- sneakeykop, on 06/11/2008, -14/+512If you are willing to leave your job over facebook access, i don't want to work with you anyway....
sssseeee yaaa!! - anderzole, on 06/11/2008, -18/+449As an employer, I care more about what my employees are producing rather than what websites they're looking at. Someone can easily waste a lot more time looking at sites like cnn and espn -- so who's to say that facebook is the lone site that should be banned.
- Reaper2806, on 06/12/2008, -15/+289Blocking content may or may not be a solution, but is it that crazy for an employer to expect you to work for your money these days? If people want to quit over lack of facebook access, let them, the company is probably better off without them.
- inactive, on 06/12/2008, -3/+190As a guy on Digg who pretends to have employees, I must agree with you.
- cryonix, on 06/12/2008, -5/+190I never banned a site, in fact I requested the internet blocker to be lifted. I started monitoring my employees computer usage with a website timer with all their knowledge. At the end of the week I presented the numbers to everyone and asked what they thought. I let them have numbers every week to see what they would do. Internet usage went down and appeared to be more streamlined, less 'browsing' and more direct connections to myspace and facebook, and for shorter times. No need to make or enforce any rules, they just decided together to cut back once they saw the numbers. everyone wins. after a while I stopped checking the timer.
- imacommi, on 06/11/2008, -54/+182If they are blocking facebook odds are that they are blocking many other things like youtube as well. It might be more of an issue of whether or not you want to have your company telling its adult workforce what they can and cannot look at. I wouldn't personally quit over this type of an issue, but I guess other people are. More power to them.
- soulkitchen, on 06/12/2008, -0/+103John Smith's status changed from "employed" to "living in parents basement".
- DickScott, on 06/11/2008, -17/+116With this economy he should have been happy to have a job. Maybe it was a crappy job.
- lolupissed, on 06/11/2008, -14/+110Wow, what a bunch of morons. I don't make money off facebook, I make money by working a job. Boo hoo I can't go on Facebook for 40 hours of my life. Well guess what? There are 128 other hours of the week you can access Facebook. If that isn't enough then you are a freaking loser. Financial stability > Facebook
- SteelChicken, on 06/12/2008, -2/+97as long as peoples work is getting done on time, why do you care what they do in between? some people take 6 15 minute smoking breaks a day. some people go for walking breaks. some people surf de intarwebs. as long as their work is getting done, who cares?
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -14/+91At least the company can now rest easy knowing that they have one less employee screwing around on the clock.
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -5/+78the main reason i have it blocked on my networks is due to viruses...i set 1 computer up that they can use facebook and myspace on..workstation infections dropped to almost zero since i did that...
- mazerrackham, on 06/12/2008, -0/+70Kids these days...can't even set up their own home proxy.
- PSU_Blue, on 06/12/2008, -3/+65It's 2008, not 1950, folks. Productivity isn't all about sitting at a desk for 8 hours straight. Some of the most productive, lucrative, innovative companies (Google and Apple are two well-known examples) have incredibly laid-back work environments, and it seems to be working. Refusing to let your employees take some time to relax, browse the internet, or (God forbid) have a little fun at work doesn't create a positive or productive work environment.
- inactive, on 06/12/2008, -6/+63Welcome to the adult world, where your Internet access is limited so you LIKE OM have to do work and stuff.
Looks like Mike Judge was right:
"As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point. Natural selection, the process by which the strongest, the smartest, the fastest, reproduced in greater numbers than the rest, a process which had once favored the noblest traits of man, now began to favor different traits. Most science fiction of the day predicted a future that was more civilized and more intelligent. But as time went on, things seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. A dumbing down. How did this happen? Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species."

- JasonPeck, on 06/11/2008, -8/+54If I did work in an office, I could find a lot better ways to distract myself and waste time online than Facebook now.
- Qong, on 06/11/2008, -10/+49I agree with the article, whoever would quit over not being able to waste time while they were supposed to be working needs to grow up; they will at some point, if not they going to be in for an awful surprise.
Talented workers will also stay where they are appreciated and are thoroughly compensated for their high quality work. You can be damned sure that they aren't going to be wasting time on Facebook when they are supposed to be working. - abhiroop, on 06/12/2008, -5/+42Are you stupid? WHY would a company, ANY company, want to allow access to sites like FB? Its much easier to block it and be done with it. No wasted productivity and no chance for mal-ware.
- WiseWeasel, on 06/11/2008, -0/+37Like posting on upcoming stories on Digg...
/me is grateful his employer doesn't block Digg - inactive, on 06/12/2008, -3/+39Definitely. My thoughts were "Good, now they can fill that position with someone who wants to work."
- AndrewJC, on 06/12/2008, -0/+33My company blocks Facebook and Myspace not because of productivity (in fact, they allowed them for a LOOONG time), but because there was an INORDINATE amount of spyware coming from the two sites. It really was a security decision for them.
- schroeder, on 06/12/2008, -1/+34English *****, do you speak it?
- inactive, on 06/12/2008, -3/+34The smug is strong in this one.
- uppercanuck, on 06/12/2008, -3/+33So, how's he going to pay for his internet service now that he's out of a job?
"Hi, mom"
"Hello, dear."
"Um, like, I need a place to stay for a while."
"What happened? Are you in trouble?"
"No. It's, like, well, I quit my stupid job."
"Oh no! Did something awful happen?"
"Yeah, totally. Pft.My stupid boss won't let me use Facebook. Dumb fascist."
"Well, my dear, there's a YMCA down the street from you. I suggest getting there early." - davidrools, on 06/12/2008, -0/+28Yes you do sound like a very competent and innovative manager...what are you doing on digg?
- kateyall, on 06/12/2008, -2/+28hahaaaaaaaaa.... sorry, a digg alone just did not suffice.
- Jsmuli2, on 06/12/2008, -5/+30"Act like an adult" is a phrase I will never understand because I have seen many adults act like ***** and little babies just because they aren't getting their way. Many adults I have met are their spouse's bitch and feel too small around them to voice their own opinion. Other adults I have met are slaves to their job where they drink way too much coffee and have been balding since they turned 27. Our government is ran by "adults" and every horrible teacher I ever had (especially my kindergarten teacher who hated kids apparently) were all "adults."
Let's move away from that ironic phrase and say something like "Life's a bitch, deal with it."
It makes more sense considering that is the one thing everyone has in common on Earth, life is a bitch. Even the happy do-gooder-hippies fall on some rough patches.
The place I work at now (being laid off tomorrow) does not allow any "community based" sites or "gaming" sites. So Youtube, Facebook, Myspace, gamespot, and just about any "bad" picture get banned. Digg is one of the few sites I can use.
I am 24 years old. I don't care that Facebook is banned because, well, I don't care what "mood" my mother is in. It's sad that people in my age group would actually quit their job over something as stupid as a ban on websites. I would like to meet those people, kick them in the nuts (vagina) and say "life is a bitch, deal with it!"
/this is all assuming that Facebook has become such a large aspect of young people's lives. - senfo, on 06/12/2008, -1/+26While I agree with the premise of what you said, I have nothing against blocking sites that are considered breeding grounds for malware (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, etc.).
That said, I personally believe in giving people the opportunity to be professional. At the end of the day, they have a job to get done and if they're browsing Facebook for hours on end, they're obviously not doing what they're paid to be doing. However, I have nothing against an occasional mental break. Hell, I'm doing it right now! - inactive, on 06/12/2008, -2/+26What a bunch of ***** idiots.
I hope they stay unemployed so they can stay online and 'social network' all day with a bunch of people they don't know in real life and will most likely never meet. - jtbndy, on 06/12/2008, -0/+22While people have every right to quit for whatever reason they want to...... Quitting because of no access to Facebook is the dumbest ***** reason I've ever heard of.
- SurrealDream, on 06/12/2008, -0/+22You leak so much cynicism, I could collect it in a bucket and sell it to teenagers as "Emo Fuel".
- woodrow8292, on 06/12/2008, -4/+26Wow that's amazing, an employer actually wanting their employees to do work at work?? What kind of world do we live in! This is what is exactly whats wrong with our country people think they are entitled to whatever they want whenever they want it. You go to to work to work not play on the computer and send your friends messages- OMFG!!! IDK how we got home i was so drunk! LMAO TTYL ---it's called being an adult. Act like one at work. I am sure the world will keep spinning if you can't check your facebook for 8 hours or so. I have lived my whole life without facebook, it can be done!
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+20Good employers know that results are what matter, not how much time is spent on obtaining those results. If someone gets their stuff done quickly and takes a quick break to go online - so what? You may actually get more out of your workers if they know that you respect them enough to give them some breathing room.
That being said: anyone who *actually* quits their job over Facebook is clueless about the state of the economy right now. On the other hand, living in mom's basement gives you so much more time to establish "social networks" online.... - thebza451, on 06/12/2008, -2/+22um, most good firewalls incorporate site blocking as a feature of the firewall itself, it's just a piece of securing your network. i'm sure if they're blocking sites they also have a firewall, if not the firewall is blocking the sites itself.
- Hosalabad, on 06/12/2008, -0/+20Would it really kill you to wait until you got home?
- cubicledrone, on 06/12/2008, -10/+29Perhaps using a less ***** browser and operating system would help?
- doctordbx, on 06/12/2008, -0/+19I think if a company finds employees are spending too much time on Facebook and they are having productivity issues, then banning Facebook is valid.
Quitting your job because they don't let you access Facebook during the hours they're paying you for isn't going to win many sympathy votes I think. - floppyparty, on 06/12/2008, -1/+19That's not a bad idea from a mgmt perspective. Big Brother is timing you.
- dafunkmonster, on 06/12/2008, -3/+21Says the quintessential digger.
- cyberwiz01, on 06/12/2008, -2/+19Unfortunately, the companies that are stuck in 1950 far outnumber the ones that realize it's 2008.
- bosssmiley, on 06/12/2008, -0/+17Emo Fuel: cuts engine emissions, cuts your fuel costs, and cuts itself.
- Bith8654, on 06/12/2008, -0/+17Emo Fuel: refreshing AND depressing!
- Tyr7BE, on 06/12/2008, -1/+18"Why can't 'internet break' be the new 'smoke break'?"
Absolutely. I don't facebook much myself, but I know people who do. Most of them say they'll log into facebook as a reward for finishing up something big - sort of a separator between tasks. Take away that reward at the end of a job and you take away a lot of incentive to get it done quicker.
I know I do something similar with google news. When I get tired or frustrated with what I'm doing, I pop open google news for a bit and see what's happening. One way or another, I'm still tired and frustrated, and probably wouldn't go back to my work if I couldn't access google news. More likely instead of killing 10 minutes looking at the news I'd get up and leave the building for a while. Maybe better for me, but worse if you're concerned about productivity.
A happy employee is a productive employee. Let people work as they see fit, when they see fit. If they start missing deadlines and not getting work done, then you have an issue, and you can deal with it on a case by case basis. But a blanket block on websites is NOT the way to deal with productivity issues. - deadbaby, on 06/12/2008, -18/+34I don't know what's worse... WoW players or social network whores. I hate them both so much.. it's like picking between two delicious flavors of ice cream.
- Viend, on 06/12/2008, -1/+17Or 2 crappy flavours rather.
- alternateheaven, on 06/12/2008, -3/+18How about getting fired for circumventing security measures and violating an AUP
- Hosalabad, on 06/12/2008, -9/+24If you were in that situation and you were this on the fence over the issue, go ahead and quit.
A work provided internet connection is almost always for business use only. You want facebook and youtube? Go home during your lunch break and get your fix. Or quit. Or get fired when I hand your boss a Websense report and he starts to wonder why your productivity is crap. - carl9331, on 06/12/2008, -11/+26Isn't the company doing them a huge favor by giving them a job in the first place? What a very screwed sense of entitlement to quit over a facebook ban. Provided I can excel in their jobs, I'd be glad to offload that job from your hands, you spoiled ingrates!
- MattB123, on 06/12/2008, -0/+15Mostly the flavor is bitter.
