- tensaibaka, on 11/15/2007, -4/+98Even though I live in Japan, I find Comcast a real shady company. At work I can receive emails from customers living in the US using Comcast, but when I send a reply back, "message undeliverable...." Luckily the customers leave their phone numbers so I can call them, but with the time difference sometimes its difficult. I've been trying to contact Comcast for over a year now to see what the deal is, but no reply. I've even gotten people at HQ in the US to send them messages asking what's up, no reply. Some of the customers themselves have even asked Comcast what's up because it makes business for them difficult, no reply.
- codewater, on 11/15/2007, -3/+78Just to be an ass: I'm paying $20/month for 100/100mbits full duplex (no throttling, no blocked ports; not even SMTP, fixed IP, no download limits, etc) and always, always do I get at least 70/70mbits when testing.
PS. Move to Sweden. :) - einfeldt, on 11/15/2007, -5/+65Dugg.
It's good that you are blogging on this point to raise attention to Comcast's deficits.
But, AFAIK, here in SF, we only have the choice of ATT and Comcast for "high speed" Internet service in many areas. Earthlink, which is owned by a Scientologist, is not available at my house! ATT is worse on all counts, and so I had to recommend Comcast to a neighbor! It's really time to support free wifi, such as this service:
http://sf.meraki.com/overview
BTW, I absolutely loved the vid on the Comcast guy sleeping on the couch because he was on hold for so long. Unbelievable.
The sad thing is that Comcast is failing because ATT is cutting off their air supply. ATT is in the process of reforming itself as a monopoly, but this time they will be unregulated. That is another reason that I often (reluctantly) recommend Comcast! This situation is really broken, and will remain so, until we are able to get free wifi up and running nationwide in the US. - fubuvsfitch, on 11/15/2007, -2/+49I work for Comcast, so I'm....
Dammit! Wrong site. - Brian48216, on 11/14/2007, -4/+49Didn't the FCC recently pass a decision saying that Apartments cannot have exclusive deals with providers?
- ravage86, on 11/15/2007, -1/+46Does the government ban Pepsi from being able to service my house?
I can't get any other cable company. It's a monopoly. - nizzy1115, on 11/15/2007, -3/+47just cuz you have comcast doesnt mean you have to use comcasts email.
- shawnh, on 11/15/2007, -1/+32I just recently moved to Arlington, VA. Comcast has the worst customer service, nebulous billing practices, and overall poor internet (especially in wake of the packet-shaping scandal).
- JonForTheWin, on 11/14/2007, -5/+30>Broadband internet is not a necessity.
YES IT ***** IS I PAY MY ***** BILLS THROUGH IT AND MOST OF MY BUSINESS IS DONE THROUGH IT I NEED TO EAT GOD DAMN IT - zoom1928, on 11/14/2007, -4/+29Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting.
- starf, on 11/15/2007, -2/+26Are you paying for guaranteed 10Mbs? Or "up to 10Mbs"? They love to use terminology like that, or "We're not blocking bittorrent, we're just time shifting it."
- Gir53457, on 11/15/2007, -2/+22American Telecommunication companies are amongst the most evil cults in the world.
- skyfire1, on 11/15/2007, -3/+22I HATE comcast.
- penneyisok, on 11/15/2007, -1/+20Yes, he did kind of mention it in the third paragraph....
"Yes, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) here in the United States recently outlawed apartment complexes entering into single source contracts like this -- which force a particular vendor on apartment residents. But I don't hold out much hope that the FCC is going to come to my rescue."
Does anyone ever actually read the articles? - sekhui, on 11/14/2007, -1/+19i'd put up with that for 70mbps. ;p
- bjornski, on 11/15/2007, -0/+18Except for the fact that most of that infrastructure was laid down at taxpayer expense.
- sparkmonkeyz, on 11/15/2007, -5/+18I have Wave Broadband, who is almost exactly like Comcast (I actually think Comcast owns Wave), but they are close to as bad as Comcast. I am paying for 10Mbs, and every time I test it, I only get around 2.5Mbs, so I called up customer support and told them what was up, and all they did was look at my account and go, "oh no, you have 10Mbs, it says so here on my computer that's what your paying for." Not once did they understand that I really wasn't getting 10Mbs, and that is why I was calling.
- chris9902, on 11/14/2007, -2/+15thonnie loves the cox
- Gir53457, on 11/14/2007, -2/+14I didn't bury you, even now, so there is no need to insult my intelligence. There is a difference between an exclusive deal and a monopoly. McDonald's only stock Coca-Cola product because they only want to stock Coca-Cola products and they made a deal. Apartment owners are making illegal deals that require their tenants to only use Comcast broadband or none at all. And in this day and age, you need a high speed internet connection at home.
- Maarek, on 11/15/2007, -0/+12You're right..... good thing no company has paid that kind of cost. thanks to federal funding they get monopolistic control and a decreased startup cost. Isn't the free market fun?
- jdowney, on 11/15/2007, -1/+13if you help me find a place to hang while i find a job for an english speaking person ill be on the next plane over, after reading sweden had one of the highest populations of athiest i knew it was a special place. i love america but clearly the majority are in favor of not doing anything about anything i am now a minority. although its funny because its not that easy to just move away from the place you live even if you move within your own country.
- Sogui, on 11/15/2007, -5/+17Wow, sounds like you need some real problems.
I wish I had a life where moving out was an option based on the internet service I was receiving. - flux1, on 11/15/2007, -0/+12Coca Cola doesn't secretly watch everything I eat and drink and report it back to the government.
- sekhui, on 11/14/2007, -0/+11comcast sure has a lot of accounts on digg lately.
- blindhammer, on 11/15/2007, -2/+13I switched to digital cable with Comcast a few months ago. I was pretty happy. Then one day all my digital cable channels (over 100) just disappeared. All gone. So, I called Comast and they said "Oh, well, you now need to pay an additional $12 to get all the regular digital cable channels." I resonded that I wasn't going to pay and the cable person immediately hung up.
It's Comcastic! - KevInTx, on 11/15/2007, -1/+12All of Houston, Texas was recently switched over to ComCast and I can say that they truly SUCK ASS... I've not had but about 4 channels that still come in on my TV for about 2 months now and they are nearly unwatchable because of the static. My "always on" internet is rarely on and even then I have the blazing speed of a 2800 baud modem... if I'm lucky. I asked around my condo complex and neighbors and they are saying the same thing.
ComCast's tech support basically is telling everyone to go F themselves that is after your on the phone for 4 hours and finally get to speak to a real human... who can barely speak English... barely.
So yes I can see why someone would want to move rather than get stuck with ComCast... I'm actively looking for a replacement now, probably Verizon's FIOS. - blanski, on 11/14/2007, -0/+11Yes they can. My apartment complex did it to me. I was on cable with Brighthouse Networks (I believe, a subdivision of Time Warner). One day my internet and digital cable stopped working. I called brighthouse and they said they would send a tech. A day later I get a call saying they no longer service my apartment complex.
I go to my front office and they say they have switched us to something called Ygnition Networks. Basically what this company does is they cut off the apartments access to the local cable provider. They feed our "cable TV" with a satellite provider that is shared with the entire community and even worse they had a single T1 line as the "cable internet access" for the entire apartment complex. The (non-premium) cable is included with the apartment but they were charging me $25 for the internet connection which was pretty much at 56k speeds.
End result? I am now paying almost double what I used to pay for a cable connection for splotchy DSL. I no longer have any digital cable, just their crappy rent-included "cable TV".
I absolutely hate Ygnition Networks and hope this new FCC ruling puts them out of business. Their whole business-model consists of making deal with Management companies so that apartment dwellers have no choice in their services. Not only that, but they provide an incredibly inferior service compared to what they replace. - Gir53457, on 11/14/2007, -3/+13Double post. I wish there was a way to delete these.
- tedonion, on 11/14/2007, -0/+10Actually, it probably is. The apartment complex may not allow it.
- samdu, on 11/14/2007, -1/+11Ugh... The Comcast DVR is horrible. Once you guys get the TiVo software, you'll realize how incredibly bad the Comcast DVR is.
- cawpin, on 11/14/2007, -2/+11I'm not really sure how this is being done. Is the internet access included with rent? If not, they can't just cut off people's contracts with other providers.
- Kavok, on 11/14/2007, -3/+12The state of almost ALL ISPs in America is pathetic.
Google really needs to start an ISP :( - tdave365, on 11/14/2007, -1/+9YES. I've long wondered where the hell these apartment complexes ever got the "cable TV" mentality of broadband from. Who the hell wants to move into an apartment or condo building and have which broadband technology, or which brand of technology, dictated to them. I imagine in the worse case scenario they even force the tier of service on residence. You know "free internet" means the lowest Verizon tier available, and which you're unlikely to be able to change with a phone call. That isn't going to wash with the tech savvy.
- expert01, on 11/15/2007, -3/+11I feel bad for that guy. Imagine having to hold a phone to your ear listening to crappy music, advertising, and "be with you shortly" for an hour just to do your job. It's bad enough for me when someone comes in to get an ink refill kit for their crappy Dell printer and talk to me for 45 minutes about how they're in a huge hurry and can't go anywhere else to find it because they have no time.
- sfgeek, on 11/14/2007, -1/+9I live in arlington as well, you have to watch you bill every month because they will try and sneak it fees or simply fail to make changes to your bill they promised in the hopes you won't notice.
- Joshuarr, on 11/14/2007, -1/+9But tell us how you really feel.
- LowRentDiggs, on 11/14/2007, -3/+11Like the Billy Joel song: "If that's moving up then I'm moving out"!
- dinostabOMG, on 11/15/2007, -2/+10Maybe. This seems to be written in the passions of a first reaction though. I'm sure he'll give them a call, if he's going to put this much effort into the thing. Anyway, if they don't backtrack on these plans, he can post the correspondence on his blog and get an asston of diggs.
- starf, on 11/15/2007, -2/+10@bingobongony, They could share that initial investment and share the market space. Or another company could service the area and pay the first company a percentage or a one time fee or something. Or better yet, they could provide better service so that people actually want to use them.
- Joshuarr, on 11/14/2007, -2/+10*****
- arcticblue, on 11/14/2007, -1/+9You don't know much about Japan then. I have a couple friends who live and work here and are quite successful, but I lost their phone numbers when I switched cell phone companies and I don't know where they live right now (long story). I used to know several English teachers here a few years ago and they made pretty good money also. To my knowledge, none of these people had wings coming from their ass.
- darundal, on 11/14/2007, -1/+8Comcast was the worst ISP I have ever dealt with other than AOL in the 90's. Several times a week our cable modem randomly start lose it's connection to the internet, and I would have to restart it. I called them several times and had them send down a technician to try to figure out what was wrong (never did). Then, Time Warner buys out Comcast in my area, and suddenly the issues with the modem disconnecting disappear (didn't switch modems) and I get better download and upload speeds to boot.
- DickyT83, on 11/15/2007, -2/+9Sorry to hear that.
- Gir53457, on 11/14/2007, -1/+8Unfair market dominance. They're trying to force people to only use Comcast, in less than legal ways I might add, which qualifies it as a Monopoly.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -1/+8Have any links to real estate searches for Sweden? I look on Google and all you get are these shady mom & pop shop looking sites with absolutely no good info.
Seriously considering moving there given the current political climate here.. - orangysb, on 11/14/2007, -5/+12You rarely ever get the full speed as advertised, those are only maximum theoretical values, that's how it works all around.
- timusca, on 11/14/2007, -1/+810Mbs means you'll get 10Mbs on a perfect day, with no one else using internet, with planets aligned, and someone scratching your back. You will never see 10Mbs. I pay for 6 Mbs and only get about 2Mbs typically (I live in a new neighborhood, so not too many people are on the same circuit). The only way to get a dedicated 10Mbs line is to pay thousands of adollars a month for a T1 or T3 line.
- KenSPT, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6He's right, there is no word to describe how bad Comcast's customer service is. I've had it for the last year or so. It was a huge hassle getting everything set up in my apartment, when it got "set up" there were nothing but issues, and the problems continue on a somewhat rapid basis.
If I have an issue, it's like pulling teeth to get it fixed ... and God bless me if I need to have someone come to my apartment !!! Of course, if I ever forget to pay my bill, they're right on time with those classy yellow shut-off notices.
Everyone always made comments about "Big Tobacco", people need to start talking more about "Big Cable" ... - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6That's what they WANT you to think O.O
