- xack10, on 07/10/2009, -1/+36What the hell is tv?
- curtisag, on 07/10/2009, -0/+23I almost never watch TV anymore, unless it's a DVD or DIVX file. I used to watch the news, but I get my news junkie fix from the internet now.
- str1fe, on 07/10/2009, -0/+20It's like stuff that's streamed online, except you have to pay a lot more for television and it has lots of ads AND THERES NO ADBLOCK
- IronPhreak, on 07/10/2009, -1/+13I seriously have not watched tv in almost a year....too much ***** on tv, i watch all my shows online, get any news online and i just use my tv for dvds, games, and stream stuff across my media server...seriously
Watching stuff on tv is *****...adverts or interruptions from friends on the phone, or family members walking about - AHHHHHHHHHHHH
Watching stuff on the internet...comfort that you can pause and rewind easily (no extra cost) and you can watch it when (and where) ever you like as many times as you like...and if there are any adverts there only 30 seconds.. - ilovemyimac, on 07/10/2009, -0/+11This is technology evolution in action.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -1/+10its not replacing, has replaced. a long long time ago. i love pausing my content, I dont mind the 1 advert I get served. I love on demand tv. yeah i could ge virgin and a tivo but why bother, an extra fiver on my monthly net costs for the unlimited package and I was sorted. definition keeps getting higher, on average the quality has been higher than arial tv for a few months now, and keeps getting higher.
E4 on demand is the best service ever, pretty much EVERYTHING they ever produced including what they sell on dvd, for free! And shock horror it is self sustaining.
tv isnt dead, but its a defunct and aging model, tv companies should realize this already - ripter, on 07/10/2009, -0/+9I haven't watched T.V. in two years. When I moved I got internet but no T.V.
With Hulu, Bittorrent, and Netflix, I don't miss T.V. for a second. - EndouOuto, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8"The latest data from Nielsen says that 98.8 percent of all video is watched on a TV, with 1.1 percent on the Internet "
Sounds like ***** to me. - waydee, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8The only thing I really watch on television is Top Gear when a new series is running, like now. Attempting to watch anything on a commercial channel just leaves me pissed off though, I can't handle those stupid, loud, obnoxious ads every 15 minutes - anything remotely interesting or worth watching just gets ruined by being split up for advertising.
Why bother with TV when everything you could ever want to see is available online, on demand and ad free? TV can't compete with that. - robbob, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7its called an opportunity cost
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7In other news, people who listen to mp3 players listen to less radio. DVD player owners watch less VHS.
- Soleanthia, on 07/10/2009, -1/+6Heaven forbid it's actually true though.
- louiebaur, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5Good question haven't heard of that in awhile.
- jememy, on 07/10/2009, -2/+7A thirty minute show is something like 8 minutes in commercials? No thanks I'll stick to TPB.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4I only watch Phineas and Ferb on TV. amazing writing for a kids cartoon. the dialogue is also great.
- uberduger, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4And you can't choose when to watch!
(Unless you have something called a... Tivo? But I gave up on TV before I ever got one.) - pagno, on 07/10/2009, -1/+5I occasionally watch 15-30min of Adult Swim (tho always online in-season), but I always watch Stewart/Colbert online. Mostly a scheduling conflict, but as a whole, I turned off the TV in 2000. Post 9/11 coverage was the final straw, and it hasnt relented at all. FEAR! GLAMOUR! *****.
- Xaevier, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4I watch cash cab while I eat dinner...pretty much everything else I watch online.
- namochan, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4Breaking news! 50% of all people, watch less TV than average!
- Majora26, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4Its this service where they show people doing stupid things, but its rly expensive. Don't do it.
- powerphail, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4I haven't watched TV regularly for years, ***** having to schedule my life around entertainment if I want to see anything that I give a ***** about watching. TV's an old and outdated medium IMO.
- CarStan, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3thje internet has so much great content that would never make its way on TV:
Jon Lajoie, The Onion, AngryVideoGameNerd,Zero Punctuation
Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged, CollegeHumor, GuywithGlasses, Cracked.com, etc....
and whats good on non-cable TV: Lost... - Soleanthia, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3The steadily increasing amount of commercials is what turned me off of TV. For instance, I'll be watching an hour long show, there will be commercials, then a small 40 second or so clip of the show will come on, then back to another 3 minutes of commercials. No thank you.
- endisnighe, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3If you want to be bombarded by advertising, lies and distractive news from MSM, TV is great. You can find both real news(from numerous sources) and all the shows you want on Internet when you want it not when they want to give it. Anyone else out there so sick of watching ***** about Michael and all the other crap they try to distract you with and not cover any real news? Where is the news on the 134 billion dollars in bearer bonds or where is the end the Fed on the news-no just more Michael worship.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -1/+4***** TV.
And especially ***** TV without recording. I refuse to watch commercials. - Sylphid15, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3lol TV
- kelmaster1, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3If you're using that logic it's the median not the average. Averages can be skewed...
- Threlly1, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3They'll make it pay-to-view, like going to a movie, or something similar.
I don't buy into this myth that TV will die if advertising fails.
Yes, TV as we have it now will disappear, but something will replace it.
Progress is a wonderful thing. - damack, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2TV is on its way out.
I mean ***** does the average user spend much leisure time anywhere other than Youtube, Facebook and Twitter anymore?
The internet came and practically dominated the computer and now its doing the same to the TV. - RickCarstens, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2who watches TV when you are having a cool Britney video going on internet
- gritta, on 07/10/2009, -1/+380% of online video fans watch more TV??
- RobotBuddha, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2I hadn't thought about it, but I think adult swim is the only thing I miss from tv. I used to really love their little crazy text bumpers.
- str3ama, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1TV is only good for when your computer is broken...and how often does that happen?
I use Hulu and http://www.surfthechannel.com or ninjavideo.net for when I want to catch up on shows, maybe with youtube now and then and then if I want something live like sports http://www.freetubetv.net or http://www.ustream.tv. Who really needs anything more. I can give up the comfort that comes in channel surfing for the nice price tag (read: free) that comes with watching videos online. plus no commercials ...win win. - Chak2007, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1I haven't watched TV in 2 years for the following reasons:
- You keep up with news faster online
- Most major TV channels have moved online
- I can watch all my favorite TV shows online the day after they air...or same day if you torrent
-I pay $40 for just internet, whereas to get cable and internet I would be paying 90-100 or more for HD
Heh I see no reason to use that TV in my room except for DVD's and games. - grantmoore3d, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1It makes me wonder why more TV stations haven't figured out to put their content online, there's a few of them but it's no where near maintstream yet.
- RobotBuddha, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1I think it depends heavily on the age group and demographic. The vast majority of my friends don't have cable anymore. There's really just no point. Back in the day there'd at least be something like the history channel you could count on to have history shows, or scifi with the scifi channel. With the specialty networks having mostly sold out, it's just down to the few shows throughout the whole that are worth actually looking for. And if they are, they can always just be found online.
- waydee, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1It's simple to hook up a laptop, htpc etc. to a television these days. Not everyone who watches stuff they've downloaded or streaming are doing so on their computer monitor.
- uberduger, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1The worst part is that I have to sit through adverts that clearly aren't gonna work on me.
Why the hell would I buy Canesten Duo thrush treatment? I'M A DUDE! - Meocross, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1The TV is nothing more than a centerpiece for the living room now. Screw the broadcast networks and their ads
- Systembomber, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Haven't watched TV since moving to University almost a year ago. No need, BBC iPlayer, Channel4 On Demand does it for me. If it isn't on there, then i'll just download it.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -1/+2Jeesh ford, you're certainly a bitter old person.
The universe *is* the internet.
I'm 30, my partner and I watch 100% of any TV shows from streaming video sites, or downloading.
I pay for my own internet though, tyvm. :) and my own apartment. - rocknog, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1I'm a little surprised that it's only 20%. I'd figure it'd be much higher. I can currently watch just about every show I'd watch if I had cable and then some. A lot of people go on about the convenience factor, but honestly, the main draw for me is just the number of good shows out there.
- huntermcwhite, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1I don't watch regular tv at all. If I want to watch a tv show I will stream it or torrent it, or if they have it, hulu.
- TogTogTogTog, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1It's only 20% for a very simple reason. Here in Australia and in most other countries around the world you can't access things such as Hulu; and Netflix won't send DVDs, they'll only allow streaming. On the whole though, 20% of the world watching more online video then TV when a lot less have access to internet and/or Hulu etc. is quite amazing. Also dugg for the quote "boob tube" :D
- jamesmcjamesmc, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1i have not had cable for 3 years. I get all my tv and film off my computer and netflix (dvd, bluray, netflix streaming on xbox 360). It costs me a quarter of a cable bill, and I can avoid most of the mind numbing junk on there. In fact everytime i go to a hotel or a relatives house and watch tv i am frightened by the crap on there, soul sucking stuff.
anyways..... - inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1I've watched a grand total of ~2 hours of live TV in the past five years. If the BBC got their chip-chip-cheerio heads out of their asses and let non-UK IPs stream their content (namely BBC4) then it'd be even less.
- RobotBuddha, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Not everyone, everyone whose watching habits are being monitored. I'd switch back to cable in a second if my viewing was actually counting to help a show live. But, for the vast majority of us, it's not.
- angelschambers, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1I just bought a router yesterday so I can cancel my cable subscription and use the web through the Wii internet channel. No more loud commercials and shows on the History channel about Life After Humans for me thank you.
- RobotBuddha, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1I'd add Zomblogalypse to that list! No budget, and still better than most anything on tv right now. Plus, zombies!
