BTW, no digg cuz this guy only posted to get referral cred to lower his bill. - Brereton55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BRING TIVO TO CANADA!
- deadlychicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ what are you talking about? Tivo does not add programing- it sits on top of and records what you get now. I do not believe that the current-gen Tivo's record HD though.
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0found my answer...
http://forums.tivo.com/pe/action/forums/displaysinglethread?rootPostID=10116756&returnExpertiseCode= - fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does Tivo offer HD (not counting the normal over the air free HD on major networks).
- violator462, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can't afford NOT to get a TiVo, but I still don't want one... bittorrents for the win!
- Kindred420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+040 hour Tivo $49.99 shipped free
New rebate. Tivo has Series 2 40 hour units on sale for $49.99 after rebate. Free shipping. (Thanks steve)
Some local Costsco's have the 140hour for $199.99 - rebate = $49.99 - LNahid2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd buy one in a second if they were available in Canada. But I guess I'll be sticking with my computer to record tv digitally for a while.

>>Do you have to buy the Tivo service in order to get it schedule recordings based on the time of day?
Yes.
>>Does Tivo work with Digital cable?
Yes. It has an IR attachment that sits on your cable box and sends remote control signals to the box to change the channel. - BDS1400, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Do you have to buy the Tivo service in order to get it schedule recordings based on the time of day?
Does Tivo work with Digital cable?
I can't figure out how it would interface with the cable box to change the channel. - ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im telling you guys, gbpvr is much better....:)
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are HD Tivo's. They'll cost you about $700 though.
- pegisys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have the directivo but I think it would work the same way you would just have to put you access cable card in and it should work, thats if you cable company uses access cards
- lonegeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Building my mythtv box ....working on cleaning up case..then ordering parts in a day or two :)
- yaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dont you still have to pay a subscription?
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have TiVo's and I'm getting more and more ready to switch to MythTV... just gotta convince the wife.
- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just build a mythTV box
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Geezus, and people wonder why TiVo only made it first $1 profit this year..well actually they made $260'000 profit (almost enough for a high end mercedes, nice work Tivo!)
- Itaintrite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A good deal, but hey, I still can't afford to get a tivo. Why? If I buy one, I'll still have to cash out $99+tax, then wait 2-3 months for the rebate if it comes.
- straylightrise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a tivo (got it for free) and I love it...DO THIS
- brettotte1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0too bad ya gotta get their service which will cost ya an arm and a leg to get the rebate.
just get the Time Warner Cable DVR for $4.95/mo and cancel whenever you want - jamsea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah just rub it in my face that I can't get a Tivo in Canada. Oh well I'm going to set up a Myth TV box soon anyway.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"there is an HD tivo - but i've been told the technology it currently uses is likely to become obsolete as new tivos are "around the corner" so to speak."
Yes, direct TV does offer a dual tuner HD tivo now for $299. I have one but I paid alot more. They will be replacing these units with MPEG-4 units next year. But everyone who is a current subscriber will get a free replacement.
Subscription is only $5/month and it's worth it. I had a PC setup as a DVR but this Tivo is so much better. - lowridah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0karamba_kid: mythtv != free.
You need the hardware. Yes, many people have it already. You need the time to setup and configure. Yes, many of you have plenty of time to spare/waste/spend. I would be inclined to setup a mythtv setup myself over a tivo, but please, don't call mythtv free. The software is free, but all other prerequisites are NOT.
Additionally, would you want to give a mythtv setup as a gift? or set an older relative up with one? I sure as hell wouldn't. There area great many reasons to use mythtv, but there are just as many reasons to use a tivo or replaytv.
FWIW, you canadians can search for the famed Tivo backend software and avoid paying for the service....just don't do it if you're in the states, Tivo needs your money. - karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't have a job so I am pretty confident that I can afford not to get a stupid tivo. Besides I would build a mythTV box before I considered buying a tivo because the subscription is where they get all there money from. Why pay money when you can do the same thing for free?
- lament, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0read the fine print guys..
"with a one (1) year tivo® service agreement."

http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=18&threadid=516535 - renfield33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"yea, they will make up whatever costs of rebates in subscriptions. That's the worst part of Tivo, you have to subscribe to record off of TV... doesn't make much sense to me, it's basically a digital VCR. What are we getting from the subscription?"
it is this kind of ridiculous statment that let's me know this guy has never used a TiVo.
do you have to pay for a subscription for tivo? yes.
is it worth it? yes.
the lifetime subscription is less than paying for a mythtv box, plus you know it is just going to work. if my wife wasn't hooked on tivo, i'd probably build a mythtv box, but then she would complain to me if it didn't work right all the time. with tivo, you don't have to worry about it breaking... it just works.
the power of the tivo subscription is that it will automatically record seasons of shows... with absolutely no effort on your part. hence, you never watch live TV, saving yourself time. there is always somethign on that YOU want to watch... and you don't watch the commercials. - zarlwilliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"yes because spending every moment of your life in your bedroom in front of your pc kicks ASS!"
yay for tv-out! (: - HiddenForce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*sigh* Just my freaking luck. After not having access to the DirecTiVo I had a year ago, and after getting fed up with trying to remember to set the VCR to tape what I wanted to see, I finally got a TiVo Series 2 box two weeks ago at Fry's. NOW they come out with this nice rebate and I'm completely ineligible for it (both by date and by retailer). I just can't win. *sigh*
- DarknessGP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea, they will make up whatever costs of rebates in subscriptions. That's the worst part of Tivo, you have to subscribe to record off of TV... doesn't make much sense to me, it's basically a digital VCR. What are we getting from the subscription?

http://revision3.com/systm/mythtv/ - cronos916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can purchase the 40-hour at the Tivo site and get an instant $150 off instead of the rebate. A 12 month subscription is required for the instant and mail in rebates.
- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I loves my mythbox. It's revolutionized my TV watching experience. Sure it cost me a pretty penny, but in the end it was worth it.
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I record stuff using my Powerbook and the Firewire SDK, and a fire wire hard drive - using iRecord - and i can record HD content... for free...

haha! correction...amazon used to have a 40 hour tivo series2 dvr for $99. now you have to shell out $49, instead of getting paid $51 (which i do not believe tivo would have done...even if it meant failing to honor their own rebate), to buy a 40hr tivo s2 dvr. this after "TiVo"(R) either got to amazon and asked *cough*F0rCeD*cough* *cough* them to raise their price, or "TiVo"(R) themselves raised the price for a 40hr tivo s2 dvr. - rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, Comcast's DVR is the best in the market right now. 120GB of storage, integrated dual-tuner, HD recording... You can record two shows *in High Def*, and watch a THIRD one you've already recorded! All for just $10/month (providing you have Comcast, naturally). I loved my ReplayTV, modded it w/a 250GB drive even, but when Comcast came out with the new Motorola unit -- it was a no-brainer.
- MagicMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can afford not to get Tivo as they no longer sell it in the UK!

I can do all of that with my Tivo and it's only $5/month and it has a 250gb hard drive. And I can add an additional hard drive if I want. And the software is better than the Comcast DVR. - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well it's not free...so not everyone can afford it...
- er1ca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there is an update over at pvrblog saying that amazon upped the price to $199, however i checked and it still says $99.99 for the TCD540040 40 hour model.
