- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -0/+45You can also use Bittorrent on dial-up.... doesn't mean you should.
- anks329, on 10/11/2007, -5/+43The idea of an iTorrent sounds good in theory, but I doubt it will be very useful while running over AT&T's EDGE network. If it were running over the Wi-Fi, it would eat up the battery...
- melmyfinger, on 10/11/2007, -2/+34Plus AT&T will be implementing anti-piracy stuff on their networks
- noPCtoday, on 10/11/2007, -9/+36I IZ IN UR iFONEZ DL MOVIEZ
KTHXBY
O NOSE! DA RIAA IZ TRAKZ UR iFONEZ - uncleLeo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12can we _please_please_please_ keep iphone stories in the apple section? thank you :)
- NoOneButMe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11So.. this is in the same category as everything else - Sure, it could be done, _when_ there's a toolkit and the iphone is fully hacked.
How's this news? - insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10uTorrent has a webui. Just find out a way to transfer files from your home pc, and your set. Download everything on your home connection, therefore the iphone's battery isn't wasted on running utorrent. Then transfer the file from your pc to your iphone. It will be just as fast since edge is so slow.
- PiGuy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Windows Mobile + uTorrent Web UI + Windows MCE + Slingbox Mobile Player "FTW"
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9How is this going to work when the iPhone has no visible filesystem?
- LANjackal, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I see this being more applicable for collaboration and document sharing among iPhone users in close range. Consider a situation in which one user has a giant Powerpoint file for a presentation and needs to share it with the others. A BitTorrent-like system would simplify and shorten the process of getting the file to all of them. And all without touching email, either.
Of course, given that providers prefer to monetize any data transfer whatsoever, it's not likely they'd allow this to happen :(. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6BitTorrent does not necessarily mean piracy. I don't pirate, but I use BitTorrent to save people bandwidth costs. Linux distros and some podcasts are good examples of this, and I think some game companies also make video game demos available through BitTorrent.
- jebaird, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6i have had WinMobile Torrent on my utstarcom 6700 for a while, i thought i would use it, i dont.
- osmaker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6The time for BT in your pocket is already here.
I've had BitTorrent support on my Windows Mobile phone for a long time. - sn00kie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Don't mean to kill the mood.... As mentioned earlier on a previous digg story, data rates aren't unlimited. You will get charged if you go over some set amount....
http://digg.com/apple/What_s_Hidden_in_the_iPhone_s_Fine_Print - GoldYoshi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Exactly...wouldn't it just be easier to remote control utorrent or something with the iPhone, while uTorrent is on your home PC? Buried as lame.
- b05q, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3how could use a bitorrent client on a system with no file browser?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Shhhhh you're going to ruin it for the mactards.
They want to believe they are the first to do everything.
But a valid question, is how you will get it off your iphone if there is no viewable file system on it?
Oh and yeah we also have P2P programs for Windows Mobile as well ;-) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Who cares?
- stupergenius, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Bad example. The source phone would actually be transmitting X copies of the file instead of just one using an email approach, assuming all the phones wanted the same file simultaneously.
- aelias, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3If you think AT+T would bat a ***** eyelash over giving customer info to the RIAA, you don't read enough digg.
- mbthompson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Bingo, my thoughts exactly. I'm guessing on the OpenMoko will be able to install uTorrent without a problem, but when your connection sucks (in other words it's really slow) and your storage space is severely limited, it seems like torrents could be a waste of time. Just my two cents.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It was a stupid idea then...and it's a stupid idea now. Congrats.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2keep your apple ***** in the apple section. theres no way a bit torrent client would be a good idea. and i dont want to have seeds that a running over the edge network!!
- kiantech, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3yes, but the battery is sucked up when you are transferring data, not just connected, so with a torrent running you would be transferring data constantly and that would certainly kill your battery life.
- heydigital, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1BitTorrent...on the Edge network? HAHAHA!
- Chicken2nite, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wow that's a pretty simple mock-up picture. That iPhone has Windows! Seriously though, iTunes should be the one with bit torrent, and so if the iPhone has iTunes, then vicariously it would have it too. If everyone would seed until there was a 1:1 ratio, the server at the top of the seed network would be under less strain than if it were simply uploading to all and thus the barrier of entry to people looking to put out an independent podcast would be lessened while also maintaining ease of use for the average person who doesn't understand how to set up a router. That is, if they had an apple router that would automate the setup.
- rohanch, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Carrying a torrent client "in your pocket" is already possible if you have any Windows Mobile device. You can just use Winmobile Torrent. It's a real torrent client, not just an interface. I don't see why anyone would though. That's one the advantages of having a WM device instead of an iPhone - people can actually write software for it!
Failing that (and much more sensibly) use the uTorrent webui thing. - brwright, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The RIAA is going to be in My Circle
- lengau, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3You're right. Using the WebUI of KTorrent, µTorrent, Azureus, or whatever other Bittorrent client (yes, there are more than just µTorrent that have webUIs) would make more sense. But this isn't about making sense. This is about someone saying "Hey look! If the iPhone supported 3rs party apps, we could make (insert 3rd party app) for it!
- toosas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2the japanese/koreans and even europeans are laughing at statements like that, i live in uk and have had a torrent client for ages for my pda phone and you talk about this like it something completely new. *slaps* U.S.
WAKE UP! - tetsura, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1what's the point? why not just control your torrent client on your home pc from a web interface on your phone instead? totally useless
- myshoeshurt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2our only hope is that all cafe's and other various wifi points turn off their firewalls so this can actually be of any use
- dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd be amazed if someone hasn't made an interface to let the uTorrent WebUI display nicely on the iPhone (Since it can be changed by a CSS file in the webui.zip archive..), or something using the Azereus XML plugin interface..
- dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"who the hell is going to use BT on dialup edge speeds?"
"Using EDGE is a lot slower, about 30k/sec max."
Have people forgotten exactly how bad dial up? If I had gotten 30KB/s on dial-up I would have been extremely happy - The most I ever got was around 2KB/s download.. - zezerik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0FirehedFanBoy
- theantidote, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'd prefer just to be able to access something like uTorrent's webUI on my iPhone and being able to add new torrents to download to my machine at home. That way I can download the latest Entourage at work and watch it as soon as I get home.
- scootinger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1It's not the US; it's just stupid people (everywhere) who always assume that if Apple does something they are the first to do it!
- mirunit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1A bittorrent client already exist on symbian.
- zezerik, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Is there a digg setting that can remove any trace of anything iPhone? PLEEEEASE?????
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Damn, that's a fanboi for sure.
- h4mx0r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Uh, wasn't there an article within the past week about AT&T giving a little ground to riaa/mpaa?
- scootinger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Absolutely nothing new. Windows Mobile PDAs (and PDA phones) have had BitTorrent apps available for a while now. And I don't think that the iPhone would be an ideal platform for a BitTorrent app; it doesn't have 3G and you can't even build apps for it yet!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1WHAT THE *****? getting closer to having bit torrent in your phone? ive had WMtorrent on my PDA phone from 2.5 years ago you idiots! ITS NOTHING NEW
the iphone is so far behind they will never catch up at this rate, also BT on EDGE is like BT on dialup, WTF would you? most WM devices are 3G, it makes sense to have BT on broadband speeds - jashsayani, on 03/13/2008, -0/+0How do you get this on the iPhone? Can it be installed through Installer? Pls post the Installer source.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1No. However, there was one about AT&T bending over a table and spreading lube all over their ass in advance of an RIAA/MPAA meeting. Oh, maybe that was the same article.
- tatltat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I don't know if this ever happened to you... but I just got an email that says "Claim of Copyright Infringement" from comcast. I'm too scared to put this on my iPhone. Take away my towers, but please god don't take away my iPhone.
- GirSaysDoom13, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Not to be an I-told-you-so kind of jerk here, but I'd like to point out (not that anybody remembers) that I suggeted this idea near when the iPhone was first announced, and got dugg down and made fun of. Looks at me now! I'm on top of the world!
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Not clicking on it?
- Scribblargh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I have a fileserver (Just my old PC with vanila XP on it)
I installed uTorrent, set it to load on boot, installed VNC, AVG
Installed the web based uTorrent client addon thing, and I just use that. - Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Jesus, it's not THAT bad. I was expecting it to be unusably slow going by all the comments around the pre-iPhone hype. Sure, it's not a cable connection, but it's not dial-up either.
