- 10goto10, on 11/18/2008, -6/+41I hope they track down this guy and check if he actually never gave someone up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jdk0AejE7IA
- vango, on 11/18/2008, -1/+19Like anyone believes the things they see on YouTube?
- 3tcp, on 11/18/2008, -2/+19This is nothing more than a power grab by a federal bureaucracy in an attempt to make themselves more relevant. The goal of the BBB is a good one and it should be preserved, but no government department has the authority to make blanket statements regarding the extent of their jurisdiction. They can say it and will probably use it as ground to justify requests for expanding their budget, but that's just what government bureaucracies do. If they ever tried to enforce something like this against a company that could afford to and was determined to fight the issue out in court, I'd like the think that the BBB wouldn't have much of a case.
Viral marketing just takes advantage of the gullibility of idiots, just like any advertising does. I'd say it's actually preferable since it just tricks idiots into paying attention, all it gets them is recognition of their product. How useful is that? The segway has lots of name recognition but no one is stupid enough to buy one. Showing stupid people how easily they're deceived by publicity stunts without needing them to spend money on something useless is a community service. It teaches them to be skeptical outlandish claims. Maybe if we had more attempts at viral marketing we could cut down on the number of colon-cleansing and diet pill fads that scam idiots into flushing millions of dollars down the toilet every year. - samtorx, on 11/19/2008, -0/+13How about the one where there's that one guy saying "The fundamentals of our economy are strong"?
- reallytempting2, on 11/18/2008, -1/+13I wonder how they can enforce/regulate something like this?
- GDOG5, on 11/19/2008, -0/+10We have reached the point of relevant Rick Rolling.
- cinder, on 11/19/2008, -0/+8IT WAS A SOUNDSTAGE ON MARS
- RyomaNagare, on 11/19/2008, -0/+7Btw Rick Astley actually let me down, He had a concert scheduled in my country, tickets were sold, then it got cancelled. -_-
- doiveo, on 11/18/2008, -3/+10Makes sense. Parody is one thing but the opportunity to lie at the expense of a competitor is pretty tempting. Corporate swift boating should be illegal.
- Spoomeister, on 11/19/2008, -0/+7Thank goodness there will be a government agency I can turn to when I wonder if something will blend.
- jeevesatvic, on 11/18/2008, -1/+7I doubt this will have much impact. Most viral campaigns are fairly abstract and focus on enhancing peoples perception of a brand. They don't often make specific claims about a product.
- r0gue6, on 11/19/2008, -1/+6The BBB has no power to do anything.
They are just a figure of mediation, nothing else.
This means nothing. - Pzycho, on 11/18/2008, -1/+6It's just like a mini-mall?
- insllvn, on 11/19/2008, -1/+5So long as this is only used against corporations attempting to sell a product (or disparage an competitor's product), and never used to silence artistic, individual expression , I have no issue with this. This is what the BBB is for, making sure we are not constantly bombarded by lies and misinformation to the extent that even a critical mind would have to spend all their time fact checking stuff like whether Coca-Cola cures AIDS.
- pckbeta, on 11/19/2008, -1/+5(INSERT SNAPPY BUT ULTIMATELY IDIOTIC REPLY HERE)
- meghalc, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4Oh the agencies want to police everything. That why we have the internet.
- pckbeta, on 11/19/2008, -1/+4Meh, close enough.
- Tichondrius74, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3That guy sucks. I hope he loses.
- Sagags, on 11/19/2008, -4/+7***** THE RIAA
- Shadoblak, on 11/19/2008, -1/+3...Rorschach?
- uncleosbert, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2i don't think the description is totally accurate: only advertisers will have to adhere to the standards. remember people, you have the right to free speech so long as you're not selling anything besides yourself. politicians do not adhere to these standards, in case you didn't notice the recent demonstration in the election:

- DrLeePhD, on 11/19/2008, -1/+3Does this mean no more "PowerTHIRST"? They might exaggerate a little but it sounds like good stuff.
- maspaz, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Arbitrarily.
Oh and btw, shady companies ARE members of the BBB; that's how they legitimize their operation.
Case in point? Johnny Melia Moving in Houston- scumbags unrepentantly ripping off little old ladies and other unsuspecting customers with their hidden costs and other 3 card monty style bs. - heavyd14, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2They can't. The BBB only reports complaints.
- dienaked, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2They can enforce and regulate what their members do, not anyone else.
Why do you think shady companies aren't members of the BBB? - inactive, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2 But you can't know if the video is viral until after it's made. What are they saying, that every video on the internet has to meet these standards just in case?
- megaton, on 11/19/2008, -1/+2I hate to say it, but the fundamentals of our economy ARE strong. There are HUGE, GAPING holes in what's allowed/unregulated, but the fundamentals really are sound. Had this happened, oh, say, around 1928, we'd be in a world of hurt. We ain't doin too bad, all things considered.
Now, had he said, "the economy are strong," we'd know he's just spitting out Dubbya-talk. - kermalou, on 11/19/2008, -1/+2The BBB is the biggest scam in the history of scams.
You have to pay them for a good story. Just utter crap. - TWiThead, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Parody of the viral video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEl7QqoPH9c
- AmericanParty, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1That why we wonder how babby is formed
- sigafoo, on 11/19/2008, -1/+2I assume this may be something to hold businesses accountable who use viral marketing
- Inflammo, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Oh, I seeeee
- UNL1M1T3D, on 11/19/2008, -2/+3I believe the comments are almost always retarded and yet for some odd reason I always find myself reading them.
(INSERT DIGG COMMENT JOKE HERE) - inactive, on 11/19/2008, -1/+2teehee you said "colon"
- MWeather, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1"I wonder how they can enforce/regulate something like this?"
Via strongly worded letters. - dienaked, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1The BBB can only police members of their organization who VOLUNTARILY join.
If a company isn't a BBB member, the BBB won't/can't do anything. - shig, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1"The fundamental business of the country, that is, production and distribution of commodities, is on a sound and prosperous basis." - Herbert Hoover, Thursday, Oct. 24, 1929
- frosted, on 11/19/2008, -0/+0Maybe we can get this snake oil salesman:
