- donte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It doesn't wreck anything. Lots of people create videos specifically to post on youtube to generate hits to their site so they can make some advertisement dollars. Nobody considers that such a terrible thing. A company tries to generate buzz for their product and it becomes shady? Congrats diggers on another retarded double standard.
Besides, like a number of people have said... if the community (the poor defenseless community) doesn't like the commercial or tactics, they'd bury it. But they're not... so it sounds like most people just don't give a damn... or even better enjoy the commercials.
Lame. - NJank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11unless they somehow manipulate the view count, I don't see how it manipulates it. Is there a non-commercial clause in the YouTube AUP? (apart from copyright issues for other people's commercials). Popularity is what get's things to the front page. If it's a good commercial, and gets to the front, great. That means people were entertained by it and that's what it's there for. If it doesn't, it gets buried. There are a bunch of commercials on YouTube. Who submits it shouldn't matter. Now, really, they should figure out how to capitalize on this if companies want to use youtube as an advertising medium. But they shouldn't not be able to post them.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Its called viral marketing.
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'll make sure my youtube videos include wendy's material now ;)
- dennisplucinik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's retarded that this made any news. The commentary on the page says it all - uploading 2 videos to a network which gets 65,000+ uploads per day isn't going to make any noise unless they're good videos.
Maybe Wendy's hired a news agency to cover it like it was important too. - falstaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How is this different than thousands of other videos that end with a url fadeout? Probably half the videos on YouTube are watermarked. What's the big flipping deal? There are only two kinds of video on sites like this: Original, dull crap that gets 3 views a year because somebody thought it was something else, and popular videos that get spread around to every video sharing site and end with some form of advertising for that site. In other words, nearly every video worth watching has some kind of advertising in it. Wendy's didn't cross any line. This has got to be the stupidest "controversy" ever.
- w0rd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I can't imagine they are the first to do this. Corporations have been manipulating the Internet for a while now.
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41. Two videos != spam.
2. "dont feed the trolls"
3. Inaccurate. - dggeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Viral marketing is when consumers spread the content. This is an ad agency getting paid to spread the word, and apparently getting a little over zealous.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, its called digg.com
- a1532b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't get it, wendy's created these things for youtube. They aren't traditional advertising but they get the point across. I thought these were pretty good, too. Its voluntary to watch, also. You don't have to sit through the thing like a commerical. You choose to play it and you choose to watch it. This is hardly spam.....
Those commercials made me hungry, I'm gonna head over to wendys. - devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3now Digg get's spammed with Wendys Hamburgers
- r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The opportunity is pretty clear for marketers, unless they kill the goose. But rather than flooding sites like YouTube with TV-like spots, they should create video campaigns elsewhere that build a fan base. And then let the fans upload those commercials to YouTube. Then it’s not spam but viral marketing."
BRILLIANT!
So instead of Wendys submitting on their own, Wendys should enlist the aid of bloggers to upload the files for them. So instead of 1 copy of the Wendys advertisement on GooTube... there'll be HUNDREDS!
For an article raising alarms of spam.. the irony runs deep.
Way to go genius blogger dude, you've just killed GooTube! - anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK, I would like to retract my initial statement, the commercial I saw was hilarious, these two showcased here are stupid.
- tracespeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wendys is getting it's moneys worth for its advertising seeing as how this is on the front page of digg, being discussed on blogs, and obviously being watched on youtube.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The real viral advertising here is posting these crappy videos to digg and calling them "clever, edgy or entertaining."
- spanner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why the fuss? Seems to be happening here as well. As far as spam goes its pretty inoffensive.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4THIS IS NOT SPAM! Just because a video is created by a company does not make it spam - especially when there are only 2 posted.
Bury this crap. - lprono77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm getting tired of people crying about "Spam" and holding up some ethical standard that everyone needs to accept. Here is the reality: if it's possible to do it, it will be done. That means if a company can post videos on Youtube, and it helps their brand, they will do it. It also means that if people can post stories on Digg that link to their blog rather than the source, they will do it. Ethics will not stop this. If you want to stop it you have to make it impossible to do it - which, I'm afraid, is impossible.
- drewskyjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mmmmmm...I'm eating a Wendy's Cheeseburger now...I say let them post them up and if people like them, they'll get lots of views. Or if people don't like them they will go nowhere. I wouldn't have heard about it if it wasn't on digg or other sites I frequent...I'm an occasional YouTuber. So while technically what Wendys did is not spamming, I won't mark as inaccurate...I am glad to see the post on Digg so I can check them out and decide if their videos are as good as their burgers :-)
- narduk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If YouTube doesn’t police commercial video spam, users will be alienated."
Why? Please substantiate this claim. - solisnk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Have they removed the traditional frosty?" Traditional = Chocolate. I work at a Wendy's, Ours never got the new flavor of the summer, Vanilla.
"i just dont get wendys, square burgers?" They're actually easier to cook on the grill. 4-corner press! - kepper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It becomes a problem if, say 1/3 of those 65,000 vids are spam/marketing/whatever videos. Then, you will have to sift through all of the garbage to get to what you really intended to see(not unlike it is today). Yet more of my valuable time lost. I'm sure I will get disinterested in YouTube once this becomes a problem.
And, for crying out loud, why does Wendy's need to really advertise anyway? - MrPlug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just dont get wendys, square burgers?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah, I am all for viral marketing if it's funny. There is something cynical about advertising as entertainment, but hey, I have worked on Madison Avenue, and this is the world we live in...
- followme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Speaking of, http://digg.com/videos_comedy/suspended_Wendy_s_meal_prank
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had seen a wendy's video on youtube that I found to be rather funny, I thought that this article was talking about that video, I made the post. When I saw the videos that were in the link I realized that this was not the same thing. It is pretty clear if you read.
- Beernutz14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mmmmmm Wendy's....
- bs3arch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The videos were posted by bbv99, not real people :p
- a10webb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I would not consider this to be spam. But it is completely shameless advertising on, then again I don't think any corporations have shame or know what it is anymore.
- 5plic3r, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Any press is good press.
- bs3arch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dave Thomas didn't cut corners.
- tomtucker378, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2those have got to be two of the stupidest videos i've ever seen.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a good thing. Remember AdCritic? Remember AdCritic when it was free?
I want EVERY commercial on YouTube so if I like one I can pass it along to friends.
I would hope corperations would be smart enough to upload commercials to YouTube! - Beernutz14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just watched the commercials they are not that bad, i dont really get the whole dipping fries in the frosty thing though... thats kind of nasty
- videoCT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not a bad video actually. Damn, I could sure go for a Wendy's hamburger right about now.
- thehans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This sucks, soon we'll all be playing advertising Russian Roulette whenever we watch a video.
- TjLAXattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the website:
"You know what makes for really great laundry detergent? Wendy's Barbecue Sauce."
"Really?"
"Nope." - meltingrobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Those cheeky bastards!
- lord138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats exactly the point, 2 videos among thousands.
It's an incredible idea for advertising. Play edgy, almost defaming advertisements to a crowd that sucks that kind of thing up, almost for free.
I'm just suprised wendy's was the first to do it, and not coke or nike or some other big name - thehans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think we need to coin a new term for this practice. Instead of SPAMMED, how about BURGERED, or in honor of Wendy's malfeasance GINGERED. You Tube was GINGERED by Wendy's today.
- jjallday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If Dave Thomas was still alive, he'd be bodyslamming whoever's idea this was.
- RidinDirty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One more grain of sand on the beach of crap that is youtube.
- GrayV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only problem here is that Wendy's (or their agency) did it so badly.
If you do it well, the YouTube audience likes what you've done. If you get caught doing it well, it's not done well.
Wendy's were stupid and naive. Get ready for more of that. - gu014, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whats up with wendys anyway. i recently asked for a 'frosty' in the drivethru and was asked 'vanilla or chocolate?' Have they removed the traditional frosty?
- InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem is that they are leaching service from YouTube for commercial purposes without compensation to YouTube. In addition, YouTube is supposed to be a site for amatuer videos, not an advertising dumping ground.
- Haohmaru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If anyone didn't realize those were commercials... eat at Wendy's!
I have no pity. - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Edit: digg down please
- ThisIsBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who is going to see them, except some zonked out voidoid living in their parent's basement and clicking on every new Gootube video as it is uploaded?
