- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23They need to just make a 0g version that only plays media. I've already got a phone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Yeah...because Cingular/AT&T would go for that.
- pwallroth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17iPhone to be upgraded to "real" in 2007
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19China is claiming 4g already. When will apple catch up?
- MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11When there is a 4G network available for more than 3%* of it customers?
*Out of my ass 23/02/2007. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12There is no need for any theory of the iPhone hopping along over the network at great speed as this article surmises; it already support WiFi which is way faster than 3G anyway!
The article notes this is for Sweden, and is really not a story - Apple already said the iPhone would change for other markets in ways that make sense. For the US from a coverage standpoint, I would far rather have a phone that supported Edge than 3G because 3G is simply not in all metro markets, even some very large ones (not just talking about the ouskirts). So I don't need it making the device larger or more expensive or drawing more battery.
When 3G coverage in the US becomes good enough (or some other high-speed technology becomes widely deployed enough) we'll see an iPhone that makes use of it in the US.
For those that simply must have 3G in an iPhone here, perhaps you could buy the Swedish model and use it with Cingular here. After all, it's all GSM...
For the rest of us, WiFi + Edge provides a much greater degree of network connectivity than WiFi + 3G. I would rather have a phone optimized for network availability than raw speed at all times. - dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Good for you. Would you like a cookie? :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You will never see a removable battery, period.
- ipodsweatshop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"A survey by online market research firm Compete Inc. finds that of the 26% of those who said they're likely to buy an iPhone, only 1% said they'd pay $500 for it."
Yeah, that's 1% of 26% of the people they interviewed. If they talked to 1000 people, only 2.6 would consider an iPhone at $500. It really doesn't scale well to the US population. The announcement that a 3G version is in the works for '08 will kill any chance of this first version selling anything except to fanboys and rich people.
If people won't pay $600 for a PS3 with a spanking new HD movie player built in, you think they'll drop $500 on something they anticipate dropping or losing at some point? Especially when they already dropped a ton on an iPod that holds 60GB instead of 8. - TheJas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6BURIED INACCURATE! This is a rumor and I quote...
"AppleInsider is reporting that a Swedish carrier is reassuring a large client"
That doesn't prove anything and you deleted the question mark off the headline. What an iphone digg whore. It's a RUMOR. - MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@broomett
If they open the platform (at all), then we could see skype support. AT&T shouldn't have any say. Of course, that is a big "if." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Will the iPhone even EXIST in 2008? Or will it have gone the way of the iPod HiFi?
- ErinIsADrunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4maybe by then I'll be able to afford the damn thing.
- eggo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3since you care so little about $500, care to shoot me some cash?
- gyroscopic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Rumor has it there's an iPhone ad during the Oscars Sunday night...
http://digg.com/apple/Apple_to_advertise_iPhone_during_Oscars - spatznick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I heard the same about Superbowl ad. Nothing happened.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Broomett:
In many areas, I'm pretty sure these things will go like "hot cakes" too. It clearly won't be universal, but didn't you hear? This is the "Jesus" phone! Moreover, if every Mac zealot on the planet with a credit card goes out an nabs this latest magnum opus from Apple, it will be "hot cakes". I'm sure this won't be the next "Snakes on a Plane". There's a reason why there are websites dedicated to "first adopters" and why Apple has been on the forefront of the "Unboxing" craze. There's a troop of "naysayers" about the iPhone that don't seem to have a good grasp of exactly what the value proposition is with the iPhone. Basic math, type stuff. It amazes me.
For these people I have two challenges. The first one is simple, the second is more sophisticated.
#1.) Go searching for the LOWEST PRICED cell phone that simply has 3 features of the iPhone: 1.) Wi-Fi internet browsing (802.11 b/g/ or n), 2.) a wide touchscreen LCD (somewhere within 20 pixels of 480x320), 3.) 2 MP camera or higher. Come back and tell us what you find. Just... y'know, show the price and everything (RETAIL... not eBay).
#2.) Everyone saying that Apple is "charging a premium" should really put up or shut-up... If you can actually find the above phone (I haven't)... then, for bonus points, show me a phone with EXACTLY the same features and costs a lot less (RETAIL). Just so we're clear, I'll let you off the hook for everything except the following: 480x320 screen, music player with album art, cell phone, Calender /w Outlook appointment syncing, doubles as a USB drive, calculator, full Internet browser (not simply WAP), HTML e-mail /w attachments, 2 MP camera, Google Maps, World Clock, Weather, optional FM radio, optional dictation/voice recording, optional FM transmitter for music, optional TV connector (for showing videos on television). That's it. We'll ignore all the other iPod accessories.
Assuming other phones will support visual voicemail when Crossbow is released, I'll leave that off (along with running OS X and unannounced items like game support, etc). - MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bet we'll see one by fall. I hope, anyway.
- MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thank you for most eloquently saying what I have been too lazy to. Where I live, you can walk 50 meters without stubbing your toe on a Wi-Fi network. But there is no 3G support at all. I don't live in a small town either (pop. 100,000+).
- ericdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why do we need ATT or Cingular? How about some google wimax + skype.
- MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Really? I've always really liked Safari. Firefox is great on Windows and Linux (especially Linux), but its OS X performance left a lot to be desired. It always seemed kind of bloated. Is version 2 better? I haven't tried since 1.5-ish.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In mobile telephony, third-generation protocols support much higher data rates, measured in Mbps, intended for applications other than voice. 3G networks trials started in Japan in 2001. 3G networks are expected to be starting in Europe and part of Asia/Pacific by 2002, and in the US later. 3G will support bandwidth-hungry applications such as full-motion video, video-conferencing and full Internet access. www.3gpp.org
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Once upon a time I was excited about getting a phone with wi-fi. Then I got one, and let me tell you it's not as great as you think.
1. Cellular access (2G or 3G) is an always on technology
2. If you leave wi-fi on all the time kiss your battery life goodbye.
3. If you leave wi-fi deactivated speed gains for most tasks are negated by time spent connecting/disconnecting.
4. Personally I find that almost anywhere I have a wi-fi connection (home, office, motels on trips) I also have a computer.
I never use wi-fi when I've got an EV-DO network available. I almost never use it even when I'm on 1xRTT, unless I'm going to be doing a fair amount of browsing (unusual on a phone) and I don't give a damn about the battery life. My work pays for my phone and I have "unlimited" Internet--If I had metered bandwidth that would change the equation some. - uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3they haven't even put the thing out and it's already obsolete. Apple knows how to squeeze cash out of its fanboys.
- xoineg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22008
A slimer iPhone, 16 or 20GB of flash memory, more battery power, more apps, and a truck load of accessories. The Wifi takes care of the slow networks. If anyone wants 4G or anything new then if you live in the US better sit down and wait. Unless, apple decides to launch their own state of the art network . - aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it should have been designed as a 3G (or 3Gv2) version in the first place. For the most "advanced smartphone", its pretty backward. Or is it a feature? ;)
(I still want one though) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You think AT&T didn't think of that, and therefore put it in their agreement that they CAN'T open the platform. (AS if Apple ever would do that anyway.) If you think that Steve Jobs went in and just bullied Cingular into giving him everything he wanted without making concessions himself, you are nuts.
- xoineg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Safari is a great browser, It runs and launches faster than any other browser. If you are looking for "extensions" like firefox, then do a search on google for safari plugins. They even have an adblock for it. :P
- jasonsfakename, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sooo there is now a second generation of a phone that doesn't even really exist in the public market place? You apple fan boys really need to calm down.
- Gargoyle76, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@broomett
Spoken like a true virgin! - spatznick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a move they had to make sooner that we expected. Too many phones have 3G already.
How much extra would it cost to add that in, anyway? - spatznick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, steve jobs will give up his prototype for a live presentation by the host!
- ericdigg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+73G, I hope skype is supported.
- flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1way lame dude
- klepto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It wouldn't matter if it was 3g or 4g, it's not like apple let's you download and install applications that can take advantage of it, i.e. bit torrent clients, ftp clients, etc for large downloads of media. Most of the reason for 3g/4g in an iphone scenario is to download things from their itunes store.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"China is claiming 4g already. When will apple catch up?"
As soon as America has a 4G network. - mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And when in fact it is updated, and is available on Sprint, for less than $500, I will buy one, hands down.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You've gotta be kidding me, 3G... no way!
What a revolution in cellular technology...
/sarcasm
@kenvsryu ----> erm, 2015 - drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the onion perdicted this
http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/apple_hard_at_work_making - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and in other news, Cisco and Apple have settled their trademark dispute. Gee, what a co-incidence. 3G starts to blur the line between a wireless internet device with phone call capabilities and a typical cell phone, something that would have been a real consideration should the trademark dispute have gone to court. If Apple were sued, it would be better for them to be able to argue that the two iPhone products were in different markets, an argument that is much harder to pull off with a 3G phone. Now it is settled, the device does not need to be crippled for legal reasons.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just checked Consumer Reports, and um, looks like Sprint AND Cingular didn't do too well, and Nextel was worse (then proceeding to merge with Sprint). Did I mention I have Sprint and it ain't so hot? Did you actually read this report, mbt, or were you just crossing your fingers that Sprint did great things?
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/cell-phones-service/cell-phone-service-1-07/overview/0107_serve_ov_1.htm
It's good that you've had both plans. Like I said, from experience, my friend's service is better than mine. He's on Cingular, I'm on Sprint, he never loses his signal. I do "ok", but he's raving about how good his service is. CINGULAR. His service was terrible, until he figured out his phone sucked. And in case you missed it, here it comes again, NEITHER of us have more than an anecdote apparently. If you actualy HAD the consumer cell phone report you might be able to give more granular information than "Cingular bad, Sprint good", cause from what it seems, they apparently like Verizon, bubba. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow..when is the last time you have been part if THIS reality? Hot cakes? Have you been payingattention to the complete apathy that has been shown toward the iPhone since about 2 days after it was annoucned?
Remember...the ONLY devide that Apple has ever made that has sold like hotcakes has been the iPod. Everything else has sold like pig snouts. No one is lining up to buy this thing.
Of course, the people who brag about how little money means to them are hte ones that have so little of it they feel the need to lie. People are are well off NEVER talk about it. They don't want people to know. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The poster for this Digg doesn't know what they're talking about. I accidentally dugg this to bookmark it... removing digg now.
#1.) 3G isn't "goodness" its ***** pricey. I've had $200 cell phone bills before on connection charges that went too long (or longer than I'd thought), I'm not going back there... "thank you very much". 3G is not faster than Wi-Fi... fyi.
#2.) Removable battery? You will not see this. I won't explain why. Go do your research (think "Palm"). Next.
#3.) No OPEN Platform. No. Not going to happen. I think people that think an "open platform" is going to mean the difference between a "good" product and a "bad" product, should plan on sitting this out forever. If you screw your head back on, we'll be waiting to party with you. Apple will have third party applications. They will sell them through iTunes as they do their 3rd party games. These apps will all depend on Apple's approval and cooperation. Other apps, like those provided by Google, will run from the web. Other basic capabilities may be accessible through the HTML-ready standard "notes" feature or offline browsing. We'll also need to see where Apple decides to go with its iPhone widget support too. If that's not "open" enough for you, then you'll need create a flow-chart and compare what you can *actually* do on an "open" platform, and what the *reality* of the iPhone is.
It's boring listening to people that don't know what they're talking about. I guess I'll have to just talk to myself if Broomett is in the room. If you've done even the slightest research, you'd know all these points are not even open for discussion. So weird. - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Three words : SafariStand. PithHelmet. Saft.
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't even need to reply to that. You use Cingular, the company with the WORST track record for customer service, dropped calls, and ***** data plans. Nuff said.
BTW, I receive signal where Cingular and Verizon don't, including inside buildings. Suck it. - zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ya, i thought 4G is the new thing...
- hrdcregmer808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When the 3g version comes out I'll get it, right now my Cingular 8525 has 3g support but there is no 3g connections yet so I'll be fine with my Cingular 8525 until the 3g Iphone comes out.
- lutefiski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't we all been living with iPhone 1.0 now for about a month? Sure we haven't been able to touch it ourselves, but many of us have been masturbating (incessantly) about it's release. We'll all start our beloved relationship with the iPhone by using version 1.1 or version 2.
Count me in when it arrives. I'll gladly carry the flock over the river to the next version. That's my role as zealot. - ementis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would love 3G aye, but really the current iPhone does everything i want/need it to do, and I'm going to buy it, because my current nokia sucks.
I'll just upgrade when a 3G one comes out. - LowFuel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm trying to think of why 285 people think this is Digg worthy.
Cant come up with anything...
Maybe we need a general purpose Digg article "Company will upgrade Product in Future", and people can just digg that when they are feeling lonely. -

What is Digg?
