- Wisgary, on 03/08/2009, -0/+162OMG! Finally!
Wait, remind me again why I should give a *****. People who have thousands of friends, most of which are people you've met once - or not at all - are pretty much missing the point. - focoguy, on 03/08/2009, -0/+90Wait. There's a limit to your Facebook friends? I don't even really care about half of the 100 people on my Facebook now.
- drewtown, on 03/08/2009, -0/+73Yay, more fake Internet friends!
- macmcraeart, on 03/09/2009, -1/+673 real friends and 4997 morons who pretend they are your friend.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -0/+48Make spammers VERY happy!
- skyfyre, on 03/09/2009, -1/+29Should I feel bad about myself because I had no idea there was a 'maximum' number of friends I could have on Facebook?
- Gareth321, on 03/09/2009, -0/+28People have more than 5000 friends? That's *****. They're ***** lying to themselves.
- j3rm1981, on 03/09/2009, -1/+25I came in here to rant about not giving a *****...but I can't really improve on that.
Love it when someone says it all in the first comment. - W1LS0N, on 03/09/2009, -0/+24What is the current limit?
- venomoushealer, on 03/09/2009, -0/+23Not at all. It only means there is a chance that you're not a total tool.
- Gnovl, on 03/09/2009, -0/+19[generic comment about not knowing there was a limit to facebook.]
- 2Deluxe, on 03/09/2009, -2/+20Instead of being internet-cool and bashing facebook because I'm on Digg all day and don't have any real friends I'll be completely honest
I use facebook regularly, living in a number of cities and working in a couple of different fields keeping in touch with friends can be difficult. Email accounts go unchecked, abandoned, phone numbers change.
That being said I'm no celebrity and keep it to people who are relevant and imporant in my life and seriously the only people that could give a rats ass are celebs, politicians and musicians looking to feign technological relevance.
Also, who the ***** has done everything there is to do on the planet that they're so bored they're reading Mark Zuckerberg's twitter feed? - DaemonNivas, on 03/09/2009, -0/+17Wait for it, waaaait for it ... no, still don't see how is this newsworthy.
- strykstaguy, on 03/09/2009, -0/+14Finally, now I can have hundreds of friends.....maybe people will think I'm important and popular, just like in high school...
....NOT - theblogfather, on 03/08/2009, -0/+14Yes, Finally I can sweep across the entire world unchecked. You will all be my friends soon enough. Dugg!
- Swil, on 03/09/2009, -0/+14This guy will be happy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFKHaFJzUb4 - CrimsonBlur, on 03/09/2009, -0/+13There is a limit? How do you even reach the limit? The only people I see having that many "friends" are celebrities, artists, etc. Maybe that's why they're lifting the limit. If not I think some people need to step away from the computer for a while...
- Optimaximal, on 03/09/2009, -0/+12For every person who complains about something on the internet, there are 10 people who like it.
- DavidTurnbull, on 03/09/2009, -0/+12Only marketers need that many "friends" and they'll just have bots created so they can mass-message their friends. I'll stick to adding people I know in real life.
- chadsmith729, on 03/09/2009, -1/+13Happy birthday macmcraeart!!!1!11! Loved that link you posted on your profile and so agree with your status! Can't believe you joined this group and that group, and oh my hows the family? What have you been up to since we saw each other in a bar about 6 years ago (OMG 6 years now? We are so getting old), and I asked if you are on Facebook and you said yes, and you told me what networks you are in! Take care! Bye!
- unrealmp3, on 03/09/2009, -0/+11I guess they should just make a button "Add everyone as a friend" and take care of all the spam later.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -2/+12Sad that a 31 year old is still participating in a popularity contest.
- Avenger772, on 03/09/2009, -0/+10I don't accept friend requests from people I don't know. I think that dilutes the whole point of the site.
- sfcaptainrob, on 03/09/2009, -0/+9Oh great, we're digging tweets now?
- PhairOh, on 03/09/2009, -1/+10I think every comment thus far is negative. Exactly how did this reach the front page?
- artfuldodga, on 03/09/2009, -0/+8every time i make another friend, i have to remove the person who is of the least importance to me, if you're out there Stacy, sorry, i barely knew you
/s - geekformayor, on 03/09/2009, -1/+8Wait, there is currently a limit on friends on Facebook?
Wait, who the hell cares? - CLShortFuse, on 03/09/2009, -0/+7Hi, random internet person. You share my thoughts exactly. We think alike. Let's be friends on Facebook!
- Zipko, on 03/09/2009, -1/+7same here I didn't realize they had a limit. 5000 friends? I can't imagine getting close to that. If you friended every person you know the name of and have talked to at least once in the past year I still don't think that comes close.
- lead2thehead, on 03/09/2009, -0/+6Has anyone here hit the current limit? I don't care what you say... nobody has more than a couple of hundred friends. The people who have like 700 friends are expanding the definition of friend to mean "every person I've ever met in my life".
- mferrari3, on 03/09/2009, -0/+6Yeah you're right, most of my friends are people in some of my classes that I barely even talk to.
I'd say about 1/10 of Facebook friends are real ones. - waydee, on 03/09/2009, -1/+7blind diggs, "hay digg my story thx guyz" shouts.
- MtheoryX, on 03/09/2009, -0/+5[generic reply asserting that no one has than many real friends anyway]
- KyleMistry, on 03/09/2009, -0/+5I get weary if my list goes over 50. I know I can't give a damn about that many people...hell, I get delete-happy when I even get over 30.
- spider418, on 03/09/2009, -0/+5If a negative comment is left on digg and no one is there to see it, did it really happen?
- protogenxl, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3And now Facebook is Myspace
- MeccaYdna, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4No...you just disappear off their friends list (if they notice it) and if your page is set to private then they can't see your stuff anymore (if they try to look something up).
I go through a "pruning" process every few months, getting rid of the stragglers. - groberts1980, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4Thanks for saying that. I have maybe 30 Facebook friends, all of which I know personally. What's the point of having hundreds or thousands of friends? So you look "popular" to yet more people you don't even know?
- grav3k33p3r, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4Sigh. Imagine the number of burgers we would get for Whopper Sacrifice.
- protodon, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4Oh Great, Friend Whores Rejoice!
- D14852001neko, on 03/09/2009, -1/+5Meh, I only use Facebook so past coworkers and old classmates can find me... I don't see the list as "friends" more like "I was with you once".
- DredPir8Robrts, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4I browse my friends list about once a month or so and if I figure that I haven't spoken to a person in a month or so on FB (with the exception of family members and some close friends) then I remove them from my friends list. I've generally been hovering around the 30 mark, seems pretty healthy to me.
- hawksfan03, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3if that's the reason, they should have some sort of application where you apply for more friends. this will only lead to spammers adding thousands of people. i can't see this applying to more than .01% of legitimate accounts
- venomoushealer, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3Most of the people I'm Facebook friends with I talk to on a regular basis. Those that I don't (but I am still "friends" with) are the type of people that would whine at me with "did you get my friend request!?!?!?!" or "WHYYYY aren't we Facebook friends anymore!?!?"
But I don't think that I've ever even interacted with enough people to put me at the previous limit...Unless it was like. 1000. There is a chance that I have talked to 1000 people in my life time.... - sousademiami, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3It depends on your social circles, I was pretty socially retarded, but I was in marching band in high school and college, and made hundreds of friends there who I spent time with outside of that setting.
I usually only see most of them at weddings and when I go to our college football games to tailgate, but I still see them.
Of course, I had no idea there was a limit, but I can imagine, someone in my place who was more socially capable may reach one.
And now that old people are discovering facebook, family members are making those friend lists grow. - MScrip, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3I'm the same way. I was in band in high school, a dancer in college, and worked at Disney and other theme parks. I've met a lot of people in my day.
I don't personally talk to all 600 people I'm friends with on Facebook... but I see their status updates, and see all the photos that everyone uploads. That alone is better than not hearing anything at all.
I talk, text, e-mail and phone with about a dozen people on a regular basis. But I can "hear" from everyone else through Facebook.
Example: A friend of mine just bought a house. I saw the pictures she uploaded on Facebook. She would never have sent an email to hundreds of people with attached photos of her new house. But, she made an album on Facebook and everyone saw them. I wrote on her Wall "Congrats." She wrote back "Thanks!"
That exchange wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Facebook. I'm fine with it. - Kruse, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3There was a limit?
- CrimsonBlur, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I do agree with you actually, there are people that I work with, business contacts, classmates, people that may not technically "friends" or not anymore. But I have a friend who has over 1000 friends on Facebook and she hasn't said anything about a limit. She's young too. I mean I would say I have a lot of friends and contacts, and I only have 200 on FB right now.
I suppose there will come a point in the future where these services will mature and grow with the users, and over a lifetime you do meet thousands of people you might want to have some type of connection with. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3> "You can 'hear' a lot from people without having to do anything..."
That's not exactly a compelling argument for having lots of people on your friends list. It's like arguing that unfiltered telepathy is actually a *good* thing. - Amshel, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2I have 50 facebook "friends". All of them currently are or have been friends or acquaintances in the past. I don't understand the point of adding people who I've met once at a gathering. I don't want those people to have access to the stuff on my page.
My friends, and only my friends, have access to my writings, my contact info, my education and job info, etc. I've only been on the internet for 11 years, but I would think that more people would acquire a need for some privacy by now.
What they should do instead is add a secondary list. Call it "contacts" or what have you. Nobody has 1,000 friends or acquaintences. Nobody has 500 friends or acquaintances. Anything over 100, or maybe 300 for extremely socially active people, is just people who they've met once or not at all. Additionally, the most privacy that you can get right now for viewing is "friends only". What if these chronic-adders want their actual friends to be able to view something about them, but not their "friends" who they've only met once at a party? Make a second category that isn't "friends". -
