- fromedome, on 06/18/2008, -2/+62Wonder when hi-def is coming? Do any of you even want hi-def on YouTube?
- Surferess, on 06/18/2008, -2/+54I have a fairly short attention span, so I am not that in to the super-long videos. But it will be nice to watch a TV show Youtube on w/o having it split into 3 sections.
- benologist, on 06/19/2008, -0/+45I'd rather get good content first then worry about hi-def. Long videos + content partners can only mean they want to compete with Hulu and get some decent tv on there legitimately. Let them worry about hi-def next month.
- devinjohnson2, on 06/19/2008, -1/+45So it's basically just Google Video?
- ralphthemagi, on 06/19/2008, -1/+44No. Normal def would be just fine.
The problem is that YouTube is crap-def. H.263 320x240 @ 350Kbps is just pathetic. The 64Kbps mono audio doesn't help.
Only now is YouTube starting to step up to 480x360 video. That still isn't standard definition. How about some 640x480?
YouTube has become less and less relevant as the major networks have fiercely removed their content. It's still good for the occasional viral or tutorial video, but Hulu is actually starting to look like it's not crap. They need to make it about twice as fast as it already is. - cdawzrd, on 06/18/2008, -1/+42Yes.
- inactive, on 06/19/2008, -3/+44IM LOOKING FORWARD TO 30 MINUTE HIGH DEF RICKROLLS
- mentol, on 06/18/2008, -4/+44that's GREAT news
- h0merg0mez, on 06/18/2008, -3/+42I was treated to a low quality video of a jaguar ***** a mailbox. They might as well just call it jaguar tube from now on, cuz those are all the videos that get posted nowadays. Goddammit.
- bcaulfield, on 06/18/2008, -3/+41I want a 30 minute video about that skateboard-riding bulldog. Now.
- fireBLiND, on 06/19/2008, -2/+30I miss Stage6. =(
- ralphthemagi, on 06/19/2008, -0/+25I've always wanted to watch a movie at 320x240 or 480x360 with an appalling bitrate.
- kenvsryu, on 06/19/2008, -4/+29Extra long Chocolate Rain remix?
- Fihiro, on 06/19/2008, -0/+20The suspense is killing me!
- m0zzie, on 06/19/2008, -0/+16you owe me half a coffee and a new keyboard.
- cdawzrd, on 06/19/2008, -1/+15What an epic comment
- Whaines, on 06/19/2008, -0/+13You should try sipping.
- ivand67, on 06/19/2008, -1/+14How about changing their video player to widescreen and working on streaming HD already? Honestly... You can't enjoy a lot of things on YouTube. The quality just SUCKS.
- Gabberwok, on 06/19/2008, -2/+14Um, the reason for the 10 minute limit was to keep people from uploading full-length copies of copyrighted material. Now they're letting their "partners" upload longer format stuff. This isn't very big news, and don't expect the masses to be able to upload long videos anytime soon - we've been bad so we've lost those privileges.
- alphaterminus, on 06/19/2008, -0/+12I used to click on the "videos" tab to see what the most watched videos were, and some of them would be entertaining. Now they are mostly just spam with half naked ladies on the icon or are in a non English language. They should show the most popular videos based on your IP's country or at least let you place a preference for which "top videos" you want to see. Their top videos page looks like my spam box. I don't care about 巨乳サーファー、波にもまれてビ キニがポ, Crazy sex positions LIVE!, 特撮物のワンシーンで谷間チラ, or ***** ysb.capitulo 475 (2)!
- BugMeNot2, on 06/19/2008, -0/+12Flickr does video?
- pschommer, on 06/19/2008, -0/+11Look! A bear!
- zeazzz, on 06/19/2008, -0/+10That's what she said.
- Haz3rd, on 06/19/2008, -0/+10Link?
- Xizer, on 06/19/2008, -0/+9What dumbass uses YouTube to watch TV shows anyway?
- inactive, on 06/19/2008, -2/+10It's already there for some vids
- glake, on 06/18/2008, -1/+8Homer, where's that video? Sounds awesome.
- tidu, on 06/19/2008, -2/+9great, now YouTube will be overflowing with 2 hour 9/11 conspiracy documentaries
- Whaines, on 06/19/2008, -0/+7Which owns and includes links to youtube videos....
- jus1haz2, on 06/19/2008, -0/+7There is an HD site at http://setvid.com
- BugMeNot2, on 06/19/2008, -0/+7That's higher resolution than most of YouTube's videos, but it is not "hi-def".
- DlGG, on 06/19/2008, -1/+7***** Xbox? ***** Youtube?
Not easily impressed?
Anyway, not nearly as many people use Google Video as Youtube. - kitsua, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6Hell yes. I love YouTube but the quality sickens me. Particularly the audio.
Hulu is not an option outside the US. - captainkeene, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6I have a 12mbps connection and comcast throttles youtube. FU comcast.
- inactive, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6I've been uploading video longer than 10 minutes on YT for years. You don't need to be a partner to do that. Nothing new here.
- birch97, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6Not even close to HD.
- sarixe, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5well, high res, yes. not necessarily hd though.
- sfacets, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5Youtube wouldn't be such a problem for uploaders if they just allowed users to upload flash FLV files directly without putting them through unnecessary re-encodings which leaves the video looking like pixel soup. Better still - allow the end user to directly view mp4 files.
- nksoccer13, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5I have to agree. Youtube needs to evolve. They need to get higher definition and better content. Right now I'm watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on Hulu. What does Youtube offer that comes close to this level of content? Youtube is great for viral video and for the odd web gem but other than that it has nothing.. Youtube really needs to get independent filmmakers (as mentioned in the article), tv shows, or movies to remain relevant.
- wesleyzero, on 06/19/2008, -2/+7"Here It Goes Again": The Director's Cut
- tm1hafer, on 06/18/2008, -7/+11I am very
- cowsgonemadd3, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4Yeah has anyone tried to play a high def video? You would need a 6mbps or faster connection to load one.
- inactive, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4AND, the excuse used to be "oh, HD and SD video needs moar plugins, blah blah blah...." and thats NOT TRUE- take a look at ANY of the major networks' streaming episodes, or say HULU - they have much better bitrate-quality ratio, and the quality is fantastic - Youtube unfortunately is still stuck in 2005
- Jimbo51, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3It already costs $1m a day to pay the bandwidth bills. Even a slight increase in quality has to be funded.
- KiwiMark, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3When will they make them a better resolution? I don't care if it's not hi-def, Just not extremely lo-def.
- rkuchiki, on 06/19/2008, -1/+4Um, I upload 1h+ videos on a regular basis for RantRadio. All it requires is an account from the old-school days when the "Director" status was more than just a title. "Director" status back then was by application and required YT's approval. Upon approval you got unlimited video length. (but still 100mb). Now we have 1gb size limit, but old accounts that don't change their title from "Director" to all the new titles they have now can still upload unlimited length videos.
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=4A5CCD6FF7 ... (not meant to be spam, but proof) - benologist, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3I don't think it did... I haven't seen or been sent a flickr video link to look at since the first one demonstrating the new capabilities. I get or see plenty of photo links but everything video is at youtube.
- WalrusKaput, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3We all do, my friend.
- str1fe, on 06/19/2008, -1/+4Why is the stock symbol in the digg description? Seems pretty irrelevant to me, and uses copypasta as an excuse to not come up with a decent description.
- inactive, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3Yeah, because we should be wasting precious over-the-air bandwidth on ***** like this.
