know of the colour red.
- jetblackz4, on 04/29/2008, -0/+19I am all for freedom of religion but pedophilia disguised as religion is disgusting.
No child should be forced into marriage at such a young age and even more so should NOT have any sexual contact with older men. - Suricou, on 04/29/2008, -1/+18Biased accounts, though they may be true, should not be trusted without additional evidence of greater reliability. For example, http://digg.com/politics/Texas_sect_girls_mostly_m ... - this confirms that, at the FLDS ranch, it was very common for underaged girls to be not just sexually active but pregnent. This supports the claims of the documentory.
- carpespasm, on 04/29/2008, -0/+17Because some things are objectively bad and it takes a government power to make sure that cults that abuse people aren't allowed to flourish and that vigilante justice isn't carried out on people who've done nothing wrong just because a group thinks they have.
- hauntedchippy, on 04/29/2008, -0/+16Dude, its child rape.
- Alli3388, on 04/29/2008, -1/+15Uh... You don't think that the fact that many of those young girls, aged 13 - 17, who were taken from the compound were found to either be mothers or pregnant??? Look, it's not the polygamy that the government is after, or that is chilling. It's that the girls born or taken there are forced to stop their educations at very young ages, get married to men 3 times their age when they're 12, 13, 14, etc, and forced to be baby machines, without any opportunity to even have the choice as to whether or not they want to live this way. I'm actually surprised how many people posting comments here support PEDOPHILIA. WTF?!??
- carpespasm, on 04/29/2008, -2/+15in as far as it documents the stories of women who've experienced life inside the FLDS this seems (from the excerpt) like a credible documentary to me. It didn't seem like there was any skewing of what they were saying to make things seem worse than they were, they seemed bad enough just from the interviews.
- breadfred, on 04/29/2008, -1/+11I concede, I am not the first to comment. But it has more words.
It is to me incrompehencable that people are abused in this way. I am against too much governmental control, but some visits to new parents by trained doctors or social workers could help prevent this dreadful situation.
Excuse my ignorance, but where I live, all newly born kids must be reported. I am pretty sure the same applies to the US of A. Over here in Britain, they come round to make sure you have the space and capabilities to raise your child. I know it is pretty basic, and things go wrong over here as well - but the way this has escalated defies governmental responsibility. - inactive, on 04/29/2008, -0/+10why aren't any of these men in jail?...or at least being persecuted by the media?...
- h4k0r, on 04/29/2008, -0/+10Anyone else reminded of the movie "The Village" when looking at the way they dress?
- lordzelo, on 04/29/2008, -4/+13FLDS(Polygimists) are not Mormons. They are far from the mainstream Mormon(LDS) church that exists today. Get your facts straight. Yes, Mormons did practice polygamy, but the church abolished it in the 1800's.
I have some Mormon friends and they are most definatly Monogymous and are some of the nicest most law abiding people I know. They would never make children do these kinds of things. - EarlOfLade, on 04/29/2008, -1/+10I'm sure you are not just talking out of your ass based on your own religious delirium but based upon solid evidence that you can present?
- dastardlydud, on 04/29/2008, -5/+13DUMBASS!!!
- Alreadyinuse99, on 04/29/2008, -0/+8Is a 13 year old psychologically mature enough to make a "consensual" decision regarding marriage? I don't think so. But that's just my opinion. The problem that I have with this is that it seems that most often, the girls are told whom they are going to marry and have no say in the issue. That's not consensual sex, that's rape.
- ashfish, on 04/29/2008, -0/+8Because the men are very carefully keeping their faces out of the media for exactly that reason. That's why we've only been seeing the women coming out asking to be reunited with their kids. What I want to know is how many adults were at this compound and why the mothers haven't been arrested for facilitating rape.
- mrkmrk, on 04/29/2008, -0/+8Ha. Different, like pedophiles and rapists.
Being different is no reason to be left alone, if you're infringing upon other peoples' basic human rights. - redwave, on 04/29/2008, -1/+9And we need a _film_ to be chilled by this group?
- Lone1, on 04/29/2008, -3/+10them darn women with their fancy woman channels always talking stuff that ain't true anyway it be better if they just try to get along and not be saying so much.
- cobbwobbles, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7It really makes me sad to see them, so psychologically damaged that they can't see a helping hand outstreched. I hope they find freedom, and peace. None of them are fit to be parents.
- Alli3388, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7You know, this exact same thing is going completely unchecked in Bountiful, BC, Canada, if you didn't already know. The law hasn't been able to do anything, though they've tried, because since all the raped children are brainwashed and convinced they'll go to hell if they don't live with this abuse, authorities can't find anyone who will testify against any of the men in the community who have raped all the girls. Everyone up here is hoping hard that some woman sees the light and manages to escape the community and tells all so we can shut down that colony of pedophiles and mothers who facilitate the rape of their daughters, and allow their children to be forbidden from attending school past a grade 8 level. Sickening.
- Suricou, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7Kept isolated by stories of how dangerous the outside world is... even taught to avoid the color red. The coincidences are interesting.
- dschrute, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7I'd rather our government put people in jail who rape 13 year old girls. Fortunately, more people in America agree with me than with you.
- lukeydukey, on 04/29/2008, -1/+8Wow, you must be new to digg.
- DaneArden, on 04/29/2008, -2/+9I was always taught polygamy was against the bible for Christians.
Matthew 6:24
"No man can serve two masters" - kanabiis, on 04/29/2008, -1/+8In the FLDS world, Red is reserved only for Jesus, and clothing with the color red should not be worn or seen. This is very indoctrinated in these poor childrens minds causing them distress and anxiety.
http://cbs5.com/national/polygamy.kids.seized.2.70 ... - Kallius, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7I just wonder if this will cause as much general uproar from both the public and the media as those pictures of Miley Cyrus?
Oh, silly me, I forgot about the mindset of the general population. - cobbwobbles, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7The leaders of this cult are being demonized because they are oppressing and abusing women and children. Period.
- Adamande, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7So in your opinion, blacks are not to be trusted when they talk about oppression of blacks? Christians are not to be trusted on the issue "oppression of Christians" and elderly people should not be believed when they point to unfair treatment of the elderly? That's madness right there. Why don't you think women can discuss or disclose oppression of other women without the information being somehow unreliable? I'm almost willing to bet you have an agenda with that comment, and it's not to help victims of abusive religious sects...
- arcticsoft, on 04/29/2008, -2/+9Thanks for pointing that out. Im Mormon and what the FLDS are doing is wacked out. Im not down on them cause of polygamy, but the underage rape and slavery. I personally am against polygamy, seriously, I have trouble enough with one wife, why would i want another?
- withincontext, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6They follow the Book of Mormon. *shrug*
- ashfish, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5You're confusing consensual sexual relationships with the rape of young girls.
- quakken, on 04/29/2008, -4/+9they do practice a bastardization of mormonism, so they are technically "mormons" but they should never ever be confused with the true mormons, the LDS.
- carpespasm, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5I'd also like to see the count of teen girls impregnated by close relatives and men 10+ years their senior in the FLDS church VS the general public. Teen pregnancy might be somewhat common, but I'll bet teen pregnancy from 40 year old men isn't.
- Suricou, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5Because they don't go to jail without a trial, and the trial is going to take a *long* time. Imagine a trial with four hundred lawyers... and that is just the custody battle.
- dschrute, on 04/29/2008, -0/+599% of our society would agree that a 13 year old is not able to give their consent for much of anything.
- downneck, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5well said
- cobbwobbles, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5I agree, it is shocking and horrible that this happened in the USA, these women are being physically and psychologically abused, as are the children, and in this case, I'm glad the government stepped in and put a stop to it.
- Suricou, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5No, it's only spam if it's repeated. I posted it once. This is merely shameless self-promotion, in the hope of getting my submission the diggs it needs to go front-page so that many more people will read that BBC article. But not spam.
- carpespasm, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5DING DING DING! WE HAVE A WINNER!
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -1/+6Those crazy women - always thinking with their emotions... now off to war like a "real man"...
- MScrip, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5You are so wrong on so many levels. She married Billy Smith at the age of 17. Billy was 16.
In 1994, Smith, 26, and Marshall, 89, married in Houston.
Anna Nicole might have been young when she married the first time, be SHE decided to get married... not some creepy cult forcing her to get married.
The argument isn't with the "marriages" inside the FLDS... it's the teen pregnancies cause by uncles ***** their nieces! - carpespasm, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5a state of mind where you're never allowed to be educated of the outside world and where you're taught from birth that the church has a soothsayer who speaks through revelation directly from the creator of the universe. It's hard to resist when you don't have a clue what's in the outside world and all you've been told is that it's the devil's way.
- ashfish, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5Brainwashing, its the only way.
- shouldnot, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5on what kind of state of mind could accept to be a part of such thing.. strange world we live in
- carpespasm, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5Where does the red thing come from?
- eir574, on 04/29/2008, -1/+5Frankly, the irony there is quite funny.
