- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+76So basically we all wish we had the same idea they did.
- bitt3n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+61I don't. I just wish a suitcase with $650 M would fall out of the sky into my lap. Screw the idea.
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46Digg has nowhere near the chops to lick of YouTube. YouTube's referenced by MAINSTREAM media all the time, and in fact some of them actually have partnerships with GooTube. Digg is most often referenced by the circlejerk that is Web 2.0 media. Digg pales in comparison to YouTube. The common person uses YouTube -- Joe Desk Jockey, Jane Blue Collar. Only techies and a VERY marginal portion of a wider demographic use Digg.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32I wish they would add a download button, thats all.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -12/+35"YouTube founders split $650M payout"
... as Kevin Rose lips his chops in anticipation. - ThinkFr33ly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I have an awesome idea. I'm going to make a web site that let's you share video content.
Sure, the bandwidth costs will be absolutely insane... probably close to 1 million of dollars a month.
Sure, most of the popular content will be copyrighted, and we'll be infringing on those copyrights.
Sure, we don't actually have any real way to make money off the site. Ads won't do much because the cost of the bandwidth is so high.
But to hell with all of that. Maybe some company with massive pockets will buy us for no discernible reason, other than the fact we will be wildly popular.
Classic Dot Com insanity, only 6 years later. - saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I wouldn't have even minded being an employee because Julie Supan, YouTube's principal spokeswoman, received 10,308 shares worth around $4.8 million.
Daaamn. - Crystallio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21A million dollars of $100 notes weighs about 22 pounds (http://www.faqs.org/qa/qa-11871.html). 22 * 650 = 14,300 pounds. I'd rather not have a suitcase that large fall in my lap.
- cr4ft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18First digg.com mention of YouTube

Sends shivers down my spine - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18We know who'll be flying private jets to the Superbowl next year.
- GravyTrain6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13
I still have my fingers crossed hoping that Google doesn't change YouTube to much.
I hope they change it to even more. (it's amazing how big of a difference the correct usage of "to" and "too" make) - Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10All you need is that one idea.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9actually, they don't really have money, they just have shares of Google... If Google tanked tomorrow they would have nothing. Not likely to happen, but technically they don't have the money unless they sell the stock... however, that will pay one hell of a dividend...
- listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Pfft. I wish I had a better idea.
In fact, I think I do.
Mark my words: in due time, digg will feature a story about how I sold out for billions. Some day... some day. The world will know the name 'listrophy,' and all will tremble at the name. muahahaha!
*shakes head* *blinks*
aww, still at work. - saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I plan to digg this story up. Who's with me? You know... to commemorate Chad and Steve's success.

"Big tittied women don't just fall out of the sky, you know!?"
-Quote from Dogma - TopBanana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's the execution that is key not the idea
- aloser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4By the same token, if the US economy tanked tomorrow people with cash would have nothing either.. Hence their worth is as "real" as it comes.. Maybe not as liquid as it could be, but that doesn't make it any less "real"
- ThinkFr33ly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5A lot of people DID have the same idea, but didn't have the connections to extremely deep VC pockets and had the sense to try and start a business that actually had a way to make money.
Do you honestly think these guys were the first to thing "hey, sharing video will be the next big thing"? Give me a break. Everybody and their mom thought that, but they also realized it was cost prohibitive given the architecture of the net.
These guys got *extremely* lucky and had the right connections. If Google didn't buy them when they did, bankruptcy would have followed in 6 to 9 months, even with a 3rd round of VC. - xtrvd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3To download the content, you can either download a youtube viewer, or go to your browser's cache (C:Documents and SettingsUserNameLocal SettingsApplication DataMozillaFirefoxProfilesdb3rw6vk.defaultCache for firefox) and find the most recently modified files and add .flv to the end of them to see if they are the flash video's or not. After you've determined the right ones (Generally, the bigger the file, the more likely it's to be the flash file you just downloaded) you save them to another location on your computer for storage.
Easy as pie.
(And use VLC to view the .flv files) - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I still have my fingers crossed hoping that Google doesn't change YouTube to much.
- joshua5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well, to all the nay sayers and haters, they have millions of dollars and you do not
- stormlifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Stocks cost them money... It's not free, someone owned those stocks and bought them at one point.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that's true that none of us "really" have money, we just have bits of paper that the government says are worth something.. if you really want to have money that's not going to go away, you have to put it into something like gold, which, although it fluctuates, is always going to be worth something... unless people decide that shiny metal is not worth anything..
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+338 now. Lets get it to the front page.
- a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's great. Now I hope they can give YouTube better search capablities. I know you can now use Google for that, but I want to filter out all those freaks who do home videos of themselves singing some ridiculous song or other crap.
- nailz420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They should set up a blog and document what crazy things they do with their money every day. I would so read that...
- Woknblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2belongs in World&Business.
- alteratti, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8In Soviet Russia, shares split you.
- derat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are lots of extensions that allow you to download - here is the first one I found but I know there are others, possibly better...
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2390/ - kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have said extensions however it is far easier to download an MP4 which can be played in almost anything then an flv.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2they are planning to cash them in
http://valleywag.com/tech/take-money%2C-run/the-great-youtube-cashout-234941.php - cr4ft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Everyone digg up the first youtube article on digg
http://digg.com/tech_news/YouTube.com_-_A_Flickr_type_tool_for_videos - hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+228 Diggs now
- maldrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm with you. Lets digg!
- cramd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+ And Office Manager Shannon Hermes won't have to answer any more phones or take notes as her shares are worth $1.2M
- DannySpace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I wish they would add a download button, thats all."
-
Just download the "get video" file from the source, and change the extention to .flv - Afterwards, there are many plugins that allow quicktime to play flv files. Done! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good for them. Shows innovation can still make you a lot of dough in the US of A. I wish them luck.
- silentavenger24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if its all in stock isn't there a possiblity of them losing alot of it if the big google stock price drops?
- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@kingkilr
iirc, there's a ff extension that lets you download youtube videos - norcim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So let me get this straight...
Mark Cuban becomes a billionaire for selling Broadcast.com to Yahoo.
These buys become millionaires for selling YouTube to Google.
I say they got screwed a little bit. Or maybe its just the sign of the times... - encognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The third co-founder, Jawed Karim, received stock valued at around $64.6 million. After starting the company in early 2005, he backed out and returned to Stanford University to work on a graduate degree in computer science."
So, the true cost of his graduate degree is about $250 million? Ouch. - martx80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google pays with what is called Treasury Stock. That is stock Google bought back from the secondary market at some point. Not just paper they made up.
- szembek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Submitter apparently doesn't understand what a "tech deal" is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2kinda like milliondollarhopepage idea or his new one that involves you winning money if you click on the right pixel on the page.
- giggg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's many more good ideas that you people have not thought about. Want to join an entrepreneur? Email me then. We'll make millions too.
- stormlifter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1right, google stock dropping, funny. I suppose that's possible, but much more possible that their money would be worth more tomorrow than it is today, never mind in a year.
- irobotics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wish I came up with the idea first
- TwwIX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1why can't have me some of dat moneyz?
:( - rpearson17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wishing is for those who choose not to put forth any effort as well...it was a great deal that advanced interactive sites and made people take notice...write that down!
