- mjlawless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hey guys,
I'm glad you like the imagery. I know it's not the best in all areas, but what we've put together is a platform with a baseline that was releasable in the beta. To me (and it was my responsibility to pull the trigger on letting people see it), that meant getting a full coverage USA map with as fresh a set of data as we can find, and support of Y! Maps (the USA version) as well as all of the medium resolution international data. From here, it's really much easier for us to start pushing in more and better stuff. This gives us an opportunity to fire up the servers in order to improve the performance before we go to GA, get some user feedback, and also not just sit on what we've already got processed (and trust me, there has been a lot processed and stacks and stacks of disks more to go. :-) ) We have a commitment to go forward and continue to put more and more in. Even though we don't have the very high res online yet for the USA, and we don't have any of our high resolution international stuff, we will be piling on a ton of new imagery in the coming weeks including very high resolution metros and a ton of very nice international stuff.
I think this is a good start for our users, and I hope you'll continue to check in on the beta as we make progress and start hitting on all cylinders.
Thanks!
Mike

Product Manager: Yahoo! Maps - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree! Not bad for a first try. Let's hope their images will eventually match (or beat) Google's
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3COMPETITION IS A GOOD THING
Well done Yahoo! It won't be long now before most mapping imagery and data is free... - TylerDurden0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting, their images are much more recent than Google Maps. It's not current by any stretch, but I'll take it.
- jsjohnst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where the heck are you looking Emile? Yahoo maps has satellite imagery for the entire globe at 15m resolution and 1m resolution for the US. That is only the tip of the iceberg of what is to come.
- aggieandrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think Yahoo looks a whole lot better than Google. I guess they did some color correction to make everything go together in the zoomed out view. The central Texas area is just one big gray spot on Google when zoomed out. In Yahoo it all blends together.
And my hometown is much more up-to-date in yahoo than google. They are dependent on their sources for the images. It's not like they have their own satellites taking pictures. - jibijibi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have to say that people whine too much.
- alphagod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What About IGoogle and Google Finance?????
I am pretty sure who copied who out there.... - olibird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you add map capability for Australia, you have a winner. Neither Google, microsoft live, or Yahoo! offer maps.
- aembleton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Link to the Yahoo Maps Beta that contains the satellite images: http://maps.yahoo.com/beta/
I have to say, the UI is pretty slick. - misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually Yahoo has done a better job then Google at becoming more community driven--look at Yahoo's Flickr, Fantasy Sports, Answers, Music, Finance...yes, it's the same old debate, but IMO, Yahoo isn't trying to be Google, their trying to be the ultimate community resource. And they offer tons of services to do that.
- jsjohnst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since there appear to be some confusion over the mapping terms, 15m does not mean the "scale" says 15m in the bottom corner. 15m imagery means each pixel on the screen covers 15m of the earth surface. To put that in another perspective, with 15m imagery at say 1000x1000 pixels that is a larger than most cities.
- agnoster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yahoo! maps has been around waaaay longer than Google maps... but the bottom line is that worrying about who's copying whom is a totally pointless endeavour. The question is, who can do it best?
- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yahoo Maps doesn't have 15m resolution satellite imagery for the entire globe. For where I live in the UK the imagery only appears when you zoom out until the scale says 2km. On Google Maps satellite imagery is available right down to when the scale says 20m.
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate this sort of comment. "The photos are sooo old, like, man, they're 4 years ago". Do you have any appreciation for what it's taken and the amount of money invested to get up-to-date, unclassified satellite imagery available for everyone to use for free?
I think you guys have been watching too many sci-fi movies and your expectations are way too high. Give Yahoo and all these big players some credit where it's due. - prab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First off, most of these sites get their images from the same companies. Second, Google maps and earth let you zoom in more, so are better (IMO). I have also noticed that on Google Earth, they must apply some sharping and contrast filters because their pictures are the same, but a little clearer. With all that said, I like the competition. They all press each other to do better.
- misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like Yahoo. Their new Beta Mail and Beta Maps are good improvements. Much needed, but still good.
- RomanH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As far as I can see they use exactly the same images as Google. I have the exact same cloud over my home town in both programs. Pity...
- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1does digg have yahoo fans??
- misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed. I like the inset map--makes it easy to scan an area when you're not sure where you should be looking but still get the detail in the main map. Nice work, Y!
- valona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the new interafce. The new API looks quite sweet too, from having a quick glance over. It also auto-loaded to my location when I started the service, which is a nice touch. Some of the Satellite imagery is quite old, but not everything is flawless. Reponse time is not very fast, but I would imagine this could be an opening day rush. Yahoo are beginning to surprise me, their new mail interface is sweet as a nut, and I'm being drawn back to more and more of their services. Still google is my search engine. Not sure if Yahoo need search quite as much as Google do, but competition between the two, has to be good for the consumer in the long run.
Digg. - manchld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Its slower than google, and it doesn't zoom as far, but it has a handy "live traffic" option...although it seems as though some of the reported traffic is hours old, not very live.
- sabbac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it a lot. and, the satellite imagery covers downtown Milwaukee, what a novel idea.
- Arkitus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It doesn't have 15m resolution for Edinburgh, UK afaik.
- starbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually can date the imagery within a year range. In google, my street is dirt, there are 2 houses, and lots of construction. Since my street was new construction/sales/move in mid 2003, i place this at winter 2002/early spring 2003. In yahoo, my entire road is complete, houses, fences, green grass, and the development behind mine the road is drawn out (but not listed in map/hybrid). This development phase one opened this past winter, so I would date the yahoo at winter 2004/early spring 2005. Two years newer. As far as the quality, yahoo has my old house visible (though not that close) and google just shows trees and from much higher elevation/lower quality.
- alsm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The photos of Brazilian cities that I took a look are almost the same, but "Hybrid" mode shows more info than Google Maps (OK, it's not THAT info, but Yahoo shows more roads :-D ).
I agree about the flash usage, BTW with more competitors google will have to improve maps/earth faster than they have done. - mdgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check maps at www.ask.com. You can right click at add multiple locations and even change the order of the route. I find it much better than google or yahoo if you need directions from point A to B, but through point C or in any other order
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like it's time to ditch Opera in favor of Firefox. If Opera has problems with Flash, ditch it.
- tommertron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just like MS Local, Yahoo doesn't seem to have adequate satellite imagery for Toronto, where I reside. Google's had that from day one (that they've offered satellite images.)
Sorry guys, it's a big open market up here, and you're ignoring it, so I'll stick with someone who has a slightly larger worldview. - wayjer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still in Beta
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it. The interface seems a little easier to use than Google.
BUT...
The photos are waaaaaaay out of date. My house is 4 years old, and it's not even on the map. How old are these photos????? - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+0@RezSav
A backhanded Trainspotting reference? - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+0The satellite images in my town (around Albany, NY) are from at least 1995, if not earlier. Google's are within the last year or two, and they've even been updated since the service went live (initially they were from about 2000).
- jimbobybob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1About time they make something good on yahoo.
- FrugalFreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've always been a Google fan, but I have to say Google has got SMOKED by Yahoo maps on quality. The images on Yahoo are WAY more recent than Google's. I can view my house in Yahoo's hybrid but the house doesn't even exist on Google's hybrids
- Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1will you stop your signature spam or what ?
- wayjer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0error
- gurm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0- Let's hit up Yahoo Maps to find the dopest route
- I prefer MapQuest
- That's a good one too
- Google Maps is the best
- True dat, Double true
Chris and Andy spoke the truth. Too many bell and whistles to make this slick enough for Yahoo. Good effort though. - jtrost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Next time instead of blog spamming, how about you just link straight to the source?
- krugzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0there is a blank square directly over my house. should i be afraid?
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not impressed with its aerial map feature. It needs closer shots. ;)
- courvoisierxo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Opera 9 no worky
- kshag, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This service is horrible. The key to these online map services is the responsive time of the servers. It seems too slow, sorry.
- ADMIN250, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0RezSav where you from *****?
- p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"The Sunnyvale company has let its competitors leapfrog it in one key area - satellite imagery"
Yahoo has been 'leapfrogged' in more than just one key area by its competitor. But competition tends to bring the best game out of all key players. - wayjer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Could Yahoo world be next???
- Eddible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Haha something else for Yahoo! to do badly. Yahoo! want to be Google so bad it's quite sad. Why don't they try do something new and original rather than buying every company under the sun and copying Google's ideas?
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Outdated Satellite Images, Very slow, To much flash usage.
~omg digg is forcing us to enter codes every time we want to comment.
Here's to the future digg spawns with out code requirements. - RezSav, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Just as well, nothing but junkies in Edinburgh anyway.
- Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0This map is horrific, the roadmap serivce is appalling in the UK and it is slow as anything.
Horrible. -
