- Trention, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Am I the only one that finds these categories useful?
- neuroticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There's always http://dmoz.org/
- bcasper1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What does it all mean!!!!!!!ahhhhhhhhhhh
- etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Probably. I've never used them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I did.. in about 1998.
- MrScience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've always loved the directory concept. It's too bad they're doing away with it. But there is a little known feature of Google that will soften the blow (though it isn't very discoverable): http://directory.google.com/
And, for the readership here, the very hidden http://directory.google.com/Top/Adult/ - sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I used Yahoo's categories extensively. In fact, they were one of the main reasons I'd occasionally still use Yahoo. I'd search for a known site, locate its Yahoo category, then use the category listing to find a concise list of similar sites. In the marketplace, if you want to stand out you need to distinguish yourself from the competition, and categories were something Yahoo had that Google doesn't. If they are abandoning categories, I will be abandoning them for my searches.
- DigitalBath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I use Yahoo as much as Google and the directory listing was one reason why. But now....
- spling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Why does a search for Google bring up vintage jewelry? No wonder Google is used more. :p
- NeoCortex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I used to use categories when I wanted to browse a topic, but had no idea what in particular I was looking for. Now I have Digg to just find the good sites that I don't know about.
The times, they are a-changing. - chaosium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But portals, maaaaan!
- MrScience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I used categories extensively too. You might be surprised to find that Google has a similar service: http://directory.google.com/
- bhirsch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To each his own. I did find them useful, and sometimes I used the directory to browse around when I wasn't precisely sure what I was looking for... a good time waster. Too bad they're abandoning it.
- rustybrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, depends. If I have a top search listing with a directory link then I don't want one click access to my competitors page. But if my competitor is listed then I want him to give me that one click access via the directory page.
- raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Directories were for back in the day when the sites were few and easy to index by topic. Today, the majority of those sites have probably been offline for years, and are only visible through the Internet Archive.
They've had their time, so let them go. The sites themselves (Digg, YouTube, Wikipedia, Slashdot) have become their own directory indexes for endless types of information, so there's no further need for search engine directories. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dmoz and google directory are there as good (better?) alternatives.
- r2pro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@MrScience directory.google.com is a clone of dmoz.org
- michaeldillon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They made a HUGE mistake when they began charging for directory listings.
- r2pro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Human edited directories, both paid for inclusion and user submitted, are a thing of the past. They were great in the days of Alta Vista and Excite but Google's algorithms have long made them irrelevant.
- tsbardella, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I remember using a Linux computer to access yahoo when it was not even on yahoo.com but on some at buffalo university or anyway some kind of buffalo and it was a directory of all not just some but all of the links in the web or the World Wide Web as we called it then, and you could add one if you wanted and categorize it as well. That was back when a picture of the space shuttle was about as cool a thing as you could ever imagine on a computer screen.
- deindexed, on 01/12/2009, -0/+0There are hundreds of other good directories that offer guarenteed placement of links, try http://www.tysyacha.com/ or http://www.niche-market.org, both very good small bid directories.
- sebastian0602, on 06/08/2009, -0/+0Here is another one:
http://linkeurope.net - mightybutton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know that this isn't quite the same as having it in the search, but you can go to dir.yahoo.com
- fun4stuff, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4people still use yahoo?
- mightybutton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Here's an article I just wrote on this digg:
www.TheLatest.At/Yahoo - DigitalBath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Um, I just typed in Google on Yahoo and it was the first result....
- DiamondMaven, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2great article
