- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those quotes were translated from their F.A.Q. by me...
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is this not like really old or something? I heard this on TV and other places like 2 years ago
- a_greer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was a show on SpikeTV a few weeks ago that went step-by-step through the process, it ended up costing like $0.10/Gal (getting oil free from a local eatery) and the resulting oil fual was acctualy producing more horsepower.
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not used vegetable oil... Most fast food restaurants needs to pay to get rid of their used vegetable oil. You could deal with them to get their "garbage"...
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is also the possibility to buy filtered oil, which is cheaper than clean "new" vegetable oil...
- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not money, it's environment!
- FamilyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So many negative people! If it's boring, move on! Don't comment on it being boring! Good Lord! It seems interesting enough!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think they're giving them away :D
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+034 persons actually...
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even if companies start selling their used vegetable oil, there are a lot of reasons it'll be better than the situation we have with gasoline. First off, it will more than likely be cheaper than gas. Secondly, vegetable oil is a renewable resource, unlike gas. Thirdly, we wouldn't have to deal with OPEC
- wezzul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is cool, we need to not be so reliant on gasoline as our only source of fuel. Hybrids and alternate fuels are the way to go.
- clubgus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey Next time I go to my dealership I can finally ask can I have Volkswagen Golf with fries on side, and spare the Mayo. Come on what's next Olive Oil, Canola Oil!! next time you at your next Picnic you won't need to use the Park's BBQ you can use car's engine to cook your BBQ Snags. In all Seriousness using Sugar cane such as ethanol in cars is the future none of this Solar Crap or vegetable Oil. I got an idea Maybe they can turn Wine into Fuel or even Beer into fuel!! you have Bar on Wheels!
- artemus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Neil Young uses vegetable oil in his cars. During his last tour, he ordered all the vehicles in his convoy to use vegetable oil.
- jacobjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's called *biodiesel*

This NPR report a month ago has American sources. I was looking on eBay at diesels after listening... - SoonerDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wouldn't a gallon of vegetable oil cost a crapload more than a gallon a diesel?
- elbaso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a MAKE Magazine podcast on biodeisel where they talk about how it's made and how efficient it is. Very informative.
http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2005/06/make_audio_show_4.html - wyleyrabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a station in Burnaby, BC (suburb of Vancouver) that now sells Biodiesel. I haven't tried it, and would rather have others be the gineua pigs, but would be interested so long as it can't hurt my car.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hear Willie Nelson runs his touring bus on vegtable oil. It was on 60 mintues or something a few months ago.
- Wogger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The most recent episode (season 1, ep 5) of Morgan Spurlock's TV show "30 days" deals with city people moving to an eco-commune for 30 days and one of their tasks is to convert a diesel car so it uses vegetable oil. They don't really go into detail, but show a little of what is required.
- adamS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My uncle works for VW and he was commenting a few months ago about how much crap he had to pull out of engines after people were using biodiesel in their diesel engines. I think there's a huge misconception that you can just throw any type of oil at all into these things - but in the long run you might be hurting your car.
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The car will work with vegetable oil by default. If you convert your car the way they suggest, you will end up with better general performance without hurting your engine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think you need to look at what is possible with the fuel and not what you can do with it now. Many people once thought computers were too large and expensive to be actually used by ordinary people.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a few people in San Fran who do this. Remember there is a difference between biodiesel and vegetable oil and that is important for engines. The guy I know gets his used vegetable oil from Mcdonalds , the resteraunt for fat lazy asses.
Anyway, he then has to ah screw it here is a link:

Vegetable is a neat idea, you really should be a translate bounce into the URL. Parce Que ne tout pas les personness parle francais! - mmmthmtskier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0En Ingles? FYI http://www.fattywagons.com/ http://www.greasecar.com/ http://www.vegpoweredsystems.com/
- bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0Go to your local fast food and get their oil from the fryers that they normally need to trash. you get free to dirt cheap gas. but i have no idea what that site says. speaky English?
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it an expensive conversion?
No, the conversion is not expensive. It's a fast-profit procedure since that fuel is cheaper than diesel. The system that you will chose will influence the cost of your conversion. Usually, you will cover your expense in less than 6 months.
Is it really cheap to use vegetable oil?
Yes, using vegetable oil is really cheap. The longer your course will be, the more cost-effecient your run will be. The owner of a Volkswagen TDI that travels 35 000 kilometers annually will save more than 1100$ CDN that year. That's like filling his tank 12 times against 35 without using the S.V.O. system. (Considering 1000 kilometers per full tank, that costs 55$ CDN each. Calculated on a yearly basis, included a preheated phase for rough winters. Diesel price at 1.02$ CDN / liters).
Will my engine works with that fuel?
Yes, if you have a diesel engine. Volkswagen engines (1.6L, 1,9L and 2.4L) and Mercedes engines seems particularly strong with that kind of fuel. Many Ford and GM trucks can also be modified. Many tractors, agricultural machinery and heavy trucks can also be modified. Unfortunately, gas engine cannot be converted. - Volarex, on 01/13/2009, -0/+0water fueled car already exist, check this out
http://be-sm4rt3r.blogspot.com/2009/01/history-wat ... - sarasweet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This digg story came up in my newsreader the same time as this story in my local paper:
"Fryin' down the road-vegetable oil pickup retrofit"
Yeah, it might be a bit tougher if EVERYBODY suddenly went to biodesiel and tried to get used oil from restaurants, but at least there are alternatives out there for the willing until we wean ourselves off of fossil fuels. I don't think veggie oil in this form is the answer to all our problems, but I do think eventually we will be able to use our own garbage to power our cars and for electricity in our homes. We don't need to wait for organic material to fossilize after all... - steveoa3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I test petroleum products for a living and the State Agency I work for (State of Wisconsin Department of Commerce) is writeing new codes for Bio-Diesel (read soy bean diesel) but not for waste veggie oil.
With the EPA mandating ultra low sulfur diesel fuels in the near future, the bio-diesels help with lubrication and static buildup. The low sulfur diesels are dangerous in that they hold a crazy high static charge that wants to make you blow up when moved along piping or place in tank.
You also need ether heated lines and tanks or additives to make the stuff liquid and not jello. Diesel fuel as a ton of energy in it per gallon verses gasoline so as the engines get better the power and mileage go up !
No need for research so long as prices of gas have been low all these years, things have changed now, just wait til gasoline is $3 a gallon later this year, more TDI;s and hybrids will be sold yet !
Steveo - TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can make bio-fuel for a car too. Ethanol is basically corn. You can create a gasoline substitute from corn. Imagine our country moving to that. No more government subsidized farming because we need all that to be produced for fuel now. There would be Zero emissions so you wouldn't ever have to get your car checked for that. Your exhaust would be harmless so people couldn't die from having their engine on in an enclosed space. Your emissions would smell like corn or beans or whatever and not like normal fuel. Never have to rely on the middle east ever again. Never have to drill ever again. The only problem is this would probably crash our economy because it is so based on oil. Then when the middle east has no money war would wage like crazy over there as every country tried to overthrow every other country to obtain resources that they now can not afford.
Eric Wilson - laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can vegetable oil harm my engine?
No, vegetable oil cannot harm your engine if used wisely. If your conversion system is adequate and that the oil that you use is suitably treated, you won't have any problems. Many scientific studies demonstrates that vegetable oil is superior fuel than diesel. The viscosity of oil is definitely thicker than diesel, which thus lubricates the mechanical components.
Can this fuel be used during winter?
Yes, without any problems if used suitably. First, you need to add a second tank to your car. This tank will need to heated to raise the temperature of the oil. For security purposes, a second heating system needs to be installed right before fuel combustion.
Can I use both fuel at the same time?
Yes, no problem. Even if you ran out of vegetable oil while traveling, you can add diesel to your tank to get to your destination. It's possible to switch from vegetable oil to diesel anytime, one way or another. - laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Calice que le monde est chialeux...
- possum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does this mean that the gross smell of McD's is going to be everywhere soon?
deep fat fried rubber donuts??

ha - flashb6226, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am currently trying to convert my Mercedes 190D to vegetable oil. I talked to an injector mechanic that said he thought the sugars in the oil might be a problem. Can some one give me some insight into this. I am going along with the conversion any way but I would like to know.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Welcome to digg, everything old is new. Linux and Macs rule and Firefox is slowly creeping up on IE everyday and you must be informed about it.

http://www.dieselearth.com/ - BOBOH619, on 06/17/2008, -0/+0Ethanol is a pipe dream. Corn, sugar cane crops can not be grown in quantities large enough to affect the world’s oil problems. Ethanol is a poor burning filler that reduces your mpg and creates more problems in your vehicles fuel system than it is worth. Vegetable oil is not for everyone. These conversion kits cost $9000 dollars and up. This isn’t some redneck pouring his mother French fry oil into his gas tank. Before you make an uninformed decision go to www.greasecar.com .

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You think McDonalds would willingly give away their oil? Maybe when one person in town does it, but when every person does it a) there wont be enough b) they'll sale it for a price and c) people will go back to the normal way.
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0F**k the american way then...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well said. I wonder how the mileage is affected; my TDi New Beetle gets 40-44 mpg.
