YouTube Serves Up 100 Million Videos Per Day
go.reuters.com — YouTube, the leader in Internet video search, said on Sunday viewers have are now watching more than 100 million videos per day on its site, marking the surge in demand for its "snack-sized" video fare. YouTube videos account for 60 percent of all videos watched online, the company said.
- 1028 diggs
- digg it
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Probobly because it's so easy to submit and to put it on a website. I like YouTube
- britkev1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I completly agree! Its so populasr because its easy. If your mom can do it, anyone can.
- Jangles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I want to know how they pay for bandwidth? I hear it was 1 million a month in costs. Holy smokes.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16that was a while ago, when they weren't as popular. I can't imagine what it is not. And they still have no reliable revenue streams
- TheWalkingDude, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I wonder how they are going to keep up with copyright violations, that's my favorite part of YouTube:
http://www.digg.com/movies/Kevin_Smith_s_Clerks_On_YouTube_(Full_Length_Movie) - beanwaur, on 10/12/2007, -12/+10the simplicity is what make it so popular, and the flash media player, no more buggering arround with browser plugins.
- goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23flash is a browser plugin.
- cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3"I wonder how they are going to keep up with copyright violations, that's my favorite part of YouTube:

unfortunately part 1 of 10 is already taken down.. i dont want to start watchin at part 2 - TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5why would you even want to watch a video on youtube?
- arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23 I don't find that hard to believe, because every other website I come across has YouTube videos embedded into their site.
- Seumas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25No kidding. What about all the MySpace idiot pages with embedded youtube videos on them? That's probably 90 million services right there.
- willynilly, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0WTF is the point of posting a goddamned press release stating what we already know? And then digging it?
Morons. - xtina42c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like it because you can embed them into sites without a whole lot of hassle.
- roastedbagel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45As long as the masses are going to YouTube rather than ***** I'm happy.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13im not an ebaums world fan but i really want to no why everyone on digg hates it so much. Can someone tell me? i want to hate it too.
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2099% of the content on his site is stolen: http://ebaumsworldsucks.com/articles/flash.html
- TheContinental0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@borninda818
Ebaum's World likes to think that they invented anything remotely entertaining that appeared on the internet, despite the fact that they steal content from sites like Something Awful and You're The Man Now Dog without giving credit to the creators of said content. YTMND has had an ongoing feud with Ebaum for a while now, a search for "ebaum" on the site will turn up some pretty amusing stuff. - wishingwell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The biggest beef with them that I see is that they steal others sites user generated content and brand it as there own. The most vocal sites I've seen protest against this are fark, somethingawful and ytmnd. According to ebaumsworld though, their disclaimer says it can't be held legally responsible for what their users submit.
All in all it makes for some funny *****. - borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16thank you, I hate ebaum now.
Long live DIGG and YOUTUBE
- axentrix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I wonder which server hardware, and software, they use..
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'm fairly sure their backend is Python as they were hiring Python devs a while back.
This is cool. I enjoy YouTube and their upload progress meter keeps me occupied when I'm uploading. :P - Corvillus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Add .php to any of their URLs...it works, so that's probably what they are, or at least were, using to generate pages. I'm sure they're probably using something else (probably C ) underneath that though, since they do video encodes server side.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'm fairly sure their backend is Python as they were hiring Python devs a while back.
- Hexxagonal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11100 million videos = lots of bandwidth costs a day... i wonder how long until they go belly up
- kubudubudubuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12the more people that uses youtube, , the more bandwidth that they can afford =)
- pjack91, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Yeah it's called ad revenue.
- grammarpolice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15If they make you pay $1.99 for a special account that gives you access to a section where people host their amateur porno videos, then they would be sleeping in money.
- subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Odd, I just watched a YouTube embedded video, and there are two more in other tabs I have open now. It's a very good service I must admit.
- KeyLimePie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4They should seriously consider opting in for embedded video ads to help with their bandwidth costs
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Meh...having a small text ad below the video I think would be better. Then maybe the submitter can pay a small fee to get rid of it if they want to.
- Seumas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Just think of all the wasted potential for advancement when you suck out hundreds of millions of man-hours per day like that.
- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah, but it's so worth it to see someone try to break a liqour bottle on their own head.
- davehendrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That site is so addictive....it is so easy to click from video to video....
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Notice how Google Video is becoming similar?
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5VideoSift.com and VideoBomb.com help to find the good ones. In fact, I am watching some right now!
- zorpscorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ahh, thanks, it's a bit hard to find something interesting among the massive amounts of garbage that 12-year-olds think is funny.
- Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"YouTube, the leader in Internet video search"
YouTube, the leader in genuinely awesome Internet sites that unfortunately lack a business model beyond "spend VC money" and that I hope figure one out before they go all Dotcombust on us. - palosheights, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0just about every tv station in the u.s. and the world too are playing youtube videos during their broadcasts which makes for expotention hits every day.
i play my videos back thru my rca output on my laptop so i can watch them on regular tv. - emagdnim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+360%? I find that hard to swallow.
- lozaning, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i dont, what else is there, google video, it took them 4 weeks to watch my video and have them okay ti for hsoting. then you have some other ***** sites that host videos, most fo which are just copied of youtube
- johnmalc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So do the porn starlets.
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Now they just have to figure out a way to make it profitable. . .
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Maybe that's why its so ***** slow
- paulwilde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You all say that YouTube makes profits from ad revenue, but I see no ads?
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Considering 99% of Digg users freeload, I'd say you use Adblock.
- JoeWall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2thats why youtube should move to video ads (like 5 ec video ads before the actual video)
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They could easily stick an N-second clip at the beginning or end of each clip
- ceoandpresident, on 10/12/2007, -0/+111) Get people to upload tons of videos
2) ???
3) Profit- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5More like...
1) get people to upload videos
2) place ads on website
3) Profit!!!!!!!! - WhyTwoKay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@chicken101
No, see, you must have ???? in the thing for it to work. - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are a few ads on YouTube, but I'm still kind of sketchy how they are going to make money. We can argue the exact figure but their bandwidth and server costs are big. Like, really big. I don't see how ad sales are going to be able to cover that bill.
- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My take:
1) get people to upload videos
2) place ads on website
3) Profit ????
I too am concerned about the money making aspect of this venture. Enjoy the free-for-all while it lasts fellas, it wont last forever. (btw, I love youtube) - Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The fact is they are not making money. Let's hope they are turning heads at ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX!
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5More like...
- larfus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have been with Youtube.com for a little over a year now and have never grown tired of the videos. I won a 4 GB Nano from them and that was cool as well. I just hope they can find a business structure that can make a profit to support youtube, but not be so annoying to the end user.
- artitumis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I find it very hard to believe that YouTube is beating out the porn industry for percentage of videos watched per day.
- mikeabundo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Worksafe softcore is okay on YouTube.
- striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7God damn it people, quit filling up the Tubes! Ted Stevens is going to have a heart attack, it's everyone's tubes, not just YOUtubes. Thanks to these damn videos and all these ebooks it took me 20 minutes to receive the internet today, you... you... you see? You see?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6We need to use gambling chips to unclog the tubes,
- junkfood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I love YouTube, but they have already removed videos I uploaded twice. Once for Family Guy clips and once for Robot Chicken clips. Yet I see clips of both all over YouTube?
- modeless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They remove those videos as they are reported. Which ones get deleted seems pretty random. You are unlucky. But regardless, it is always illegal to upload TV shows to YouTube, unless you own the copyright.
- bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4YouTube has an amazing video search and tagging system. So fun hopping from one video to another and waste free time doing it.
Kinda ironic that Google is the leader in search and yet their video searching is kinda off-track. - mixx941, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I like the concept of YouTube and having a free place for people to submit videos, but I wish they would provide the files in a real format for people to download (for people who would allow their videos to be downloaded of course). That's not because I'm a "freeloader" and trying to avoid seeing ads or supporting them, but because Adobe/Macromedia will not make Flash binaries for all common operating systems/architectures, and therefore not everyone can view the videos.
-Mark - pauljaroszewski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4hopefully this will make ebaumsworld extinct...that guy is an *****.
- HelloimRayRay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Youtube is absolutely so easy to use interface to upload and view videos.
Google Video has some catching up to do... - aadsfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0A million videos per day and still they can't get basic social networking figured out.
TERASURE TROOPERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR TRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSUUUURRREEEEEEEE TRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR - Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll be impressed if they are here next year.
- mikeabundo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And they're huge in the Philippines, too: http://www.micropersuasion.com/2006/05/25_things_i_lea.html
- yaosio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Snack-sized? I hope that was not in the press release because the only time a press release says that is when the company is going under. WE NEED MORE BUZZ WORDS!
- FreakingHound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dang, check out one of the founders: http://jawed.com/resume/
