- redskyformiles, on 01/14/2009, -3/+526numa numa guy is *****.
- aamer, on 01/14/2009, -7/+465Well, they're screwing themselves over, because another site will allow it if they won't.
- Azumoth, on 01/14/2009, -3/+336YouTube = Less Sound, More Advertisements!
- MindTrigger, on 01/14/2009, -6/+317*****' ridiculous. How is this hurting anyone? I don't go to YouTube to watch some videos to avoid buying music, and if I did hear a song I liked there, I would go buy a higher quality version of it. In fact, I'm quite sure I've purchased some songs I came across on YouTube.
If Google really pushes this, YouTube's popularity will start to tank. Music brings emotion to videos in a way nothing else can, and muted videos are nearly useless in most cases. Hell, if they are able to identify the songs, why not place ads with links below the videos so people can go buy the song instead of muting the whole video?? - majikmixx, on 01/14/2009, -12/+262Oh noes! What will we do without all those high quality, well dubbed, masterpieces?!?
- gametavern, on 01/14/2009, -2/+240*****... Sharing music like this HELPS the industry. Where would Rick Astley be without youtube? Still in the unemployment line, not in the Macy's parade, that's for sure.
- conversekid, on 01/14/2009, -15/+234***** YouTube.
- Finalreminder, on 01/14/2009, -12/+174Did it with mine.
No worries, if the music companies don't want free advertising of their tunes (albeit poorer quality) it's their shot-in-the-foot.
Imagine how retarded Apple would be if they banned TV show characters from using Iphones and Macs on TV
Dumbasses - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -3/+157In other news, the entire internet ***** off from Youtube, leaving only 14 year old girls and posers behind.
- aimhelix, on 01/14/2009, -2/+138Oh well, time to find a new video host.
- abooth413, on 01/14/2009, -2/+136Dave likes the TV show "Heroes"
Dave goes to youtube and finds his favorite scenes from the show set to some music.
Dave likes said music.
Dave looks in comments and sees the music is "Superman" by Five for Fighting.
Dave goes to itunes and downloads the song for $0.99 - or goes to Best Buy and buys the CD - while there he picks up Season 1 Heroes DVD.
What could have been if these people could get their ***** together. Retards. I defended you for a couple years - but the last couple years you have given me added incentive to take anything I can get for free.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okmcAJN0gYk - borez, on 01/14/2009, -3/+129Good lord, what is the ***** problem with these muppets and their stupid copyright laws. A small bit of logic tells me ( as a recording artist ) that the more my stuff gets heard (in any format) then the better it can only be for my long term sales.
- gsadamb, on 01/14/2009, -4/+122But who's gonna continue to make ***** videos which consist of random Naruto clips set to Linkin Park music??
Noooo! - fdgvieira, on 01/14/2009, -3/+118Next Month on Digg: "Youtube viewership down 50%!"

- FutureisDubious, on 01/14/2009, -2/+103They even muted the RickRoll
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0 - SilverBlade2k, on 01/14/2009, -2/+86How...will they know if an audio piece is authorized or not??
- tdaddy11, on 01/14/2009, -1/+84Same for the Evolution of Dance guy
- CrazedLeper, on 01/14/2009, -0/+82More control=less relevance. They're bound to hit critical mass and make themselves obsolete.
- Smeed, on 01/14/2009, -3/+72Google is on the slippery slope to *****.
- blissfollowed, on 01/14/2009, -2/+69Can they just replace the audio with the theme song to Benny Hill?
- degree, on 01/14/2009, -4/+65you're equating copyrighted music to child porn?
I got lost somewhere around the part where that makes absolutely no sense. - falafelkiosken, on 01/14/2009, -3/+62youtube is such a whore
- rhollencamp, on 01/14/2009, -1/+59this sucks. at work I listen to a lot of music by just searching for it on youtube and playing the video. there's a video for just about every song
there are some artists / publishers that have channels with music videos, but I don't want to be limited to only listening to sings with official music videos... - Trifold, on 01/14/2009, -0/+57Don't forget the insane racist commenters.
- bullsfan03, on 01/14/2009, -4/+60pretty sure Apple(and other companies) pay them to use their products in movies and such.
- Volatile36, on 01/14/2009, -3/+57They won't, they'll just assume you're in the wrong and mute your video.
Much like if they believe your video could get them in trouble, they take it down no questions asked. - Claverhouse, on 01/14/2009, -1/+52And the erudite, thoughtfully crafted comments ?
- portnoy, on 01/14/2009, -10/+56When will they finally succeed in eliminating ALL playing of anything remotely musical everywhere?
Personally, until they quit this crap I refuse to pay for any music at all. I don't even go to bars that have music, which pretty much means drinking at home. But I'm cool with that. - Elbryan233, on 01/14/2009, -1/+46well played.
- brenan999, on 01/14/2009, -2/+46Ugh. You know, YouTube has never been a good video hosting site. It just now finally got the ability to play HD (something vimeo has had from its start), its got a terribly ugly design (both the player itself and website), and its got the copy right nazi's on its ass 24/7. Oh and I almost forgot about the ADS! The only upside is that its widely used, but hopefully that will change. People should use Vimeo honestly, its so much nicer in every way imaginable.
- redskyformiles, on 01/14/2009, -1/+43thats a downside?
- abaybas, on 01/14/2009, -3/+41People will take their videos elsewhere. Unfortunate for google, but probably a life time opportunity for smaller video sharing sites.
- Devine122, on 01/14/2009, -3/+36What about every single one of the millions of guitar hero videos?
I'm sure that's the main downside to this - CATSCEO2, on 01/14/2009, -2/+35Vimeo?
- n0c0ntr0l, on 01/14/2009, -0/+33And so the search for a new video site begins. I can't believe the record industry think this can work.
- delti90, on 01/14/2009, -1/+32OKay, that was good.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 01/14/2009, -1/+32***** Quality and ***** loading times? Seriously? What other video site offers so many videos and allows HD uploads and can do it as fast as youtube? In my experience most other video sites are slow as hell and I always wind up looking it up on youtube because youtube loads instantly for me while others are still buffering. Even with their HD content.
If there is something to criticize it's their interface which doesn't have too many features. But as far as content quality and speed goes youtube is definitely one of the bests. I mean it's run by google...you know they aren't using cheap servers. - fortune500b, on 01/14/2009, -1/+29i c wat u did thar
- masterkenobi, on 01/14/2009, -1/+27I'm sure that the Chocolate Rain guy wouldn't mind us using his music.
- roadtripper, on 01/14/2009, -0/+26As an FYI -
Here's the email you'll receive . . . I know this because I *just* received it from YouTube.

Sincerely,
The YouTube Content Identification Team - FearSonic, on 01/14/2009, -4/+29I uploaded my videos to my video portfolio (http://www.youtube.com/JonLimFilms) and yesterday ran into this problem. I had two audio files:
- BJ Thomas - Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head
- Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On
And they were both pinged as soon as the uploads went live, and my video files went mute. I saw a dispute button, and I disputed, saying that it falls under fair use, and used the definitions I learned after a quick google.
This morning, checked it, and they were working just fine. I'm sure the dispute is still being processed, but it works just fine.
YouTube has set itself up to protect itself, which is just fine to me. - holamark, on 01/14/2009, -3/+27Tube *****
- Nishnabotna, on 01/14/2009, -1/+24Unless you fall under that pesky fair use thing.
- gametavern, on 01/14/2009, -0/+22Blew it all on drugs for sure.

Yea go ahead and do that, and then you will get this email from youtube (I got this a couple weeks ago):
Dear trashhalo,
We regret to inform you that the audio in your AudioSwapped video New Apartment is no longer licensed for use on YouTube. As a result your video has been muted or blocked.
Every day we work to make it as easy as possible for you to watch and share videos. For example, we work with the music community to license your favorite music for you to use on YouTube. But music licensing can be very complicated. The right to use a single song often requires permission from multiple owners, particularly when it comes to original fan-made videos that incorporate commercial music. That said, despite our constant efforts, it isn't always possible to maintain these innovative agreements, as is the case with the song used in your video.
Please visit AudioSwap and select another track from our growing library of prelicensed songs. After you swap, your video will again be available globally.
Sincerely,
The YouTube Team - Appox, on 01/14/2009, -0/+21"Hell, if they are able to identify the songs, why not place ads with links below the videos so people can go buy the song instead of muting the whole video??"
That's a very good idea - KevenM, on 01/14/2009, -6/+27I don't see how everyone can blame YouTube for this.
Yes, it's a ***** situation.
Yes, we like our free music
Yes, it's great advertising for the artists
Yes, repurposing music is illegal
Yes, the fact that repurposing music is illegal sucks, but it's still illegal.
No, this is not YouTube's fault.
If you want to find the real culprits, have a look at the RIAA, the record labels, the artists' managers, the lawyers who threaten YouTube.
YouTube is just abiding by the law, as much as it's a ***** law, and one we disagree with.
Encourage your favourite artists to post copyright authorization for the purpose of remixing notices on their websites, then the problem is solved. Use said audio clip, then direct the YouTube team to the copyright sharing notice on the given artist's site. - brettmjohnson, on 01/14/2009, -1/+22Actually, the theme song to Benny Hill is "Yakety Sax" by Boots Randolph, and it is copyrighted as well.
