- sillygato, on 09/23/2008, -3/+126Some customers just don't want to have a paypal account, whether it be that they're not comfortable putting their bank account information online or whatever reason. Why shouldn't they have that option to mail in their payment if the seller is willing to accept them? That's how eBay operated ENTIRELY before there was such a thing as Paypal!
I'm sick and tired of all of the recent changes (feedback changes, fees, etc); I hope eBay goes down in flames! - JackSchittt, on 09/24/2008, -0/+97After 10 years of use and over 2000 transactions without a problem, I recently closed both my Ebay account and my Paypal account. Recent changes to their policies regarding feedback, along with changes to both their buyer and seller protection have opened them up to all new methods of fraud.
After the changes were put into effect, I sold a cell phone for $100. The buyer used a stolen credit card, so Paypal simply went into my checking account and took the $100 back. I wasn't even notified that anything was wrong until after they conducted their "investigation" (How the hell do you even investigate something without asking one of the two people involved for their side of the story?) and simply took their $100 back.
When I called them up and provided all the information that was supposed to protect me (including tracking number to prove I sent it to a verified address), they told me that it didn't matter and I was out the $100. Their rationale: "someone's got to reimburse the guy who had his CC info stolen."
So basically, I was out $100 and a cell phone. I closed my accounts on the spot.
I refuse to use Ebay or Paypal for anything now. Fraud is more rampant than ever (especially since sellers can't post negative feedback to warn others of possible scammers), and their buyer and seller protections are a joke that aren't worth the paper they aren't even printed on. - prisoner24601, on 09/24/2008, -2/+96I just can't stand PayPal. How dare they demand my checking account information? Who do they think they are? My credit card has never been declined for any purchase I've made with eBay/PayPal, yet they still have the arrogance to cut off my account at $500 of lifetime spending limit until I'm "verified" by giving them a treasure-trove of information that is none of their business.
Have you ever gone into a restaurant or shop and paid with a credit card repeatedly for years and then had the owner come out and say: "We can no longer accept your card until you fill out this form and authorize us to take funds from your checking account. You know, just in case." Goodbye and good riddance. - ibanezdtx120, on 09/23/2008, -4/+76What did the management team go to college for? Doesn't seem like they studied business.

- slapded, on 09/24/2008, -0/+54eBay double dips with paypal. They charge you for everything. F'em
- DeliciousWolf, on 09/23/2008, -2/+52eBay continually moves away from its strong-suit of auctions and toward the Amazon model of consistency, and thus in direct competition with it. If I wanted an 'Amazon experience' I'd shop at Amazon, which I do. The more eBay moves away from its low-cost auction model and towards an Amazon-type model, the less I shop at eBay and the more I shop at Amazon, which does it far better. I gladly sold my eBay shares and bought Amazon shares.
- madwaxer, on 09/23/2008, -4/+54I am not going to use eBay ever again!
when you use their payment method for buying you aren't protected at all when you get screwed!
at least with the VISA payment you can call and report it to get your mullah back. paypal doesn't give two monkey's ball sacks just so long as they get paid. - cl0n3x, on 09/24/2008, -0/+36Most people are also sick of getting screwed by Paypal
- flidge, on 09/23/2008, -2/+37seems to be what happens when a company get so big and so greedy. fingers crossed a viable alternative comes up soon and we can watch the ebay empire crumble
- trevorbadly, on 09/23/2008, -3/+37Forget shooting yourself in the foot, eBay is shooting themselves in the crotch with this one.
- andoru, on 09/24/2008, -1/+31They announced the same policy a few months ago for eBay Australia. There was very much a feeling that they were trying it out here as a test case for the rest of the world. But the Australian government basically told them to ***** off, because this would be in violation of anti-competition laws in Australia.
- aenegeling, on 09/24/2008, -1/+22Ebay recently tried to do this in Australia, and then proceeded to fail.
- prisoner24601, on 09/24/2008, -0/+21My problem is that my checking account number is none of PayPal's business. I'm making a purchase. I don't provide my checking account info to Amazon or any other real-world or online vendor. PayPal is arrogant. Astonishingly arrogant.
I make plenty of purchases at stores where they want to see my ID. Fine. Occasionally one will want to photocopy my ID. NO way. PayPal is the only vendor of ANY type that demands to have my checking account info! ABSOLUTELY NOT! - sockpuppets, on 09/24/2008, -0/+21http://www.paypalsucks.com
- nesagwa, on 09/24/2008, -2/+22Its ACCEPT. There are at least 3 comments on here with "I wont except paypal anymore!"
- DeFex, on 09/24/2008, -0/+20didn't they try this in Australia and they were disallowed by the courts. now we will see which countries really support freedom and which are just there for the corporations.
mind you all the times I sold anything it was paypal only anyways, I wont even take e-cheques. - aaronirwin31, on 09/24/2008, -2/+20After the PayPal people froze a thousand dollars of mine for 6 months because I refused to jump through their endless train of hoops, I quit excepting it as a source of payment. If they expect to force me to use PayPal, they can suck my left nut. Jesus, dealing with those people and being forced to wait them out for 6 feaking months was frustrating! I hate the PayPal side of Ebay; and they can rot in hell, for all I care, if they force me to hate the other half.
- groundlevel1, on 09/24/2008, -0/+18Really? Allow me to impart my sad tale of woe.
I sold an item an eBay and the customer paid through PayPal. He then claimed he never received the item. Despite the fact I could prove that he received the item, PayPal sided with him. I had to send them the following to clear the case: A copy of my original receipt for the goods, my social security number, and a copy of my driver's license. Why all this? Because the item was considered "high risk" -- meaning electronics and a whole slew of other categories, which widen inexplicably every day.
I complained that I had been on eBay for almost 10 years, and had never had a buyer complaint in all that time. No matter. They held the funds anyway.
Then they suddenly reversed the hold -- in his favor! I called PayPal CS, and had to go through several reps until I got all the way up to Executive Escalations. They demanded to know my "business model". They had checked my receipt, but now wanted to know my exact margins of profit on the item. I finally had enough, and calmly told the woman that was far enough, and that it was none of PayPal's business. She said would get back to me.
Boy did she. She called me the next day and coldly informed me that after further consideration, PayPal and eBay were no longer interested in "continuing a business relationship" with me. Despite years of great feedback. And having done nothing wrong to anyone. But here's the best part -- she said the good news was I would no longer be required to provide my business model.
Was that the end...? Ah, but no. They went after me tooth and nail. They "suspended" both my PayPal and eBay accounts. They then wrote emails to every buyer I had any transaction with for the last 6 months(!) and warned that I was "suspected" of fraud -- (note careful language to avoid lawsuit). Some loyal customers of mine actually sent me copies of this email.
Then they wrote me an email saying that all my eBay charges for all those items would be retuned to my bank account because of the suspension. But did they even live up to that promise? Ummmm... take a guess. Not only did they not refund the fees, they went after my bank account to withdraw the remaining owed fees. And finally, when they couldn't get those because I alerted my bank -- well, they sent me to a collection agency.
And why may you ask are they doing all this? A friend of mine who does over 100,000 a year with eBay said it's simple. They will find any excuse to make life hard for and ultimately get rid of small sellers. They just don't want us around.
Oh, and BTW, you may not have seen their latest "Privacy" notice, but aside from forcing you to give them your banking info, ID, and anything else they like if you want to keep doing business or get your funds released, not to mention keeping any logged IP address's you've used on file forever, eBay and PayPal now claim "When you are using our Service, we may collect information about your account transactions and we may collect information about your computer or other access device for fraud prevention purposes. Finally, we may collect additional information from or about you in other ways not specifically described here."
Sorry for the rant, but "PayPal is safe"??
Do you work for them by any chance? - Fizzul, on 09/24/2008, -1/+17When people use stolen cards at any store it's the store who pays and never the credit card company. Credit card companies are legalized loan sharks.
- accurrent, on 09/23/2008, -1/+17They skipped their antitrust classes.
- sockpuppets, on 09/24/2008, -0/+16eBay's sucked ass for years now. It's the suckiest suck that ever sucked. And paypal's arbitrary account freezings have no oversight whatsoever. They can, for any reason take your money without explanation, leaving you to *maybe* get it back in 6 months.
- Markpdotcom, on 09/24/2008, -1/+16I don't know if it would ever happen... Graigslist tries to makes a profit, just like any other company. As would Google Auctions.
The big problem with ebay is their ridiculous fees: They charge for an initial "insertion fee", extra if you want photos, set a reserve etc... then if the auction is a car or some other thing they deem of value, they add on a final fee, slicing a percentage from your total!
And they own paypal, so paypal take a cut when you want to withdraw your own money!
Madness! - Slashered, on 09/24/2008, -3/+18Paypal is terrible, there really needs to be a new mainstream way to transfer money in the US. Maybe google will come out with something?
- monkeyrun, on 09/24/2008, -0/+15In many cases ebay is actually more expensive than Amazon.
- osko2052, on 09/24/2008, -2/+17Ebay stinks. I closed my Ebay store in February and haven't looked back. I don't regret it, not for a minute. I had $50.000.00 in sales in 2007 and was a Powerseller with 100% feedback too. Their loss.
- IllBeBack, on 09/24/2008, -11/+26So what problems do people have with PayPal? I have used PayPal as long as it has been in existence without any problems and literally hundreds of transactions...
eBay is really going too far by forcing its use, however. Pretty stupid move. - Import98, on 09/24/2008, -1/+15eBay sucked for a while now IMO. I remember when you were able to find a bargain, now you're basically paying retail.
Amazon for the win. - woodenturkey, on 09/24/2008, -1/+14oh yea i remember ebay, used them fellers before i went and found me some Craigslist
- Pyehole, on 09/24/2008, -1/+14I'm so torn on deleting my ebay account. I've had it for 10 years now and have built up a 300 or so positive reputation and have sold large groups of stuff I no longer want on it. Not only is it still the best place to sell certain kinds of things I want to get rid of, such as old games, miniatures etc, but I occasionally go looking for stuff on ebay. I'm procrastinating on selling the last of the cruft that has built up over time that I no longer want because I DON'T WANT TO REWARD THEIR ***** UP BUSINESS DECISIONS. Maybe I'll just hold out until something better comes along because right now, it looks like they are opening the door for a competitor.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -1/+14i remember when ebay used to be a place to find such good deals, now those deals are few and far between..mired in mountains of chinese crap. bye bye ebay.
- Crath, on 09/24/2008, -0/+12craigslist is great!
- Ne007, on 09/24/2008, -1/+13fees, fees and more fees!
Let's make it a point to bring down ebay.
Start here:
http://www.craigshelper.com/ - gfxlonghorn, on 09/24/2008, -2/+14Are you crazy? Craigslist annual income is nothing like it would be if they tried to make a profit. It is in the top 15 of most visited sites on the internet, yet its monthly is like 30 million. They charge only for housing listings in certain cities and employment postings. They COULD charge for everything, but they don't. Craigslist is one of the biggest untapped revenue streams on the internet. If they added one picture ad on the front page, they would make a killing.
- RizzoFrank, on 09/24/2008, -0/+12Google Checkout?
- Khast, on 09/24/2008, -0/+12As a seller, I am aware of at least 3 scams which the buyer gets the merchandise, and their money back...thanks to loopholes in Paypal's policy. And with one of the potential scams, the seller can get double dipped....thanks to Paypal accepting credit cards. Paypal is less secure than a western union money transfer (Which eBay says is unsecure.)
Hey, if you live in Brazil, or other countries which the US can't track from.....when the seller tells you that he shipped the item...you file a chargeback on Paypal....you will win 100% of the time, because if you can't provide tracking information, the seller looses all "protection" ...trust me, I've had this one pulled a couple times. - IllBeBack, on 09/24/2008, -1/+12Wow. That's an eye-opener. Thanks for the link.
- adam42069gc, on 09/23/2008, -2/+13What a joke!
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -1/+12ebay couldn't have made craigslist any more attractive than with this move.
what a way to ***** yourself over, - gcnaddict, on 09/24/2008, -0/+11Car buyers.
- prisoner24601, on 09/24/2008, -0/+11When I first discovered PayPal's "verify your account by giving us your checking account information" demand I tried to call them and their phone support is laughable. And OF COURSE (as they well know) this happens AFTER you have bid on and won an eBay auction and now have an *obligation* to complete the transaction which you can't do unless you give in and verify per PayPal's demands.
That's just evil in my mind. You now OWE the seller, have bid on an auction with payment terms that require PayPal, but you didn't know your account just hit the $500 lifetime limit, because they sucker you in and don't make that clear up front, just hide it in the fine print. So you don't want to stiff the seller and/or get bad feedback, but you don't want to verify because your checking account is none of PayPal's business. You're just out of luck and they can make you do things their way. They are unbelievably arrogant. - mogebier, on 09/24/2008, -0/+10I preferred a Postal Money Order because the jerkoff buyers can't lie and get a chargeback like they can on Paypal.
- Nerys, on 09/24/2008, -2/+12This is the USERS fault. When I get paid by paypal I DO NOT SHIP till I have CASH IN HAND. I never have more than $2 or $3 dollars in the bank account.
I simply do not trust paypal. Period. End of Discussion. POWERS of a bank without any of the already minimal PROTECTIONS to protect us against banks powers. - theutopian, on 09/24/2008, -0/+10Won't someone please stand up and start a new Auction site.
Google, I'm looking at you. - Onyxblaze, on 09/24/2008, -1/+11Well, I have a problem with PayPal. It has been stealing my money. I sent money to my friend, in exchange for cash, but amazingly, he never got the money on PayPal. I looked at his transaction history when he was logged on, and it showed nothing. My history showed -$10. I filled out a claim, and they sent me an email almost THREE WEEKS later saying they investigated it, and found nothing wrong. ***** PayPal. I don't know how many times this has gone unnoticed on my transactions. It sure does explain how my account balance dropped so quickly.
- debuggercll, on 09/24/2008, -1/+10In the shadows, hiding behind a crate, waiting for the lights in the house to go dark.
- xjohnmcclanex, on 09/24/2008, -0/+9dude, everyone knows that eBay owns Paypal.
thanks for the news update.
you have any new info on the DC sniper attacks? - Nerys, on 09/24/2008, -0/+9Thats why you do NOT SHIP the item until you have the money as in cash in your hands. "digits" on a computer screen do not count as you clearly discovered.
NEVER leave more than a few dollars $2 or $3 in the account. NOW paypal will still be able to take the money but now they are taking the banks money NOT your money. You simply REFUSE to pay the bank. The bank can still say tough ***** but at least now they are "more likely" to work with you.
If enough people did this paypal would have no choice but to change there ways. -
