- juneof44, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54I wish they'd spend their time increasing bandwidth and not taking away my Golden Girls.
- Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Copyrighted shows longer than 10 minutes will just be broken up into multi-part segments, and labeled as such. Always a way to circumvent the restrictions.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Golden girls is great. Kudos for the man secure in his sexuality.
- whizzbang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think this is reasonable, this will still allow them to serve video clips without TV networks getting on their ass about DMCA violations.
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7TV networks will still get on their asses... It's in their nature... :-/
- trogdor282, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7tvtorrent.info
- dggeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If you look at any of sidewalkpilot's other comments, you can see he's a comment spammer troll. Best just to block him.
- TheSevenDuffs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6you dont need to pay for it, it just makes you fill out a separate form
- mtvkilledusall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I have videos on there that I have shot and edited myself that are over 10 minutes in length. That is so lame.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Whatever Youtube. Like we are there to watch clips of dumbass teens acting like jackasses on a webcam.
Other sites will rise to take your place. - rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Youtube blows. Beware if you upload your original video work to them they claim to have the rights to use it and resell it without ever having to pay or even ask if it's okay. They have one of the worst user agreements ever. There are a ton of other services that do the same thing Youtube does and don't make any claims on your work.
- deepdigging, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7And outraged you should be. I mean they have you paying through the nose for hosting your videos, and then they pull stuff like this. Oh wait ...
Seriously though, from what they write it very much sounds like they are looking for a manageable way to allow people like yourself to be exempt from this restriction. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5me prefers the Gilmore Girls
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hehe. My first thought "Why doesn't Google limit the time? Because then they couldn't have their 5 hour factory tour on there!"
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Use archive.org if you want to distribute your self-made videos.
- formica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So tell them, instead of bitching about it. They said flat out that they want to hear from people like you; put your video where your mouth is, so to speak. It seems as though they're ready to accomodate you, if you're willing to put a little more work into it.
- yoshihama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Plus the NBC version doesn't to play in Firefox (just hangs at the loading screen), whereas the YT version worked well cross browser and cross platform. NBC has yet to figure out that not everyone runs IE on Windows as their browser.
- fafpak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Google has no time limits as of yet, true. However, they are protecting rights of copyright owners just like YouTube. Proof is the recent "deletion" of all Top Gear full length episodes and clips from video.google.com.
- skeeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I first saw that Lazy Sunday video on YouTube. I don't think it was available on the NBC site right away. Seemed like after they heard it was getting lots of talk and plays online they stuck it up there and also put it on iTunes. Then went after YouTube.
- Progranism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When they removed the full length copy of The Untold Story of Stewie Griffin, that was the last straw.
- jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sniper,
3 old ladies? What blasphemy, did you forget about Sophia? That makes four. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yeah. Kinda blows their "protecting copyright holders" cover story. YouTube doesn't give a ***** about copyright holders.
- reaver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No reason for me to go to that site anymore.
Google Video here I come. - JohnA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The service is free... and even if they are using "discount" bandwidth from Cogent or something, it still must be costing them a fortune in bandwidth.
Seems like they saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, so I can't really blame them for this decision. - studiorats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well that sucks! I suppose nuthin's free, right? How am I gonna get my fix of I.T. Crowd?
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thanks, thesevenduffs.
That's what I saw when I clicked the "Premium Content" link. - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7NOOOOOOO where will I watch streaming south park:(
- fa_pa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The risk is still pretty high because of all the music videos that are on YouTube.
- ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7this is infuriating. as an indie filmmaker who had most of his fims on here i was outraged when they put in the 10 minute rule. most of mine are just over 10 minutes and now i can no longer use this service!
not cool. - bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Darn. The only good content on YouTube is the copyrighted stuff + rare 80s music videos. It was fun to watch full episoes of The State, Aeon Flux, and other shows. Many shows put on there haven't been released on DVD, so that's my only place to watch them.
Okay, about 99% of the user content are teenagers lip syncing to their favorite rap song, or other complete wastes of bandwidth(and there is a lot). I vote them 1 star all the time.
Now only if I knew how to circumvent the mystery pause every couple of seconds, even if there's plenty of video downloaded ahead of it. BTW if no more content loads at all, just restart Firefox completely. - klept, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What is the bfd? If these tv programs, etc that are more than 15 min or 10 min still have all the commercials, I dont think the advertisers would be unhappy. Jesus why would these programs, the networks, or anybody connected with the content complain about more coverage?
It's a whole new paradigm out there in the media world because of the internet. Suppression and censureship wont change that. The established should either adapt or they will die. Sort of reminds me of the American Automobile business. Look where it was, now look where it is.
Youtube just killed themselves. Stay tuned, as they say, for a Youtube in China, Bulgaria, or Upper Volta. - tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5the new iTunes South park season pass :P
- Amigaice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where am I going to upload all my TSS shows now?? Watch them will you can:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u7CSDND4CE
I have 24 shows up there. - BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, they have. Hence why there is an MSNBC. Take a guess at what the MS stands for.
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good things don't last forever. Perhapps now one of the youtube clones will take their place at the top?
- hordak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good to know that Robot Chicken will probably not be affected by this. :)
- pr0x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can see why YouTube is doing this since their bandwith use must be huge, however I like to watch the long videos. Too bad this will not get rid of the stupid videos on there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So much for good ideas.
Why are the links on my site still working, BTW? Shouldn't half the YouTube videos I cataloged over the past six months now be GONE?
PS
The headline is *****. It should read "after half-assed cost-benefit analysis" instead of "to prevent copyright violations." YouTube is a corporation. They are not in the business of public service--whether for us or the "copyright holders" (read: people just like us only with better lawyers). - Salisme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Blame myself for what? This whole scenario of the MPAA getting bent out of shape over TV.torrents and distribution is getting out of hand. WTF is the difference if I press record of my TV/DVR or I rightclick "Save as...". Not a god damn thing. Or more to the point, whats the difference if I Watch it on a video site or if I Watch it on tv. Its already paid for, every month by everyone paying a cable bill. If anything, its the MPAA being pirates by making us pay additional costs to see something already provided to the public.
I pay $150 a month for my cable. I already paid for the shows weither I watch them when they are broadcast or not. Why they are claiming I need to pay twice is beyond me. I hope to god torrentspy win and their case gets dropped. The greedy bastards known as the MPAA need to be put in their place. - deadlierchair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think this is a fair move by YouTube. They would have gotten sued by someone really quickly if they let things go like they have. While it was 'cool' to have some TV shows up there, I knew it wouldn't last. An official site like that just can't host illegal content that easily. I still see YouTube as a hugely exciting site. The other videos are not just "teenagers posting stupid videos of themselves," there are a large amount of news reports, video blogs, instructional things, speed runs of games (heh), and other stuff. The site is awesome because it allows you to upload your own videos and share them, not because it allowed some copyright infringement.
Download limewire or something and realize that each web site/program has a use! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3just get it from http://awesomo.net you whiner
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Golden Girls?
...anyhow,
"What about the little guys you ask? We hear ya. We know that although most users are uploading short form clips, there are those of you out there that are video bloggers or amateur film makers that have legitimate, user generated content over 10 mins, and obviously, this is not an ideal situation for you. We recognize that, and we're actively working on a solution that will allow for those of you with longer form user generated content, while still preventing copyrighted full length episodes from entering the system. In fact, if you are a user with videos over 10 mins, please contact us. We want to hear from you. We want to know how you've been impacted by this change and any thoughts or ideas you may have. "
They should at least allow manually-reviewed submissions, or something like that. Any mention of the words "premium content" sounds like a money grab; I'm no YT user but I hope it isn't one. - fifrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's called BitTorrent my friend. Youtube's quality sucked on IT Crowd episodes anyway. Get divx copies from mininova.org
- BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2(Not defending this practice, read: doesn't like it)
Read the Fark.com fine print at the bottom of the main page. Supposedly they own all of your photoshops, posts, ect. They claim to have no plans to ever use anyone's stuff for profit but for whatever reason they also have a similar agreement. Ebalmsworld does the same I think.
Maybe one of Digg's legal beagles can let us know what's up with that? - Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let me sum up the announcement:
We can't afford all that bandwidth, so we're laming things up a bit. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All I know, is that if they take off "Heatvision & Jack", I'll be bummed. I'm still trying to find a decent place to download it from and stick it on my iPod. :o)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's because they're shown enlarged by default. On the bottom right, click the icon to set video to "original size". No more pixelation.
- wpgbrownie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it just me, or does any one else find google video to be really pixalted looking?
- Mantice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2O M G
Who cares if they are copyright
They are low quality on you tube, hardly stuff worth paying for and most of us if we really want it we will just dload it .
Stupid ass's, you tube is dead now. - kitykity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here here. Also, in all of this thread, I can't believe that no one has mentioned blip.tv . They are a vlogger's best friend.
