- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Almost looks like a painting. Its a shame we didn't have photography earlier. Would have been amazing to be able to see different parts of history.
- LucidParody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's on display at UT-Austin. It's pretty neat, the exhibit they have. Though the picture is barely visible.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2very cool. it just shows you how far photography has come in the last 179 years
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How would the Shroud of Turin be a photograph? its more of a "rubbing". Just like if I took a piece of paper and a crayon and rubbed it up against the bark of a tree, I wouldn't consider that a photograph, nor would I consider the Shroud of Turin one.
- cainrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gregd, I was just about to say that. It doesn't specifically state Da Vinci in the Paper but results of using chemicals that could have been found in the times: http://www.shroud.com/pdfs/orvieto.pdf

the actual plate - pyrokinetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember this from my high school photography class. It was called "The View from my Window"
- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can certainly understand how someone with the name "jesusphreak" would be the first to dispute the claims that the Shroud of Turin is nothing more than an elaborate hoax (or photograph if you will). Here is but one breakdown of the methodology that could have been used to create the "shroud":
http://dsc.discovery.com/news/briefs/20050228/shroud.html - tikibangout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, amazing. We've evolved so much in such little time, I can't image what everything is gonna be like in another 200 years.
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this photograph come in better quality? BAD LINK!!!! REPORT!!
Just kidding, thats High def! - JDOG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Meh, it's not even a megapixel!
- solidus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OLD.
Yeah, it's old.
... - nevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0crazy
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They need to like..Photoshop that stuff...nothing a little color saturation and brightness couldn't fix.
- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As well as the excellent link that cainrok provided...
- diggDoug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow that looks like *****! Why show a historic photo in crappy, low res, over-compressed JPEG?
Photography has come a long way, but you can't tell by looking at that garbage. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Digg has died.
- robox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the original at the university of texas is incredibly faded but still pretty spectacular.
- DarkJosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great find! That is very interesting, I wish photography was invented earlier...that would be even more interesting
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea, i saw that thing on the national geographic channel(or the history channel) about how that shroud of turin is actually a photo. so technically that would mean that the shroud would b the first photo.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>>>> I can certainly understand how someone with the name "jesusphreak" would be the first to dispute the claims that the Shroud of Turin is nothing more than an elaborate hoax (or photograph if you will). Huh?
I never said the shroud wasn't a hoax. As a matter of fact, I do think its a hoax. I just said that it isn't technically a "photograph".
So go rant and rave elsewhere. Thanks :) - poppopfizzfizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That pic is so old Jesus had it in wallet size! HA!
- lashanza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty Cool Stuff

The shroud of turin is a fake. Its been proven. It was concocted around 1100 AD. by the roman catholic church. - rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So the French invented photography huh? The next thing you'll tell me is that they invented movies and flying in airplanes too... That's just Anti-American! Everyone knows that Americans invented every modern technology!
(*Tongue in cheek) - LNahid2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, it looks pixelated
- ambrosis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey whingers, a higher quality image can be found here:
http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/byorg/abbey/an/an26/an26-3/an26-3a.jpg
It's called a "google image search". Very handy, try it sometime. - nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OLD!
*i kid* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont buy it
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ugh, high res please? those jerks :(
- WillyWonka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The JPEG compression on that image is terrible. :P
- chucklarge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>How would the Shroud of Turin be a photograph? its more of a "rubbing". Just like if I >took a piece of paper and a crayon and rubbed it up against the bark of a tree, I >wouldn't consider that a photograph, nor would I consider the Shroud of Turin one.
The Shroud is not a 'rubbing'. If you place a sheet over your face and rub with a crayon, charcoal, or paint over it and lay the sheet flat, the proportions are all exaggerated and won't look at all like the Shroud.
Now, some people believe and there is good evidence that the Shroud was created with a camera obscura and chemicals people discussed above. I seem to recall that there were atleast 3 exposures, the back, the font body, and the face. This makes sense since the height of the front and back image are different and the head is disproportionate to the font body. - zediker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought the 1st one was done around 1805 and it was of an uncrowded street in paris....
- weezerrock86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I thought the 1st one was done around 1805 and it was of an uncrowded street in paris...."
That was a photograph done by Deguarre with his invention the Degaurreotype. The exposure had to be so long that the streets look empty because of the movie people and carriages. - Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jesusphreak
My most humble apologies for implying that you thought the Shroud of Turin was anything other than a hoax. I shall take my ranting and raving elsewhere.... :o) - VijchtiDoodah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From what I've heard, that picture isn't actually the original. It's just a recreation using similar methods, equipment, supplies, and, of course, location because the original never survived.
However, I would like to hear someone either back me up or shoot me down on this one... - fastfood15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if it took 8 hours, then why are the shadows so perfect?!?!?! wouldnt they be all blurred and *****?
- shamanking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok......
- Spawnofbill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The shadow's aren't perfect, they're far from it. They read like there are a ton of different light sources, the reason being is that there's no way you can tell what the light source is from the photograph, since it took so long.
P.S. I'm a photographer, knew about this one, and yes, it did take 8 hours. - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is that a man with a rifle in the book depository building?
- eloi.wells, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I seem to recall hearing that this wasn't the "first" photograph, so much as it is the "oldest surviving" photograph. I can't be bothered to find any evidence though. Digg it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Interesting to think about how far technology has come in under 200 years. amazing really

Sarcasm. Is sneering, jesting, or mocking a person, situation or thing. It is often used in a humorous or ironical manner and is expressed through vocal intonations such as over-emphasizing the actual statement or particular words. - bunkka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0how crappy. i dugg it. :D
- bunkka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0what a bad photograph. i dugg it.
