- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15You're in luck...
"Walters, who plays both for her high school and on a travel team, is farsighted and uses MaxSight prescription lenses, but they also come in a non-corrective version." - 06metzp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I wonder if these come in non-corrective lens form for people like myself who have good vision already. I'm not in any sports right now but I'd love to give these a try just to see what they're like. Also, I think the decision to classify these with sunglasses is a good choice since they're just color filters and not actively enhancing what you see.
- t0dd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Enhancements are cool but we always have to be careful where we draw the line.
Personally, I am looking forward to the day when a double amputee with state of the art prosthetics beats the world record for the 100 meter. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'd demand an asterisk.
- veloscaper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7wanna see if these will help your game whatever it is, try wearing sunglasses.
- rtd85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6this is a cool story but these things have been around for a while now. I know at least one college athlete (a friend) that has been using them since last spring. Still very interesting. Its really trippy to see someone with all black eyes.
- mikebeauchamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The concept of these is stupidly simple, and athletes have been using it for years.
Basically it involves chosing a pair of sunglass lenses in a colour that best shows the contrast for the particular sport that is being played. Now the same "technology" is being used in contact lenses. When I raced mountain bikes back in highschool, a lot of riders (myself included) would use amber coloured lenses because it better brought out the contrast between dirt and grass and rocks, etc.
These aren't enhancements.. just simply colour filters as an above poster mentioned.
A polarized version might also be interesting for sports with a lot of reflections. - kwelling12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Way old. Brian Roberts of the Baltimore Orioles started wearing these at the beginning of last season, over a year ago.
- TheFunny, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9This is old news.
- Tomos, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Ha ha ha! Oh gosh that's funny! That's really funny! Do you write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. You know, I've, I've never heard anyone make that joke before. Hmm. You're the first.God what a clever, smart person you must be, to come up with a joke like that all by yourself. That's so fresh too. Any, any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me too as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity. God you're so funny!
- reaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4holy ***** $80 for one box. that's insane if these are disposable.
- abbbllooooo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7OMG! Someone call the Digg police!
- gregmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3if i wasnt such a spaz then i would totally get some
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ridiculously expensive, but I have to say, they make the girl's eyes in the article look cool as hell.
Still not worth the price, not until they figure out how to put a mini-HUD in there. Then I'll think about paying $160 a box. - SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"you would have to have the lens oriented in your eye in the same way at all times; if it shifted around (rotationally), the polarization would fail"
It wouldn't be a problem. Toric lenses are contacts desgined for people with astigmatis. They have to be oriented in the same position at all times. They do this by weighting the contact at one point. The heavier point always falls to the bottom. They're usually a little bit thicker than normal contact lenses, but work just as well. - tek1024, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The only problem with polarization is that, due to the way it works,* you would have to have the lens oriented in your eye in the same way at all times; if it shifted around (rotationally), the polarization would fail. I'm not sure how big a problem this is with normal contacts, but it seems like a lens free-floating in your eyeball would subtly change position even when you just blinked or rubbed your eye to get some dust out....
* http://health.howstuffworks.com/sunglass4.htm - moeq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But can they shoot lazers from their eyes?
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The question becomes, at what point are you simply cheating by purchasing more and more physical augmentation?
- penguinix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But you can get free trial pairs of the lenses using this coupon http://www.nike.com/nikevision/maxsight/NIK0106028_NMS_FTP_Insert_1v1.pdf
I'll probably pick up a free pair just to test them out. - Eronysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Old news and cheaper than 160 a box if you search around.
- GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was a coupon for a free pair of MaxSight floating around online a couple of weeks ago.
- nocode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i kinda agree. brian roberts uses contact lens that have a red-tint of some sort that helps him see the rotation of the ball better giving him a huge advantage (hence his monster start last year aside from getting injured). the debate of whether this is performance-enhancing is questionable, but i think the bigger question is, where do we draw the line? will players have to stop wearing black paint under their eyes to reduce glare or even sunglasses?
- tormented, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you look at contacts that are used just to look cool (like radioactive symbols and crazy colours and stuff) they are $80AUS and they are good for only 30 wears.
- ANorton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think these have actually helped junior hit the ball better in the last 2 years.
- bamiam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Wow Tomos, YOU ARE CLEVER!
I don't think anyone has ever seen the episode of Family Guy that you blatantly ripped that from. While you're at it, why not change your username to Stewie and refer to RadiatedAnt as Olivia.
Good job sir - you obviously write YOUR own material. - 1807, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's like wearing sunglasses...outside"......NUFF SAID
- kipp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A kid on my high school's baseball team uses them. They're pretty intemidating and he says they do a good job.
- abbbllooooo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3So is news
- abbbllooooo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Wow really !?! You are sooooo cooolll!! Damn! Way ahead of the rest!
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+52002 called they want thier news back
- RegisteredUser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Isn't wearing contact lenses a bit dangerous for some sports?
- flickerbrain, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Not only is this OLD news, it's also a duplicate story. I posted to digg on this over a year ago. The digg item is here: http://digg.com/science/Next-Gen_Contacts_ , however, the originating site seems to have disappeared.
- tormented, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Delete this.
