- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+71Not even cool thinking...Google Suggest has been out for what, two years now?
(http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en if you haven't tried it.) - gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -5/+68God knows i can't wait 0.00213 seconds.
- nene7070, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51its called a period. please use it... that made no sense....
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -7/+53Seriously. It as much time loading as it did me pressing enter and getting 9 more results.
Cool thinking, but not convenient. No digg. - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I second that.
While google suggest won't give you the description info, it's WAY faster and will gives more results to choose from.
Not bad though, I just like Google's implementation better. - norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9This is old and anyway we all hate EVERYTHING Yahoo does, right? we're all google and apple fans up in here!
- Sirfrummel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah :-D, that cracked me up.
At least it's good to see competition among search engines... This Yahoo! Instant Search is just one example of companies trying to innovate and come up with something new for searching. I like it. - enzyte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8At least Yahoo tools are available without invitations...
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Dupe, over 200 days old at that.
http://digg.com/software/Yahoo_debuts_beta_of_Instant_Search_-_results_before_finished_typing,_WOW
Not so much shame on Digg as a shame on Ajaxian for reporting as new news here:
http://ajaxian.com/archives/yahoo-releases-instant-search
I guess it doesn't matter, but I still reported it as a dupe. - tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Also like the slam to google, "Why feel lucky when you can be right?" in regards to googles, feeling lucky button..... good one guys!
- mrdhammer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Despite not being such a fan of Yahoo right now, I actually think this could affect how people approach search. For people who don't have a lot of experience formulating strong search queries, this could allow a new way to refine a complicated search query.
- 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It helps to use more that one search engine sometimes. I often use different seaches to make sure that I'm not missing anything.
- kevinski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ugh…that's terrible. I was expecting something more along the lines of Google Suggest (which, in my opinion, is far more useful), and I got this? It's things like this that keep me away from Yahoo!
- Crazen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Couple of comments:
1) competition is good
2) Yahoo has had this for a while
3) fanboys suck, and this thread is pretty disgusting - kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'd rather have a digg spy type while typing for most relevant...
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I enjoy the little Google jab in the description.
- 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6If Yahoo blows, why does it get dug so much? I bet Excite and Lycos wish that they could get this much attention.
- Eddible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Haha this is so crap it's untrue. It is actually quicker to just click search then wait for some little bubble. Trust Yahoo! to ***** up a perfectly good idea.
- thecoolestcow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I kinda like how if you put "weather boston" or "22 5th ave new york ny" it shows the weather/map, respectively. That's the only cool thing about it.
- ai42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's a nice AJAX implmentation.
Funny how when you type in "How many feet in a mile" it gives you a result to wronganswers.com and it does not properly link it. - xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3*sigh* Not only has this service been out since last year (I hate it when old things get dugg as new, and no one realizes it), but no one seems to know how to work it either.
No multiple word searches? Yes it does. It just only shows results if it finds something relevant. Type in "Boston weather". Thats a multiple word search, and theres your answer.
*shrug* I just told Yahoo to implement it into their standard search page so it does it for me without having to go to the instant website and it works fine. - bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"miserable failure" still works except now it seems more obvious
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ouch, not only is it much later than Google suggest, its slow as *****.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Try reading with a male monotone robot voice and it makes much more sense.
- daProject, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think its poorly implemented at the moment, but it does have some cool little functions. Type AAPL for instance and get a pretty detailed analysis of the latest trading in Apple shares.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Wow! It saved me 1 billionth of a second and it works like crap! It took forever to load the results and it had a bunch of site errors in Internet Exploder 6!
- AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I typed in "give me something" without quotes, and it didn't give me anything.....lol. I find this search feature to be quite distracting even when it does work.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
No Digg. Google is king. - KenLin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3**********************Not Google Not Google Not Google**********************************
I cannot believe how many people out there are saying that Google Suggest came first etc.
Yahoo! Instant Search (YIS) is neither Google Suggest (GS) nor Google's I Feel Lucky (GIFL)!
Google Suggests tells you the common queries but do not return any results. YIS returns results from its own properties (Y finance is considered the gold standard, for example).
Click on GIFL after a search term Google will direct you to one site *it* thinks is what you want. YIS gives you an instant result, if available, AND the full list of results if you wish by pressing enter. Basically, it is souped up search. Be a Google fanboy if you want but most studies show that G and Y search relevancy are pretty comparable.
Lastly, YIS also allows to enable this option on search.yahoo.com. For example, if you do not like the Yahoo.com portal (yah yah, it sucks so you say, I say it is the best out there (see MSN, Google's portal sucks too)) and like Google's clean interface, then search.yahoo.com is for you.
Anyway if you like YIS, great. Don't like YIS, fine, that's your opinion. But to say this is a copy of Google Suggest is just uninformed. - cfly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I prefer yahoo to google, i find i get better search results
- l3e3e7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It just seems spastic. That bubble flashes in and then disappears when I type the next letter. The lag also seems to make me type a letter and then wait for the bubble. I think the auto suggest feature that google rolled out is much more convenient because I can look to see if what I am typing is in the list as I am typing. It doesn't save me anytime if I have to wait just to see what it suggests.
- GaleForce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Retarded.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As I typed I received no 'instant answers' I had to press enter and wait as the site came back for results for 'Yahoo Search Engine' and 'Unix' and 'AIX'.
Someone can't wait a few seconds for a search, even dail-up users would have to wait for this...
no digg - JW00000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, Google just happens to have a link with the text "Tamil" to the Tamil version of Google. What's wrong with that? Yahoo! is just honest, and they don't show another result because it's Google. If it returns Google, that means Yahoo! doesn't have a blacklist with Google on it.
- matthewvelie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if you search for something that hasn't been searched for recently it takes forever, try searching for something besides their suggestions or something not common; its slower than a normal result.
- tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Those who use Safari and like the idea of incremental search:
Inquisitor. Makes typing in queries in the Google search field look like you're using Spotlight
http://www.inquisitorx.com/safari/ - lb3ll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ugh this is terrible it gave me like two results. google does a much better job. no digg
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2try typing then NOT hitting enter
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Reported as lame. It seems they have a predefined group of common searches and results cached... if you search for anything else you get no instant results.
- mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3no digg b/c who really needs this?
Secondly, do a search for "tamil" and your result is Google. Fantastic. Here's a screenshot I took of it in action: http://tinyurl.com/j9rra - soulrubble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ugh. This reminds me of why I never use "I'm Feeling Lucky".
Don't pretend to know exactly what I want, please. You're almost always wrong.
Oh, and how in $deity's name did they manage to have this thing give no results at all for half the queries I put in? - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It seems pretty useless to me, but it is a neat concept. I usually like to see many results from my queries so I can choose which one I think is the best.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If they can get this to work like yahoo desktop search that would be killer. If you don't use YDS what it does is refine the list in your search window on the fly as you type. I don't know if there is enough computing power on earth to do that with the WWW. YDS does pretty well with the few 100K files on my PC (I have it index EVERYthing) but I guess it does not scale well when it is billions of file being hit by millions of people.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Oh come on. Are we really whining about something being faster and more convenient? Even if you can't find saving a few seconds in search results, surely you can find convenience in being able to narrow your search results as you type.
But that was pretty funny ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it's more like an ALPHA if you are getting script errors from "professional web designers" in the most widley used internet browser
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who dugg this?
- JW00000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ddfall: ...but am the only one who just uses google in my browser (By in my browser I mean, not going to google.com but using a browser like firefox (camino, safari, etc.) with the search box in the upper right hand corner (Which Microsoft copied in I.E. 7)? Ya, I didn't think so...
Konqueror suggests searches with their amount of results in the upper right corner, just like Google Suggest. Try it!
Anyway, I thought Yahoo Instant Search had been out for some time now...
And yes: their forum's first message is of September 1st, 2005. - PJPoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It doesn't work if you try searching for Pokémon.
- cmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hrm... looks like ajaxwhois.com to me!
