- TopDog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16wow.. i thought this was going to be another useless ajax app but when it loaded and I had a play around I was very impressed with the functionality it offers. You would have to look at the screen twice to make sure you were not actually using MS Word... probably a miles better word processing app than crappy wordpad that you get.. allows you to save in the following formats:
MS Word
RTF
Text
PDF
which is pretty impressive.
Especially good for users not at their own PC which might not have MS word installed... even lets you open existing genuine MS word docs as well :) - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Their website is ugly as hell.
- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Its cause IE 6.0 isn't web 2.0 ready. Its more like web 0.2. Time to upgrade to a real browser bub.
- josman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Nice concept... good thing to have in your back pocket when booting from a live CD or a USB thumbdrive. A few more apps like this, and we could be running diskless! (well, except we do need a browser)
- mctk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8So am I, but I get the job done.
- op12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7So do I, especially now that Google acquired it.
- mailman-zero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That's what digg is for... stress-testing online apps better than they ever could be tested in a lab.
- dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Why do they have to put Ajax in the name?
- wicketr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Portable firefox to access your portable Document Editor
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/browsers/portable_firefox - akinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"IE6 is just too damn old to be "Web 2.0" - by several years."
Everyone just accidently forget that IE introduced the XML Http Request object in the first place, which is the main ingredient in this 'Web 2.0' hype. - kev26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, it requires Firefox 1.5:
"We're sorry, but ajaxWrite requires Firefox 1.5 (or higher), running with Javascript enabled."
I'm an avid user of Firefox (except at work, damn those IT bastards) but the real world market share is approx. IE 70% FF 30%
Why would you design a 'killer app' and lockout the majority of the market? - harrisbradley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4never seen the 'Service Temporarily Unavailable' feature in MS Word.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i have high hopes for http://www.writely.com/ but this looks pretty cool
- SenyorDrew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well it certainly emulates one aspect of word .... takes forever to load.
Just kidding. I'll check this out after the digg effect - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's crawling on its knees as we speak.
- honkerdown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I was able to also open an OpenOffice.org formatted .sxw and .odt files, though both ended up as center justified. I hope they will be able to add this bit of functionality, as well as writing those file types as well. Not sure what the business model is or if there is a way it can be license, I can think of several intranet projects I work on that I would like to embed this technology.
- Quarks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a nice app, but i don't think it will replace Word or OO, you can't even compare it.
It's more in the line of WordPad and Notepad.
I wouldn't dare to write a lot of text in an online word processor out of fear of losing it.
Notepad feels more secure. - greener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If your using IE you have to download the "Identify as Firefox plugin".
Just kidding!! - moshisushi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2www.caminobrowser.org !
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Can't compare to Word without Clippy.
- ThePerchik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2becuase write.com was taken, lol.
- anorris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is XUL.
- jarod42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It'd be nice if they did, down the line, offer the online storage of the files created. I'd still like the ability to share documents ala Writely.
- stuntant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's a good start but still has a long way to go to replace Word, or even OO.
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I prefer to code RTF by hand in Notepad.
- angus454, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Umm... pre-pre beta release here, folks. No save / print / or most other basic functions within the app work without java errors right and left. No IE support and non-secure document creation ( no SSL'd site ) makes this a promising, but premature announcement. Give it 6 months to get the bugs out and it will hopefully live up to the potential.
- stevievep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just an aside, this is run by Linspire. Opening the frame based page in a new window goes to http://www.linspire.com/ajaxwrite.php . I had to do this to run it through a javascript bookmarklet bookmark maker.
- bobslaede, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It completely destroyed the layout and pictures in my word docs.
Its just another wysiwyg editor, with a XUL interface, and a crappy parser. - LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if it had support for OpenDocument Format I'd consider using it, but it doesn't...
Writely still kicks ass :D - bugninja, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It crashed Firefox, it was slow, it behaved funny to resizing areas and pressing keys. I don't get it? So we have an inferior application that provides the inconvenience of having to go online. Just download ABI Word if you are truly that desparate for word processing.
In all the years I've been working in web development and software, doing on-site IT, etc, I have NEVER needed a word processor on the fly and online.
I hope they get bought for making a DHTML editor look like an MS app, otherwise it's useless. - smhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting I am sure. (can't load it).
But I am not sure of the advantage of having it online. Unless it includes storage, you already have that tool on any computer you use. Maybe not Word, but textedit, write or some basic word processor. And as others have said, security concerns are there. I am not seeing any kind of privacy policy.
By itself, I don't see much value, but as a component of a larger online productivity suite with storage and good security, it could be a great thing. - Elsan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It asks for Firefox but look like Word... Hmmm...
I just want it to support OpenDocument, then it'd be awesome.
Too bad it doesn't work in Konqueror... :( - the_penguin_boy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finally! A web based writer that doesn't require registration. No more having to remember my stupid password when signing on once in a blue moon!
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Friggin Dupe comment
Everyone just accidently forget that IE introduced the XML Http Request object in the first place, which is the main ingredient in this 'Web 2.0' hype. - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is a nice proof of concept, but FAR from a finished product. Three features I'd need before I could even consider using it ar spell check (particularly of the underline variety), paged view (Like word showing page margins and seperate pages, since AjaxWrite only shows one continuous column of text), word count ("ALT-T,W" is a shortcut I use very often. In both MS Word and OpenOffice it pops up the word count dialog.
Another major issue is saving. If you want to save, it tries to download a file. Why? This is supposedly all client-side, because it is javascript. Does this mean that every time I download a file, instead of hitting "CTRL-S", I have to click on file, save, yes download, select a location, yes overwrite, and so on? - looklikecontest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's down.
- rhawk301, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+digg for easy editing of online data. l I will be taking a serious look here soon.
- ejoyner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am not sure I see the point either. It seems to me most people would have privacy issues with this. Did anyone try opening a local file?
- barnis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1crashed firefox and didn't open either file i tried to open
- embarkadero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1crashed in less than three seconds. nice interface though!
- kev26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The final version WILL support IE and Safari. From their forums:
"Just a sticky note to let everyone know that we ARE going to support both Internet Explorer and Safari when we release the final version, even though we currently only support Firefox.
Firefox is much more Ajax-friendly, and it has been much easier to prototype for it. Also, some of our code requires XUL, which is Firefox-only; we're having to devise work-arounds for other browsers, and those aren't ready yet.
Thanks again for all your input and suggestions on this and other topics. I'm putting this note here so there's no confusion; yes -- we ARE going to support the most popular browser on the Internet, eventually." - razvan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because they want to score on Google for Ajax...duh
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bookmark the following link to load the WordProcessor directly.. No popup window..
http://207.67.194.7/apps/write/content/index.xul?doc=http://207.67.194.7/apps/write/welcome.html&user=&pass=?path=&user=&pass=&doc=http://app.ajaxwrite.com/apps/write/welcome.html - walkingmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the love of me and all things that are holy. We love Apple and Safari, but can we get it to work with these new technologies please!
- rabasolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am all for free web-based office suites. Especially for internet cafes to keep them low cost. Also for schools. Imagine the savings if they avoid the high-cost MS Office. And if apps are web-based, they wouldn't need high-powered workstations.
- webmaster02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sure seems to have OpenDocument support here.
On a side note, doesn't this look alot like XUL? I mean, how else are they getting natively rendered tabs? - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's exactly who this could benefit. A barebones $50 wi-fi client connects to a server and can run the equivalent of MS Office (eventually) and do a host of other things.
In any case, it is an excellent tech demonstration. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alot better than alot of other ajax programs.... but I fail to see how they can compare it to Microsoft Word.
- SpectoriS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is this firefox-only? Or does it work with any Gecko-based browser?
I'm currently using Camino (for many, many reasons that I will not get into here) and it simply doesnt load. I'm assuming its just the combined digg/slashdot effect, but still makes me kinda nervous.
Anyone know the answer to this? - plkrtn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, that works fantastically well. Very impressed.
By the way did anyone notice that the images were coming from a Linspire server? -
