- Brereton55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40what like the 2 people?
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Because it speaks volumes about MS's lack of commitment to its customers and partners. It's the principle that counts.
- biofusion, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Seriously this is getting way overblown. I bet 99% of you don't even use MSN music, so why in the world do you care?
- sshack, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17This is a prime example of why microsoft will not be able to beat the ipod.
You always get hurt when you do business with microsoft. - pixelguru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Two things...
The first time I see someone holding a Zune up in the air trying to get radio reception, I'm going to laugh until I puke.
Second, the whole reason I have an iPod is so that I don't have to listen to the radio. - skellener, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18So when the Zune fails, will M$ start yet a third installment of in compatible media? and then a fourth? This is crazy! What a bunch of clowns!
- pixelguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Microsoft will find some way to make their DRM confusing and hard for the consumer, and their clone of the iTMS will come up short. I base this statement on the company's long history of lackluster everything.
Microsoft always competes best before their products are released. They also do well when they can use their OS monopoly for promotion and distribution - something that is increasingly difficult due to legal scrutiny.
Just because Microsoft throws money (and chairs) at the competition doesn't mean they will succeed in dominating a market... just look at how well MSN is doing.
Finally, I think you have to look at Apple and Microsoft's thought process. Apple looked at the MP3 player market, and saw that they could make something better that people would want to buy (this is well documented). Everything I've seen from Microsoft says they looked at Apple's success and said "we can rip that off and try to cut into Apple's market share." - cinta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Oh yeah, I guess your right. Even though I have 5000 songs I am going to subject myself to ad-ridden, crap quality FM radio. Yeah I'd say that I am sold on the Zune now. I'm going to laugh when the Zune bombs.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Agree on the FM radio crap.
Never saw the point. Now an integrated XM and/or Sirius tuner, I'd be all over it. - charliebf5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7damn... stole my witty comment
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8> Weren't they offering to replace your iTunes collection if you bought a Zune?
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! - pixelguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Microsoft is famous for using unreleased products with lofty feature lists to sink the sales of competitors who actually have shipping product. Of course, what is finally released by Microsoft is only a fraction of what was promised, but by then, the competition is out of business.
I think judging Microsoft's unreleased products is only fair. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In a statement a Microsoft spokesperson said: "Since Zune is a separate offering that is not part of the Plays For Sure ecosystem, Zune content is not supported on Plays For Sure devices."
Is it really accurate to call Plays For Sure an "ecosystem" at this point? ;) - krackle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@sleepwalkers curious as to why you say undeserved? Who else deserves the market share. They didn't use any monopolistic or anti-competitive practices getting there player in the hands of the majority of consumers hands. They just made a product that the major decided to buy. Sounds like they EARNED that spot. You may not like the iPod and it is missing some Power User features, but for most people it is the player of choice.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@ terrya64:
No, it won't. Why? Well...
1) Massive market presence that started the mainstream MP3 player craze. Something that will be difficult for Microsoft to do. As a company, they may have a larger presence, but a majority of the public will remain blissfully unaware of the Zune.
2) Tight market integration with an easy to use piece of software. Apple has already locked down the entirety of the Mac demographic, since iTunes is the only viable option for listening to music right now, and iTunes is popular as all hell just simply because of the success of the iPod.
3) People like it's styling. Most people don't really care that the Zune is going to have a bigger screen or that it has WiFi (at least until they're able to buy songs wirelessly). It's slick and minimalistic with an interface that's practically unbeatable.
Should it be #1? Nah. Am I tempted to get a Zune? Yeah. Will I? Probably not. - shadownight, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10As if anybody was crazy enough to buy Microsoft DRMed music from MSN...
- mikewhite314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This is totally random, but I don't think I've ever heard Microsoft referred to as a "firm" before.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14Apple DRM, Microsoft DRM.
What's the difference? I mean, the Microsoft DRM plays on more stuff, but other than that? - digga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Do you live in the U.K.?
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I disagree about the Zune GUI. Although the GUI is slick, there is considerable wait between menus. Apparently, all that slick taxes the processor, something I was worried would be the case. I'm too impatient to wait for menus to load on my MP3 player. Also, there is excessive redundancy in the GUI when trying to get a track to play which makes the navigation process just a bit to confusing and definitely more work than on the iPod.
Should Apple step up their GUI? They'll have to in order to not look old fashioned, but I suspect it's already in the works for their sixth gen model. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7is this part of Microsofts plan for their ecosystem? sounds like a dysfunctional family . call the therapist
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@pixelguru ~ Thanks! For months I have been wondering where in hades people had been pulling that idea. Nobody could cite a source, but plenty repeated it like a mantra. I had no idea the idiots over at Engadget were responsible for that tripe.
I tried to explain to them that Microsoft couldn't afford to do something like that. They may have truckloads of cash in the bank, but they still need to satisfy their stock holders quarterly. I have hundreds of songs purchased through iTS. To get me to switch MS would have to shell out hundreds on top of losing money on the unit they sell me just to get me to switch. Multiply that by hundreds and thousands of people and that's just dopey. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is the Zune even out yet? Oh that's right let millions more of the iPod sell in between
- MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Indeed. I agree totally. I'll just continue to use my iPod.
That is, of course, precisely what Microsoft does NOT want to hear. ;) - pixelguru, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5ccanni - That was the original FUD when the Zune was first announced. Ordinarily, one would discount such rumors, but a company as rich as Microsoft *could* actually afford to engage in this kind of slash-and-burn marketing. Hopefully, even Microsoft isn't arrogant enough to pull a stunt like this.
http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/06/microsoft-planning-wifi-enabled-portable-media-player-working-o/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Maybe M$ will let the xbox 360 team be in charge of the zune, seems the xbox is something that they really got right. Even if you hate ms, you have to say that atleast the xbox and xbox 360 is nice
- exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@MioTheGreat: Agreed. There was an article on digg about how some RIAA/MPAA exec said that they haven't provided users with a single DRM method that's the same at multiple stores and works with multiple devices, and how this is in part responsible for piracy. An mp3 player that can't play mp3s is unimaginable, but ones that can't play PlaysForSure, Apple's DRM, etc. already exist.
- shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no, NPR is pretty much always on FM.... and of course they have tons of podcasts. nah, FM is a pretty lame feature.
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They're not even for sale yet. Where'd she buy one? I call BS.
- KMartSheriff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5My question is why anyone would want FM on an MP3 player. Isn't buying an MP3 player the reason for getting away from crappy FM radio?
- MacLiberal, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6What difference does it make? It's Microsoft, so get out your money and spend after all, you have no other choice, there is no other alternative, at least that's what most zombies believe which is why they use MS to begin with.
- mmaf, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6My question is why anyone WOULDN'T want FM on an MP3 player when it costs the same.
How can anyone complain about MORE features for less money? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In that case, URGE = business partner. So, them. And yeah, hardware manufacturers. And retailers who sell PlaysForSure devices.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Opinions don't need backing up. Facts do. Saying that one doesn't like the Zune doesn't require a reason. Saying that the Zune is dead ahead of time because Microsoft is basically starting over instead of trying to pull new life out of PlaysForSure and cutting off whatever audience they may have already have would require facts. And, since they've announced that Zune isn't part of the PlaysForSure "ecosystem," the facts are established.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, its true. The WiFi is crippled already. And, true, iPods don't do wifi, but they don't blindly announce that they have WiFi and then cripple it beyond belief.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hahahahahahahaha
- wilhoitm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I am not sure M$ makes any money from selling the XBOX or XBOX 360? I think they still are losing money on each box sold, they are trying to flood the market.
- ckufggid1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8YOU MSCS are all the same. In fact most of you are robots. I can direct you, mock you and more importantly PREDICT you, and your replies!! I have a great time laughing with my collegues, after I predict what the comments will be before I open them. It's amazing. Honestly, though, Zune is DEAD, its a brick of a design, and consumers are smarter nowadays. So humor me some more, I can predict what, if any repleis whill come of this post. Lastly, know that ultimately, in the end I seriously control you. :)
- elliotm01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HAHAHAHAHA!
All the more reason not to trust MS as a partner and as a provider.
Backstabbing and abandoning. - gregdigg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6@terrya64
"In the long run, I will bet that the Zune will be more popular than the ipod."
O RLY? - ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"Weren't they offering to replace your iTunes collection if you bought a Zune? Maybe they should do the same for your MSN music collection."
Site your source. I've never heard that and I don't believe it. - waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Where did you get a chance to try out Zune/Zune Store? Why is Apple's DRM better?
You state opinions but don't back it up. - markwid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since when has MS care about end user experience. Nahh. Even their own products don't work with each other. They always seems to take the easy way out for themselves and leave the user high and dry.
Take IE. Going from XP SP1 to SP2 messes up IE. Going from IE6 to IE7 messes up IE. Works for some site, doesn't for some other sites.
MS has taken "embrace, extend and extinguish" way too far. They do that to their own products, duh. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Isn't buying an MP3 player the reason for getting away from crappy FM radio?"
Not for most people. I own neither an iPod nor will I buy a Zune when it is released, my mobile phone plays mp4/3gp videos and mp3 and has a built in FM tuner, so apart from the additional capacity of a laptop hard drive, there would be no advantage for me anyway. Most of the time I have my laptop with me, which means I can watch DVDs in widescreen without squinting or listen to all of my music, and not just at crappy 160K.
But sometimes I don't happen to have any of the tracks I want to listen to, sometimes I just want to get the weather report, sometimes just a bit of a laugh with whatever radio show is on.
Even if you only use the FM twice a year, it is still a feature. It may not be good enough a feature to make you choose one player over the other, but if I gave you the choice of an iPod with or without a built in FM tuner at no price, all else equal, you would take it on the off chance you might want to use it one day. - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i wouldn't say the 360 is particularly 'nice,' but they didnt ***** it up for once.
- Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"People who have bought music from Microsoft's MSN Music store could face problems if they decide to buy the firm's new Zune portable player."
Should be:
"People who have bought music from Microsoft's MSN Music store have problems" - mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1while MS brags about how good it Will be, Apple is releasing new colors that people MUST have! I still think Apple has something planned to pop this Zune thing before Christmas. Right along with Vista. Apple's good at being quite... but delivering... something Microsoft needs to learn how to do.
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Now, here's an MS shill if ever there was one. Nice try...
All the stories you digg are pro-MS and anti-Apple. - steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Well, I'll make sure to have a "firm" grip on my Zune.
