- i6koi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11HUGE DUPE. I think Kevin Rose even mentioned this on one of the first tWiTs...back when he was a regular contributer...he called it a 'lifehack'
- leboff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8can you honestly forget "door close and floor number"
- squenix1221, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9i-hacked did an article on this a while ago
http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/186/48/ - rimco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6At my dorm back in college, we found an easier trick... we'd all hold the doors shut when we reached a floor and after a few seconds, it would skip that floor and continue on its way.
- MrC539, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It rarely works. I think it's a feature of most elevators, but it's usually disabled.
- nerdtv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have worked in the elevator industry as an installer, repairman, and serviceman for 8+ years, and have dealt with many different make and models, and I can tell you that i doubt this works for any elevator.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Depending on where in America you live, either 95-100% of the elevators you encounter will be Otis, or relatively 0-5%. Don't know why, but traveling around the country I've noticed this, because this trick isn't exactly new. :-)
- fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6that's why he winked man
- jmnormand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There are codes like this built into most elevators for emergency use. however its different for different manufacturers and models and generally a pretty well guarded secret.
- Kirschey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I live in NYC the city with most elevators in the world, and every time I am in a building I have tried this. The only time it works, is when no one else gets in the elevator.
Here is a tip: the best way to go straight to your floor is to take the freight elevator. - darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8This is genius. Think of the possibilities.
- thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, he did. I distinctly remember that moment, and still do till this day every time I get in an elevator (yes, i still do the "trick")
- ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is awesome! According to the comments @ link, it works on some models, Otis was repeated over and over again. Unfortunately I'm not an elevator expert so I can't say.
I'll try it out sometime soon though :D

I know, I was actually joking but I guess I should apologize for what I said since it got buried. :/
cool - marcME222, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5... would anyone really try to do this when they're riding the elevator other people? think about it -- you're purposely pissing people off that you're sharing a confined space with. it just screams "ass kicking".
- DansFloyd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3old... but very useful.
- whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4d u p e.
Hah I tried this with my dad in an elevator in our hotel near washington DC, it was about a fifteen floor building so I pressed all the buttons but ours, then on the next floor did the trick... IT DIDNT WORK!! Hah that was funny stuff. - Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very old, I'm sure its a dup and has hit the front page before and it dosn't work on that many elevators. My best friend works for one of only two elevator companys in Washington and hes told me it dosn't work on the newer elevators...
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It would be advisable to not hack at the elevator cables.
- adamS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Absolutely, here it is: http://digg.com/technology/Hack_an_Elevator
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This is really old and it's only for certain models.... Blog spam, this guy is just ripping stuff from other web sites and reproducing it on his blog and submitting it.
- Rosamunda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, it is hilarious indeed! I canīt wait to try this.
The sad thing is ... people that do that are not very good neighbours... in fact, they suck at that. - CyberSteve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4i tried this...my uncle told me a while agoo..IT WORKS :-D
- adb22791, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's hilarious. I'm definitely going to have to try that.
- Rasitiln, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet can't wait to try this
- eaasness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But the building I work in only has two floors!
- rookieone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5If it does work... real nice, but i dont really see whats the point on doin this, you're already saving a bunch of time by not using the stairs. ;)
- paulpavlish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in a dorm, and we have really old otis elevators and that hack does not work for me. I remember when Kevin Rose said something on TWIT about it. But for me it doesn't work
- glin007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guess the secrets out. I have been doing this for awhile now.
- p014k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This actually does work on most elevators. I've been doing it for about 5 years now.
- PsyX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really old... it doesn't work on many elevators anymore.
- spartan018, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i would recommend only doing this when your alone or with people going to your floor.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Notice you didn't say programmer anywhere on your list? I can guarantee this does work on new-ish Otis elevators at least.
- joltjake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually, this story is not from my blog.
- thecapitalizt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1College. I know some people that pull this complete douchebag move when their class starts in like 8 minutes, and youre on the 10th floor. Thankfully, I goto a branch campus...
- tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does it work on lifts as well as elevators?
- edysteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yes this works do it all the time when alone in the elevator which is atleast once a day, I personally no that it works on the one at my apparment and at various hotel. Just a little tip: I put the directions on my ipods, just in case I forget. This has been on Digg 3 or 4 times that I no of but for those who are wondering it does work and its kinda cool.
- Daryl209, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There is no way I'm trying that.
I dont want to get stuck in the basement..... - stubbyperson77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the only one I can think of is going past people without stopping
- gamepln1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I found out that this works when the cooling system went down at the datacenter I was working at. However it would only work on the old style OTIS elevators. I tried it on the brand spankin new Thysen Krupp elevators and I found it did not work.
- fiv3isaliv3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd assume this applies when going down as well?
- Yuffie, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7@stoops
who cares about them, it's all about me :) This is a dog eat dog world and you gotta do what you need to do to get to the floor you want as fast as possible. - digx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is old news on digg. In fact, I learned this trick first on digg. I tried it in my DC trip last week and it worked without a hitch. Don't know if it was coincidence or if it was really working but my elevator didn't stop for anyone once. However, this tip has been posted on digg before and was even front page. I'm sure if you search it you'll find it. No digg.
- irishmac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this is so old. no digg.
- rhizome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah, the monthly repost cycle continues.
- pixogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Search people..

Reported. - sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Low Level
- Ozmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doesn't work very often - i have tried this in NYC for the last 4 months and it only works in 3 or 4 buildings!
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2it sometimes works, but it is cool nonetheless.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Not always. An empty staircase is often faster than a busy elevator. Depends on high far you're going.
