- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40Muhuhahahaha... the demise of television.
- crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39This is earth shattering! I mean, how could they ever come up with the conclusion that if you spend more time doing one thing, then you will spend less time doing another.
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17i don't frequent youtube but i have started to heavily rely on downloading the tv shows i wanted to watch just so that theres no commercials. i have quit watching a video on a site if they had an ad in the beginning even if i wanted to really see the vid.
plus with firefox and adblock i haven't even seen an ad in months/years. - DarkDays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I've been "watching less tv" since I started using computers. Well, mostly since "the ineternets".
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14^^^^
cut down with the groping - wild, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17...has been predicted for years. It will always be around in some form.
- zombiedepot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10They need to come up with other ways to make money other than ad revenue. It's foolish to think the same thing that worked on TV will work on the internet, because of the degree of control computers offer over television. Other sites have tried the short ad idea and none of them were as popular as YouTube.
Personally, if I don't use a company's products already, I probably never will, and there is no funny commercial that will ever change that. - korimickster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@Chompy
Because three months is about three months longer than watching it the next day. - doolittle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5not so much television but the commercial timeslot. If TIVO mandated the network's plans so you could not skip commercials via fast-forward I would definitly cancel my service and get a home brew mythtv.
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5wouldnt that be TV too?
Except that it came via the tubes - IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I feel you mate.
- isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If ads really do make everything free, why is my cable bill still $60 a month???
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What other forms do you suggest? Ads pay for just about anything you can get for free (legally). That being said, I hate watching a movie on TV (or just about anything). I was watching something the other day. They showed about 6-7 minutes of movie then 4 or so minutes of commercial. That just crazy.
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7TV aint going anywhere. sure its popularity will decrease but its gonna be around for a long long time. In fact I see it getting more better with time with more interactive features.
- ChrisrWilliams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4TV was fun, but it's dying. Eventually, IPTV will dominate.
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Resist Ads"
Who doesn't? - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So basically, you just don't want to pay for stuff?
Shows don't just grow on trees. They cost money, and the good ones usually cost more money than most.
Commercials may go to the networks, but the networks pay the shows. If the networks don't make any money, the network won't buy the shows. It's that simple.
One of the reasons that Firefly bombed was because none of its fanbase watched it on the air, they all downloaded it instead. This depressed the Nielson ratings for the show, and FOX canceled it.
Long story short: If you want to keep a show on the air, watch the broadcast. - FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I also hate television, but I can't help myself if Family Guy or South Park, or any Adult Swim cartoon is on. I do frequent YouTube very much, but, I notice on MetaCafe I think that every now and then a 1 minute commercial will show. That really doesn't bother me. And if it does I just hit back and then go forward again and its usually gone. Not that big of a deal really.
- robdavy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Personally, if I don't use a company's products already, I probably never will, and there is no funny commercial that will ever change that."
And wtf? So how did you start using Digg? Or any other new product for that matter? Of course you'll start using a companies product when you don't already. What a ridiculous thing to say... - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I don't even own a TV, and I haven't owned one for the past 3 full years. I don't need a TV when I have computers and other things to keep me busy. Why be stuck with what programming is on TV, when you can research things for yourself online?
@rudy: lol - Retsudo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's kind of like spam. If there weren't idiots who were suckered into buying things (spam/ advertised ***** they don't need/want) then the rest of us wouldn't have to deal with it, and we'd all be better off.
Ad companies do not deserve money any more than spammers do. In fact, they are just another kind of spammer, although SLIGHTLY more legitimate. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Startling discovery! You mean people want to watch tv/movies without ads/commercials?? How could this be??
But seriously, if youtube starts with ads in the videos, i will quit going for sure. Unless the increase the amount of upload to lets say umm 900 megs a video? - korimickster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Internet Killed the Video Star"
Liam Lynch FTW - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't watch ads before videos on Youtube .... there's tons of videos that wouldn't exceed the length of an ad even! That would just waste more people's time ... ridiculous
- falstaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't have Tivo, but I do have broadband. I don't even do torrents, all the decent shows are on the networks' sites.
Bill Gates says the Internet will revolutionize TV within 5 years. I say he's about 5 years behind the curve. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm definately watching less TV because of Youtube, livevideo and good ol bittorrent.
The only reason why I still have cable, is because my apt complex basically forces all of us to have it in our rent. - 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I got rid of my TV as well
it's great to think for yourself
it's sad how many people do not
now back to our broadcast... = - zappo1776, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I sold my TV a few years ago and I don't miss it. I watched my friend's giant HDTV and to me it's just louder and more annoying in HD. Same limited content. Internet video is only going to get better as bandwidth increases. I don't see myself ever buying a TV again.
- ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why doesn't youtube do what Revver does? Put ads at the END of the clip. I wouldn't care, and it would help youtube out a LOT for all the bandwidth they use.
- Retsudo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, I meant slightly more legitimate, because ads (at least in this country, which isn't the US) have to follow certain rules and guidelines about what they are selling, i.e. there does actually have to be a tangible product of some sort, however useless or ***** it is.
Spammers, on the other hand, just want to take the money and run, and have no intention of giving anything to the 'customer.'
Although I reiterate that I'd be happy to have both sets of people ***** and burned. - RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YouTube killed the television star just doesn't have the same ring to it.
- 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People that quit watching TV and don't miss it, are obviously not sports fans. They don't ESPN HD on YouTube.
- LocalDocal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to agree with Mand.
I used to be a huge fan of GameTrailers despite their obvious and annoying flaws. However, they soon started showing ads and were even paying users to watch them. Nonetheless, after a while, it just got frustrating and I eventually stopped going. I highly doubt I'm an exceptional case and I do believe many others will do the same in a similar situation. - cyberscape2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have an ad image at the end of each clip.
- animefx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't watch a lot of TV, but I do buy a lot of DVDs of TV shows. If a show is worth seeing I usually like to watch a few episodes in a row, and without commericials I'm actually savings myself time.
YouTube is great but I can only stand so many goofy videos at lower than DVD quality before I need to do something else. (and yes I'm responsible for a few of those) - superspak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i rarely go to youtube because dailymotion has most of the tv episodes on their servers
- goonmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could Skype's Joost take over?
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this wont be the demise of television any more than television was the demise of radio...
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1off topic, but wasn't that why the TV remote control was invented? Cos the CEO of the company (General Electric or something) hated ads on TV, so he got his engineers to come up with a device to turn the sound down during ad-breaks? Seems everyone is anti-ads, except for the TV stations who make a bundle of money from showing them. Subcription channels sans ads are the way to go.
- 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As long as there are live sports in HD, TV isn't going anywhere.
- Satertek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On sites like GameTrailers, where you have to watch a 30 second ad for a 1 minute gameplay video, more often than not I just close it out and look somewhere else.
- Mand0lesi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That may be true the first couple of times but after a long enough timespan, many will learn to not go there anymore.
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Also, 73% of frequent YouTube users say they would visit the site less if it started including short video ads before every clip"
I guarantee this would not happen. If the video ad is say, 30 seconds, most people - regardless of their answer to this survey - would simply say "Oh, it's only 30 seconds, I'll wait" and then carry on viewing their chosen video. - robdavy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ pcgeek101
What if the ad was 5 seconds? Kinda like the closed captioning ads on tv?
"This video is bought to you in part by McDonalds. I'm Loving It" - YeahOK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would limit my YouTube if this were to happen (which it will I bet). I see stories on CNN and Fox web sites but I just don't bother to watch because I cant stand watching the same frigging commercials over and over and over. I just refuse to watch the videos. If you ever goto CNN web site you'll notice that most of the top stories are now videos -- must be a good revenue stream for them...
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I dont watch commercials ever, TIVO FTW.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's an idea!
PAY FOR IT!!!
Added bonus: NO ADS!!!
Ads generally pay for the stuff you get for free. It's a fact of life that if companies don't make money, they won't make the shows. - ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think "arguably more legitimate" is what you meant.
And I argue that they're not any more legitimate than spammers.
What's not legitimate about a spammer? They're sending you 1 billion messages per hour trying to get you to buy something using the same ad over and over and over. My question is: have you watched TV lately? - foamweapons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised so many geeks watch sports. I get consistently dugg down when I comment that following sports seems boring, stupid, unimportant.
Actually, those -100 diggs were in the Sport Section when it was new to Digg... back then I thought Sports on Digg was a travesty, but I've come to learn to accept it. Just like how I've learned to accept people talking non-stop about Da Bears since I'm from Chicago and the Superbowl is tomorrow. Why couldn't they not be in the playoffs like most years? I'm so sick of hearing about it... especially when someone expects a response from me, ugh, Thank Science it's over tomorrow. - prisonplanetfan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I haven't watched TV in 2.5 years. I am more informed than I ever was because I rely on "non-mainstream" resources which i think is imperative in avoiding the "dumbing-down" process of the Globalists.
As far as YouTube goes .... it rocks!!! I am avid guitar player and I have a love/hate relationship with politics. YouTube cators to my passions like no other site. .... well, DIGG rocks out pretty good too :) -
