- aguitarhero, on 12/09/2007, -13/+1658OMG why didn't you claim your prize!?
- Roger, on 12/09/2007, -4/+684I'm confused. Wasn't I the 10,000th visitor?
- placi, on 12/09/2007, -9/+629haha are you guys suckers, i clicked it and already received my prize.
- Eeqmcsq, on 12/09/2007, -9/+549I was pretty tolerant of ads in general while web surfing around the Internet. The annoying ads on Digg was the tipping point for me to finally install Adblock Plus.
- fishgeekva, on 12/09/2007, -16/+461Come on Kevin, digg users are too intelligent to click on these anyway. Get rid of em!
- anaesthetica, on 12/09/2007, -13/+394Ads are targeted. We are receiving these ads because the democratically voted up content on Digg has gotten stupider. Thus ads for stupider demographics. Simple. Stop digging stupid *****.
- Shuk, on 12/09/2007, -3/+325What I don't get is WHY they use this kind of cheap trick when the people who use digg clearly aren't going to fall for it. Telling us it's not a joke doesn't fool anyone. In fact, it makes it more stupid.
- danrik, on 12/09/2007, -4/+309Seriously. And 10,000? what, in the last 30 minutes?
1995 called, they want their ad back. - Thequestion, on 12/09/2007, -7/+307A boat's a boat, but the prize claim could be anything. It could even be a boat!
- B1shop, on 12/09/2007, -22/+234Firefox+Ad Block Plus FTW.
Good Game. - vonskippy, on 12/09/2007, -17/+213Digg has ads???
- oesj, on 12/09/2007, -2/+197if you don't want people to block your ads, don't put up what is clearly a (poor attempt at a) fraudulent advert. TV stations don't allow lies in their ads, why should a website do it (at least one that wants a modicum of respect).
- h4mx0r, on 12/09/2007, -5/+182I didn't realize how unpopular Digg really is :(
- Drood, on 12/09/2007, -16/+158My first thought on seeing this was "Digg has ads?"
- RedS0x, on 12/09/2007, -0/+140Serously...
"This is not a joke"
Oh in that case...! - bakefy, on 12/09/2007, -1/+132EVEN BETTER THAN THE 10,000th!
http://westrealm.homeip.net/irock.png - georgemason01, on 12/09/2007, -1/+119Firefox and Adblock have been preventing me from making millions.
- aldenhg, on 12/09/2007, -3/+110I was working on a friend's computer and while it was downloading some updates I decided to surf Digg. I was both the 10,000th visitor and the 999,999th! I think I win the whole country of Nigeria.
- scrumpy, on 12/09/2007, -13/+116Every time I am the xx,xxx, xxx visitor to a site I shoot a puppy. I hope these people are happy; it's not me your honor, it's that I'm always a winner- now I loose.
- mrfreeziexp, on 12/09/2007, -2/+101no dude it says I won something. ads don't lie bro.
- Skunkhair, on 12/09/2007, -4/+92wow... i can't believe i just clicked a link to see what an ad looks like. Thankfully, with the Firefox plugins I shall never know when i'm a winner. You know...because I don't see them.
- Dotcommer, on 12/09/2007, -9/+922digs1cup?
- 80hd, on 12/09/2007, -2/+82If the internet were a country. I would not drink the water there......
- alexforcefive, on 12/09/2007, -2/+82I'M SUPER SERIAL YOU GUYS
- spammishking, on 12/09/2007, -2/+81A lifetime supply of adware and penis enlargement pills
- cyclopssmiley, on 12/09/2007, -1/+80What about the snorg tees girl?!
- frozenelf, on 12/09/2007, -1/+75953,000th? Did he win a prize?
- frazw, on 12/09/2007, -0/+69I don't believe you. I don't think anyone in 1995 would want that ad back. In fact they probably sent it away and it arrived here.
- mlostracco, on 12/09/2007, -6/+73953,000th occurrence of that joke. in Digg comments. Time to put it to bed.
- octopi, on 12/09/2007, -6/+72I literally had one banner that said I was the 10,00th visitor and another one on the same page that said I was the 5,000th visitor.
IT WASN'T A JOKE!!! - john2kx, on 12/09/2007, -1/+67In parallel universes, everyone is the 10,000th visitor.
- bjornski, on 12/09/2007, -2/+62Yes, they do allow lies in ads. That's what the "fine print" is for.
And no, TV stations DO NOT have to tell you the truth. FOX was brought to court on that matter, and won their right to keep spreading falsehoods.
---------
FOX appealed the case, and on February 14, 2003 the Florida Second District Court of Appeals unanimously overturned the settlement awarded to Akre. The Court held that Akre’s threat to report the station’s actions to the FCC did not deserve protection under Florida’s whistle blower statute, because Florida’s whistle blower law states that an employer must violate an adopted “law, rule, or regulation." In a stunningly narrow interpretation of FCC rules, the Florida Appeals court claimed that the FCC policy against falsification of the news does not rise to the level of a "law, rule, or regulation," it was simply a "policy." Therefore, it is up to the station whether or not it wants to report honestly.
During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre’s claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so. After the appeal verdict WTVT general manager Bob Linger commented, “It’s vindication for WTVT, and we’re very pleased… It’s the case we’ve been making for two years. She never had a legal claim.”

Let me repeat the important sentences. "During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves."
And they took that ruling and RAN with it. - ManufactrsDfect, on 12/09/2007, -4/+64Anyone notice that Digg "diggs" are getting worse and worse?
- danielce, on 12/09/2007, -5/+63 --- do --- not --- use --- immageshack --- ever! ---
the pics go down after 3 ***** hits.... - postitnote, on 12/09/2007, -3/+59A bitmap? ***** you.
- rlahiff, on 12/09/2007, -1/+56No Kevin is the smart one for getting paid by a company that thinks we are stupid. Kevin knows how bad these ads are I'm sure and laughs when he gets their check in the mail.
- Player0ne, on 12/09/2007, -3/+57No It was Me
- mlostracco, on 12/09/2007, -1/+54Click the green thumb to claim.
- elvenseven, on 12/09/2007, -1/+51Thanks to Digg's advertising partner Microsoft, everyone's getting a prize.
- radioday, on 12/09/2007, -3/+50More like "You're the 1st female vistor. Click here to claim."
Now that truly would be a historic day for the digg community. - aprocter, on 12/09/2007, -3/+50LOSE! *****! There's one O! Unless you're talking about being sexually promiscuous, you mean lose.
- MikeonTV, on 12/09/2007, -0/+45I dont know what I was thinking. - http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2305/2096821164_4c2 ...
- jrmcgrath13, on 12/09/2007, -0/+44Is that Real Player in your quick launch bar?
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -1/+44I think you are overestimating diggers intelligence a bit.
- Myztry, on 12/09/2007, -0/+43The 10,000th visitor thing is foremost a lie. So technically they're right about it not being a joke. It certainly isn't funny.
False and misleading advertising is illegal is many countries (like Australia). At the very least these ads should be getting pulled due the TOS breaches with the ad companies. But instead these companies just bitch when people install adblockers to tackle the problem. A bit of self regulation wouldn't go astray. - lonnieh, on 12/09/2007, -7/+48somewhere there are two girls who consider a cup of fecal matter a nice prize
- tyywebb, on 12/09/2007, -10/+49Thanks for this story, but I thought everyone on digg uses adblock?
- cococooky, on 12/09/2007, -0/+39Try more than a million
- blackeagle613, on 12/09/2007, -1/+38one time I was the millionth visitor on a website... is was great
