- misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yahoo buying AOL? AOL has a history of corruption and anti-user philosophies. While Yahoo isn't geek respected like Google, at least they aren't AOL. In some ways, Yahoo succeeds because they are the anti-Google in style and structure, but they still have a decent reputation. But if Yahoo merges with AOL, Yahoo's entire corporate philosophy and reputation might entirely change...and not for the better.

- mcottier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's funny, the guys who invented Google went to Yahoo first with their search technology, only wanting a measly 1.8 million for it! To think, Yahoo could have had the best search results, plus they would not have Google to deal with, for just a little more then a million dollars. Probably one of the worst business moves ever made.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Doing anything of the sort will not save Yahoo. Coming out of the last tech recession, Yahoo had built itself into one of the few large technology companies that could really execute. Their problem is that flush with his success, Terry Semel decided to hire a bunch of clueless Hollywood execs who knew nothing about technology, the product, or the industry, who proceeded to corrupt the Silicon Valley egalitarian culture of Yahoo and drive out their best talent. The only thing Yahoo can do at this point to save themselves is to flush out all the idiots they've hired and learn to execute again. Engaging in mergers or acquisitions will just distract them and give the rot further time to spread while Google finishes eating their lunch.
- mrmatchgame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NO WHAMMIES!!!!
- mcottier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am talking about before Google even existed.
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google should just buy Yahoo and Microsoft and be done with it. Come on Googlezon!
- lubos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Google owns 5% in AOL and their reputation hasn't changed due to this fact.
I see what Yahoo is trying to achieve and obviously Google is aware of it too. They will do everything possible to keep AOL far enough from Yahoo and Microsoft. AOL has still huge user base (more than 100 million visitors a month) of non-geeks and if Google wants to maintain its number 1 status (and therefore get the most revenue from ads), they have no choice but make sure that AOL, Yahoo (and possibly MSN) won't merge. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2There can be only one. Stupid economy.

- kynky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think AOL represents a huge userbase, that can be easily targeted with a strong advertising vantage. Basically I dont think that any other samesize userbase enlisting with another providers service, would be more financialy benfecial for an advertiser to market too with such a strongly defined character of the users. Rebranding could happen. At the end of the day money is money.
- Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Take the deal!
- etnu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Where on earth did you get that figure from? The only interviews I've ever seen indicate that Terry offered them ~$2bn for GOOG back in 2002, but they wanted $3 and he felt that price too high. The story there is virtually identical to what happened with eBay.
Interestingly, Yahoo! did pay x billion for two companies: Geocities and Broadcast.com
Hey, hindsight is 20/20, right? =)
