- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31I cracked the remaining unsolved cipher. It is:
"Be sure to drink more Ovaltine." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Too bad the Germans didn't know aboout the DMCA back then.
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The cracked cypher:
"Found nothing on convoy's course 55°, [I am] moving to the ordered [naval] square. Position naval square AJ 3995. [wind] south-east [force] 4, sea [state] 3, 10/10 cloudy, [barometer] [10]28 mb [and] rising, fog, visibility 1 nautical mile"
So when are we going to get an interesting one about them bringing people from the dead, or making deals with aliens? - imrcly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14human curiosity, we want to know, even if it was what the captain ate for breakfast, it is a question that has not been answered
- callmejordy265, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Hitler had a good thing going?
scratch that, im going to get banned from Diggs - MrPhelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's amazing to some of these codes remain uncracked after all this years, and are still a challenge even with today's distributed computing.
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I've been running the client for a while now. I wonder if my machine's the one that busted it? That would be soo neat.
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Uhh, it would be Die Juden, because it's plural. Jude would be the singular, and even then, it's masculine, with a "der."
- ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This has to do with how the Enigma machine works, depending on how the machine was setup (with the rotors and switchboards) the messages can be encoded a mind bogglingly large number of ways. You'd have to know how the machine was setup to decode the message.
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, that's because it was a very strong encryption machine. The number of possible keys is larger than the number of predicted protons in the universe. The only way Turing and Rejewski really "cracked" the enigma involved using a piece of ciphertext that was already known. For example, the Germans had a strict schedule, so the first few words to a daily message might have always been "To Herr Roemmel" or something like that. That was the real weakness; had the Germans not made things predictable, the enigma might not have been cracked until now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ignore my above comment, it is easier to just download the xp version, extract to C:enigma, and then run ecrunXP.bat, and minimize. You can also make a shortcut on the desktop to make this easier. You can make it display what it is doing if you take the > NUL 2>&1 part out.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh, sorry, port 50000.
Oops. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here is an easier way to run it just when you want.
extract the executable version to the desktop, and copy the contents of the run folder to C:enigma
Go to command prompt, type (no quotes) "cd C:enigma"
Then, enigma-client.exe keyserver.bytereef.org 65500
Minimize this, and let it run. - TaylorTAP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I would be flabbergasted if the decode was magically in german. What a dummy.
- wthulhu, on 08/29/2009, -3/+6Sorry Brad, but that's simply not how encryption works. The chances of that happening are astronomical. Besides that, if that were the case we'd have been able to break the code even more easily, seeming as how there would be twice as many possible outcomes.
- asmodeos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The cloud of mysticism that hangs around the Nazi era has little to do with reality. They built a phenomenal war machine. That is pretty much the end of it. I highly doubt they were investigating zombies, and Indiana Jones is the only reference I know of indicating the Nazis searched for mystical or iconic artifacts. Other than jet aircraft and work towards a nuclear weapon, it is all the result of a very effective propaganda program. One that still affects our outlook on the Nazi party.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What is with the complicated install instructions for their client?
- wormeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3your telnet doesn't seem to work for me
cmd
telnet bytereef.org 5000
gets me nothing? - clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3M4 Project Main: http://www.bytereef.org/m4_project.html
M4 Project WebLog: http://www.bytereef.org/m4-project-blog.html - Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, it's "Be sure to drink YOUR Ovaltine."
Close, though :) - thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@F1re4fect:
Not Seinfeld dude, it's from the movie "A Christams Story." - majordanger, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10QUICK!!!.... TELEGRAPH THIS INFO TO THE FRONTLINES ASAP!
- Dutchmang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Here's a stupid question: Why don't they just use the Enigma machine to crack it? I mean, the Germans had to know how to decipher it.... coding a message that isn't readable on the other end is useless.
Clearly I'm missing something, but I haven't heard anyone else bring this up over the course of several articles. - 0x0000ff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1perhaps if you looked at the earlier comments you'd understand your comment getting modded down.

WSURRU :) - samKreuzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stop! First it's OvoMAltine. Second Ovomaltine is from switzerland. Not from Germany. :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To check telnet to bytereef.org port 5000 and enter your public IP.
- RatBagu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's the first cipher.
- Braaaaaaaad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Itsinterseting to see these codes still being worked on and solved after all these years, imagine how long it took to crack the ones they did get, I almost wonder if some of these solutions are incorrect, how do we verify them? lol
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Das Juden?
- MuffinMafia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My grandmother just recently passed away. Over the course of her entire life I knew absolutely nothing about her. It wasn't untill yesterday that I found out her previous employment in the government's war department during WWII. Apparently she worked as a coder for the Enigma Project. I was wondering if anyone could help me find any information on this project, or even anything about my grandmother, Margaret Middleton.
- Beanlover, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Everyone please block johnjoseph12 for spamming these stupid links in all the frontpage stories.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Oh c'mon A Christmas Story, Ralph's secret message he had to decode... you guys are no fun...

now that's alphabet soup - Kikkomann, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Ummm... please educate me:
What is the significance of cracking these codes? Is it really worth the time and resources of all the people who pooled in to crack the code? - F1re4fect, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2galisus said "Why do the call it ovaltine? The cup is round.. the packaging is round.. they should call it ROUNDtine!" which is a Seinfeld reference. Even "yeah, thats gold man, gold." by eadnams is a reference from the episode as the first, though I'm not sure if it was intended. Admitedly, I wasn't clear.
- vegasbright, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Someone call Neal Stephenson!!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4According to the message, Hitler wants to know when the video Ipod is ever going to be announced.
- monsieurgrand02, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Wow.
