- APErebus, on 11/19/2008, -1/+21Yahoo's biggest mistake was not reacting to Google fast enough...
And they got run over and left grasping at the air vacuum that Google left behind it - RamezaniK, on 11/19/2008, -4/+186) Not being Google.
- theadvinci, on 11/20/2008, -0/+11Trying to be everything at once. News portal, e-mail service, search engine.
Google started as a search engine and only a search engine. When it was perfect and had enough users it made new things. - frogman54, on 11/20/2008, -0/+11I don't know. That yodeling jingle they had never seemed right to me. I blame the yodeling.
- hilanderiam, on 11/20/2008, -1/+127) Slow to load (see below)
8) Spamming their search page with ad*i*s and every possible unwanted service they offer. (If I need services I'll make a search) - AndrewDB, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Changing their start page from something that's so simple anyone can navigate it to something that's extraordinarily complex.

That's why. - angrykeyboarder, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7I've got both Yahoo! and Gmail accounts and Gmail is vastly superior. On the other hand Yahoo! Mail is superior to Hotmail (but then, what isn't).
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6Yahoo is a junky looking site. Its nothing but a page full of links to half useful stuff. Yahoo staffers have some talent, unfortunately management was too unfocused.
- angrykeyboarder, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Yahoo! was an internet pioneer. They were around for several years before anyone ever heard of Google. I'm really saddened by their problems (but not enough to substitute the Google services I use for those at Yahoo).
- BelatedHero, on 11/20/2008, -2/+6What is this "Yahoo"?
- wantguru, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Google do so many things, truly.
But their keys are just two... 'Search engine and online advertisement system'.
It's very clear. - bacon_skoda, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Yahoo is #1 in News Portal and Email and Fantasy Sports and of course Flickr.
They are good in many things also. Just not search.
Google has it's #1s and MSN has it's #1s.
plus, digg is basically what yahoo had when they let people comment on their news articles. - iMacFiend, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Yahoo is safe internet for those who are too scared to look on google. It's middle of the road and always has been. Before google was a major player I used alta vista, and always hated that Yahoo made searching decisions for me.
- ly4u, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Yahoo!'s mistake is lying left right and to self. Yahoo should decide who they are. I continue to hear in the msm: "search engine company yahoo". wtf? their search engine is a joke. I may be wrong, but my guess is 99% of people go there for other things?
- nikki2300dk, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3They just never came back after the crash.
- AaronCo, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3The biggest mistake? Treating their customers like sh*t. Even as a paying customer... ever had to deal w/ their customer support ppl? I'd rather have a root canal than have to go thru that again. I switched providers because of that nonsense.
Sadly most of their revenue now isn't based on providing good quality service, but rather spamming the crap out of ppl w/ ads. Ads are now treated as a commodity. It's how many targeted hits you can deliver for the dollar... and Yahoo just can't deliver like Google does. Lower quality hits, fewer of them, higher CPC, just a waste of time.
Goodbye Yahoo. I for one will not mourn your passing. - mattearle, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2For me it was clear they were going to fail when I first used Yahoo Search Marketing after already having the joyful experience of using Google AdWords to compare it to.
They needed to get their PPC and content advertising interface right and they failed terribly. Overture sucked and the product that they replaced it with was just as bad.
It's hard to give Yahoo your money and that's a very bad thing - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Yahoo is the modern day equal of aol with all the spam and ads/garbage. The start page is far to busy. Plus, i see no real reason someone would search with yahoo, it never returned decent results.
- krc1, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2July 2006. The day they changed the software on the message boards. Yahoo Finance was the place to go for advice on stocks. Now, it's just a sad joke.
- bacon_skoda, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Do you mean Yahoo or the new iGoogle?
(greasmonkey script can fix the new iGoogle) - BrokenVisage, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3Explain 'vastly superior'. I get less spam with Yahoo, the interface seems much more user friendly and intuitive for me, and believe it or not Yahoo is more responsive then Gmail while navigating. So, I don't know, I'm in the minority here but lots of you guys seem to be embellishing how "bad" Yahoo is.

"Yahoo! is firing a bunch of people to cut $400 million from its budget. That sucks for the people who work there, but the entrepreneurs and venture capitalists who hustled Yahoo! out of more than $2.5 billion in the last 4 years probably aren't terribly concerned.
In the typical American fashion, Yahoo! bought a bunch of ***** it didn't need with money it didn't have. That, of course, was no problem at the time because the stock market always goes up, and they get a *****-ton of airline miles every time they buy a Web 2.0 startup. In the other typical American fashion, the sharks took advantage of Yahoo!'s poor financial sense and engineered a little bit of the old redistribution of wealth - namely distributing Yahoo's wealth across their pockets." - pcpimpster, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Yahoo employees giving their vast incite.
"I'm sorry, I can't say anything,"
"I need to go off to a meeting now,"
"I have no idea,"
"You should really talk to a press spokesperson about that,"
"I don't know, I'm not in a position to really speculate,"
"It's difficult to know, difficult to know,"
Yeah, i see this going somewhere... - mojonyc212, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Yahoo board is sleeping, they missed Google deal few years ago. Board should resign massively!
- XtheXlanternX, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2dupe
- AndrewDB, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Yahoo, I love Google and iGoogle.
Also, you don't have to use iGoogle..
iGoogle's not that bad if you can learn how to configure it. - endustry, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1They also had an opportunity to acquire eBay back in the 90s but rumor is the deal foundered mostly due to ego problems. Apparently some of Yahoo!'s middle execs balked at the idea of reporting to incoming eBay execs. Buying GeoCities for over a billion dollars (albeit with bloated stock proceeds) was also a numbskull move.
Mainly I think Yahoo! just failed to escape the trappings of typical corporate culture. Out-of-touch, milquetoast managers took over with their spreadsheets and schmoozing, people in the trenches close to the product were ignored, etc. The culture at Google seems to encourage more inclusiveness. Employees who feel important generally work harder, are happier, etc. This should be the new paradigm going forward anyway. - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+1Zing.
- BrokenVisage, on 11/20/2008, -4/+3Whatever. Yahoo mail is better then Gmail, and their fantasy sports are great especially with multiple leagues and stat tracker.
- wantguru, on 11/20/2008, -3/+2Yaho don't know 'timing'
- tawnos, on 11/20/2008, -3/+2#9 - Failing.
- doiveo, on 11/19/2008, -3/+1covered in #2... not buying Google.
