This is crap. I think Sony should be sued for this. - pfdogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That should be illegal. That's ***** ridiculous.
- bookishboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With these types of software, is it possible to simply NOT install the DRM software and still play the music/movies on the disc?
It's beginning to seem that the best bet is to get things from cheap/free sources and damn the copyright considerations, if by buying them legitimately I'd be so closely restricted in how I can use the material. - webguy2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson did a podcast on this, Security Now Episode 9. Quite Interesting.
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SONY - the definition of an EVIL company.
You think they do bad things with CDs and DVDs, you should wait until everyone is using the Blu-Ray format where they wrote the specs!
I think I will be passing on any Sony media, thanks. - m0laria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shouldn't one be able to hold Shift when they put cd in, then just load the audio files into winamp or whatever?
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reminds me of Leo's Tech guy a couple weeks ago where some guys DVD decrypting software quit working because the MPAA got their greasy hands inside his PC. If you play a DVD on your computer it tries to install software that stops these types of programs from workign.
- Nefarious_Denny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This *****'s in the same category as spyware, there should be serious legal ramifications.
- aMillionAndNine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pure evil.
It makes me thankful that 99% of the music I listen to isn't from the huge publishing behemoths pushing out their DRM laden crap. Crap, referring to the music and the DRM.
I did find it interesting that one of the offending discs was christian music. I don't know why but I thought it was funny. - mctsonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a DRM and/or anti-copy software/function on My Morning Jacket's "Z" CD. I'm sure this band is bummed about this because they are a taper/minidisc/DAT friendly band when they tour and I'm sure they realize this will alienate a good number of their fans. They probably have no recourse against their own label for installing this incidious crap on their art. Disgusting. When I play the disk on any of my Linux laptops or desktops it plays fine ... until the end and then there is a horrible racket. Plus I can't loop the disk to play again in KSCD, etc. I'm going to watch carefully what major-label CDs I purchase in the future.
- planticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony sucks donkey dick!
- Tricky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony: THIS TOTALLY SUCKS MAJOR CARTMAN ASS. DON'T EVER DO IT AGAIN.
- nicnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never knew about this because I load CDs on my Mac anyway. Sucks for windows users though.
- murdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The fact that they are putting hidden software on your computer should be EXPLICITLY indicated. Rootkits are the tools of hackers and spammers... shame on you Sony.
...sinner - CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just heard this on Geeknews podcast... its totally f'd up!! Who the hell do Sony think they are?
- .Steven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't people download music of P2P now'erdays?
- ChanEilFhios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@capajc -
1. I doubt they explicitly state in their licensing agreement that they are installing a rootkit.
2. Most users wouldn't know what a rootkit was if they were told.
3. If you're going to go down this path, you sure better be certain you're security is tight.
4. I've heard some reports that seem to indicate that the rootkit is either installed BEFORE the licensing agreement is displayed or even if you don't agree. - paul_c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yet another reason to hate Sony...
- Nemsoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Even if you uninstall the player, the rootkit stays in the system. The system is implemented in a way that makes it possible for viruses (or any other malicious program) to use the rootkit to hide themselves too. This may lead to a situation where the virus remains undetected even if the user has got updated antivirus software installed. "
OMFGIH, and you pay to get screwed like this..... - kevd18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony needs to be hit with a wave of viruses for this. F U Sony.
P.S. - I'm not buying a PS3 you bastards! - YoshoKatana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow...just wow.
- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony blows - I hope the X-Box 360 and Revolution are finally able to beat the crap out of the PS3 even though I can give a damn concerning consoles. When a CEO is so damn arrogant as to come out and say that he can put inferior products in the market place and beat the pants off of his competition through sheer marketing power then I'm not surprised that they would employ underhanded malware installs with ZERO regard for how consumers would actually feel about it.
- Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok good thing that I have not bought any new CD's lately. Mostly just use Itunes which I feel the copy pertection is allowable. But this is just wrong, I can totaly see someone using this root kit for spyaware [Go Firefox]. I bought some Sony CD's in Japan when I was there, but they are older. Though one of them DOES have Copy Pertection but I am not sure how it works or which one, will have to go check that later. but this is just Evil.
+Digg - Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh and Also if you go on to the website for the software they say that it IS compatable with macs.
http://www.xcp-aurora.com/xcp.aspx - thedoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01) Glad my primary machine is a Macintosh.
2) Will certainly make me avoid any Sony-branded CDs.
3) The whole DRM thing is really retarded anyway. We paid for the content. We can do anything we want with it for our own personal use. I would never expect to pay for something on media that I could not back up --- especially when the only option when it breaks is to buy again! No matter how much protection they put on the disk, there will always be the "play-it-in-your-CD-player-and-record-it-via-Line-In-on-your-PC" method when everything else fails. - StuGazzO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The more "the man" pisses me off, the greater my non DRM mediaz collection will grow, and the less my conscience will bother me. I think there's a math formula in that statement somewhere. ;-)
- b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While I agree that rootkits is a f'd up way to go about DRM... how many posting "sony sucks" will still buy a product from them?
And that's why sony doesn't care. - capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This just totally sucks. Because of Sony everyone is now rootkit crazy. And now you're going to find the rootkit that I put on YOUR system last week.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just sent an e-mail to Sony asking them how to remove the rootkit from my (imaginary) CD :)
- DogHumpsMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope what ever bastard thought of this gets boiled potatoes shot up his ass by one of those tennis ball machines until he turns blue.
I use a mac, so it doesn't effect me, but the very idea of this is repellent. - Coder1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is old news.

Digg could be so much better without so many dupes on here. It's getting like Slashdot. Don't people check before they post.
Granted, the link goes to a different location. But i't still the same news. - capajc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0First, Sony sucks for doing this.
Second, why on Earth would anyone click "agree" to something like this on an audio CD? Immediate mental red flags should've gone up as soon as a window like that popped up from an audio CD. If you clicked "agree", then you deserve to have to reinstall your entire system to clean up the mess you _allowed_ to happen. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0i heard this on GNs podcast... i can't believe that sony is doing that.
