- HardwareLust, on 10/11/2007, -0/+32Ebay? Free? Now there's two words that don't often collide in the same sentence. The bait-and-switch to fees will be coming soon if ebay sticks to their normal business plan. I don't think CL has anything to worry about from this lame attempt. There's other free classifieds that have failed or are languishing in obscurity because they just don't have the simplicity and speed of CL. After browsing it for 5 mins, this just smells like a complete failure. Add this one to my list of sites to avoid.
- dani8559, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Wow, apparently the only cities in New Jersey are Newark and Atlantic City. Nevermind the population density higher than India or Japan.
What a dumb idea, eBay. And a dumb name. I hope this dies really soon. They're trying to be "web 2.0-ish" at the sake of usability. The whole reason anyone likes craigslist is that it is usable. - mvanhorn, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23Direct link - http://kijiji.com/
- Chompy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23The difference:
Craiglist: awesome service
eBay: a bunch of ***** - mcm297, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Buried for not having a "casual encounters" section like their competitor has.
- elfuego, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12kijiji's been in Toronto for at least a year or two... posted there once... got zero responses. Same ad on Craigslist: 15-20.
I have my doubts unless there's some big marketing push coming... - mvanhorn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Why would you bury as spam? I have no affiliation with eBay and am not spamming a site of mine, this has been released on the worldwide wire and was even in the NYTimes today. You should learn what burying is for..
- bukkawukka, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Would you like to meet my "curvy" girlfriend? I got her off eBay.
- Yatti420, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Kijiji has been around forever in Canada ;)
- brada33928, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6craigslist will always rule. ***** fujiyami nipon ichi.
- resta6, on 01/12/2009, -0/+5this is going to crash and burn, the reason people use craigslist is not because its free, but because it has a huge community. Ebay's kijiji is no different from hundreds of other classifieds ad sites in that space
Its the typical conundrum of free services. Why should I waste my time posting my ad if noone is going to see it? And why should I go on a website, when there is only a couple of ads there(if you look at the actual kijiji, in newark at least there are 0 ADS)
Also if you guys remember Ebay owns 25% of craigslist, so essentially they are competing wtih themselves. I think they are doing this, to buy craigslist and to make them lower their price somewhat, once kijiji takes off. - macaddct1984, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5http://kijiji.com is almost as confusing as http://slashdot.org
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Dug for an easy-to-remember trade name - Kijijijiji.
- NekoIan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7eBay owns 25% of Craigslist last time I looked...
- Drull, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4So you've been using the net since at least 1997, and you find craigslist hard to use? .. Wow, jebus.
- mcalvink, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think it's great. I've been using Craigslist for over a year and not happy with it. Everything about Craigslist is great except for the Craigslist Community. They have quite a few Nazi Flaggers in my area. The last item I tried selling was flagged six times in a row and removed? I had to use six different emails to repost. It was just a guitar in the Musical Instruments section. Nothing illegal and its just me i am not in the EBay or craigslist business. Just a guy who sells stuff once in awhile. I've had a few family members get flagged and removed also. Turns out if you are selling a similar item cheaper than another person they gang up on you and flag your item till its off the site. So hell yea I am all for the competition!!
- HardwareLust, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3What on earth makes you automatically assume they'll get "the major market share"?? It's not like everything ebay's touched has turned to gold. Other than online auctions, what other market have they become the leader in, especially when they were behind to begin with?
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3eBay owns a big chunk of CraigsList. They're not competing with each other or squaring off with each other. They're collectively capturing as much of the market as they can.
- eponym, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2lol @ the hating, bitching newcomer americans.
As has been stated, Kijiji has been operating in Canada for a long time. At least a year. At first nobody had heard of it, and its listings were few and far between. But over time it has gained in popularity and is now just as good as craigslist is (for a lot of categories anyway). - thomashallock, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I thought eBay owns a significant portion of Craigslist. Why would they want to cannibalize themselves?
- powerofslack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2super weak. no best of, no casual encs, none of the goofy stuff that makes it fun to goof on craigslist when you're bored and leads you back there whenever you need to buy anything- no sense of community, sterile corporate vibe. craigslist layout is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more intuitive to navigate. hope it tanks asap.
- lordterrin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2what a joke. I completely agree with Techlords. Craigslist is the *****. Ebay is just after profit, and people know that. I don't care how much marketing money they throw at it, I will still use craigslist out of anger that someone is trying to invade their space :)
- roadtrippy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Don't you mean "Kijiji is a great site!!!!! A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
- scottmoss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Terrible... If you look at major cities around the US they have NO ads or in some cases 4 or 5. Typical eBay crap...
- gotamd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I'm rooting for Craigslist in this one (even with the partial stake eBay has in it). It sounds like they plan to make Kijiji a pay service once they have a large enough userbase. Craigslist is, for the most part, completely free.
- bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yes, and it's hilarious that people actually dugg you down for pointing that out.
- arcooke, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It clearly says in the article.. "free for now". There will more than likely be a fee eventually.. which is incredibly lame. Screw eBay. Craig runs Craigslist completely free and said in an interview he doesn't plan to turn it into a money maker.
- HabboX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I don't know that Craig's List is the original. Does anyone remember Classifieds2000.com? During the mid 90's it was booming. I think it was bought by Excite.com, but I'm not sure. I just remember that when it got bought, that was the end of a great site. I checked the domain just now and it is some sort of really lame classifieds site with no classifieds on it.
- authors, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Ebay didn't buy Craigslist. Ebay bought a 25% stake in Craigslist in 2004.
- PaulSu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Craigslist don't need to worry about Ebay or Kijiji.............they suck.
- jaybienweb, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Doesn't eBay own a large percentage of craigslist?
- canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2paypal. perhaps you've heard of it?
- kreiach, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"The word Kijiji actually means "village" in Swahili" - Right off the first page of the site.
Here in Ontario, I've used Kijiji 12 times over the past year or two. Each time I had many responses to my posts and sold everything fairly quickly. - EridanMan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Because they do not own a controlling share, and they're probably annoyed that CN refuses to 'capitalize' on craigslist sufficiantly (thus holding down the value of their investment).
I actually heard through the local grape-vine (bay area tech dork) that the only reason CN sold stock to ebay (the only outside share-holder) in the first place was too keep them subdued and out of the competitive market for as long as possible... Definitely rumor material, but It makes sense to me. - akatsuki, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Plus, the last thing a classifieds market needs is fragmentation. I agree that CL has problems, and some of them are major problems (like try posting something with a .info e-mail address or searching nationally), but eBay definitely crossed over to evil a long time ago.
- bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2You are correct sir, as they have for at least a couple of years now. It's pretty embarrassing that it took this many comments for it to be pointed out.
- blackinthmiddle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Well, he doesn't run it COMPLETELY free or else he wouldn't make any money. If your point is that he doesn't maximize his profits with advertising, then you're right. But the 22 person company DOES make money, obviously. They charge money for want ads and such.
What I find interesting is the disdain a lot of you have for a company making money. Yes, it's not cool when large corporations run out mom-and-pops who had great ideas and executed them well. However, this IS America; the dollar drives it and everybody works for it. Because Craig Newman has said, "Yeah, we're making enough" doesn't mean he's not making money! - o0adam0o, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Craigslist FTW!!!
- Dan005, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Hmm, I found Kijiji easier to use, less clutter, easier to read. I like it (Y).
- fsck3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'm currently working on a classifieds application myself to hopefully co-exist with craigslist. I think the name kijiji.com name is terrible from the get go.. I guess Ill see how my app does when it is done and goes online.
- pyabo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0This is weak. You cannot out-Craigslist Craigslist. What is the point? Drive them out of business and then start charging? Who does eBay think they are, Blockbuster?
- Anchoret, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1If they can control spam levels, eBay might have a chance with this.
CraigsList is appallingly spammy & scammy, with incessant abuse ranging from relentless (and prohibited) repeat postings to convincingly fake posts to harvest e-mail addresses and worse. There is no way that users can flag fast enough to keep many of the categories usable -- some local categories here are all (100%) prohibited postings, and relatively few are less than half so. CL's poor abuse filtering is problem #1, and with eBay's more sophisticated technical capabilities they may be able to improve upon it.
But either way, Kijiji is just another resource -- what dummy won't use BOTH of these free local resources if he's selling his stuff or looking for something? - chandrab, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I don't understand what eBay could do to drive people from CraigList to Kijiji....what's the incentive? both are free. I'll stick to what works thank you very much.
- grapeguy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Same problem as Craigslist, too. Say I'm looking for a guitar in Columbus, Cincinnati or Cleveland OH. I have to perform 3 searches on either site.
anyone know of another option for either site? - neojakey, on 04/19/2009, -0/+0I use http://www.connecticutfreeclassified.com/ for posting my free ads. It is a start-up company that has great promise. The site is real simple to use. You should really check it out.. it works great..!
- roadtrippy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Craigslist charges for apartment listings in San Francisco and New York if I remember correctly. It's in the FAQ somewhere.
- jt123, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0the _majority_ of ads on craigslists are free. BUT they do charge for some job postings and rentals, and thats where they make the money to run the rest of the free services.
- scottmoss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1 mazerstar I wouldn't worry there are now a lot of people like Techlords on Digg that have no idea what they are talking about....
- mcnasby, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Essentially you're saying that a site as successful as Craigslist should go out of business?
