"I work for an astonishingly cool company in the San Francisco Bay area called Linden Lab. Our software, Second Life, is becoming quite popular - mostly because of the amazing content that our residents create in-world. This is, in part at least, related to new features that we add and my work at the moment is focused on embedding the Mozilla® Gecko rendering engine into our client. This will enable lots of very new and exciting content. For instance, it will allow users to access Second Life specific Web pages such as the Lindex Currency exchange directly from within the client - something that had to be hard-coded using our own GUI before. Content and functionality can be shared between our software and the Web. The ability to use pages containing XUL & SVG as well as plain old HTML/CSS/DHTML will allow all sorts of interesting, "in-world applications". Things will really take off when I complete the piece that allows residents to put interactive pages on objects they create in world. As always, we'll be amazed and impressed with what they'll come up with."
"It's not meant to be push the advantages and disadvantages of browsing in 3D although this framework might be useful as a starting point for others who'd like to explore those possibilities." - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ever single person who says this is useless has no idea what the hell they are talking about.
Imagine being able to build interactive content onto walls or other such objects in a video game.
Imagine, just for giggles, a 3d, open source video game that is customizable not only directly by code, textures and such, but also by HTML, CSS, DHTML and so forth as interactive content on walls or objects. There are many powerful and interesting ways this could be used in a video game or other 3d environments.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT BROWSING THE WEB IN 3D! Read the article.
This is about bringing the web and/or its languages into 3d environments. - eclipxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A lot of people are really narrow minded. "WHY WOULD I WANT A 3D BROWSER, STUPID!"
If you take two seconds to read the site (or hell even read the comments - someone was nice enough to copy and paste it for you) you would see this is designed to be used within a 3D environment. In SecondLife, it would be helpful to have a web-browser that could be embedded in the game environment. Since this environment is 3D, you would naturally need a browser than be rendered on a 3D surface.
Just read a bit before posting stupid comments. - digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4its a proof of concept people, RTFP.
nicely done and hope to see someone do something cool with it - marreka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Useless on its own, but good to see this feature is going to be introduced into Second Life.
Way to go Linden Labs. - bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4come on you guys, read between the lines...this is a good start to what's coming. the interface to interact on the web is not always going to be 2d. very very soon we will be interacting over 3d, 3d is a better interface than 2d. these people are starting this feat.

dugg - aka1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For those of you not getting the point:
Putting a Firefox web browser on flag is a great example of arbitrary embedding. Some penny-stock company (Micro something or other?) seems to think this is a big deal, and it is. This is yet another step towards Firefox being on equal footing with IE. - bradthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This gives me wood. I've always wanted to be able to browse on a cube. Think of all that porn!. If you read the FAQ ***** you'll see what it's all about. Double damn digg down here.
- Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can imagine this technology being used to embed real app displays inside of a 3D game. Neat technology, it's just the simple-headed folks in the thread can't seem to wrap their brains around what it could be useful for and immediately say it's useless.
Someone will make something cool with the tech or idea sooner or later. - BryanTheCrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3trogdoor... I agree. Everyone's quick to flame without even reading the article.
- zootm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Really neat.
All the people complaining about it being "useless" and such, it might be an idea to read the *text* of the article, as well as looking at the pictures. :) - BlueLaser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's NOT meant for daily browsing!
The article plainly states that the real purpose is integration of web into Second Life, so peeps in that universe can browse the web from inside the game. - bradthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Errr.. it's here (sort of) - residents are reporting that it works really well.
http://secondlife.com/community/linux-alpha.php - guchdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For people who don't understand! This can add a lot more content to any 3D environment / game whether it's Doom, a mmporg, or a flight simulator. Instead of game programmers trying to design a module from scratch for something like an interactive panel, you can outsource it to web programmers that are better doing these things creating a better gaming experience. The browser does not have to be online it's any web page, and support extra extensions is already there. Imagine walking into arcade and being able to play each arcade game then go over and watch TV. For the game designer because of this it wouldn't be nearly as much effort to do this as before.
- frickindeal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2May not be useful, but it's definitely cool. The scaling is really cool, I would like a Firefox extension that could scale pages like that.
dugg. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Why the hell would I want to distort the ***** out of a website which is meant to be 2d? This is pointless and just proves the point that just because you can use technology for cool eye candy effects it can in fact make things less user friendly and actually hurt the user experience. Screw this I will stick to my regular 2d browser because it actually gives me a better user experience, Am I the only one who now wants to play some KOF on the neo-geo?"
If you want people to read your opinion why not at least read theirs and besides the fact that you obviously didn't read the other comments your opinion might be more worth while if you actually _read_ the article instead of just looking at the pretty shiny pictures. I am sorry for the flaming but I am really seeing digg go down hill. I may just be in a bad mood right now but seriously, how many times have you seen a story dugg by the hundreds when it has been down without a mirror since it hit the front page. If anyone actually reads this please comment, whether you agree or not, so that I know that commenting here isn't completely futile. - segosa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Screenshot: http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/317/ubrowser5ta.png
(notice first story) - BryanTheCrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool proof of concept... Digg++
- Boyblundr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome, i play Secondlife ^_^ this should mean that we finally get our firefox implementation soon... hopefully in the next big update!
pretty freakin' cool, +Digg - ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2RTFA people! This is not a replacement browser!
It's an attempt to embed Firefox into the 3D world of Second Life. The fact that the screenshots show it warping and waving all crazy like is just an simple way to illustrate that it's been made into a texture map. When incorporated into SL, it'll be on a flat 3D surface.
++Digg --Description - Cameleopard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The comments on this article are astounding. Does nobody RTFA? Hell, does nobody even read the other comments?
IT'S...FOR...EMBEDDING...IN...3D...ENVIRONMENTS, specifically Second Life.
You people are teh stoopid. - aquataine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is extraordinarily cool - love seeing Digg on a flag ! Gets a DIGG from me...
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm, yeah...but no!
Useful in as far as embedding Gecko into a standalone application, but completely pointless for the "eye candy".
Get's a digg for embedding. - Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Way cool.
Digg - solaristics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, cool idea. I'd be interested in seeing the functional side of it fleshed out. It would be good to see 3D layout features for multiple browser instances. Also, if the title bar were shown at the top of the inner browser, one could use that as a 3D manipulator in combination with the keyboard. Digg++
- Alkali, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agree
- hcl40u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg for all the clueless morons that digg.com has unfortunately become.
- bradthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been experimenting with this a bit more. It's not just Web pages - you can also do XUL apps - I wonder if SongBird that was released today works. Imagine a free media player that you can embed in video games. Holy ***** yeah! Think of the video game applications for this stuff. I wish there was a Linux version though - I hate having to fire up my Winsucks box just to see it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is really cool. i don't care if it's useless.
- jesusfresh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ZOMG people
its not for 3D browsing, its for putting a browser in a 3D world...aka into a GAME (Second Life). - senfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure how practical this is, but I digg it!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wouldve taken a long time to code, only for such a response...
/me goes back to coding a 7d browser hehehe - severetus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0in the interest of maintaining some global balance, the article is headline uBrowser:Browsing the web in 3d, the screenshots show warped pages on a neutral background so it is not surprising that many readers are confused at the intent of the article's author. To be able to map a browser page to a 3d space seems to me to be a way of encouraging the uptake of VRML and its variants. I don't see how using intemperate language can encourage someone to read a misguided presentation with increased perspicacity.
- nathanstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is everyone asking why? Why do we do anything in life? Why not?
- solaristics, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It looks like it has a ways to go. You might check out
- linapussycat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was made for the game second life to render onto open gl geomotries like it stated. We can build in second life and anyone that plays it gets the point of it :). Its quite tedious to go back and forth between a webpage and the game when we can render it in world :)
- toe_head2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw this on Doug Turner's blog earlyer. cool
- kcmcgruff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love how the Diggfest evolves. Is it going to change how I browse? Not likely, at least not until there are some modifications and useful content to use it with. Is it cool? Oh hell yes. Digged.
- dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0would be cool if there were 3d website....cool however....dugg
- kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if that want, they can make this browser like Minority Report screens and then the 3D browser revolution will come ;)
IE8-3D? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But I always thought google Earth was flat?? s'not?
digg for mozilla! - Nyfeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg for innovation, at least...
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, I just read this page at a 35° angle.
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That was interesting. Cool, I guess, but totally pointless (for me at least)... and yet still cool.
Kept me entertained *shrugs*.
I'd hate to browse like that though. - DiamondDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't Gamespot or someone try something like this a few years back??
- dylanA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think its cool. and i will be downloading this when i get home
- pipit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool :) I blog it :)
- Shaunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe its useless, but its still awesome. web pages look cool as a flag ;)
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg for Google Local (fka Google Maps) on a sphere. brings new meaning to the term 'digital globe'...
