"Well, Doens't matter to me because I never go to yahoo. Google has everything I need in a much better designed site which loads much faster. And without those crap ads."
----
have you seen http://search.yahoo.com (not http://www.yahoo.com) ? I used to use yahoo, switched to google for the same reasons as everybody else, and never knew about the 'new' yahoo until recently.
You should at least check it out if you haven't used yahoo to search in a while, especially with the recent news that google will bring image ads to it's web pages due to the AOL purchase. - ChrisGranger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How is this sneaky or poaching? They're informing people who already use Yahoo that there's a built-in Yahoo search option in Firefox. Seems helpful if you ask me. By the way, I use Google.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dont you think its a more unfair that Firefox decided that *everyone* should use Google?
- TheSiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nothing wrong with this, in my opinion.
- xjbri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, I noticed this today on Yahoo. Kinda funny!
- howie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Some Google developers have said that Yahoo's engine is better"
Oh yeah? When and where did that happen? - MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, Doens't matter to me because I never go to yahoo. Google has everything I need in a much better designed site which loads much faster. And without those crap ads.
- oldgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google always get better results. But that's my opinion.
- elmimmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use Google, and would not switch to Yahoo. It is a fact, however, that most plain users do not usually try widgets and menus, so most of FF users I am sure do not even know they can choose a different search engine. I think it is completely in their right to bring this to their users' attention, and is, in the end, informative.
- mburns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems like a good idea to me. Exposes a feature not everyone would know about, and if they don't want Yahoo! to be their search, then they will ignore it. Nothing wrong with that.
- 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google is becoming a cult. People don't even look at other search sites any more. http://search.yahoo.com is not cluttered. I check out other search engines all of the time just to see what's new.
- starf1re, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The fact that google is the default in any non-microsoft browser bothers me. Leaving things on the default is usually like not thinking for yourself. As much as I used to like google, these days the near monopoly it has combined with fact that page rank is more influenced by money than quality of results (?Preference to AOL content coming now, OMG!) has me turning away from google.
I think it would be funny if yahoo was teaching people how to completely remove google from that search bar (as I did) instead of just changing it to yahoo. (though I'm don't use yahoo either. lately it's vivisimo) - LAguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Answers.com first and if that doesn't find what I need, it automatically defaults to Google.
- Sippi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Got this the other day, wish I thought of posting it on here.
- jdtanner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I don't know about you guys but I've removed all of the search engines that I don't use from MyCroft using the SearchPluginHacks extension to Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1563)
John
http://physics.open.ac.uk/~jdtanner - jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it was AOL, they would have to make a popup script to do it for their audience. I mean, Yahoo! users may need to be shown how to change the default but at least they have them do it themselves. Although with the cheapness of SBC DSL here in CA I am seeing more AOL intellects on Yahoo! No offense to competent AOL users if there be any, I'm only referring to the majority.
(How to spot an AOL user on a non-AOL computer? they use the first field on your default homepage as a Address bar putting in the URL.. even if it isn't MSN, Yahoo or Google.) - 4815162342, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i saw this... i never once thought about submitting it to digg because who gives a *****?
- shawgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0shut up.
- thewayner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is so special about this? It is called marketing. It is actually a pretty cool idea.
- cyberworm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Try it on safari. no such luck. :D
- jdtanner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That should be https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1563 of course...
- SnowballDotBe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think they're allowed to do this, why not.
I use Google most of the time, but Yahoo is my start page, because of the nicer interface.
http://www.snowball.be - szelij, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would use yahoo if it loaded faster, i don't mind graphics but load times for yahoo is a killer and i'm on a good internet connection.
- pneve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The whole point of firefox is that you can add search engines. I have set mine up to search my company intranet, whats the big deal?
- TrippleZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most people who use FireFox to begin with are probably atleast coherent enough to know that there is a Yahoo search option, and that Google is easier and more expansive anyway.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"fair enough, why should google be the default with the firefox install anyway?"... agreed. Yahoo is just recommending its search engine, its not changing it...
- vaserv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They want to get traffic and showing how to do it. See nothing wrong with that
- JPhilipson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I give yahoo credit. That's pretty clever...
- evilunleashed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is nothing wrong, or even newsworthy about this. So a company is advertising and promoting itself over it's competition on it's own webspace. Big deal.
- spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont see how this is news at all, their pointing out that there are other choices than the default. no digg.
- jmholloway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i love yahoo
- halc5s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why was this even posted? Wow! A company wanting you to use THEIR product instead of a competitors. On top of that, making the transition EASIER for you. How dare they! I say boycott Yahoo!
- bobdole34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm.. I wouldn't call it poaching.. Perhaps "strategizing"?
- eyrieowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doing exactly as they should
- Serendipity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good for yahoo, in marketing terms it can be called as a 'tough offense' program and or generally classified as building customer traffic. A 'tough offense' program is designed to entice the loyal customers of the competition to switch.
- aliasunknown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great. It shows how yahoo is admitting that the marketshare of non-IE browsers is worth going after. A sign of IE's impending doom? Maybe...
- imjosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In other news Apple runs a campaign to get users to use their product.
Its freakin business, they are trying to get users to use their "product" but since its taking away from Google its o so horrible, get over it.
By the way I use google but would you want google without yahoo and other competitors, yahoo is changing which will force even more innovation at MS and Google, which should make the products better for the users - MikeWeller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is doing exactly the same with the IE7 beta:
http://www.digg.com/technology/*Google*_Poaching_*Yahoo_*_users_ - firebird2110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Digg. What's sneaky about this? Sneaky would be if they'd found a way to make the change automatically when you visited their site.
- elev8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is stupid. Even though I don't like Yahoo, they've done nothing wrong (hell, Google PAYS Mozilla to make sure Google is the default search engine).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would be nice if you could set a preference at yahoo that sets "search.yahoo.com" as you're default page at yahoo instead of the normal yahoo.com hompage.
so you enter yahoo.com -> yahoo checks your preferences on the server (if your logged in) and sends you to your preferred yahoo.com starting point.
This would work ok as the normal starting point at yahoo.com is actually rds.yahoo.com so it already has it's own subdomain setup (beyond just www). So www could act as a gatekeeper that directed traffic to the correct starting subdomian. - JamSki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually changed my default from Google to Yahoo after I heard that the default Google search box is a part of the Google Adsense program.
- moisie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you're using firefox you can just type dict and then the word you want to check and it will look it up for you, no need to use the search bar - leave it free for something else.
- znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fair enough, why should google be the default with the firefox install anyway?
- blafusel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0since when do i care about banners? seriously. no digg at all!
- snoudude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heck, I use dictionary.com for my search portion of the browser - I can't spell to save my life
- Tech_Junkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why not yahoo, now google is just another big company sell out! Jokes on all the google bots!
- mindlessxd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That smiley-face over on the left doesn't quite convay their deviousness.
- Jaxim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't until Google Personalized Page gets even half as good as Yahoo's My Yahoo.
- NoonienSoong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just bookmark search.yahoo.com why is that so hard?
