- phildo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Sunsets are photographic sluts - they're quick, easy, and fun, and you really gotta suck to not nail one.
- DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24And they always go down like clockwork.
/sorry - Unicyclelarry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+153. Realize you are using an SLR.
4. Learn that looking at the sun through a telephoto lens is a very bad idea. - infinium, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Excellent attention to details. Some very good idea for beginners and those who are avid photographers and may not take sunsets all the time. These tools are also transferable to other situations.
- HaltingPoint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6twizt, whats your problem? I don't really know much about cameras but love shooting the sunsets out of my apartment window. This tutorial was VERY helpful especially regarding the more technical stuff about shutter and white balance etc. Don't be an elitist prick.
- greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5because, maybe, some of us have a hobby in photography to get away from the PHP we stare at all day?
or, maybe, because photography and the science behind photographic techniques is incredibly cool?
or, more likely, you just don't appreciate anything involving nature? - deut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Here, I'll correct the link for you... :-)

Nice pics btw. - zizzybaloobah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6We had a couple of great sunsets this past weekend (http://flickr.com/photos/zizzy). I liked the photos I took, but now I'm wishing I'd seen this article last Friday!
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tools can't give you skill or competence.
- olegk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you really want to take great photos of sunsets/sunrizes, take a look at this website:
http://www.richardvanhoesel.com/gallery0A/gallery.html
and here's how he did it:
http://web.archive.org/web/20040420233503/www.richardvanhoesel.com/tech.html - finalmillenium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Taking photographs that come out decent is not that big of a deal with the cameras that are coming out these days. But getting great photographs on purpose, now that is hard. This article gives some good advice on that. I Wish my photography professor gave me some info like this.
- bilangew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank god you chose the A-series. I have tried some of these in a Future Shop (~Canadian BestBuy) and works like a charm, in fact it works way better than the SD series which I have one at home.
For example, my SD500 does NOT provide any control over shutter speed and aperture-- everything is controlled by the camera itself. And that truly sucks if you want to get the best out of a camera. Worst even, if I try to get a picture in a darkish area, my picture is automaticly blurred because it tries to compensate with a longer exposition time, which isnt always the best thing to do in a bar for example. - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3twiztedambience, Your DeviantArt page (linked off your profile) is full of boring snapshots like "Stain the sky":
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29872995/
Next time, make sure you know how to walk the walk before you criticize others.
http://peaveygtr.deviantart.com/ - ultralame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good ideas on framing the shot and setting up, but...
I think it would have been better to discuss actually over-ruling the camera's exposure system and dicussing proper exposure. Bracketing is OK (especially with digital cameras) but once you learn how to actually expose the film/sensor, you become a better photographer. - schmidtl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Every summer in arizona about this time fire season starts. This is also when some of the best sunsets of the year are seen. The sun looks amazing when viewed through 100000+ acres of timber smoke.
- CrocHunter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would also suggest shooting in many different exposures and compositing the images into a HDR. I find that's particularly useful when one exposure captures the sky fine with the foreground dark while another captures the foreground fine with the sky blown out.
- blackmath, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This is a nice explanation. I just got a pretty good point n shoot camera, the Canon A530 and it has some of the feautures discussed here.
- EssPii, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Dude, you said that exact comment the last time this site hit the front page.
- timmyallen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1really well done here, very handy.
- EssPii, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3No, its quite easy to take a ***** picture, even with the worlds best camera.
The site has some decent advice, but don't expect to get pictures like they have shown as examples. Those are amazing compositionally and color wise.
http://esspeaphotography.blogspot.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Amazing pictures this guy has,
- Hoogie7Dowser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wasted my time reading the article. Don't make my same mistake.
I'll summarize:
Use a tripod. Plan out your shot. Use different zooms. Use different exposure settings.
Common sense articles should not be on Digg, says I.
- ultralame, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Very good point. In fact, read the first hlf of "The Negative" by Ansel Adams. While it is all about exposing for BW film, 90% of the science behind exposure applies to digital cameras.
- soupnrc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This reminds me of some pics I took while camping the last couples years of some sunsets and sunrises though now that i think about it...

Yea... good times - twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2This article is pretty bad. As I take pictures, I'm rather insulted this page made it to the top of dig - as doing things such as those suggested are really just common sense.
Number one rule to beginners who have a fancy camera which can do most of what is in that article: READ THE MANUAL. If you paid that much for your nice spiffy camera, you might as well read the manual right? Especially if you don't know anything about photography but bought a camera which can do everything.
No digg for this story. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3why take a picture of the sun when you could just go outside and stare directly at it for hours on end?
- doomgoat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0i second the above reply
- Kailash.Nadh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Yeah, I second that.
- soupnrc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0yea, it looks like the guy in one of those pictures is about to tip his boat over... hahah
- lancefisher, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I really like this site. They've made the front page here a couple of times already, but I've subscribed to their RSS feed and I always learn something reading their articles.
- randomvictim, on 10/12/2007, -16/+111. Point camera at sun.
2. Take picture. - DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Because you're curious like a cat?
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1That's why my friends call me whiskers
- twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4If you are a beginner and an 'avid photographer' who finds this article useful - you should consider switching hobbies, or giving out excessive amounts of cash to people who will try to sell you the latest camera trinkets.

- rockforlight, on 10/12/2007, -16/+0I wonder how to take pictures?! OK.

What is Digg?
