- ptrcd003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47So, how many weeks till the sellout?
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29im gonna miss youtube
- stisaac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23At least 3. You need 3 weeks to fire the spokesperson and blame everything on him, and then completely change policy.
- karmakanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I've met Chad (the YouTube offices are a couple of blocks from here in San Mateo), and he's a pretty smart guy.
I don't know what he's up to, but I can tell you that he's not dumb enough to walk away from good money. If I had to guess, I'd say that this was a public way of politely saying to someone, "No, thank you." If the offer came with serious strings attached, or from someone who wanted to seriously change how they're doing things, then you'd be hearing exactly what he's saying.
They'll sell, but on their own terms. They're in the driver's seat here, and will continue to be for another year or so. They're just waiting for the right offer. - RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Ya, they'll stay independent until their venture capital runs out and they realize they're about to go ***** up.
- sithmat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"We are developing a better product and continuing to innovate because we have the best team to do so. We want to stay independent and will continue to develop the product for our users."

"We're just holding out for a $1 billion bid." - venir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I am glad to hear that at least they are *attempting* to stay independant. If a buyout happens the Youtube we know and love will probably be long gone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Sell for millions and retire to the Carribean and surround yourself with naked models and bags of weed. Thats how I would do it!
- karmakanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Okay - the naked models sound pretty good.
- srini91, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I beg to differ - It looks like's this guy is the very definition of Entrepreneur. He's telling us to exit a dying market and go where the money always is - prostitution and drugs.
- willin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16The way I translate it is they can't find anyone interested in buying them.
- ThinkFr33ly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11YouTube is .COM at its best.
They offer a service which they currently do very little to monetize.
They have massive operating costs due to that very service (bandwidth costs are incredible).
The service itself has a great chance of being shut down in the near future thanks to the fact that much of its popularity and usage comes from the distribution of copyrighted materials without permission.
If I were a stakeholder in that company I would cash out ASAP. - ardellin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12somehow I doubt that
- TheTalentedMrC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I don't. What's the current bandwidth bill now? I know it's more than $1 mil a month. Who wants to shoulder that kind of overhead from a website that hasn't found profitability yet?
- kratos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They do not want to remain indepenent they are just reminding everyone they are for sale
- derlin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10well, atleast they mean no harm
- Badaudio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8youtube is great, all this pirated content and no filled up hard drive

"We get bored too easily. We just start looking for the Next Thing. It's in our blood."
We? - usefulidiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7theres a reason youtube execs are sitting in their nice offices, a huge website, and lots of options, you on the otherhand, dont, and have -3 diggs.
- willin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7To add to the bandwidth bill, there's the threat of lawsuits due to copyright infringement. John Battelle nails it:
http://battellemedia.com/archives/002745.php - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Slicedoranges, when did being on the Internet give you permission to be an *****? Why wasn't I notified?
- kevthecatslayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sell before you can't keep up and implode.
- karmakanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4...and falling.
- illegalchuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Couldn't agree more with the last three posters. Absolutely cash out. Youtube definitely has a short shelf life.
In an unrelated note, does anyone else think the CEO looks like Kevin Federline? - Kalluas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe they're trying to sell it but Yahoo and Google wised up.
Yeah that doesn't sound right. - aldenhg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good to hear, but it will be very interesting to see if they can keep it up.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4but they won't be able to pay the bandwidth bills on their own...
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Let's just say that YouTube has some advantages for now, but they will lose them quickly.
YouTube's only hope is to build up community participation further. I'm not so sure that can ever be done, because most users are not contributors. Posting comments isn't enough to maintain an audience on a video site, unlike on a site like Digg where the comments/community interaction are pretty much the main content. - thepunishert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I remember Kevin Rose said something similar on old episode of twit
- jwigum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think you mean "on the RIAA radar", as opposed to under it. Flying "under the radar" is harkening back to when radar warning systems had to have "ignore" limits so that they wouldn't pick up things like trees blowing in the wind, waves, etc. When a stealthy approach by air was desired, you'd fly in this zone, coming in "under the radar" detection height.
Or something like that. - karmakanic, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10You'd never make it as an entrepreneur, my friend.
Real entrepreneurs don't retire. We get bored too easily. We just start looking for the Next Thing. It's in our blood. - Brahma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Darn..I can't comment anything like that..I have put my real name (now that's utter stupidity) and my wife also visits digg..
- cedrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A)sell and destroy youtube forever
B)put paypal donation links
C)dont sell and go bankrupt for the sake of preserving youtube
D)they sell to someone who keeps the youtube we know and love (yeah, cuz that's gonna happen) - Atom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Look all it takes is ONE VIDEO to have a lawsuit. Very few equals a couple of very costly lawsuits. Spread that out over a couple of different conglomorates and youre in some serious serious trouble. They need to cash out asap.
- loganrapp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The thing about YouTube is that it IS an "orgy" of sorts. Anything and everything goes, which is a large part of its appeal. I do know that plenty of people host their videos that would otherwise go unnoticed because how does one get a video out there, short of making it a podcast? (But then, what would be the point if you're only doing one video?)
Am I saying that, without the copyright stuff, it'll still be this massive hub? Oh, hell no. It'll lose a majority of its traffic. But I kinda hope that'll happen, and then we can more easily see the amateur videos where there's some genius happening, instead of being distracted by the overdone commercialized videos that just turn into so many buzzwords for teeny boppers and Hot Topic patrons. - gd007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there is high chance whatever he makes from youtube will be lost in the next venture. how many times you get lucky?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wooow there, selling themselves is not a good idea at all.
Because it will not be the same YouTube we have came to love, it will become a corporate site.
Where people suggestions and opinions will never reach the owners.
Try complaining to AOL that you can't get screenname because all of them are all taken, you should be crowned king/queen even if they reply. - tek69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Poor youtube, stuck between "if they don't sell they're stupid *****" and "if they sell they're sellout *****". You guys are never ***** happy.
may the digg down commence... - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wish Skype had done the same thing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1youtube isnt that great. its just a fad, they need widescreen like google video and they need to take down unpopular stuff way faster, more room for new good *****
- Jangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A lot of people are yelling SELL SELL SELL, however no one wants to buy Youtube right now. There seems to be no money to be made of the current (READ: non-existent business model) They need to cut bandwidth down somewhow.
I would get some ads on the site to cover some of the cost, and not allow embed so that people would actually go to the site. This would restrict the amount of badnwitdth to a degree because I think that most is being sucked up by embedded videos. Also this will bring suers to the site where the ads can be seen.
this might suck for us users but this is a matter of life ro death for youtube. I do not seem them going under simply because so many people use it. That market is so large there an has potential to reach so many people. I see a buyout at lower cost when they are desperate and on the edge of going under.
sorry for the long post. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1YouTube is my favourite video website. It is immensely popular and I can only think they are waiting for the right deal to come along. As previously mentioned, they are in the drivers seat. There's no need to jump at the first decent offer they get, hold out and I'm sure someone else will invest.
- soloride, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"...much of its popularity and usage comes from the distribution of copyrighted materials without permission."
Where did you get your facts? Are you just guessing that most of its popularity comes from copyrighted materials? I have watched about 2000 videos on youtube and I would say that most of material is user made content. Also if you look at the top 100 videos of all time very few of them are copyrighted material:
http://www.youtube.com/browse?s=mp&t=a
Also for as many people as they are reaching I don't think $1 million in bandwidth per month is that bad. I think YouTube will be very profitable. Yes that is a guess too! I don't have time to write why I think it will be. I have to watch some more youtube.
Maybe someone can do the calculations of how much each video would have to make to be profitable. Right now their videos downloads a day are at a 100 million. - antigoogle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best team, best product??? that's *****! What you do is just serving FMS content and anybody with >=$10M funding can do it...
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All I heard was "bid higher".
- AnImAl999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I kinda have to agree.. Eventually user generated content may fizzle out... But then again John Dvorak is also saying digg will die out as well.. Umm.. No... I do agree they should sell and cash out... As long as they don't end up like atom films.. ;-p
- Xizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do you people want them to sell out anyway? YouTube is great, the minute they sell out it's going to suck ass. Ads plastered everywhere, strict rules, lots of limits, et cetera
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Go Chad Hurley!
- popltree2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With what has to be approaching $2m/month in bandwidth bills, they will be hard-pressed to find a company that will buy them. And with only $10m in the bank as of about 4 months ago, YouTube is either going to have to a) find the next Yahoo! who takes the plunge, much like Yahoo did with Flikr, b) form some sort of business model, or c) implement some sort of a more robust advertising system.
- Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't going to work unless they find a way to capitalize on their service... =)
